t gives me pleasure to share some of my thoughts in the Shopper, however, since I’m not a trained writer, I sometimes receive “words of correction” from our readers. “You need a proof reader”, some will say, or “you must have made up that word, or that phrase”. Well, the fact is I heard a lot of those words and phrases growing up without the proper understanding of their meaning, and I still use them today. I think most of us still use some of those “hold over” phrases from our childhood which we can’t seem to shake off. My dad used to think it was funny to use unknown (to us children) words and phrases which would confuse us. “I’m about to “perish to death”, he would say. I thought we would soon be making his funeral arrangements, but not until he had been “mortified” by the mortician (undertaker). He once said to my little sister, Weslyn, “I heard that you procrastinated on the front steps.” “It wasn’t me”, she replied. “It must have been the dog!” I grew up thinking euthanization would make you look young again, and that tartar sauce was a bi-product of the dental industry. And we all grew up being told not to “poke our eye out” with anything we were playing with, even a basketball. But the really big one, for me, was being told not to wear “holey” underwear when driving a car. You might just have a wreck and would be embarrassed in the emergency room. And if you died, you really would be “mortified”!

“So, in my final example, I would like to pose this important question. Now that Pope Benedict XVI has retired, must he continue to wear “Holey” underwear?

Now days, I have a word processor which tries to tell me how to spell and what punctuation to use, but I won’t allow it much leeway. If I have a choice of being “correct” or interesting, I’ll at least try to be interesting. So, in my final example, I would like to pose this important question. Now that Pope Benedict XVI has retired, must he continue to wear “Holey” underwear?

770-301-5643 “Downton Abbey” to be the Talk of the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation Third Annual Luncheon Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Newnan Country Club Newnan, GA; March 4, 2013 - The Earl of Grantham and the Dowager Countess will be the center of attention at the Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation’s Third Annual Luncheon Saturday March 23rd at 11 a.m. at the Newnan Country Club. Georgia Public Broadcasting’s “Desperate for Downton” blogger Rosemary Jean-Louis will lead a lively discussion and presentation on the hit PBS show “Downton Abbey” that recently wrapped its third season on GPB. The talk dubbed “Desperate for Downton” will share the inside scoop on the show’s last season and juicy tidbits about new cast members, actor departures and what fans can look forward to in season four. She’ll also offer “Downton” trivia and showcase GPB’s popular “Maggie Moments” video shorts, a compilation of witticisms from Lady Violet, played by Dame Maggie Smith. “I’m thrilled to chat with “Downton” fans for a worthy cause.” says Jean-Louis. “The Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation provides excellent educational programming for children. I am honored to support their work.” “Downton Abbey” is a Masterpiece theatre powerhouse and has become the most watched PBS series since Ken Burns’ “The Civil War.” This year, the show finished second in the ratings after “Super Bowl XLVII.” After the discussion, models will show the latest spring fashions courtesy of Dillard’s, Blue Moon and Design House, Chico’s, Ann Taylor and Wedgewood Boutique in an informal fashion show. This year accessories are the rage and participating stores will showcase the newest trends on a special accessory table. The popular $1 raffle returns with an array of crowd pleasing must haves from area stores and restaurants.

Tickets are $25.00 each with proceeds going directly to children’s and adult programming for the year. Beloved for generations since it first opened in 1903, the city-owned and operated Carnegie Library was returned to library service September 15, 2009. The Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation, a 501(c)-3 charitable corporation, was founded in 2008 to fund and further enhance library programming, literacy and learning for all ages ... honoring the legacy of its great benefactor, Andrew Carnegie. The Newnan Country Club is located at 1356 Hwy 29 in Newnan. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the program starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and modeling at noon, followed by the raffle drawings. This year tables of eight are available for reservation with an eight ticket purchase. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets early, as each year has been an early sell-out. Tickets are available at the Carnegie Library (open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.), and Scotts Bookstore, both located in Newnan’s historic town square. For further information, contact the Carnegie Library at 770-683-1347 or visitwww. a March 20, 2013 a The Coweta Shopper a Page 5

ROAD TO RECOVERY Volunteer Drivers Needed

If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteerbased program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.

7th Annual Sargent Baptist Church Car Show April 16 from 8 to 2 Awards for car, truck, motorcycle and ratrod. Silent Auction, Door Prizes, Food and Drink. For more information call Buster Meadows 770-251-3361, Mike Westbrook 770-550-8135.

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Check Engine Oil Level part 1 … Automobile engines are very complicated pieces of machinery and have many metal parts that rotate and reciprocate at high speeds and close tolerances. Years ago engines would last less than 100,000 miles and would then require major repairs or even a complete rebuild. Now, the engines in most of our cars are designed to last between 100,000 and 200,000 miles before needing even minor work. This improvement is mostly due to better manufacturing techniques, more advanced materials, and tighter manufacturing tolerances. Advancements have also been made in the type and quality of engine lubricating oils. Proper lubrication of the places inside your engine where metal parts contact other metal parts effects the heat generated, the noise made, and the longevity of all those critical components. Fortunately for us, automotive engineers have taken care of all the details, determining such things as viscosity, additives, temperatures, and even oil change intervals. Once again,

perusing your Owner’s Manual will provide you a proper education, especially the location of the dipstick and the fill tube as well as the recommended kind of oil and the oil change interval. But you as the driver or owner still have the responsibility of assuring that the engine in your car has the correct type and amount of oil. Check the oil level every month and add as necessary and change the oil at the recommended intervals, either months or miles. Don’t second guess the engineers, they know what they’re doing, you may not. If there is either too much or (more likely) too little oil, the engine will not be happy and will not provide you with the performance and longevity you expect. Realize that the idiot light on your dash measures oil pressure, not oil amount. It lights after the oil pressure goes below a minimum setting. It has little to do with oil level. When the light comes on, it could be too late to save the engine. Checking your car’s oil level is a good habit to

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition. Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at emily.

Here are both the engine oil dipstick (yellow handle) and the oil fill tube on a late model car.

get into since it will indicate that an oil top up or oil change is required soon. You should also keep a written record in a log book of the oil changes and other maintenance done to your vehicle either by you or a mechanic. I log the date and miles when I do an oil change myself and then calculate when the next oil change is due. This way it doesn’t sneak up on me and I can plan it around the weather, other activities, or oil and filters on sale. Checking oil every few weeks is OK unless you already know you have a leak or other problem and want to check it more frequently. Checking the level of the oil in your vehicle’s engine is very simple. Even on a dirty, dusty, greasy engine, checking the oil doesn’t have to be messy. Just be careful. Here are a few simple rules. Make sure your car is on level ground so the oil isn’t all at one end of the engine. Check the oil only when it is cold and the engine is turned off. When the engine is running, the oil is pumped to all kinds of nooks and crannies inside the engine and becomes very hot due to friction. If you check the oil when it is hot, it will still be in all those nooks and crannies or draining back down to the sump or oil pan where the oil resides and where the dipstick contacts the oil supply, giving you an inaccurate low reading and leading to a possible over-fill.

The Newnan community has hosted a series of important Clinics for Veterans since 2010. That effort will continue with the first Clinic of the year scheduled for March 20th beginning at 6:30PM. The Clinic site is the Coweta Veterans Club just off Highway 29 North. Travel less than one mile north of the Bypass intersection with Highway 29 and turn right across from A & W Nursery. The Clinic will be first among several to be held for veterans during 2013. No topic could be more appropriate than efforts to reach out to veterans in need of support to obtain medical assistance and/or VA compensation. Representatives of the local VA Clinic and the State VA Office in Newnan will present the program. Allan Brown, Patient Support Representative, will explain the 10-10EZ Application for Medical Assistance as well as the VA Medical Clinic Assistance.

Billy Robbins, State VA Representative, will speak about the Application process for VA Compensation as result of injury or illness incurred in or aggravated by military service

All veterans wishing to attend should make a reservation with Kathy Shiver at 404-924-0878 or Hanna Mercier at 678-850-6818. Both are members of VFW Post 2667.

Arnco’s Main Street Bridge Closed The bridge over the railroad on Main Street in Arnco has been closed due to its condition. The Georgia Department of Transportation inspected the bridge and notified Coweta County on February 4, 2013 that the bridge must be closed. There are multiple detour routes in the area. Coweta County Government will consult with the owner, Norfolk Southern Railroad, about the future of this bridge.

Monty Python’s Spamalot at NTC Through March 24

By Joan Doggrell Newnan Theatre Company is proud to be staging the first amateur production in the state of Georgia of the musical comedy “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” The show contains all the best jokes and gags so fondly remembered from the 1975 movie “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” plus song and dance numbers that satirize Broadway theater and Las Vegas entertainment. “Monty Python’s Spamalot” retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table and features beautiful show girls, as well as cows, killer rabbits, and French taunters. The script is by Eric Idle, with music and lyrics by Mr. Idle and John Du Prez. Be aware that the show contains content that some may find mature. Cast members include a variety of both Newnan veterans as well as a host of newcomers. Long-time Newnan Theatre Company stalwart Dale Lyles is playing King Arthur, Rick Olsen is cast as Sir Bedevere, Chad Davis as Sir Robin, Brian Mitchell as Sir Lancelot, and William Pratesi is playing several different roles: the Historian, Not-Dead Fred, and Herbert. Newcomer-to-NTC Allison Lowery is the Lady of the Lake, and another newcomer, Reide Hale, fresh from acting school in Los Angeles, is playing four roles: Dennis (who becomes Sir Galahad), Herbert’s father, and the Black Knight. Becky Clark is Musical Director, and NTC’s Artistic Director Paul Conroy is the choreographer. Director Jennifer Dorrell is an NTC Lifetime Award winner with some of NTC’s finest and most successful shows to her credit. Dave Dorrell, Managing Director of NTC, portrays Patsy, the servant who walks along behind King Arthur banging coconuts together. (Monty Python fans will remember that coconuts provide the sound effect of galloping horses.) As always, he has production as well as performance responsibilities. To purchase tickets, and for show dates and times, visit Newnan Theatre Company’s web site at http:// or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theater is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue. a March 20, 2013 a The Coweta Shopper a Page 19

The Armchair Gardener ~ Part 3 The past two articles have discussed flower arranging in the home or a Standard Flower Show in a home. Standard Flower Show in a location other than a home will likely have classes calling for advanced design styles and highly interpretive themes not seen in a home. Other types of floral work have their own set of special requirements. Oriental arrangement styles have very exact methods all their own which differ greatly from other design types. Flowers for churches must meet the needs and restrictions of each church. Generally, the flowers are viewed from a seated position and from a distance. Weddings and other special events are also very different. The designs are usually much larger and taller. Staging these designs requires special mechanics, props, ladders, etc. The flowers may need to hold up well out of water for hours. Then, funeral arrangements have yet another set of requirements. After a design has been planned and constructed, how can it be analyzed? Try asking these questions: a Does the design appear balanced - top to bottom, left to right, and front to back (real and visual)? a Is the container too large or too small for the amount or visual ‘weight’ of the plant materials? a Are all the components clean, and in good condition? (nothing wilted, or past prime, or damaged) a Is there a “bull’s eye” effect? (too shiny con tainer/one flower or form too large/one color too strong, etc.) a Are the mechanics sufficiently strong and stable for the materials? a Does the design fit the placement? (height, depth, width, overall size) a Is design style appropriate? (for room, for occasion, for theme) a Are the container and the plant materials compatible? a Does the accessory (if used) add to the de sign? (appropriate color, size, visual weight, placement) a Has repetition been used (of a color, line, shape, etc.) a Is there contrast (of colors, or textures, or shape, etc.) - but not too much (busy, confusing, cluttered)? a Are the materials organized to achieve a design style and unity? a Are the mechanics (oasis, tape, needlepoint, etc.) neat and hid den? a Has one color dominated rather than using equal amounts of each? [Ex. do not use equal amounts red, white and blue.] a Does the design have a center of interest or focal area? (if tradi tional) a Is the focal area correct? (not too large or too small, and not tightly packed together, and not dead center for the bull’s eye effect) a Does rhythm [visual movement through the design] flow and move around the design or does placement of materials, or forms, or colors stop rhythm? a Are plant materials, (flowers and foliage) and accessories in scale to one another? a Are the overall proportions of one area to another correct. (Ex. container to plant materials)

Revised Compactor Site Hours Coweta County provides compactor sites across the county for citizens to dispose of household trash and recyclables. Effective March 1, 2013, the hours of several of these sites will change. The new schedule was developed based on utilization and usage. Consideration was also given to proximity to other compactors sites and scheduled hours of operation as well. The new schedule will significantly reduce cost to the county without significantly reducing service. Even where hours have been decreased, there are other options within the area. For the sites and the new hours of operation, check out the map at The map can also be accessed via the County’s web site. Just go to and click on “revised compactor hours” in the Spotlight area of the home page.

a Are colors and forms grouped - not scattered in a spotty effect? A few tips on design: a Always condition materials before arranging a Finish the back of the design a A few pieces of charcoal added to the water will help keep long lasting foliage designs or forced branches “sweet” a Arrangement for a seated meal should be easy to see over (low) a Arrangement for a buffet table should be at back, or tall enough to see under the design a Use a toothpick, pin or wire through the center of a drooping bloom to be able to use in a design (gebera, zinnia, etc.) a Place a pipe cleaner inside daffodil stem to steady and bend into shapes a Run a small dowel or green stake up through the stem of amaryllis or other large hollow stem for support a Place plants in baggies to use in large designs (attach to green stakes or branch) a Fill a tall container with sand and put mechanics in the top for arranging a Use elastic bands or appropriate size wire to group/bundle plant materials a Use toothpicks, skewers, or thin branches to fasten fruit and vegetables in designs a Use floral tape and wire on back of leaves to bend and shape
