We are collecting items for Patrik Hornak for his apartment at UC Med School this fall. Growing in Grace is asking the congregation to help out. In this small way we can help him in his life long commitment to help others. On the table in the Worship Center is a list of needed items. Bring in new or gently used items by July 28. Let’s help send Patrik off with the things he needs to make this happen! There is a basket with his name on it in the narthex next to Clothes That Work. Any questions, please see Flossie Power or Linda Eaton. Thank you!

Kingdom Rock, our VBS theme this year, is July 29-August 2, from 9-11:30 a.m. daily. Volunteers are still needed in several areas. If you would like to help, check out the sign up sheets on the office door. You’ll spend a week spreading the Word of God to the children of our community. They’ll enjoy games, food, and fun activities. Help make Kingdom Rock another fantastic week of VBS here at Covenant. If you would like to help with needed supplies for VBS, then take a shield or two off of the nursery room door. If you have any questions about this year’s VBS, see Erica Hicks or call 748-0272. Our Kingdom Rocks!!

News from Session With the recent announcement of Ken Howard’s desire to retire from pastoral duties here at Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Session has begun the process of finding a replacement using the steps required by Presbytery. First, we have formed a session committee to find an interim Pastor. The committee members are: Loretta Sebastian (chair), David Payne, George Mourouzis, Vera Escott, and Gordon Neumann. Also part of this committee is our representative from COM (Presbytery Committee on Ministry): Greg Gibson. Once hired, the interim Pastor will be in place to handle many of the duties that Ken performed. It is the intent of the interim pastor search committee to have an interim pastor in place by September. After Ken’s last day, the church will be able to set up the Pastor Nominating Committee to work through those details of seeking a new pastor. This committee will be made up of members from the entire congregation. Again Greg will be assisting us along the way. Hiring a new pastor will take about a year. Session will continue to keep you updated throughout the process. Please know that we (members of session) are available to answer any questions that you may have. Yours in Christ, Gordon Neumann Clerk of Session

Special Dates July 04 - U.S. Independence Day

I do get involved in political conversations with people now and then, but I am not one to get involved in politics from the pulpit. There are good people from both sides of the political spectrum that worship with us, as well as a lot of people in the middle. My goal in preaching has always been to share what I believe scripture teaches. But there is a particular issue, which may or may not be considered political, that I wish to address from the pulpit on July 7. My sermon that Sunday will be “Science or Theology – a Look at Creation.” Springboro Schools continues to make headlines in the paper and on TV. Mike Peters’ cartoon in the Dayton Daily News (either June 7th or 8th) showed five monkeys walking into a school board meeting. The papers report on school board meetings where creationism is discussed. On Sunday morning, June 2, one of our school board members was quoted on Fox and Friends where creationism in Springboro Schools was discussed on national TV. The ACLU has threatened action. Cincinnati and Dayton TV stations have attended board meetings. I received a phone call (actually he left a message) from a resident of the community urging all churches to get behind the school board’s attempt to get the teaching of creationism into our school system. I received a letter from a local pastor that is “seeking the cooperation of as many area pastors as possible in support of a policy the Springboro Board of Education is seeking to put into practice.” The bold and italics portion was included in the letter. I have met with local pastors recently as we debated whether we should or should not make a public statement, knowing that statement would reflect our beliefs and not necessarily the beliefs of all the pastors in Springboro. Creationism and other issues are certainly hot topics in Springboro! We will include in worship on July 7th the Apostles’ Creed that begins, “I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.” I will share the stories (yes, stories) of creation that we find in Genesis 1 and 2. My intention is to address what I believe scripture teaches us about creation. Does it teach us the how of creation or the why of creation? What is the meaning of the creation stories (there’s that plural word again!). I hope you’ll join us for worship on July 7th (actually, I hope you can be with us every Sunday!). May God speak to us through these incredible words of scripture. Ken
