Improvements? Q: I’ve been holding off on redoing the bathrooms in my house because of worries about the economy and whether my wife and I would be laid off. Now we’re in a disagreement: She wants to redo the bathrooms, but I still don’t want to risk spending money. What do you think? Is it worth it? — Worried in Washington state A: Well, the home-improvement industry is anxious to have you believe that it’s time to take the plunge and spend money on home renovations. DiggersList says that industry estimates point to homeowners in the U.S. spending twice as much money this year — $270 billion — on remodeling projects as they did in 2009. That’s all well and good, but the story is different for each homeowner. If you’re not sure about your company’s situation and whether you’ll continue to be gainfully employed in the near future, yeah, you may want to hold off. At the same time, some renovations just need to get done. If there is a functional problem with the bathrooms — the plumbing needs work, the bathtub or toilet is leaking — then spend some money. If it’s more cosmetic, talk it over with the wife, and sit down together to figure out how much money you are both comfortable spending on the renovation. You could compromise by redoing just one bathroom this year, and the other bathroom next year. Or you could both promise not to splurge on unnecessary items like gold-plated fixtures. But creating a renovation budget and working together to come in at or under the limit will help break the impasse. HOME TIP: The cost of a bathroom renovation varies widely depending on several factors, but can be as low as $6,500. Truex Likes New Ride With Waltrip Racing Martin Truex Jr., once known for his friendship and affiliation with Dale Earnhardt Jr., is now making a name for himself in the No. 56 Toyota of Michael Waltrip Racing. After winning the Busch (now Nationwide) Series championships in 2004 and ‘05, Truex made the step up to Sprint Cup and spent four seasons at Dale Earnhardt Inc., which eventually Martin Truex Jr. (left), with crew chief Pat became Earnhardt Ganassi Rac- Tryson, hopes to make an impact in his new No. ing. He made the Chase for the 56 Toyota ride with Michael Waltrip Racing. (Photo: John Clark/NASCAR This Week) Sprint Cup in 2007, the year he won his only Cup race, to date, at Dover International Speedway. This year Truex has moved into Chase contention in his first season at MWR, where he has been paired with veteran crew chief Pat Tryson. “We’ve just been steady as a race team, doing all the things we need to do to get points and finish races,” said Truex. “There have been a few races where we’ve had really good cars, and a few races where we were off but still managed to get good finishes, and that’s why we’re sitting here (in Chase contention).

“Pat (Tryson) and all the guys on the (sponsor) NAPA team have done an awesome job. I feel like the last month, month and a half, we’re starting to gel and figure out our race cars, find some speed and know where to go to get that speed when we need it. I’ve been very happy with that and still continue to work on our stuff to try to get better.” Before making the move to MWR and Toyota, Truex had a close relationship with his previous crew chief, Kevin “Bono” Manion, who now works with Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray. He compared Tryson with Manion. “They’re different in a lot of ways, but I wouldn’t say they’re like night and day,” said Truex. “Their personalities are a little bit different. ‘Bono’ is more quiet and kind of strict. If you do something wrong, he’ll probably yell at you. “Pat is a little more laid back, kind of likes to have fun. Both of them do a great job, obviously, and they’re both good at calling races and they both understand the race cars well. They’re different, but at the end of the day, they are both out there doing the same job, and both do it well.” *** Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette since 1993. GREATEST prices on the GREATEST styles!

by Nan Johnston of Southern Staging & Redesign Did you know that a home buyer will make a decision on a house within the first 10 seconds. In the blink of an eye, they will decide "This is the one" or "Let's move on to the next one". There so many houses on the market these days that not only must the house be attractive, cleaned and in excellent repair, it should be seductive. Buyers purchase houses based on emotions. Their buying a dream....a lifestyle. Most buyers can't see past a sellers personal items or decor style. Helping a buyer out by setting the stage can impact how they will feel in the home... an atmosphere is created that makes them want to linger longer in the space and imagine themselves living there.

Home staging is the process of making a home "buyer ready" so that it will appeal to the largest amount of buyers. It's not interior decorating but rather a process of de-cluttering, de-personalizing, utilizing a home sellers furnishings and accessories to highlight the best features of a room. It's about creating emotional connection between the buyer and the property. Dining Room - Before Staging

Professionally staged homes: • Help increase showings - most buyer traffic will come through a home within the first two weeks it's on the market than any other time period. This will be a sellers best audience and having the property ready to show and properly priced is key. Dining Room - After Staging • Houses that have been professionally staged sell faster and for closer to asking price - according to surveyed Realtors, Home Staging is the second most valuable home improvement project to a seller when it comes to selling a home by return on investment. • Doesn't cost a dime - according to the 2009 Home Gain Report, home staging has 586% return on investment. ($300 cost / $1780 price increase) • Helps reduce a property’s time on the market - according to the National Association of Realtors the longer a property sits on the market the lower the sales price will be. • A well staged home suggest a home that has been cared for and most buyers will pay more for a move-in ready house. Condition of the property will directly affect a buyers offer on a house. Still unsure about the benefits of home staging? Call a local home staging consultant and find out more. Having your house professionally staged can mean the difference between a house sitting on the market or selling faster and for top dollar.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Bladder Infections Not Always Painful DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please write something about bladder infections. Can you have a bladder infection with no symptoms? — A. ANSWER: The signs and symptoms of bladder infections are the same for men and women. The irritated, infected bladder demands frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom so it can be emptied. People have a burning sensation when passing urine. Pain is felt in the bladder area. Sometimes blood appears in the urine. Men have far fewer bladder infections than women. Women have a shorter urethra than men. The urethra is the tube that empties the bladder of urine. Women’s urethras open in an area that has a large bacterial population. Bacteria can ascend the female urethra without trouble. It’s harder for them to climb the male urethra. And men’s prostate glands secrete substances that have antibacterial properties. The presence of bacteria in the urine without any signs of bladder infection is called asymptomatic bacteriuria. Doctors treat pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria to prevent symptoms from arising, as they often do during pregnancy. Infected urine, even without symptoms, can lower the birth weight of babies who were in the uterus during that period. Otherwise, asymptomatic bacteriuria in women or men, at any age, usually does not require treatment. In women, bacteria in the bladder are often transiently there. They disappear many times on their own. Treatment can lead to the development of resistant bacteria and can produce side effects. Furthermore, it is costly. The guidance from most experts, therefore, is not to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria. Exceptions exist. Diabetics might benefit from treatment. The topic of urinary tract infections and their treatment are covered in the booklet on that topic. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue — No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

Rheta Grimsley Johnson at Newnan Carnegie Library June 16th at Noon The ever popular Barbie doll is 50 years old this year! The Newnan Carnegie Library Foundation is marking this passage with a lunchen program Wednesday, June 16 featuring award-winning journalist Rheta Grimsley Johnson discussing her newest book Enchanged Evening Barbie and the Second Coming: A Memoir. Johnson’s memorable journalism career began on her Auburn University newspaper, The Auburn Plainsman, where she became the editor and also contributed to rural weeklies. While she was still in her 20s, she began writing a syndicated humaninterest column for the Memphis Commercial Appeal. After Lewis Grizzard died, the Atlanta Constitution hired her to take his place and dispatched her around the country looking for stories. She worked in Atlanta for seven years while living in Carrollton, Georgia. Her writing was punctuated by her distinctive writing voice and an unerring knack for revealing her much-loved South through uncommon stories about its common people. Her stories of life in the South ring true to her many fans. In that same warm and down to earth voice Johnson utilitizes Barbie as a basis for deeper examination — through her own life experiences — of “our inner Barbies,” her identity as a newspaperwoman in a changing world, and, more specifically, how the South shapes its daughters. The event is free and open to the public, just bring a lunch and NCLF will provide the birthday cake. The doors open at 11:30 and the program will start at 12. Ms. Johnson will have a book signing at Scott’s Bookstore at 3 p.m.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta One Dog Gets the Bed, the Other the Floor DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I should buy stock in the aluminum foil industry? My 6-year-old boxer/hound mix, Shera, will not stay off the furniture. My bed and livingroom furniture are lined with aluminum foil to stop her from climbing them. I have a 14-year-old dog, Bubba, who sleeps with me at night, but never occupies the bed or furniture by day. Shera is kennel trained and sleeps in her kennel at night with the door fastened. Bubba is getting near the end, and I don’t want to take on another dog until I solve this problem with Shera. Would it be best to wait until Bubba is not sleeping with me to correct this territorial issue? — Susan W., via email DEAR SUSAN: I don’t think this is a territorial issue so much as an issue of Shera figuring out how far to push her boundaries. Naturally, she will want to get up on the couch or the bed just like Bubba. But you don’t have to wait until Bubba is gone to start addressing Shera’s behavior. You can choose to wait — especially if taking care of Bubba is stressful right now and you just don’t want to deal with a new challenge. Shera’s behavior probably will not change during this period. But if you have the time and energy, start training Shera to stay off the furniture. It’s a matter of you being the leader of the family, and what you say goes. That means if Bubba gets to sleep on the bed and Shera doesn’t, too tough for Shera. As far as how: I’d recommend spending more time with Shera, playing or doing basic obedience training on the leash, next to the furniture she likes to jump on. When she wants to get on the couch, tug her away, have her face you and command “sit” or “lie down” and “stay.” Basically, retrain her way of thinking about the purpose of those rooms. Meet Truett Cathy founder of Chick-Fil-A by Joe Williams

Almost everyone knows the Chick-Fil-A name and some can associate Truett Cathy as founder of the company. Yet only a few have had the opportunity to meet Mr. Cathy and hear his philosophy of what it takes to be successful in the restaurant business and in the business of life. I got just that opportunity last week when he visited the Newnan Kiwanis Club as a guest of his friend and business associate, Mitchell Hix, of UniGlobe Travel.

6-15-10 41 Yrs .

He granted me a few minutes of his time for this article and suggested that I refer to his latest book, How Did You Do It, Truett?.

Joe Williams and Truett Cathy About two thirds of all store operators have come up from the ranks. Mr. Cathy quoted one of his favorite Bible verses at our Kiwanis meeting: Proverbs 22:1. A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor than silver and gold. He believes in leading by example but he doesn't see Chick-Fil-A as a platform for his faith - rather he applies faith principles to his business. You won't find any of his restaurants open on Sunday, and he is sometimes criticized for that. "We close on Sunday because we think it's the right thing to do". Perhaps he has been a very lucky man to have been so successful. He agrees, then clarifies his answer. "If you examine luck, you will usually find that the people who have been lucky have also worked hard, understood the value of a dollar and taken advantage of unexpected opportunities". So, as you meet Truett Cathy through this article, meet a man who believes in hard work, treating others as he would want to be treated and honors God through his business and personal life. Quite a man!

Since starting his first restaurant in 1946, Truett Cathy knew he had to treat his customers the way he would want to be treated, and serve good food. This philosophy still holds true today in the success of his more than 1400 locations throughout the country. "Our customers expect delicious food, delivered quickly and accurately, in a clean environment. To that, we add courtesy and kindness", says Mr. Cathy. When it comes to hiring good people he feels the same way. "The kinder you are to your people, the more productive they will be". Chick-Fil-A tries hard to hire people of good character over experience. They then have a solid foundation on which to build experience.

We all know that the scorecard of any business is the profit it produces. Without profit, we cannot take care of our employees, our families, or contribute to the betterment of our communities. The question is: How do we blance the pursuit of profit and personal character? For me, I find that balance by applying Biblical principles. I see no conflict between Biblical principles and good business practice.

— Truett Cathy

By the way, I want to be just like Mr. Cathy when I grow up!
