By ANGELA SHEPHERD he Hillsboro Farmers Market, just two weeks in its new home in uptown Hillsboro, has been around for at least twenty years as far as organizers Margaret West and John Abell can recall. "We are tickled to death about the support we have had from the city," Abell said, thanking Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings for his part in getting the market moved to its new home. Abell and West said they have already received a lot of positive remarks about the new location from shoppers. The vendors flanking Governor Trimble Place every Wednesday and Angela Shepherd/The Times-Gazette Saturday offer a large selection of produce, fresh Pictured are shoppers and vendors at the opening day of the Hillsboro Uptown Farmer's Market at its new

CHICORY AND CHIGGERS

CHICORY PLANT My husband and I love to take long drives in the surrounding areas to check the crops. The soaring temperatures have certainly put stress on everything and we all are hoping for cooler weather and some rain. I continue to water my tomatoes, cucumbers and squash every other day. The plants in the perennial bed are looking very thirsty. I try not to look their way as I carry water to the petunias planted close by. We headed to Cowan Lake early this morning to Kayak among the lotus blooms for a few hours. As we approached the lake we noticed the familiar bloom of the Chicory plant lining both sides of the road. When I arrived home I headed to my favorite wildflower reference book, Wildflowers of Ohio, written by Stan Tekiela. My husband quickly commented, “Wildflower? Isn’t that a weed?” Tekiela’s information for Chicory (Cichorium intybus) includes: Family: Aster (Asteraccae) Height: 1-4 Feet Flower: Stalkless sky blue flowers, 11/4 inches wide, each with up to 20 petals (ray flowers); flowers sparsely populate a tall stem and close by early afternoon; petals (ray flower) are square-tipped and fringed; color ranges from white to pink, depending upon age and location Leaf: long, toothed basal leaves, 36 inches long, similar to dandelion leaves; stem leaves are oblong and much smaller, ½-1 inch long, lack teeth and clasp the stem Bloom: summer, fall Cycle/Origin: perennial, non-native Habitat: dry, sun, along roads, open fields Range: throughout

Also known as Blue Sailor or Ragged Sailor, its few flowers open one at a time and last only one day. This European import, believed to come from Eurasia, was brought to the United States to be cultivated for its long taproot, which can be roasted and ground as a coffee substitute or additive. Its edible leaves, like dandelion leaves, are high in vitamins and minerals, but taste quite bitter. Have you tried Chicory “coffee”? I have to admit that it is not at the top of my list to try again! I’m sure some of you are wondering how Chiggers fit into this story. When we unload our kayaks by the boat ramp, you have to walk in the grassy area by the lake. I am basically a chigger “magnet”! Ohio State University Extension’s Fact Sheet, HYG-2100-98, shares that there is probably no creature on earth that can cause as much torment for its size than the tiny chigger. Tiny six-legged chigger larvae attack campers, hikers, bird watchers, berry pickers, fisherman, picnickers, and homeowners in low, damp areas where vegetation is rank such as woodlands, berry patches, orchards, along lakes and streams, and even in driers places where vegetation is low such as lawns, golf courses, and parks. Contrary to popular belief, chiggers do not burrow into the skin. Instead, they stay on the surface of the skin and crawl to the base of a hair follicle to feed. Once settled, the larva injects the skin with digestive fluids using its piercing, sucking mouthparts (capitulum), and then they ingest the resulting “cell puree.” Some people are highly sensitive to the chigger’s feeding activity, and their skin will swell and surround the larva. This often kills the

chigger, and the dead larva found within the swollen skin gives rise to the misconception that chiggers burrow into the skin. Chiggers are usually associated with spring and early summer; however, they can undergo three generations per year in warm climates. To avoid being the victim of chiggers, avoid walking through brushy areas or wear long white pants with the socks pulled over the pant legs (quite the fashion statement, don’t you think?). Insect repellents such as DEET can help to ward off chiggers. Apply repellent to both the skin and clothing, especially to clothing openings at cuffs, neck, waistband and upper edges of socks. Follow all directions carefully. It takes several hours for the chiggers to settle, so bathing immediately after hiking in weedy areas can significantly reduce the number of bites. Calamine lotion and similar products will help to reduce itching and the risk for subsequent skin infections. Insecticides can be sprayed to control chiggers. For the best results, target areas where chiggers are most likely to converge, such as fence rows and garden edges where shrubbery is dense. OSUE Fact Sheet HYG-210098 gives several options for control that include: outdoor sprays of chlorpyrifos (Dursban), carbaryl (Sevin) or diazinon. Before using any pesticide, always read the label and follow directions and safety precautions. The bottom line for me and other chigger “magnets” is to be pro-active and use a repellent before you head out to enjoy the outdoors! — Submitted by Faye Mahaffey, OSUE Brown County Master Gardener Volunteer

Wife dresses sexy for work but not for wounded husband DEAR ABBY: I'm married to the love of my life. My wife is a beautiful woman, 50 years old, in great shape and she looks 35. My problem is whenever we go out, if I ask her to wear something sexy for me, she always says, "I'm too old to dress like that" and refuses. However, when she dresses for work, she spends hours on her appearance and dresses very sexy. I have told her it bothers me, but she says I'm being silly and she just wants to look good for her management job. She's constantly buying new outfits for work. This morning she left wearing a sexy short miniskirt and boots. She is an independent woman who does what she wants. I don't spend my time trying to control her by any means. I trust her and seriously doubt there's another man. But I feel this is a matter of her not respecting my feelings as her husband. Am I wrong? Is there something else going on here? My wife and I have had many good years together. We raised kids, lived through joyous good times and horrendous bad times. I am in my 18th month of chemo treatment for various cancers. I may live three months or five years. It doesn't matter how short or how long my life will be, but it's reasonable to assume that I will die before my wife does. I have had a more rewarding and fruitful life than I probably deserve, for which I am grateful. But the day I die, my last thoughts will be regret that I shall leave her alone. Medical Update Among the cosmetic dentistry procedures that provide restorative benefits are inlays and onlays made from porcelain or composite materials. Dental inlays are used to treat teeth with decay within their indented top surfaces. Onlays are used to treat decay or damage that extends to one or more tooth cusps. Both restorations usually require two appointments. One involves taking an impression and placement of a temporary inlay or onlay in or over the toolh. Once the inlay or onlay comes back from the lab, where the impression was used to create the restoration, it is cemented in place. Not only do inlays and onlays require less tooth reduction than a crown, they are durable enough to last up to three decades.

Enjoy our Amish meats, cheese, baked goods and other food items. Fresh baked pizza, calzones, pizza rolls, subs, fresh salads, soft ice cream, fountain coke as well as fries, onion rings and fried clams.

EUGENIA LAST the Last Word in

ASTROLOGY MONDAY, JULY 23, 2012 CELEBRITIES BORN ON THIS DAY: Daniel Radcliffe, 23; Marlon Wayans, 40; Philip Seymour Hoffman, 45; Woody Harrelson, 51. HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Learn from mistakes and take care of personal business before someone asks for something you've neglected to do. You will feel liberated and ready to try new endeavors if you don't have so much on your to-do list. Changes to your personal life can be expected. Accept the inevitable. Your numbers are 8, 17, 22, 24, 36, 45, 48. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Prepare for what's to come. Sitting at home and missing out on an event because you don't feel up to it will be your loss. Seize the moment and embrace whatever is being offered. Partnerships, progress and prosperity are all attainable. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You may have found a bargain, but before you make a purchase, do your research and check your motives. The vendor may be misleading you, or you may be trying to impress someone with what you have. Focus on work, not pleasures. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Opt to wait when it comes to altering your surroundings or updating your image. You aren't likely to love the results you get if you rush into something without doing enough research. Gullibility will leave you in a vulnerable position. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Spend time with family or your lover. Remembering the past will help you make wiser choices. Decisions should be based on what works for you personally, even if that means altering other aspects of your life. Don't defer; voice your opinion. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Everything will depend on what you do and how well you do it. Being a team player will allow you to win favors and support. Alterations at home will stabilize your personal life. Someone from your past will help you now. Love is highlighted. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Too much said and not enough done will lead to complaints. Emotions will be difficult to control. You are best to do whatever chores you have so you can move on to bigger and better opportunities. Time management will be essential to advance. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Now is your time to explore new avenues and make changes that will bring you one step closer to your dreams, hopes and wishes. Reunite with someone from your past who you feel has something to offer you now. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Don't be too quick to make changes at home that may be costly. Use common sense, or you may end up stuck with something that doesn't fit your lifestyle or your plans for the future. Good fortune comes from helping yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Listen carefully and size up a situation before you retaliate. It'll be best to let your actions be your voice. Take care of whatever responsibilities you've taken on before someone makes you look bad. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Don't make promises you cannot keep. Someone will try to coerce you into doing something that doesn't really suit your

skills. Contain your temper and don't vent your frustration on loved ones or anyone who can affect your future. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): This is a good day to sign contracts, formulate deals or move forward with a self-improvement project that will make your life better. Property deals or making a move will be beneficial. Romance will enhance your love life.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): A partnership may terminate if you don't compromise or at least listen to complaints. Weigh the pros and cons of your current situation to discover what you must abandon in order to do what suits you best. BIRTHDAY BABY: You are detailed, versatile and sophisticated. You have an entrepreneurial attitude.
