Toys for Tots celebrates 237th Anniversary On November 10th, 237 years ago, the United States Marine Corps was formed in the Tun Tavern, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1947, with a hand crafted doll, the Marine Corps Reserves in Los Angles, California started Toys for Tots. The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations. The 2012 toy collection season will begin right after Halloween. You will see the collection boxes around town and we invite you to participate in this important opportunity to make a Merry Christmas possible for needy youngsters in Shelby County. October is Red Ribbon Month MISSION STATEMENT: To provide an organization through which the community can develop, plan, and implement coordinated, comprehensive efforts to address the substance abuse problems of adults and youth and to reduce the negative effects of these behaviors. WHO ARE WE? The Shelby County Drug Free Coalition was established in 1990 with a mission to provide an organization through which community members can develop, plan, and implement comprehensive efforts to address substance abuse issues. WHAT DO WE DO? The primary function of the Coalition is to research community substance abuse problems, develop action plans to address the problems, and finally, implement or support the implementation of strategies which lead to change. HOW DO WE DO IT? We offer support by coordinating community outreach and educational opportunities. We offer leadership by identifying and promoting community substance abuse problems and the negative issues that surround them. We provide funding for agencies and organizations addressing substance abuse through an annual grant cycle. HOW IS THE COALITION FUNDED? The Drug Free Coalition receives a portion of the court fees collected from all drug and alcohol offenders in Shelby County. Seventy-five percent of these funds is funneled directly back into the community by way of grant awards. In 2001, the Drug Free Coalition was awarded the Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Grant, which is a portion of the tobacco settlement funds. Finally, the Coalition is a recipient of the Federal Drug Free Communities Support Grant. This grant consists of federal funds designated by congress for grassroots coalitions who seek to reduce youth substance abuse and over time adult substance abuse. WHO MAKES UP THE COALITION? Concerned citizens, school staff, law enforcement agents, doctors, nurses, faith-based leaders, community leaders, social service providers, and a variety of others representing a broad base of community agencies, we are always looking for more! Delta Theta Tau
The 40th annual Delta Theta Tau Gift and Hobby Show is scheduled for November 3rd at Shelbyville Middle School, located at 1200 West McKay Road. The doors open at 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. with FREE Admission. The Gift and Hobby Show started in 1972 at the Carl McNeely Civic center with under 50 booths. In 1989 and 1990 the show was moved to Shelbyville High School because the show had outgrown the Civic Center. In 1991 with the opening of Shelbyville Middle School the group moved to the new school hosting 55 booths. The Shelbyville Middle School has been a wonderful facility for the show and each year the show grows. This year we will have over 125 booths. The Sorority is pleased with the variety of vendors we have this year. The vendors include local churches, service organizations and individuals selling jewelry, pottery, porcelain, stained glass, purses, cheese balls, candles, quilts and floral arrangements. Visitors to the show can plan to spend hours browsing through the many booths, and if they get hungry, the Sorority offers chili, sloppy joes, hot dogs, mac n cheese, pies, brownies and cake. The Gift and Hobby Show provides the funds for the sorority’s philanthropic activities. The sorority is proud to present a scholarship to each of the 5 county schools in Shelby County in addition to contributing to Hospice of Shelby County, Shelby Community Health Clinic, Waldron Imagination Library, Shelby County Senior Services, and the Salvation Army. The Zeta Lambda Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Philanthropic Sorority was chartered in Shelbyville in March 1938. In March 2013, the chapter will celebrate 75 years of philanthropic work in Shelby County. The group is small with only 23 members putting on the show. Our hearts are full of caring for Shelby County and we enjoy the ripple effect our Gift and Hobby Show has in our community. Indiana Grand Casino doubles funds raised to fight lung disease Indiana Grand Casino helped raise more than $22,000 during the annual LAM at The Links Golf Scramble fundraising event held in August. For the past three years, the Casino has doubled the money raised during the annual fundraising event ---- reaching a total of nearly $40,000. Fundraising efforts increased from $5,000 in 2010, to $10,000 in 2011, to the -- still growing -- $22,000 plus in 2012 ---- all to help fund research needed to find a treatment or cure for Lymphangioleiomyomatosis, or LAM, a life-threatening lung disease. LAM causes destruction throughout the body, often in the lungs, kidneys and lymphatics. Over time, patients may progress to respiratory failure as cysts take over normal lung tissue. There is no known cure or treatment, and the mechanisms of destruction of lung and other tissues in LAM are poorly understood. Title sponsor for the LAM at The Links Golf Scramble for the last three years, Indiana Grand Casino has successfully increased the number of participants while doubling the funds raised each year the annual event has been held. Teams of Indiana Grand Casino employees and invited Casino guests competed in the event. A raffle after the scramble boosted the fundraising efforts, with all proceeds donated to the LAM Treatment Alliance, a 501 (c) (3) organization formed to fund and drive research to find a treatment or cure for LAM. Jim Mackie, Indiana Grand Casino’s Director of Customer & Business Development, began his fundraising efforts for LAM more than nine years ago. “I’ve been involved with the LAM Treatment Alliance for nearly a decade,” said Jim Mackie. “This is such an important cause. We’re thrilled to once again sponsor the annual LAM at the Links fundraising event. The dozens of teams, comprised of Casino players and Casino employees, not only showed genuine interest in this important cause by participating in this year’s scramble, but also by their commitment to help the cause in the future.” For more information on Indiana Grand Casino, call (877) 386-4463
