Labor Day brings to mind picnics, cookouts and family gatherings. Falling on the first Monday in September, it marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. But the holiday was created in 1882 to honor the social and economic contributions of American workers. In a strong economy, it’s easy to take for granted the ability to work and be paid well. But times have changed during the past few years, with many people still struggling with unemployment and underemployment. During our holiday celebrations this year, let’s give thanks for the jobs we have, pray for those who aren’t as fortunate and offer words of encouragement or help to someone who needs it.

Make this year a time to renew your commitment to peacemaking as part of your calling as a follower of Christ. Our congregation is encouraged to retain 25 percent of the Offering it receives to use for local ministries of peacemaking within the church and its community. Twenty-five percent is used by presbyteries and synods, and fifty percent is used by the General Assembly ministries through the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. Please take time to read the weekly inserts in your worship guide starting 9/15. We will receive this offering on October 6, World Communion Sunday.

September 22 - First day of Autumn

What a month we had in August! There was so much going on here at Covenant with the main event being Ken’s retirement. The party on August 24 was a huge success and I know Ken found it a very humbling experience. So many people showed up to let him know just how much he has meant to the people of Covenant and the community of Springboro. August 25, his last Sunday here to deliver a sermon, was both a joyous and sad occasion. Ken has entered a new phase in his life that we all hope to reach someday. Yet it’s always sad to leave the friends and coworkers we have had the pleasure to know for all those years. I know we all wish both Ken and Diane the very best as they travel, remodel, relax, and spoil little Oliver just like a grandson should be spoiled. Thank you, Ken, for everything! We’ll miss you! Janet
