GREAT SERVICE AT TWO LOCATIONS By MEREDITH CREEK Contributing Writer

W

hen the doors opened to Holtfield Station in 2007, local residents were quick to step in and experience what the newest area one-stop store had to offer. For coowners John and Andrea Holt, it was another way to meet growing needs of Highland County residents. “We felt there was a need for this type of business on this side of (Hillsboro),” Andrea said. The Holts, who started Holtfield Station together with Mark and Dawn Edenfield, had already been active business people in the community. John purchased Ponderosa Steakhouse in 1991 and seven years ago designed a floor plan for the restaurant’s new building. The former building is now known as the Ponderosa Banquet Center and is used for luncheons, meetings, parties, and receptions catered by Andrea.

Holts:

GO WITH THE FLOW IN THE GARDEN The book “101 KidFriendly Plants” suggests a “Five Senses Container Garden” as a fun way for children to explore sight, smell, sound, taste and touch with plants.

This past week, my husband and I traveled to Iowa for the John Deere “Gathering of the Green.” We were treated to 80degree temperatures and scattered showers on our visit. Forsythia and Magnolias were in full bloom and farmers were working ground. On the way home we even saw someone planting! As we pulled in the drive, I have to admit that suddenly I felt overwhelmed by the tasks that needed attention. In the book, “Gardening for a Lifetime,” Sydney Eddison shares some important advice for any gardener. “Life is perfect only rarely and briefly, and gardens are the same. Living things are always in a state of becoming. A seed becomes a mature plant, which enjoys a brief prime, ages, dies, and becomes compost to nurture a new generation. As that is how nature works, our best hope of a simpler way to garden lies in learning to go with the flow.” I am anxious to get some

seeds in the ground and will get the cold frame ready for planting this week. I pulled out the left-over seeds from last year and will make a list of what needs to be purchased. My husband asked about growing some blueberries and my reply was, “Sure, if you build me a raised bed for them!” Out came my garden list, and now blueberries and the needed supplies to amend the soil have been added. My garden mantra this year is, “Go with the flow!” Do you have a young gardener in your family? Have you ever thought about planting a “FiveSenses Container Garden”? In the book, “101 KidFriendly Plants,” author Cindy Krezel suggests this fun way for children to explore sight, smell, sound, taste and touch with plants. The basic requirements include: (1) Potting mix (not garden soil), (2) Large container with good drainage, (3) Place plants with similar needs together. Krezel’s plant choices:

Basil (yummy), Cockscomb (funky on the fingers), Coleus (great colorful leaves), Lamb’s ear (as soft and furry as a lamb’s ear), Hen and chicks (great to touch and fun to watch), Ice plant (edible, fragrant, and great to touch), Lavender (delicious to smell), Lilac (possibly the best smell ever), Lilyturf (make some noise – hold a blade between your thumbs and use it as a reed), Mint (delicious), Nasturtium (fun to pinch off and nibble – spicy), Ornamental grasses (soothing sounds), Parsley (easy and yummy), Pussy willow (wonderfully soft), Sage (great smell), Stonecrop (really fun, succulent leaves and soft, furry flowers), and Thyme (walk on it for the smell, pick it for the taste). Include this fun activity for your small gardeners and let them enjoy caring for this container that will stimulate all their senses. Are you interested in flowers? On March 29, Pam Bennett, state Master

Gardener coordinator and Clark County OSUE Educator will present a program on “Top Performing, Low Maintenance Annuals” at the Fincastle campus of Southern State College. The workshop starts at 7 p.m. in room 110 and is free to the public. If you want to learn more about herbs, plan to attend a workshop being given at the Fayettville/Perry Library on March 28. This workshop starts at 6 p.m. and is free to the public. I am excited to report that we have our first meeting of the season with the gardeners at the Ohio Veterans Home at Georgetown this week. We will be helping amend the soil, till, plant, or complete any other jobs as needed. But most of all, we look forward to visiting with these Veteran Gardeners and renewing our gardening friendships. — submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSU Extension Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

LASER TOOTH-DECAY DETECTION While x-rays and probing instruments are important tools for identifying tooth decay, a laser that detects cavities can uncover even the smallest amounts of decay in the hardest-to-reach places. The DIAGNodent utilizes a laser-probe hand piece that emits pulsed light of a known wavelength on tooth surfaces. Once a baseline measurement of the patient’s healthy tooth surfaces is established, further examination of potentially problematic areas creates changing levels of fluorescent light, which the unit’s internal processor interprets. An audible signal warns of an indication of caries (tooth decay). The laser unit can also be used to keep track of early symptoms of tooth decay, which translates into earlier treatment and better tooth preservation.

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, MARCH 26, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Keira Knightley, 27; Kenny Chesney, 44; Martin Short, 62; Steven Tyler, 64. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Recall people from your past and reconnect with those you feel can contribute to what you want to accomplish this year. Someone will help you bring out your best attributes and work them into a plan or project that leads to your advancement. Trust in your abilities and move forward with confidence. Your numbers are 4, 6, 11, 22, 30, 37, 41. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Keep your thoughts private to avoid giving the wrong impression. More intentionality regarding your accomplishments and work ethic will lead to interesting developments and advancement. Strive for perfection and you'll acquire satisfaction. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Keep everything in perspective, especially partnerships. Contribute openly to your interests and you will meet people able to help you reach your goals. A business trip will bring gratification if you share your intentions and plans. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Collect old debts. Discuss plans to build your assets. Don't leave anything to chance, especially when it comes to money, home and family matters. A realistic assessment of your current situation will help you stick to a plan that is workable. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Spend more time with people who share your interests and concerns. Collaborating with people just as dedicated as you are will lead to success and advancement. Work in partnership, especially in fixing up your surroundings or environment. Love is highlighted. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Step back and assess before taking action. Overreacting or taking on more than you can handle will not bode well when dealing with personal responsibilities. Take time to nurture your relationships. A change of scenery will do you good. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Embrace whatever you face wholeheartedly. Your willpower and quality control will pay off. There is much to be learned and plenty to gain from any encounter. Challenges will allow you to show off. Love is in the stars. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Don't procrastinate when it comes to home or personal improvements. You have to set your goals and stick to your budget and plans if you want to avoid being criticized. Stick to quality over quantity; less will turn out to be the better choice. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Put love first. Nurture both personal and professional partnerships. How you treat others will determine your success. Consideration and moderation will be key when it comes to getting along with others. Use creativity and imagination to prosper. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Welcome change with positive reinforcement. Putting up a fight will lead to confusion and controversy. You will learn by watching how others handle adversity. If you need to use force to get your way, it probably isn't worth your while. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Put your heart into home, family and important relationships. The potential to make a good investment is apparent. Look at your assets and lia-

bilities and make positive and prosperous changes. Love is highlighted, and romance will enhance your life. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Relationships will be tested, and discipline will be required to avoid criticism. Be willing to make changes in order to keep the peace and you will win favors and support when needed. Compromise and patience will lead to victory.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Reassess your situation, friendships and partnerships before making a decision. Rely on experience to help you make the best choice. Embrace the love of your life, reconnect with someone special or search for someone new. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are unpredictable, hardworking and intent on reaching your life goals.
