Then Joan Humble, Chair of Civic Voice, came along to unveil the plaque, and in her address she explained how the awards are unique in England as a national celebration of good design and restoration projects nominated by local community organisations. We have already entered the competition for 2017 with a paper describing conservation work in Far Gosford Street (see page 4). On Civic Day in June Paul Maddocks organised a Public Art

Tour, and at the Civic Voice Convention, achievements of those who participated in Civic Day were announced, one of them being The Coventry Society. For many years the Coventry Society campaigned for the regeneration of Far Gosford Street, but early responses were superficial and not game changing. However over the past few years a powerful partnership between the City Council and an inspirational business leader has brought about a major economic, environment and social regeneration of the street. In our view the project demonstrates the benefits of the local authority and the private sector working together. It demonstrates the value of integrated regeneration, comprising economic development as well as environmental work. It also demonstrates very high quality restoration. We nominated this project not only in recognising the physical achievements of this project, but also acknowledging the high level of community engagement in the development of the project. The Far Gosford Street Project has brought about regeneration of a rundown inner city shopping street and saved and conserved some of the most important Chair a : Keith Draper, ho p odu es the e slette ea h o th, has a spe ial i te est i suppo ti g s all t ade s i the it e t e.
