The Chicago Opera House began with the research of the extraordinary methods, novel effects, and remarkable applications of geometrical boolean operations. Applying this research to the design solution for the opera house creates a new opera house typology, one that exemplifies the ageless beauty of opera and engages the visitor in the performance. The deseign consists of four individual cones piercing through the object. Each of these booleaned cones acts as either an element meant to visually connect and engage the users, or significant program begins to inhabit these spaces. The entry sequence begins compressed and inside one of the booleans, and proceeds to progress into the foyer, whcih is open and light.

[ELNATHAN] KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE SPRING 2019 INSTRUCTOR: TRICIA STUTH DURATION: 11 WEEKS PROJECT PARTNERS: ASHLEY VEVERA AND SARAH WHEELER

Knoxville College has recently been revived as an online college. However, the desire for the college to completely revive itself as an inclass campus is evident. This studio focused on restoring one building on the campus, Elnathan Hall. Restoring the abandon dormitory in a historical black college campus involved highlighting the history of the building and college while incorporating contemporary needs and materials. Nostalgia was the concept for the project, which can broken down into time and memory. Time is represented through progression through the cultural center, reflecting back on old and new spaces. Memory is represented by materiality. Maintaining the original brickwork while adding contemporary materials, such as copper and different transparencies of glass.

1 | CULTURAL CENTER ADDITION: taking a similar footprint to the original annex. The addition takes on a contemporary addition, contrasting old and new materials and form.

2 | HOSTELS: located in the southwest existing portion of Elnathan, there are 8 hostels across all four floors, able to sleep 64 people to allow for temporary visits.

3 | CULTURAL CENTER/LOBBY: centralized in the existing building, the second half of the cultural center, as well as the entrances and lobby, inhabit the occupiable space, visually and materially connecting old and new.

4 | APARTMENTS: studio and one bedroom apartments are located on all four floors of the 1905 addition to Elnathan. The exterior maintains the original brickwork.

5 | APARTMENTS: multi-family, two-story apartments are located in the 2019 addition to Elnathan. A contrast of material is used on the exterior; copper. The copper will patina overtime and show aging, similar to the brick.

[FORTISSIMO] SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA AUTUMN 2017 INSTRUCTOR: KAY BEA JONES DURATION: 15 WEEKS

Fortissimo is a Music Hall located in Golden Gate Park. Fortissimo serves the purpose of a public space for the community and an educational space for performing arts and music students. Specific programmatic elements were to be incorporated within the project (main theater, chamber theater, black box theater, classrooms, practice rooms, and a cafe). Fortissimoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name developed from being the biggest (loudest) element on site; followed by a series of follies leading to Strawberry Hill. The interior follows two paths that intersect one another, featuring transparent moments on the interior of the building overlooking a central uninhabitable garden. The theaters lie on one path and the educational spaces are located on the other. The climax of each path contains a public gathering space that overlooks Golden Gate park, and each faces one of the two surrounding sites to see: The de Young Museum tower and Strawberry Hill.

Exhibit Columbus is a bianual exhibition located in Columbus, Indiana. Six colleges were invited to submit a pavilion design to Exhibit Columbus,. Filament tower is located nextx to Eero Saarinenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s North Christian Church. Filament Tower explores computational design and robotic fabrication of lightweight fiber composite structures for architectural applications. The project explores new methods of design and fabrication in order to incorporate the use of these performative materials in architectural design resulting in more material-efficient and sustainable construction practices for the future. The tower will stand at over 30 ft. tall and cover an area of 85 square feet. It will consist of 27 adaptively wound, multinodal glass and carbon fiber components, which serve as the foundation for the structure and seating for visitors.

ROBOT WINDING USES THE KUKA ROBOT AND 5 AXIS TURN TABLE TO ROTATE THE COMPONENT AROUND AND HOOK THE FIBERS VIA THE ROBOT ARM WITH A CUSTOM EFFECTOR. THE ROBOT AND TURN TABLES ALLOWS FOR A CURVED FORM WITHOUT A FRAME. THIS SYSTEM OPERATES BASED ON THE DESIGNER DICTATING POINTS IN SPACE THAT THE ROBOT WILL FOLLOW IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE SPECIFIC FIBER ORIENTATION DESIRED AND GENERATION THE INTENDED GEOMETRY. THE ROBOT OPERATES ON 6 DIFFERENT AXES THAT ALLOWS FOR THE END EFFECTOR TO REACH ANY DESIRED POINT LOCATION ON THE END NODES.

THE ORIENTATION TOOL WAS CUSTOM DESIGNED AND FABRICATED. IT WAS NECESSARY IN ORDER TO ALIGN AND LOCATE EACH NODE IN REGARDS TO THE PIPE AND THE OTHER NODES.

[REFLEX] KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE AUTUMN 2019 INSTRUCTOR: KYLE SCHUMANN AND KATIE MACDONALD DURATION: 10 WEEKS PROJECT PARTNERS: Rony Feghaly and Yeganeh Rahbari

Installed in Knoxville, TN at the University of Tennesseeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s architecture building, Reflex consists of experimenting with the physical properties of bamboo, striving to manipulate them into an innovative and adaptable structure using actuation methods and novel processes. Reflex transformed the static parts of bamboo into flexible parts and altered the assumed notion of a rigid structure to a modifiable and flexible structure using different cutting techniques and integrated technologies. The experimentation with different cutting techniques was necessary to reach different levels of flexibility or angles. Negative subtracting, slicing, and CNC milling are some of the techniques utilized to accomplish the design goals. However, flexibility itself is not enough. The integration of technology is key to creating dynamic movements. Incorporating servo motors triggered by motion detectors to create movement in the structure. Programming sensors and movement is a precise task in which bending angles need to be analyzed to work with the natural bending angles of bamboo and the actuated movement of Arduino.

[INSCRIBED] COLUMBUS, INDIANA SPRING 2017 INSTRUCTOR: MICHAEL BAUMBERGER DURATION: 10 WEEKS PRELIMINARY PROJECT: THE LANTERN GROUP: Chad Brathwaite, Jake Clare, Kody DeCosta, Abbey Latham, Jimmy Neff, Asya Shine, Ryan Terrell, Will Ulmer, Keegan Graham, Jackie Nehrbass, Caroline Proffit, and Renee Saavedra Exhibit Columbus is a bianual exhibition located in Columbus, Indiana. Six colleges were invited to submit a pavilion design to Exhibit Columbus, which were to be built between Columbus Signature Academy Lincoln Campus and the Central Middle School. The design was an 225sq. ft. open air pavilion and was to be seen as an outdoor learning center for the neighboring schools. The construction of the pavilion is intended to be somewhat exposed so that it can be used as a learning tool for the children attending these schools; this way they can have a better understanding of the variety of ways to design and fabricate a pavilion. INSCRIBED grew out of an exploration of scripted drawings that referenced procedural work from artists such as Sol Lewitt, Bridget Riley and Casey Reas. The resulting line work was then developed into a series of 3D printed panels that informed a structural framework. Cincinnati Incorporated generously provided expertise and equipment that were crucial to the project.

[EXTRAORDINARY METHODS] FABRICATION STUDY AUTUMN 2018 INSTRUCTOR: MAGED GUERGUIS DURATION: 4 WEEKS

Research of how boolean operations can have a novel effect on architecture. Boolean operations consist of boolean union, boolean split, and boolean difference. The research began by creating all there of these boolean operations manually using an object with a naturally undevelopable surface. Further investigation found fruit has naturally undevelopable surfaces along with an indivudual characteristic, i.e. a lemon has a bud along the bottom and stem at the top. After the manuel iterations were completed, the research moved digitally and the same process was done.

BOOLEAN UNION TO FIRST UNDERSTAND BOOLEAN UNION, THE IDEA OF TAKING TWO FAUX LEMONS AND INTERSECTION THEM AT A UNQUIE POINT WAS UTILIZED TO PHYSICALLY UNDERSTAND THIS BOOLEAN OPERATION. A LEMON WAS CHOSEN BASED ON THE DOUBLY CURVED AND THE UNIQUE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE BUD ON THE END OF THE LEMON.

BOOLEAN DIFFERENCE TO GRASP A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF BOOLEAN OPERATIONS, A HAND MADE FORM IS CREATED TO CREATE THE INSIDE FORM AND OUTSIDE MOLD. USING FAUX LEMONS, INTERSECTIONS AND JOINING THEM TOGETHER WAS DONE BY CUTTING THE LEMONS INTO HALVES, THIRDS, OR QUARTERS TO JOIN THEM AT THE MOST INTERESTING INTERSECTION POSSIBLE.

BOOLEAN SUBTRACTION FROM THE FORM MADE TO UNDERSTAND BOOLEAN DIFFERENCE, PLASTER WAS MADE AND POURED INTO THE CENTER IN ORDER TO CREATE AN OBJECT OF THE SUBTRACTIVE SPACE OF THE VOID. IN THE IMAGE TO THE RIGHT, ONE IS ABLE TO SEE THE CURVED FORMS MADE AND UNDERSTAND THE EXACT INTERSECTIONS OF THE LEMON WITH ONE ANOTHER.

[THE LANTERN] FABRICATION STUDY SPRING 2017 INSTRUCTOR: MICHAEL BAUMBERGER DURATION: 6 WEEKS Group: Jimmy Neff and Will Ulmer

The Lantern was a workshop that studied design through various fabrication techniques and software programs. The workshop primarily focused in on grasshopper and 3D printing. We were to utilize 3D printing in a way that no other material could fabricate. The Lantern focused on the depth and variation that one could get by 3D printing. Therefore, when shining a light through the print, there would be a grayscale of colors that were produced. We used an arduino board to produce a light on the interior, along with panels covered in mylar to add a reflective aesthetic to the interior.

[STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM] FRANCE, BELGIUM, NETHERLANDS, GERMANY, DENMARK, SWEDEN, FINLAND MAY 2016 INSTRUCTOR: JACKIE GARGUS DURATION: 5 WEEKS

The European Study Abroad Program focused on exploring a variety of countries across Western and Northern Europe, all while concentrating on different areas of architectural importance. The program explored cities throughout Europe and focused its attention on the roots and continued development of architecture. Students who went participated in: site visits of major monuments and towns, lectures by local experts, museum tours, sketching and analysis exercises and seminars on urban and architectural designs. The primary focus of the trip was to use sketching as a tool for analysis of the architecture, landscapes, and urban design of the spaces. Sketching allowed for the students to investigate these spaces on a deeper and more intellectual level. Prior to the departure was a research phase that was compiled into booklets to be taken on the trip as a second tool for understanding the spaces.

[WOMEN IN DESIGN] SYMPOSIUM SPRING 2017 AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS DURATION: 1 WEEK CO-ORGANIZAER & GRAPHICS: MICHAEL SCHWARTZ

Women in Design was a successful inaugural symposium held in March of 2017 hosted by The American Institute of Architecture Students at The Ohio State University. Taking the lead of the project was myself and co-organizer Michael Schwartz. We were able to bring in lecturers and panelists at the local, state, and national level. At the local level, we did a panel discussion. At the state level, 4 women had a presentation about their journies throughout their careers. At the national level, we brought President of NCARB Kristine Harding to give a presentation. We also previewed a screen filming Making Space, which had 4 women involved in the profession internationally who shared how their bumps in the road have led them to be a move involved designer and determined professional. With a turnout from students, faculty, and professionals, these events were able to showcase the experiences they have had and enlighten the public of the adversities women face in a predominately male profession.

Women in Design is a stimulating 3-day series of events that enlightened both students and professionals , men and women alike, of not only the adversities that women have overcome in the professional design disciplines, but also their successes and life journies. The week brings together speakers and panelists in local, state, and national practice drawn from Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Planning. The inaugural week varied in events from a local and state panel discussion, President of NCARB presentation, local presentation of faculty’s individual work, to showing the film screening ‘Making Space’.
