very day we hear the word media, and what they are saying about this or that. A medium, as you know, is any form of communication that reaches the general public. The media, therefore, is simply the sum of the individual mediums. They include TV, internet, print, radio and so forth. The Coweta Shopper, for example, (and a good one at that!) is our form of printed communication that connects the citizens of our community with the products and services available here. I suppose these “announcements to the public” have existed throughout history, from smoke signals, to engraved stones displayed in the town square, right up to our modern, amazing internet. But the thing which influenced me most as a child was television. In the early 1950’s, TV was just getting going good and folks were glued to the screen, just as we are to our monitors today. In Newnan, we received three stations on about a 16” screen installed in a box about half the size of a refrigerator – black and white, of course. Around 1952, when I was but a wee knucklehead, one of my favorite shows was “The Woody Willow Show”, with host, Officer Don. Do you remember? Woody was sort of a cowboy type wooden marionette, playing alongside his girlfriend, Theresa Termite. It was a live show, produced in Atlanta, featuring about a dozen young boys and girls sitting on old apple crates and watching Woody perform. They played games (remember “ooey-gooey”) and watched old reruns of the Little Rascals. The show started in the late 40’s and was later called “The Popeye Club”. Every child dreamed of being on that show – being on real TV! I suppose I should call this article “How I (almost) got my start in show business”, cause one day “I got the call”! I would be on live television, and as far as I was concerned, everyone on the planet would be watching The Woody Willow Show just as I stepped out in front of the cameras. A few other friends were going, too, and as I remember, we were a group from Miss Mae’s Kindergarten and would be accompanied by our moms. My mother and I told everyone we knew (or any stranger with a TV set) of my forthcoming appearance. As we entered the WSB-TV studios that afternoon, the mothers combed our hair and straightened our clothes. I was, of course, lookin’ good and sporting a bow tie, and my mother was ready to show me off. The moms were to sit on bleachers off camera while we were to sit on those apple crates – you know, the “Peanut Gallery”. Well, after all the preparation, all that talk, I froze like a statue and wouldn’t let go of my mom. I “chickened out” at the last possible moment and sat with her instead of my friends. My hopes and dreams of being a movie star, indeed my “start in show business”, would not be realized that afternoon. And as to my mother, I could only think, “Oh Lord, help me!. She went form being crestfallen, to embarrassed, followed by sheer anger, and I knew I was about to “get the business”. About the time my tender backside was engaged between the sharp and powerful nails of her thumb and forefinger, I jumped up and hollered, “Ouch! You pinched my fanny!” “I did not!” was her loud reply. The camera men couldn’t help but laugh. Officer Don couldn’t keep a straight face, then all the kids started laughing, along with the moms. All but my mom. She was ready for World War III and the battle was being played out for everyone on the planet, including all of Newnan, to hear! But it was a quiet ride home. So, I missed my big opportunity that day, but I did finally acquire an acceptable alternative writing the Publisher’s Page of The Coweta Shopper. Most would wonder what’s so great about that. The fact is, when I balanced my check book the other day, I realized I would be working until I am 95, so it might as well be something I really enjoy doing.

Grundy’s Paint & Auto Body, Inc. This 1948 MGTC was purchased new by Katherine Munson of Detroit, Michigan when she was just 22 years old. This was a special order purchase, as it was fitted with a rare Shurrock supercharger, something she would need to be competitive in her new hobby, sports car racing. In 1949 Munson organized the local chapter of SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) and in 1951 won the SCCA Ladies Division Cup. The history of this young woman and her car includes Road racing at Elkhart Lake (now called ROAD AMERICA), oval track competition at the Studebaker Proving Grounds in Indiana, and ice racing during the winters. She entered several hill climb events at Wilkes Barre, PA where she would occasionally compete against TV personality, Dave Garroway, in his Jaguar SS-100. A husband and two young children finally curtailed her adventures by the mid 50’s, and the beloved MG was garaged. In 1999, the then 73 year old Katherine Munson sold the car to a resident of Cowea County, where it remains today – 65 years old, tired but proud. “A little like its owner”.

Shingles Pain Lingers After Rash Is Gone DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two years ago I had shingles, and I now suffer the aftereffects of it. The sores went away in a month, but the stinging, burning, throbbing pain is still with me. I cannot wear clothing over the affected shoulder. No medicines have eased the pain so far. Is there any help? — M.L. ANSWER: You now are dealing with postherpetic neuralgia, pain that lingers long after the shingles rash has gone. The virus that causes shingles is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Almost every adult on this continent harbors that virus, now called herpes zoster. It lives on in nerve cells. From time to time, at older ages, it wakens from its hibernation, travels down the nerve to the skin and causes an outbreak of blisters on a red base. The outbreak goes away in about three weeks. Pain can linger for a long time — months, to years. In traveling down the nerve, the virus damaged it. I can list some of the postherpetic neuralgia medicines. Two are antidepressants — nortriptyline and amitriptyline — given not for depression but for pain relief. Cymbalta (duloxetine) is another antidepressant that can lessen postherpetic pain. Lyrica (pregabalin) is an anti-seizure medicine that’s approved for this problem. Neurontin (gabapentin) is another seizure medicine used for control of the lingering pain of shingles. Capsaicin lotion, cream or gel (Zostrix, Capsin, R-Gel) is applied directly to the involved skin. A higher concentration of capsaicin comes as a patch that’s applied in the doctor’s office, left on for an hour and then

removed. Treatment can be repeated in three months. It’s called Qutenza. Another skin patch is the Lidoderm patch. The latest medicine is Gralise, an extended-release form of gabapentin — Neurontin. It requires fewer doses. The entire shingles story is covered in the booklet on that topic. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I get my calcium by drinking milk. I believe natural sources are the best sources of vitamins and minerals. The problem is that whole milk raises my cholesterol. My father died of a heart attack at a young age. Does skim milk have as much calcium as whole milk? — R.T. ANSWER: Skim milk contains a little more calcium than whole milk. An 8-ounce glass of whole milk has 291 mg of calcium. The same amount of skim milk has 300 mg.

Can you suggest anything? — L.O. ANSWER: Your description fits peripheral neuropathy, a deterioration of nerve function, often of the leg nerves. The causes for it are many. Frequently, however, a precise cause can’t be determined. You need to make an appointment to see a neurologist as soon as you can. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. © 2013 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

The cookbook contains a variety of Mediterranean appetizers, soups and salads, rice and legumes, vegetarian, beef, pork and chicken, slow-cooker recipes, desserts and breads, and many more. Wine pairings are offered for several recipes, making this cookbook a unique family entertainment guide. “Sharing the love of cooking with your hands,” is Andrea’s motto. “I hold my grandmother in my hands everyday with my cookbook, so I can never forget her.”

My favorite kinds of cookbooks are ones that have been inspired by family recipes. I enjoy reading the stories about the family member that prepared the dishes in the cookbook and trying the recipes that have been passed down from one generation to the next. “Nahima’s Hands: Unique Mediterranean Cuisine” by Andrea Cassell is a loving tribute to her grandmother (Nahima) and her flavorful, Mediterranean recipes. What started out as a granddaughter’s love for her grandmother and a desire for her four children, and subsequent generations, to carry on these cooking traditions is now a moving tribute to family and Mediterranean cuisine. Andrea says that she wants people to read her cookbook and say “this looks easy and I can create this without a lot of work.” She also wants to encourage families to come back to the table. She says that the cookbook is not just about food, but about “our heritage, friends and families coming together through the food we eat.” Andrea’s Syrian grandmother, Nahima (Abouid) Albert, immigrated to the United States shortly after marrying her husband, Antonio in 1926. They owned and operated a corner grocery store in Miami. This is where young Andrea spent her childhood days while her mother and father went to work. It was there at Nahima’s knee that Andrea says she learned about hospitality and cooking. Her grandmother worked all day in the grocery

store, and still found the time to cook dinner for her parents to take home. Andrea witnessed her grandmother’s selfless love and compassion daily. She was always in the kitchen helping her grandmother prepare food. Nahima passed away in 2009. She lived to be 101. Her grandmother’s love and talents with food inspired Andrea to create “Nahima’s Hands: Unique Mediterranean Cuisine.” While she includes many of the Mediterranean dishes that she learned from her grandmother in the cookbook, it also contains some of her original recipes that are easy to prepare.

Since there’s not much gardening to do in Winter, it’s a good time to study arranging. It does provide a change from seed catalogues and tool shed chores. In the past I’ve written about plants to grow for arranging, conditioning plants for designs, and flower arranging terms defined. Now I thought it might be helpful to suggest some tips on planning and improving design. Do plan your design first - selecting the appropriate container and the right mechanics for the flowers and/or foliages you plan to use. Consider placement - the style and colors of the room and the height and size of furniture or other spots chosen. Does the shape and size of the place you want a design used best fit a tall vertical design, a low horizon design, a small arrangement, or perhaps a huge mass? Do you need to be able to see over the design (as at a seated meal)? If you are arranging in front of a mirror, be sure to make the back as lovely and finished as the front. Do collect your container/ mechanical aids, well-conditioned plant materials, and arranging tools before you begin - just as you would assemble all the ingredients and equipment before beginning to cook. Select a container that will enhance (but not compete with) the flowers you plan to use. Generally, neutral colors (green, beige, gray, white, or brown) work well. Clear glass can be lovely with lilies or roses because of their smooth, elegant feeling. A white container should always have some white materials in the design for unity. All white flowers and a white container, on the other hand, can be tricky - add variegation, foliage, and tints and shades for variety, otherwise it could be monotonous. Generally, avoid shiny containers - they can be a bullseye and take away from the design. The size and weight of container to the plant materials chosen is very important. Think about the shape of your design. Will it be a symmetrical or an asymetrical one? What shape will work well with the plant materials you have - triangle, oval, round, crescent, fan-shaped or modern creative? Will this be a line, line-mass, or mass design? Flowers and foliages chosen should be compatible with the design style as well as the room, occasion, and the container. A base can add weight to the container to achieve better balance. An accessory (where appropriate and carefully selected) can add interest to a design or help in establishing balance. Oasis (wet), sahara (dry), chicken wire (crumpled), needlepoint holders, lead strips, or waterproof floral tape can be used to secure the design style in the container.

ROAD TO RECOVERY Volunteer Drivers Needed

This volunteerbased program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments. Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition. Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at emily. stastny@gmail.com.

Curbing Hairballs

Call 770-254-1421 Before Deadline 3 p.m. Friday

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, “Chester,” coughs up a big hairball about once every two weeks. Is this unusual? How can I stop it? -Grossed Out in Chicago DEAR GROSSED OUT: Coughing up the occasional hairball isn’t unusual for most cats, but if it seems to be happening more frequently, getting a professional opinion is important. Schedule a checkup for Chester with his veterinarian, and bring along the next hairball (or two) he coughs up in the meantime. The vet can check for any underlying condition, as well as check the hairball for traces of blood, plants or other items of concern. The vet will make sure Chester’s general health is good for his age (or not), and can offer suggestions and possibly medication to reduce the frequency at which your cat is horking up hairballs. Hairballs are formed due to a cat’s habit of cleaning its fur with its tongue. The rough tongue tends to pick up stray hairs and dander, which the cat swallows. Most of the time, this hair passes through the digestive tract without a problem. But occasionally this does not happen, and the cat regurgitates the hair (and other stuff matted into it). If Chester gets an otherwise clean bill of health, the vet probably will recommend using a hairball preventative. The most common type is a petroleum jelly-based treat that is licked off the end of your finger. Chewable hairball treats also are available; these contain mineral oil and should be given sparingly. “Hairball control” cat foods contain extra fiber (usually cellulose) to help push excess hair through the digestive tract. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
