Making Science More Engaging With Technology (NAPSI)-While most parents and teachers agree that science education is important for a child’s future, many also say it needs to be more engaging to capture the attention of kids today. A new national survey conducted by Harris Interactive shows how technology, including the Internet, is a good way to provide the resources and teacher mentoring opportunities that will help kindle a

love of science in children. The survey showed that almost all science teachers (97 percent) and parents (92 percent) agree that the Internet should be used more to make interesting science education materials available to teachers. Additionally, they agree that it can be a great way to support mentoring efforts (99 percent and 96 percent, respectively) and a good tool for parents to engage in their child’s education (98 percent and 96 percent, respectively).

“It is important that students today understand that science is more than what they read in a textbook,” said David Miller, president and CEO of the educational nonprofit Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization Institute (iBIO). “As educators, parents and mentors, it is our responsibility to take science beyond the pages of a book.” To help science teachers make science more engaging and relevant in the classroom, Astellas Pharma US, Inc. launched Science WoRx, a program that provides mentoring opportunities with real-world scientists, as well as online resources for teachers, all accessible through the Internet. Through video lessons and online resources such as Skype, teachers can bring a Science Pro into their classroom virtually to work with their students and conduct grade-level-appropriate experiments that demonstrate the impact of science. Parents can even watch the videos with their kids, helping them learn more and get more excited about science from their home computer.

More information about Science WoRx and the Virtual Science Pro program can be found at www.ScienceWoRx. org.

he invention of the modern computer and the prolific evolution of the World Wide Web have significantly altered the way we live in the last couple of decades. We seem to be in constant communication with those we know as well as building relationships with people we have never actually met. Messages are instantly sent and received with documents and photos attached, and we can borrow, buy and sell at will. The knowledge of the world is literally at our finger tips – that is, of course, for those who are willing to learn and harness this important technology. OK, I admit it. When it comes to technology, I guess I’m just a “stick in the mud”. I don’t feel the need to jump up early in the morning and check my E-mail, as there is no computer in my home. I’ve never sent or received a text message, and the only blackberries we have will be served in a cobbler later this week. But don’t get me wrong. We do have running water and electricity, as well as a phone and a television. Our TV is connected to an aluminum antenna attached to the roof of our home which magically provides us with at least three stations from which to choose! I also have a cell phone. I don’t type on it or surf the web, and I don’t take pictures. It does, however, come in handy when I actually want to “speak” with someone. There are plenty of real books in our home and I enjoy using the public library. There is just nothing quite like a good book, a comfortable chair and a cup of Earl Gray tea. Inasmuch as I enjoy touting the merits of a simple life at home, I am quickly jerked back into the new, real world of technology the moment I get to my office. My staff are E-mailing, up-loading, downloading and unloading. They use PDF, JPEG, peg leg and There is just anything else which will help them get the job done. We nothing quite like could not run our publishing business without this wona good book, derful technology available to us.

Car Show … Bug-A-Rama All Volkswagen Car Show Saturday, Nov. 13, 11 to 3

Bob Spruck, a 32 year resident of Sharpsburg, has been a British sports car enthusiast since the ‘60s. Most of the grunts in Vietnam dreamed of buying their dream car upon their return to the world. Bob did, too, except rather than dreaming of the muscle cars that were so popular at the time, like Mustangs, Camaros, and GTOs, he dreamed of Austin Healey Sprites and MGs. When he did safely return, he bought a used Sunbeam Alpine. He followed that with a few Bugeye Sprites and MG Midgets. To experience the unique and sporty characteristics of British sports cars, he participated in autocrosses and gymknanas at local airports and shopping center parking lots. Career, grad school, his first house, two children, and a move to Georgia all contributed to a twenty year hiatus during which he had no sports car but still retained his interest and enthusiasm. In 1989, while at a vintage sports car race at Road Atlanta, near Gainesville, GA and hearing the names and home towns of the entrants in the next race announced on the PA system, he heard the name of a racer from Newnan. He found him in the paddock later, introduced himself and explained his latent desire to get re-involved with sports cars and racing. His enthusiasm got him an invitation to the guy’s home shop to see his race car close up and then a request to be his crewman, supporting him at races and working on the car between races. Bob even bought a tired 1972 MG Midget that he restored to use on the street and to exhibit in car shows. After a while, he thought he’d like to build a race car for himself, so he and his race partner built one from an abandoned restoration project. Bob has vintage raced that 1967 Midget since 1991 and has almost 50 races on it. Vintage racing is defined as road racing a sports car or sedan manufactured before about 1974. There are about thirty organizations all over the country that sponsor races. Cars can be prepared only as they would have been able to be prepared in their year of manufacture and raced accordingly. Bob has raced his car two to four times a year at such tracks as Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen (NY), Virginia International Raceway, Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Roebling Road Raceway near Savannah, Carolina Motorsports Park, and even the old road course layout at Atlanta

elcome to The Shopper’s new column, Legal Briefs. Our goal will be to regularly provide informative articles about areas of the law that affect everyday life. Today we begin with auto accidents, and the importance of UM Coverage.

According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, there are 839 crashes daily on Georgia’s roadways. Some are minor fender-benders, but many are major wrecks causing injury and death due to careless drivers’ poor judgment and driver negligence. The increased use of cell phones by drivers is an example of such negligence. Further, many negligent drivers only have minimum liability insurance coverage of $25,000.00, which is often not enough to pay for all of your injuries and damage. Therefore, it’s very important that all drivers carry Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage (UM) in addition to carrying your liability coverage required by law. UM Coverage is very inexpensive, but is invaluable if you are injured and “the other guy” does not have you fully covered. Our firm had a recent case where our client was seriously injured by a negligent driver. The careless driver only had the legal minimum coverage of $25,000, and he had no significant personal accounts or assets to help pay for the damages he caused our client. Fortunately, our client carried his own UM coverage, and we were able to use that coverage to get our client an extra $100,000.00 in much needed compensation. If our client had not signed up for his own UM coverage, he would have only received $25,000.00, which was not enough for his medical bills and the damages to his life and to his family. So, make sure you ask your own auto insurance agent about getting UM coverage, in case “the other guy” does not have you covered. If you are involved in a wreck, you must take the following steps to protect your rights. Don’t move your vehicle unless you in an unsafe situation. This allows the authorities to analyze fault. Call the police. A police report of the accident will help your insurance claim and any liability claims. Exchange information with the other driver. This will be helpful in getting all information needed before the accident report is completed. Call your insurance agent as soon as possible after an accident. Your insurance company may have cause to deny coverage if you fail to give prompt notice of the wreck. In future articles we will explore what to do if you are injured in the wreck. If you have been in an auto accident, and you have any questions or concerns, or need experienced professional assistance with your claims, please give us a call, and we will be glad to help you. Golden rod and Black-eyed Susans really say Fall! So do rabbit tobacco, Liatris (also known as gayfeather or Blazing Star), Joepye weed, Wild ageratum, Mullein, Yarrow, and the dried blooms and colorful leaves of the Oak-leaf hydrangea. Many wildflowers are now grown commercially and are readily available at garden centers, nurseries, or in plant catalogs. Plants that are common are such as: Yucca, Bee-Balm, Liatris, Blanket flower, Yarrow, Blackberry lily, Crested dwarf iris, violets, Evening primrose, Passion Flower, Beauty berry and countless others. A wildflower is a plant that grows and reproduces on its own in woods, fields, wetlands, along road sides, and other uncultivated areas. Some plants not originally from Georgia have long ago escaped into the wild and are now thought of as wildflowers. The common orange ditch lily, the multiflora rose, purple Loostrife, Kudzu, Japanese honey suckle, and even the state flower of Georgia - the Cherokee Rose - are not true native plants. Wildflowers can be used in our home landscapes, parks, and on road sides to attract and support birds, bees, and butterflies. In return the bees carry out the very necessary work of pollinating plants. Butterflies also aid in pollination. Birds spread plants by spreading seeds. When growing wildflowers, be sure to select those that would naturally grow in the area. Clear out sod and other plants. Till and rake the soil and sow the seeds. Have good soil contact, lightly cover, and water. Don’t compact the soil. Continue watering regularly for several weeks. Sow on a calm day, mixing seeds with sand to spread. A light mulch of pine straw - not hay - could protect the seeds and shade them. Fall is a good time to plant wild flowers in the Piedmont region of Georgia.

“How am I going to get rid of all this stuff?” by Nan Johnston of Southern Staging & Redesign “How am I going to get rid of all this stuff?” This is the question that I most often hear when I meet with staging clients and help them prepare their house to be in showing condition. Unless you are a minimalist, and most of us are not, we accumulate furniture, accessories, grandma’s old antique clock, and children’s out grown items. You name it, I’ve seen it in someone’s, garage, closet or basement. We hate to get rid of these possessions, but we don’t use them any longer, and you hate to just throw them out. A yard sale is not an option due to time, energy or enthusiasm and you really hate to donate some thing’s, when you know that you may be able to sell these things and put a little bit of “green” in your pocket. One solution to this particular problem is to contact a consignment shop. Located in Historical Newnan, GA, next to Scott’s Bookstore, you will find one of the most charming shops on the square. Owner Janet Elliott Cantrell will make it easy and take the drudgery out of selling your unneeded items in her shop, Encore Decor. I sat down with Janet to ask her a few questions about how all of this works; Who is your buyer or seller? My seller is someone needing to downsize or either they are remodeling or moving. The buyers are usually new home buyers, newlyweds, anyone furnishing 2nd homes at the beach, lake or mountains. What are your best selling items? The best selling items, without question are the accessories and home decor. We sell a great many items as gifts for birthdays and weddings. Furniture usually involves return visits for measurements, etc. We offer gift registry for brides and also keep individual gift cards for our regular customer to include in the gift.

Where do you find your merchandise? 90% of our merchandise comes from consignors. I can either go see what they want to sell or they bring items to me at the shop. The shop was full when we first opened with consigner items. People would stop in when they were walking buy and ask what we were doing and they started bringing their treasures in for us to sell. How does it work? commissions? etc. If someone has enough to warrant a personal visit to their home, I’ll go and choose the higher quality items or they can bring things to the shop. It’s helpful if the seller knows how much they want to net off of a piece. If I think that I can bring it back and sell it, we offer a 50/50 split between us and the consigner. Give us a good example of comparing consignment shop purchases to regular retail. With consignment shop purchase you’ll find unique items not found at retail stores, or the prices will be greatly reduced from anywhere to 1/3 to 1/2 of retail. And with consignment shop items, there’s always a story behind every piece. In Newnan, people will make purchase on items just because it used to belong to someone special that they knew in the community. How is this different than say, a flea market or yard sale? The main difference is the setting of the store, the way everything is displayed in an appealing manner, we’re located in Historic Downtown Newnan and a lot of my customers are walking around our beautiful town and stop in to see us … I wouldn’t get near the traffic if I were on Bullsboro or a busy road somewhere. What are you looking for when you take on a consignment piece? Unique items that can either be updated with a fresh coat of paint or stain, one-of-a- kind pieces that you won’t find in retail stores. We also have great local artist work in the shop. We are the exclusive shop in Newnan that offer one artist unique pencil renderings of Historical Newnan or Atlanta landmarks. So the next time you either want to unload unwanted furniture or find that special piece at a fraction of what something would cost new, go see Janet at Encore Decor.
