eems like there is always something interesting to do or see in downtown Newnan. The recent display of “Painted Horses” on and around the court square has served to brighten the atmosphere, giving a more modern look to the old place. With most of the old trees now removed, the horses seem to add a little flair to the now open areas around the court house. Perhaps this will be the start of future displays of art which will add interest to this already popular gathering place. Although I really enjoy looking, I’m sorry to say I’m not much of a man for horses. I have many friends who dearly love them, including a granddaughter who has ridden in competition, but I don’t seem to have that “way” with animals the way a real horse lover does. I just can’t get on the same page as horses; they know it, and I believe they are silently laughing at me when I try. I couldn’t even get along with Nadine’s cat, which was with us for 17 years – may she rest in peace. (The cat, not my wife!) But I do admire those who enjoy horses and are fulfilled taking care of, and loving them. I can remember riding a horse a least three times in my life: the “first”, the “only” and the “last” time. I was in my mid twenties and visiting a friend on Bruce Jackson Road when I accepted his offer to ride. Having watched a lot of cowboy movies, I thought I knew exactly what to do, since John Wayne made it look so easy. They say a horse knows when you are uncomfortable around it, and this one had me “sized up” at first glance. When I “climbed aboard”, it was obvious this animal had his (or her- I don’t know) own agenda which would be made evident to me over the next few minutes. He took off even before I could say “go”, then ran through my neighbor’s garden, trampling much of the crop, before exiting the property. As we (I and my “friend” the horse) were galloping down the middle of the road at about 50 miles per hour, I could not seem to think of a single action those TV cowboys did to control their horses. I When I “climbed aboard”, pulled on every rope, string, tail and mane I could grab, “hollered out” all those clasit was obvious this animal had sic phrases I had heard from cowboys being chased by Indians, while desperately his (or her - I don’t know) own trying to “honk” the horn of the saddle to no avail! The horse was not impressed. agenda which would be made My friends were right behind us in a truck as we (I and the horse) arrived at a farm evident to me over the next few about three miles away. “Oh, I forgot to tell you”, said my friend laughing. “This minutes. horse has a bad habit of running back to the barn with an inexperienced rider!” “And it’s not even my horse”!

Just give me an old fashion combustion engine with at least two wheels attached, and a horn that really “honks” when pushed. Then I can probably get from here to there, without any “attitude” from the vehicle. It will stop at my command, and won’t run away with me until I say ”Go”! But don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy looking at horses. Just make sure they are finished in a glossy color and their feet firmly attached to a stand.

Postscript: Although my wife and I live on almost two hundred acres, I am not a farmer, and the only animals on our property are “trespassing”. So, if you see me wearing a big cowboy hat, you can rightly say that I am “All Hat And No Cows”!

Guest Contributor Owe More than Your Home is worth? Refinance is OK!

Hallelujah … Refinance opportunity … even if you owe more than your Home is Valued … FINALLY! The NEW Home Affordable Refinance Program (HARP 2.0) is offered by lenders across the country and designed to assist homeowners in refinancing their mortgage – even if you owe LOTS more than the home’s current value. The primary purpose for Home Affordable Refinance is to refinance your current loan and put you in a better position by EITHER one or ANY combination of the following benefits: • • • •

Reducing monthly principal and interest payments, or Reducing interest rate, or Reducing the amortization period, or Moving from a more risky loan structure (such as an interest-only mortgage or a short-term ARM) to a more stable product (such as a fixed-rate mortgage).

The HARP 2.0 loan is only for loans owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac (conventional type financing) before June 1, 2009. Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac Loans transferred after that date are not eligible for the HARP refinance program.

Thursday ~ May 3, 2012 Noon to 1:00 p.m. Greenville Street Park ~ Downtown Newnan 61st National Day of Pray ONE NATION UNDER GOD! “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” Psalm 33:12 The Community will gather to sing and pray for the Nation, State, County and City of Newnan. Lead by local ministers and other citizens. Come spend your lunch hour with your neighbors!

Frequently Asked Questions: Q. How do I know whether my current loan is owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac? A. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have established websites to assist in determining if your loan is owned by either. (Reminder – loan must have been owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before June 1, 2009 in order to qualify for HARP. Locating your property on one of the websites does NOT verify dates.)

that is participating in the program. Note – Different lenders may apply different guidelines depending on their internal policies. Q. Do I need perfect credit in order to participate in the HARP loan? A. Perfect credit in NOT necessarily needed, but you can not have 30 days late on your current mortgage in the last 6 months and no more than one (1) 30 day late in the last 12 months.

Q. I have a first mortgage with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac and a Home Equity Line of Credit or Second Mortgage with another lender. Can I combine the 2 loans under the HARP refinance? A. HARP loan is intended to refinance the existing Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac first mortgage loan. So you can refinance the first, but the second lien holder must agree to refinance new terms. Most second lien holders will agree since you are benefiting with a lower interest rate/ payment.

Q. Can I include closing costs for the new HARP loan in my new loan amount?

A. YES. Fannie Mae will allow all closing costs to be included in your new loan amount and Freddie Mac has some limitations but most costs can be included in the new loan amount. You may be able to participate in HARP with NO money out of pocket. The HARP program is not a permanent loan program, and will be discontinued in the future. Do not hesitate or you could miss the opportunity. If you have questions or

The Armchair Gardener Color In The Garden

In designing a garden plan, color is an important consideration. However, it is not possible to totally control color in the garden as it is in other art forms. Color is affected by sun and shade, by weather conditions, and by the vastness of outdoor space. Nature insists that the color green dominate, then mixes in the colors of sky and water. Color is here today and gone tomorrow. Other principles of design such as pattern, balance, proportion, scale, background and focal point provide a more pleasing and lasting plan. Having said that, it cannot be denied that the visual and psychological impact of color is strong. It evokes definite emotions and responses. Color preference is very personal. Red could say love or fire; green could represent nature or envy; blue says serene or cold. Yellow, white, and chartreuse green say spring. Green holly with red berries and snow flake mums say Winter. Bronze mums and brown cattails feel like Fall. Blue salvia, red zinnias, and white petunias seem to say Summer/patriotic. Some people love orange — others hate it. White represents purity or light. Yellow is cheerful and green is restful. Yes, color selection is important. Nature achieves color harmony through analogy (likeness) or contrast (opposites). The colors of Autumn - green, yellow-green, yellow, orange, red, and violet are analogous. Water can appear green, turquoiseblue, and violet. Sometimes nature uses contrast to produce dramatic color harmonies — blue flowers with orange centers, purple flowers with yellow centers, or red roses with green leaves. Color is an important element of garden design. It can be used as a focal point or as an accent. Color can be used to create rhythm through repetition. It can relieve monotony. Color can be used to achieve balance. Simplicity and unity are desirable. One easy method is to choose a dominate color and use it in mass. Either white or silver (grey) can be used to blend various colors in a border planting. They can also be used effectively in shade gardens. Currently, it has been popular to use purple or burgundy in design. Chartreuse or lime-green has also been widely employed in planting plans. Often, the two are combined for contrast. A house on LaGrange Street in downtown Newnan has used the combination very effectively.

Add an indoor/outdoor rug to define a space and decorate it as you would an indoor space … with outdoor friendly products. Most home improvement and decor stores have pillows made out of outdoor fabrics. Re-coating a worn out rocker or swing with a fresh coat of paint is a great way to add some decorative punch to your out- door living space. Will your space be a “living area” or a “dining area”? Or both? Once you’ve decided on how you will use the space, the final step is to add the proper accessories and presto’ve got a new livable area for yourself! Grillin’ and Chillin’ with Joe Powell If you enjoy outdoor cooking but don’t have that “just right” setup you need, you may want to get to know Newnan’s Joe Powell. For years, Joe has provided his friends and customers (who immediately become his friends) with the fellowship of great food and beverage, along with interesting conversation just because he likes people. I had the opportunity, just last week, to assist Joe and some friends in putting down some great grilled bratwurst, smothered with grilled peppers and onions. As usual, I loved it!

Through GRILLDOME OF NEWNAN, Joe can provide families with a high quality, ceramic grill/smoker which can be enjoyed for a lifetime. (Depending on your age, gentle reader) It uses real charcoal, but because of the grill’s adjustable venting system, the coals will last much longer – just add a bit when needed. “You can put in a piece of meat, smoke it unattended over night, and it will literally be ready to fall off the bone the next morning”, says Joe. He also sells the Atlanta Burning Sauce, which makes barbeque even better! Joe is the co-owner of the Commercial House offices, a licensed real estate agent, and has a hobbybusiness restoring and selling classic cars, including my “new to me” 41 year old Mercedes Benz. Joe is a “One Off, Custom Made, Special Edition model”, and I consider myself fortunate that he has counted me as a friend for many years.

“Drunken Chicken” One small, whole chicken Add lemon pepper After drinking the first two thirds of a beer, place the can, containing the remaining one third, into the chickens “cavity” and prop it on the grill using the bird’s wings for support.
