Summer 2018 Newsletter
“What is in your hand?” “And the Lord said to him, what is that in your hand? And he said, A rod.” We’re excited to be sending you our redesigned new style newsletter. Back in January British Youth for Christ unveiled its nationwide rebrand, and over the proceeding months we have been working hard to follow suit, overhauling our “look” to better represent what we stand for as an organisation. Over the next few pages you will find stories of some our recent ministry highlights, including some significant developments to our work in schools. You will discover that it isn’t just our branding that has changed. We’re excited about the path that God has clearly called Coventry Youth For Christ to tread and the changes that have been involved in that process so far. This is a great opportunity to tell you about it all in one place. As a Christian organisation we have always been about seeing young lives changed by Jesus, and even though the core mission of our organisation doesn’t change, the way in which we see that outworked on a day-to-day basis can look significantly different as we respond to ever-changing local needs and seek to follow God’s direction for our ministry to young people. When Moses encountered God in the desert, The Lord asked him a simple question, “What is that in your hand?” God was able to use the staff of Moses to perform miracles that would eventually lead to the freeing of the nation of Israel from slavery in Egypt. Having encountered this passage of scripture several times in recent months, I have been reminded that our God is in the business of using the skills, gifts and possessions of His people to fulfil His purposes on earth. So what is in your hand? A mobile phone? A guitar? Time? Whatever your answer, God can use what little you may have to make a massive difference. Our team are working with renewed vigour as we use the specific skills that God has given us to engage with young people across our city. Read on to find out more. Thank you for standing with us as we take the Good News of Jesus to young people.
The HIGHER Tour As many of you will know, the Higher Tour has been and gone, with over 2 years of communication and relationship building between local Coventry churches enabling it to happen! And what an amazing impact the mission has had. Over the 2 weeks of Higher Tour 28,701 young people from across 47 schools in the Midlands got to hear about Jesus, and if that isn't incredible enough 1,230 young people made a decision to follow Him! This is INCREDIBLE NEWS! Who knows what seeds were also planted in the hearts of all those who heard the message! The whole vision behind the Higher Tour was to see the local church pick up the baton when the various tour teams had been and played their part. It has always been the role of the local church to disciple young people, to further relationships that have been made, whether through personal friendships or mission in schools and we have loved being a part of this process As well as resourcing and running follow up training for local churches, CYFC had the incredible opportunity to serve in Ernesford Grange school for three days with band “Amongst Wolves” and were able to make some great connections with teaching staff who are keen for us to continue our involvement in the school. It’s great that we have also been able to connect the school with a local church who are able to serve the school. We’re delighted that the Higher Tour has had such a positive influence on the lives of so many young people. Please pray for us as we continue ‘fan the flame’ in churches and schools across the city.
New school - New Opportunities For several months now we have had the pleasure of working in Finham Park 2. The school have been so supportive of us and have invited us to be involved for 3 days each week, opening up the music department at lunch times where we have had the chance to build some great relationships with pupils and teachers alike. Further to this, we are involved with regular religious education lessons and assemblies which has helped us to become known by the wider school community. The school are currently working on a production of the “School of Rock” musical and we have been involved in supporting pupils develop a band to rehearse and perform the various songs for the show. We we even privileged to join teachers and pupils when they travelled to see the official production in London. We are so excited to see how this partnership grows. Our hope is that some of the pupils will join us for our showcase event in June to perform some of the songs from the show. We are also working in Grace Academy as part of a small team delivering the “Kleer Series” - an introduction to the Christian faith, focusing on the bigger questions that are facing young people today. This has honestly been such a joy to be part of. Young people have openly expressed issues around self worth, but have come back every week to be encouraged by us and what we are speaking about, there is always someone in the team to speak LIFE over them. Please join us in praying for the pupils (and staff) that we are engaged with - that they would find be blessed by our involvement and ultimately find hope and fulfilment in Jesus.
Drench @ St Catherine’s Currently there are five different Youth Cafés running in churches across the city. They are proving to be a great place for young people to hang out with their mates. At the St. Catherine’s Cafe we have tons of fun and the youth have really built great relationships with our team. Drench is something that we advertise to schools in the area too, as all the local youth services have closed down, but we are still here! Through the relationships we have made with the young people, we have now started St Catherine’s first youth group on a Friday after school and we hope to be taking some of the youth away to Soul Survivor over the summer. The great thing about Drench is that you don’t have to be an amazing youth leader, you just need a heart for unchurched young people and to be available to give them the time they deserve. Our vision is that every young person who lives in Coventry have access to a Drench Youth Café within 2 miles of where they live! It may seem bold, but great things were never achieved by mediocre dreams. Dave Boyle
Considering a gap year? Why not join us for 10 months as we take Good News to young people across Coventry. We currently have opportunities for young adults to serve on the Coventry Youth for Christ team as youth work interns, with a specific focus on using music to connect with pupils in schools and churches. Could God be calling YOU to make a dierence in Coventry? Your time would be spent serving young people in schools and supporting local youth cafes in churches for 3 days each week, giving you plenty of time to find part-time employment to earn yourself some cash throughout the year. You would also be involved in citywide and national projects whilst engaging in a journey of personal discipleship with regular theology and youth work training. Interested? Two Famous Courses, One Good Cause… If you’ve been a supporter of Coventry Youth for Christ for a while, you’ll know that our director, Jon, likes to set himself ridiculous personal challenges to raise funds to aid our ministry. Well, this year is no different, but this time we’re doing it together!! The plan is to take part in two nationally organised cycling challenges, over two consecutive weekends this September. But we need to build a team. On September 15th we’ll be taking part in a 24 hour relay event around the Brand’s Hatch Formula One course, clocking up as many laps as we can in the time available. And then on September 22nd we’ll be heading to the Isle of Man to cycle the famous TT route (twice). Either one of these events would be a challenge in itself, but to complete both will be a real achievement, and all to raise awareness and funds for our ongoing ministry. We’ve set ourselves a massive fundraising target of £10,000 which will enable us to develop our new gap-year programme and train local people to engage with unchurched young people across our city. We would love you to support us in this venture by sponsoring our efforts or by joining us for either one or both challenges. You can find more details (including links to sponsorship pages) online. coventry.yfc.co.uk/2for1 Thank You for your support.
