ell, it’s finally time for Christmas, and there is still time to put in some good shopping days for those of you who enjoy such an activity. As for me, I may buy gifts early this year. Instead of waiting until Christmas Eve, I might get started on Thursday (afternoon, of course!) There are probably a lot of things I don’t do well, but gift buying is at the top of the list. It really “takes the cake”! I’ll go into a store, look at gloves, dusting powder, Ginsu knives, calendars and maybe some cheap pocketbooks or wallets. My blood pressure goes up, my face turns red and I sweat like the proverbial pig. It’s not the money, and I try to like Christmas, but I sometimes wish I could just swap jobs with the man who cleans up after the elephant at the parade. As for receiving gifts, I do much better. We all enjoy giving and receiving during the holiday season and this year I have gotten my gifts early. I have been given good health and a clear mind. I have a warm, comfortable home and food to eat. I have a loving wife and my children and grandchildren are doing fine. I live in a country where I can buy and sell, speak freely, go here and My blood pressure there, and worship as I please. If I never have anygoes up, thing more, I will still have been very blessed. There my face turns red are many, right here in our community, who are not and I sweat doing as well. Some are sick, out of work, maybe like the hungry and just plain scared. I was in a business proverbial pig. this week and said to the clerk, “Are you getting everything you want for Christmas?” Her reply to me, “There’s been a recent death in our family and we don’t have any money this year, but I’m going to focus on what I do have”.
We at The Coweta Shopper are also happy for what we have received this year. The paper is growing and we have had good comments from our readers. Our advertisers are happy with us, and all our bills are paid. We have hope, plans and expectations of growing the business in the future through free enterprise. Thank you, our readers, for helping make The Coweta Shopper a popular, effective and positive advertising medium for our community. We wish you a very merry Christmas and prosperity for the new year.

To me, this is the most awesome time of the year, Christmas. This week we officially celebrated our 2nd year anniversary, and as I reflect back on 2010, God has truly blessed Pioneer Ford. I would like to thank the hundreds who have become part of our family and made Pioneer Ford the #1 sales volume leader in the West Georgia/East Alabama area, 2 years running. Taking delivery of your vehicle should be as exciting as a child’s Christmas morning and that is exactly how it is at Pioneer Ford. Our Year End Celebration is going on now through the end of December, with the best incentives I have ever seen. I personally invite you to stop by, browse our huge inventory, and let our friendly sales staff assist you in choosing that special vehicle. Come experience what car buying should be like. Have a Merry Christmas and may God Bless America!

Practice fire safety watch what you heat. ~Author Unknown
Citizens should be aware of the dangers of using heat lamps too close to combustible materials. You need to read, understand and follow all of the manufacturer’s instructions when using heat lamps or any other type of heating appliance. It is safer to bring pets inside during cold weather than to rely on a heat lamp or other portable heating devices to keep them warm outside.

A Sign of the Times
As a little girl climbed onto Santa’s lap, Santa asked the usual, “And what would you like for Christmas?” The child stared at him open mouthed and horrified for a minute, then gasped: “Didn’t you get my E-mail?” ~
Jolly St. Nick
The main reason Santa is so jolly is because he knows where all the bad girls live. -- George Carlin
Sunday, January 16 …
How do you know Santa has to be a man? No woman is going to wear the same outfit year after year.
Please mention you saw it in The Coweta Shopper
Thursday, January 6 …
It was the day after Christmas at a local church. The pastor of the church was looking over the cradle when he noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from among the figures of the nativity set. Immediately he turned and went outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus. So he walked up to the boy and said, “Well, where did you get Him, my fine friend?” The little boy replied, “I got him from the church.” The pastor asked “And why did you take him?” The boy said, “Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to the little Lord Jesus and I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas I would give him a ride around the block in it.” ~
While working as a mall Santa, I had many children ask for electric trains. “If you get a train,” I would tell each one, “you know your dad is going to want to play with it too. Is that okay?” The usual answer was a quick yes, but after I asked one boy this question, he became very quiet. Trying to move the conversation along, I asked what else he would like Santa to bring him. He promptly replied, “Another train.” ~

The Armchair Gardener Winter Interest In The Garden What does your garden look like in winter? Does it have color, pattern, texture, and interest? This is the perfect time of year to survey the landscape and make plans for the coming Spring and Summer. It’s also the perfect time to see the “bones” of your garden. The hardscaping (fences, walls, arbors, etc.), and trees, shrubs and water features are clearly visible now. Think of adding plantings for winter interest. The evergreen trees are so important now. Magnolia, Spruce, Pine, Deodar Cedar, Leyland Cypress and other evergreens also have interesting pods and cones as well as beautiful green foliage. River Birch, Sycamore, and Crepe Myrtle have lovely exfoliating bark. Holly and Dogwood have great berries; so do viburnums and nandina. Camellias offer a wide variety of blooms. Edgeworthia is a fragrant winter must-have. The dried blooms of Oakleaf and Pee Gee Hydrangeas look great, as well as the dried grasses and sedum. Shrubs that are evergreen will add additional color and texture. Aucuba, Yew, Juniper, Lecothoe, Boxwood, Anise, Gardenia and Osmanthus are excellent choices. Fragrant blooming Winter Jasmine is such a delight on a bleak winter day. A variety of Hellebores bloom in the winter. Annuals such as pansies, violas, cabbage, and kale add color and texture. Rosemary adds texture, fragrance and tiny blooms and evergreen color. Some nandinas have wonderful bronze-red foliage. Harry Lauder’s walking stick is a wonderful curving, twisting small tree. Variagated plants add color and pattern (Yucca, Osmanthus, Ivy, Acuba and Elaeagnus). Topiaries, statues, bird baths, water features, fountains, benches, birdhouses – all are possibilities for adding interest to the winter garden. Make a plan. Add or eliminate with a purpose. Visit plant nurseries for ideas and information.
Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger Anyone who has ever watched a police drama such as “Law & Order” has heard these words: “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you.” These words are known as your Miranda warning and originated from the case of Miranda vs. Arizona. What most people don’t know is the story of Miranda and why these words are a part of our American culture. In 1963 Ernesto Miranda was arrested in Phoenix as a suspect for a kidnapping. The police questioned him. Miranda admitted to the crime orally and in writing. He did not know he had no obligation to speak to police without a lawyer, or at all. At trial, his attorney objected to the use of the statements. Miranda was convicted and his statements were part of the evidence. In 1966 his case reached the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court stated that his 5th and 6th Amendment Rights were violated and overturned his conviction. This warning’s origin lies in the 5th Amendment, which says that the Government may not compel any person to incriminate themselves. The relevant portion follows: “no person shall … be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law …” The 6th Amendment addresses many subjects including speedy trials, jury trials, location of trial, and cross-examination of witnesses. The 6th Amendment also includes a right to an attorney: “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right … to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.” However, contrary to common belief, the Miranda warning doesn’t confer rights: it simply reminds arrestees of the rights already granted to them by the Constitution. Also, television police dramas have led people to believe that before the police may interrogate or arrest a subject, the Miranda warning must be given. That just isn’t the case. Neither arrest alone nor interrogation alone (if there has been no arrest) requires the warning to be given. Miranda applies only to in-custody questioning. A statement made to police by a subject not in custody is not subject to Miranda. Also, the failure to give a Miranda warning does not result in the case being dismissed. It only results in the inability of the police to use a confession in evidence against the accused. And what did happen to Ernesto Miranda? After the Supreme Court overturned his conviction, he did not go free. In a new trial he was found guilty without his statements used as evidence. Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce Counting our Blessings This Holiday Season
Congratulations! Chamber Announces Ambassadors of the Quarter
Candace Boothby, President Newnan-Coweta Chamber What more can be said about Christmas and the holidays? Even with the difficult economy, we all have much to be joyous about. We celebrate the end of another year, and we are blessed in comparison to much of the rest of the world. Local business is beginning to improve, although gradually. Our retail businesses have benefited from the loyalty of our citizens who have chosen to take advantage of the selection, quality of products and convenience of their location. Almost all of our retailers understandably wish they had experienced even more business, but there is the feeling that the worst has passed. The costs of the Great Recession will be remembered for many years to come. Coweta County is a special place to live and work and what better time than this holiday season to think about our good fortune to be here. We live in the best country on the face of the earth and our good luck to be among the fine people and organizations that make up Coweta should cause us to count our blessings. On behalf of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, I sincerely wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season.

Pie Ideas When you’re ready to start baking, the ACH Test Kitchen can also provide easy-as-pie recipes to inspire you. Here is one for your holiday menus. Caramel-Glazed Apple Pie uses Karo Corn Syrup to bring out the fresh flavors of apples and spices. In fact, the syrup has been an important addition in homemade pies for over a century and remains an excellent ingredient today. What’s more, Argo Corn Starch thickens the filling with satiny smoothness and glossy appearance.
Caramel-Glazed Apple Pie Prep time: 20 minutes • Bake time: 55 to 65 minutes • Yield: 8 servings
Apple Pie: Pastry for double-crust pie 8 cups peeled & sliced cooking apples (about 4 to 6 large) 1/3 cup Karo® Dark Corn Syrup 3 tablespoons butter OR margarine, melted 3 tablespoons sugar 1½ tablespoons Argo® OR Kingsford’s® Corn Starch 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon salt Caramel Glaze: ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup chopped pecans 3 tablespoons Karo® Dark Corn Syrup 2 tablespoons butter OR margarine, melted 1 tablespoon Argo® OR Kingsford’s® Corn Starch Preheat oven to 375° F. Fit one pie crust into bottom of 9½-inch deep-dish pie pan. Add apples. Combine corn syrup, butter, sugar, corn starch, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl. Pour over apples. Top with second crust, fold edges under, seal and flute. Cut a few slits in top crust to vent. Place a shallow pan under pie to catch any drips and bake for 45 to 55 minutes, until crust is browned and apples are tender. Combine all Caramel Glaze ingredients in a small bowl. Dollop over pie and carefully spread over hot crust. Bake 10 minutes or until topping is bubbly.
