_________

Is it really almost time for Christmas again this year? It seems like just yesterday I was helping my wife put away the decorations for last year. I believe someone has accelerated the calendar and the matter should be turned over to the proper authorities for a full investigation! Families are already putting up trees, decorating their homes, buying gifts and going to parties. Christian churches are celebrating the birth of Our Lord, Jesus, with festive presentations, music programs and late night mass. Stores everywhere are gearing up for an invasion of shoppers willing to part with a good bit of their money. It is, indeed, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”! For some, however, it may not be quite as enjoyable. I’m talking about the men and women who If “Jesus is are behind the counters, working hard to serve us the reason for the best they can while doing three times the busithe season”, then ness as is normal. They have to tolerate impatient let’s act the way shoppers who are in a hurry to check out, and smile I believe he would – while doing so. Their feet may feel like concrete showing kindness and blocks from standing all day, yet the manager may encouragement be saying “can’t you go a little faster?” Moreover, to all. these clerks must also shop for their own families. They experience the same frustrations as the rest of us - not enough time or money to complete their Christmas lists. And it’s not just stores, but banks, restaurants, grocers, dry cleaners and many other types of businesses.

Perhaps there are a couple of gifts we can give these busy people as we are shopping this year. They are quite valuable, but cost nothing. These two gifts are “Kindness and Encouragement”. Being patient with a store clerk who has made a mistake is showing kindness. Telling him or her “You must really know your job well to be this efficient” is showing encouragement. Sometimes just a friendly smile and “I know you must be tired” might make them feel better. I think it makes us feel better, too when we show compassion and understanding for others. If “Jesus is the reason for the season”, then let’s act the way I believe he would – showing kindness and encouragement to all. You never know when a kind word of encouragement is just what that person needed to get through their day a little easier. It’s a Christmas gift we all want and we can all give. Merry Christmas from our “Coweta Shopper family” to yours!

Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce Counting our Blessings This Holiday Season

Congratulations! Chamber Announces Ambassadors of the Quarter

Candace Boothby, President Newnan-Coweta Chamber What more can be said about Christmas and the holidays? Even with the difficult economy, we all have much to be joyous about. We celebrate the end of another year, and we are blessed in comparison to much of the rest of the world. Local business is beginning to improve, although gradually. Our retail businesses have benefited from the loyalty of our citizens who have chosen to take advantage of the selection, quality of products and convenience of their location. Almost all of our retailers understandably wish they had experienced even more business, but there is the feeling that the worst has passed. The costs of the Great Recession will be remembered for many years to come. Coweta County is a special place to live and work and what better time than this holiday season to think about our good fortune to be here. We live in the best country on the face of the earth and our good luck to be among the fine people and organizations that make up Coweta should cause us to count our blessings. On behalf of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, I sincerely wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season.

“We are really enjoying our involvement with the Coweta Shopper.” ~ Newnan Coweta Chamber of Commerce

Caramel-Glazed Apple Pie Prep time: 20 minutes • Bake time: 55 to 65 minutes • Yield: 8 servings

Apple Pie: Pastry for double-crust pie 8 cups peeled & sliced cooking apples (about 4 to 6 large) 1/3 cup Karo® Dark Corn Syrup 3 tablespoons butter OR margarine, melted 3 tablespoons sugar

“My husband, Charles, and I enjoyed your article with much laughter.” ~ A. H., Newnan

1½ tablespoons Argo® OR Kingsford’s® Corn Starch 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon salt Caramel Glaze: ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup chopped pecans 3 tablespoons Karo® Dark Corn Syrup

“I loved your article (about the Tastee Freez) in this week’s Coweta Shopper.”

2 tablespoons butter OR margarine, melted 1 tablespoon Argo® OR Kingsford’s® Corn Starch Preheat oven to 375° F. Fit one pie crust into bottom of 9½-inch deep-dish pie pan. Add apples. Combine corn syrup, butter, sugar, corn starch, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl. Pour over apples. Top with second crust, fold edges under, seal and flute. Cut a few slits in top crust to vent. Place a shallow pan under pie to catch any drips and bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until crust is browned and apples are tender. Combine all Caramel Glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Dollop over pie and carefully spread over hot crust. Bake 10 minutes or until topping is bubbly.

Santa’s Outfit How do you know Santa has to be a man? No woman is going to wear the same outfit year after year. ~

~

~

~

A Sign of the Times

As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped: “Didn’t you get my E-mail?” ~

Jolly St. Nick

The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. -- George Carlin ~

Christmas Prayers

~

It was the day after Christmas at a local church. The pastor of the church was looking over the cradle when he noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from among the figures of the nativity set. Immediately he turned and went outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus. So he walked up to the boy and said, “Well, where did you get Him, my fine friend?” The little boy replied, “I got him from the church.” The pastor asked “And why did you take him?” The boy said, “Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to the little Lord Jesus and I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas I would give him a ride around the block in it.” ~

Christmas Requests

While working as a mall Santa, I had many children ask for electric trains. “If you get a train,” I would tell each one, “you know your dad is going to want to play with it too. Is that okay?” The usual answer was a quick yes, but after I asked one boy this question, he became very quiet. Trying to move the conversation along, I asked what else he would like Santa to bring him. He promptly replied, “Another train.” ~

It’s the holiday season and we are ending our 2010 season with a special gift – two holiday shows, both guaranteed to be more fun than spiked eggnog! Our first show is “A Christmas Twist” written by Doug Armstrong, Keith Cooper and Maureen Morley. What “Blazing Saddles” did to the western, what “Young Frankenstein” did to the horror movie, “A Christmas Twist” does to Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” and “Oliver Twist”. In a crazy mash-up of these two classics, Scrooge and the Cratchits are joined by Fagin, Mr. Bumble, three wacky ghosts, a gang of orphans, and a few surprise guests. “A Christmas Twist” is directed by NCTC Managing Director Dave Dorrell and will be performed December 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18, and 19 on the Main Stage. Performances are at 8pm Fridays and Saturdays, with Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. Our second helping of holiday cheer is “The Santaland Diaries” written by David Sedaris and starring Jeff Allen. This one-man show is the story of an unemployed slacker who decides to become a Macy’s elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is simply humiliating, but once the thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa’s workshop, he becomes bitter toward the crowds and the Christmas spirit. He tries to grin and bear it, but occasionally takes out his frustrations on the children and parents. When yet another Santa enters the workshop, he finds this Santa is different from the others. He actually seems to care about and love the children who come to see him. This startles our hero into an uncharacteristic moment of goodwill, just before his employment runs out. “The Santaland Diaries” is directed by Tony Daniel, and will be presented December 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 in the Black Box theatre space. Shows are Fridays at 10:30 pm., Saturdays at 6 and 10:30 pm; and Sundays at 6 pm. In conjunction with our holiday productions, NCTC is collecting canned goods for the Coweta County Food Pantry. We encourage our patrons to bring in a few cans of food and drop them off in our lobby – and as an added incentive, each person who donates a can of food will receive a free hot chocolate at our concessions area. Looking for a special gift? NCTC 2011-12 Season Tickets are on sale now! Three different Season Ticket packages are available at our box office or online at our website – www.newnantheatre.org. Or pick up individual show Gift Certificates, also available before or after any performance at the box office.

The Armchair Gardener Caring For Holiday Plants

Gee! That’s a really pretty plant! Now, where am I going to put it; and how will I take care of it so that it will last through the Holiday season? If you’ve ever thought like this, here are a few suggestions for your indoor Holiday garden. The poinsettia (euphorbia pulcherrima) is native to Mexico. The colorful bracts are not the true flower part. That is the small yellow center. Contrary to old advice, the milky sap is not poisonous but might be slightly irritating to pets and children. Give the plants bright light. Keep the plants away from heat sources and drafts. Don’t place plants outside in winter. Don’t let the plant dry out or allow it to stand in water. Purchase poinsettias when the yellow centers are tight and firm with a greenish tint to last longest. If you plan to use them in flower arrangements, either burn stem ends to sear milky sap or wash dirt from roots and place in small plastic (moist) bags. Poinsettias are available in many colors. Christmas Cactus is another favorite gift plant. It’s botanical name is Schlumbergerg bridgesii. This plant has long hanging branches that are smooth with scalloped edges. It is covered with many small flowers in a purple-red shade. This plant needs cool night temperatures and long hours of darkness to bloom in December. The plants need a good well-drained potting soil and fertilizer. They need bright light inside and can be put outside in a partially shaded area in warm weather. This is not the same plant as “Easter Cactus” (Zygo cactus truncatus or also known as Schlumbergerg truncata). Its smooth long branches are very sharply toothed and produce more rounded blooms. Amaryllis come in many colors and sizes. Water sparingly and keep well-drained. Place bulb about one-half above soil level. Allow about two inches between bulb and pot. After blooms fade, cut off flower stalk. Plug hollow stem (after filling with water) in floral arrangements.

“Holiday Decorating When Selling Your Home” by Nan Johnston of Southern Staging & Redesign

The holidays are fast approaching. Often home sellers are unsure of how to decorate the house for the holidays while having their house on the market. Below are a few tips on how to have the spirit of the season without undoing all the staging that has gone into preparing the house to sell. • “Less is more” is the motto that one needs to follow while preparing a house to sell and the same applies to holiday decor. It may feel like you’re being a scrooge by not displaying every item that you have or that the kids have made over the past 18 years, but are you willing to risk losing a potential buyer because they couldn’t see past the holiday decorations? • First impressions begin at the curb. Don’t cover the architectural details. Wrapping the house in lights and using plastic and inflated yard ornaments can distract from the architectural details that a buyer needs to see. A simple wreath on the door, in keeping with the personality of the house (not the owners) is all that is needed. • Tone down the size of the tree. In place of a large tree that can take up valuable real estate in a room, try a 4 foot table top version. You may decide

that you like it better. Instead of using colored bulbs, opt for clear or white bulbs for your tree. • Keep gifts under the tree to a minimum and use coordinating wrapping paper to give a cohesive look. Or hide the gifts under the beds or in a closet. • The fireplace is a huge selling feature and does not need to be hidden with holiday decor. A simple wreath and poinsettias flanking the fireplace are all that is needed. If the kids want Santa to find their stockings, place one at the foot of each of their beds or wait until Christmas eve to place them on the mantle. • Greeting cards can easily become clutter. Instead of displaying the greeting cards on the mantle or sideboard , etc. place them in a bowl or basket in your family room to enjoy while relaxing in the evening. • If you absolutely have to display all your decorative items, remove an equal amount of “off season” accessories to keep the clutter to a minimum. • If it’s your turn to host the holiday party this year, see if it is possible to host holiday celebrations at a restaurant, banquet hall, or trade years with another family member this year to minimize the amount of punch bowls, serving platters, and other kitchen items that cannot be stored away. If your family gives you any trouble about this, then tell them you will need to move in with them while your house is on the market and I’ll guarantee that they will be open to any alternative idea that you come up with.
