Fall 2015 Issue

2014-2015 ANNUAL REPORT 21 EAST ELEVENTH STREET • COVINGTON, KY 41011 • 859.291.7044 • covingtonlatin.org

From the Headmaster’s Desk Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, The 2014-2015 school year was filled with both joy and sorrow. Last October, we laid Mr. Dennis P. Whitehead ’62 to rest. Denny’s influence on our identity as a school cannot be overstated. And his contributions – both to the School itself and the countless students he inspired – are simply immeasurable. His enduring spirit remains with all of us, encouraging us to deepen our intellectual curiosity and grow in Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. In May, we said farewell to the Class of 2015, whom among other accomplishments, averaged an impressive 29.5 ACT score (compared to the KY average of 20.0) and over $213,000 per student in scholarship offers. They have headed off to an impressive array of colleges, universities and study abroad opportunities in Brazil and Germany. In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, charitable gifts made to Latin School increased by a stunning 25%, due largely to growth in foundation gifts and the generosity of our donors. Donor contributions are critical to our continued institutional growth and we are deeply grateful for your irreplaceable partnership. From this year’s influx of new faculty talent, to the implementation of our 1:1 Google Chromebook program, I hope you’ll agree that Latin School is as vibrant as ever. We continue to prepare tomorrow’s leaders by welcoming the region’s best and brightest, and challenging them spiritually and intellectually to ensure they leave with great hearts and great minds. Please know how grateful we are for your invaluable support and be assured of our prayers for you and your loved ones.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Mo Woltering Headmaster

REVEREND Jim Ryan

When Father James B. Egbers ’64 was notified that he would be recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award at the 2015 Alumni Banquet in May, he balked.

When Father Jim Ryan ‘62 was in the sixth grade, he wrote a letter to the Bishop of Covington. He’d made the decision to not attend Covington Latin School, and according to custom of the time, needed to inform His Excellency .

Vocation Corner

“Surely you have someone much more qualified than me,” he objected. And to be sure, the slate of his fellow nominees was impressive. But the opportunity to recognize a celebrated Diocesan priest who was first a decorated war veteran and Special Agent for the FBI, doesn’t come every day. We knew his Distinguished Alumnus Award was well-deserved when we honored him, we just didn’t know how timely. On August 30, 2015, Father Egbers passed away at the age of 67. After graduating from Latin School in 1964 and Xavier University in 1968, he enlisted in the Army Infantry and was awarded a Bronze Star for his combat service in Vietnam. (In his award acceptance speech, Father comically noted that CLS military drill had not been a particularly useful form of preparation.) Upon completing his military service, he joined the FBI and served as a Special Agent from 1973-1989. And after he answered the call to serve his country, he answered the call to serve the Kingdom of God. He was accepted as a seminarian in 1992, completed a Masters of Divinity at Sacred Heart Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Muench on May 25, 1996. As a priest in the Diocese of Covington for 19 years, his pastorates included St. Catherine in Ft. Thomas, St. Mary in Alexandria and most recently, St. Paul in Florence. Of his many exemplary attributes, he was perhaps best known for his selfless commitment to serving others – a unifying theme amid a rich and varied life.

5

He had chosen instead to enroll in the high school seminary to pursue, straightaway, his dream of becoming a priest. When he arrived at the seminary, though, he noted the conspicuous absence of classrooms, textbooks and teachers. To his surprise, he learned the seminary’s classroom education would be outsourced and the next day, a young Jim Ryan and his fellow seminarians boarded a bus and were sent to Covington Latin, marking the beginning of a relationship spanning nearly 60 years – and counting.

Vocartion Alumni Spotlight Corner

Father James B. Egbers

‘62

Latin School was not part of the path Father Ryan envisioned, but a pattern began to emerge, in which unexpected turns would become a recurring theme in Father’s life. His CLS journey picked up again in 1972 when was invited to teach at his alma mater – and just as he had settled with the idea that he would probably teach Latin and Church History for the rest of his life, he was appointed Headmaster in 1983. After four years in that role (and thinking his niche had been established in education) he was asked by Bishop Hughes to undertake Canon Law studies in Washington, DC. The Yiddish proverb “man plans and God laughs” seems fitting. And throughout his many and varied roles and experiences since returning from Washington, he has always remained close to Latin School as a beloved friend and trusted advisor. When asked about the impact Covington Latin has had on him, he paused and began thoughtfully, “Covington Latin has shaped every dimension of my life. Of primary importance was learning to understand an issue from all sides while still holding to the truth” – a lesson that was never explicitly taught, but learned from the example of his teachers. The study of Latin and Greek gave him an appreciation for the precision of language – something that Latin School continues to emphasize and develop among students. As for the future, Father Ryan hopes that Latin School will continue to produce the same caliber of leaders based on the solid foundation he experienced as a student. “Covington Latin School is an institution that grows out of the Catholic understanding of the wholeness of the universe, the integrity of the human person, and that we are made in the image and likeness of God,” he reflected. “We are called to explore all of the dimensions of human life and to understand them as best we can. I think that forms a great background for people.” After forty years as a priest in the Diocese of Covington, Father Ryan retired in July, allowing him to now focus on his advisory roles, serving people and celebrating the sacraments, without the responsibility of administration. Retirement offers an opportunity to both look to the future, while providing a moment to reflect on the past. “On the whole, it has all been wonderful…perhaps a blessing more experienced than explained.”
