Dunwich Drifters concert raises nearly £300 for charity In aid of the RNLI and Dunwich Museum, the Dunwich Drifters put on a wonderful show on June 13th, raising almost £300.

The acoustics and atmosphere were perfect as the summer evening darkened and the stained glass shone.

With Gail's warm and engaging vocals, Holly and Nick on rhythm guitars, Tony on violin, Catherine on flute, Susie on mandolin and djembe drum, and Andrew on bass guitar, the group created a rich, multi-layered sound. Supported by Tom

and Leigh on sound, whose careful work enhanced the balance and clarity throughout the evening, the performance filled the church beautifully.

During an interlude, Caroline read from her Dunwich Voices, evoking Medieval Dunwich, the vast trading and shipbuilding port, once almost as large as London, that now lies beneath the sea-often referred to as 'Britain's Atlantis'.

"The Dunwich Drifters continue to be an enormous asset, helping to keep Dunwich's

musical tradition alive and thriving," says Caroline.

The Dunwich Drifters and Caroline Gay Way would like to extend their sincere thanks to St. Mary's Church for hosting the event and providing such a beautiful setting for the evening. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous night of music, friendship and community spirit, while raising valuable funds for the RNLI and Dunwich Museum.

They are grateful to all who attended and supported these worthy causes.

Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group

Presenting and preserving the past Talk by Janet Few

In a change to our previously advertised programme, the July meeting of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG) with be a talk by Janet Few entitled 'Presenting and preserving the past'.

As family historians, we're the current custodians of family memory. With each generation that passes, some of that information leaches away. We owe it to those who follow to halt that erosion and preserve as much as possible of our family heritage. Family anecdotes and memories, photographs and our own reminiscences are

part of that legacy, as well as the stories behind heirlooms and artefacts of family significance.

These may not be items of monetary worth but their value in our shared past can be incalculable. This talk doesn't focus on scientific preservation and conservation techniques but on the importance of being a custodian of memory, with a duty to hand that down, giving suggestions as to how that might be achieved.

Dr. Janet Few is a British historian, genealogist, and author specialising in 17th-century social history. Best known for her educational books, living history

interpretations as 'Mistress Agnes', and awardwinning historical fiction, she's the president of the Family History Federation.

The talk takes place on July 20th at 2:30pm, in person at the Fromus Centre in Saxmundham (behind the library) and, for members only, on Zoom. The speaker will be talking to us on Zoom. There's no need to book, just turn up, free for members and £5 for visitors, including tea/coffee/biscuits. Good, free car-parking. A heavily pregnant female has also come into foster care and is now awaiting the birth of her kittens. This is in addition to other litters already in care.

This is a timely reminder: If you have a young cat, please make sure it's neutered.

Whether male or female, speak to your vet about the right time to castrate or spay. Neutering is recommended at around 16 weeks of age and is the

most effective way to prevent accidental litters. Neutering doesn't just prevent unwanted litters; it also reduces roaming, curbs fighting, and helps keep cats safer and healthier overall.

Please help us reduce the number of unwanted kittens.

Creative Floral Designs 'Behind the Shed Door' Our demonstrator for this month was Crystal Dyball from Norfolk, and the theme for her arrangements was 'Behind the shed door'.

The explanation for the title was that Crystal had lots of flower containers dumped in her shed which she hadn't used for years, so she had decided to start using them again rather than leave them to deteriorate.

Her designs were beautiful, and she used lots of interesting

foliage. One tip she shared with members looking to use less floral foam was to make a grid across a vase using transparent tape. The grid, once formed, helped to hold the flowers in place.

During the tea break, members were able to buy plants and books from the sales table and also admire the arrangements of other members on the competition table.

Our next meeting will be held at Martlesham Village Hall on July 1st, starting at 2pm.

Both councillors have pledged to work hard, attend parish and town meetings and support local events whenever they can.

As summer arrives across our towns and villages, many of us will be looking forward to spending more time outdoors, enjoying local events, exploring our countryside, and making the most of the longer days.

One of the things I value most about Central Suffolk and North Ipswich is the strong sense of community that runs through both our villages and the town of Ipswich. Whether it is a village fete, a local sports club, a church event, a charity fundraiser, or simply neighbours lending a hand, there is a spirit of generosity and involvement that makes this part of Suffolk such a special place to live.

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy everything our area has to offer. From our beautiful countryside and green spaces to the many events organised by local groups and volunteers, there is always something happening.

It is also an important season for many local businesses, cafés, pubs and attractions that contribute so much to the character of our communities, so please do support them by shopping local wherever you can.

The warmer months can bring challenges as well, particularly during periods of very hot weather. One of the real strengths of our area is the way people look out for one another. A quick phone call, a knock on the door, or an offer to help with shopping can make a real difference to a friend, neighbour or family member who may need a little extra support.

Small acts of kindness often have a greater impact than we realise.

Summer can be some of the

busiest times on our rural roads, with walkers, cyclists, horse riders, visitors and agricultural vehicles all making use of them.

A little patience and consideration goes a long way in helping everyone travel safely and enjoy all that Suffolk has to offer.

Our parks, playgrounds, footpaths and public spaces are among the many reasons people choose to live, work and visit here.

They are enjoyed by residents of all ages throughout the year and are often maintained and enhanced through the efforts of local volunteers and community groups. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gives their time to local charities, churches, sports clubs and community organisations.

Much of their work happens behind the scenes, but it plays a vital role in bringing people together and strengthening our communities.

I hope everyone across Central Suffolk and North Ipswich has the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing and enjoyable summer, spending time with family, friends and neighbours while making the most of everything our beautiful part of Suffolk has to offer.

Unlocking the lives of Pauper Ancestors Chris Broom, Chairman of the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG), welcomed members and guests to our June talk at the Fromus Centre, Saxmundham.

Clare O'Grady Msc, QG, gave an excellent presentation to help us find out about Pauper Ancestors.

Poor relief in 1536 was the legal responsibility of each parish, and in 1597/8 parish householders had to pay a poor rate levy. Poor Law Unions were also created, so information could be found in their records and also those

of the parishes. The poor could claim relief because of illness, unemployment or old age, and their names were recorded in the vestry (church) minutes, in overseers' accounts, or in a poor book. Extra information was also recorded. Clare showed examples of these records that she had found. Outdoor Relief was given during the 17th and 18th centuries, consisting of money, food, clothing and other goods, allowing people to stay in their own homes.

The able-bodied worked on road maintenance, boundaries, ditches, etc. and women looked after the

sick.

People were only allowed to claim relief in their home parish, and to stop people moving around to claim in several parishes the 1601 Settlement Act came in so people had to be legally settled, and had to comply with certain conditions. Parish officials examined newcomers under oath and gave a certificate, copies of which may still be found in the records of larger parishes.

Settlement examination records can be found in Union records after 1834.

relief in workhouses was created with boards of guardians overseeing them. Entry into a workhouse was voluntary and the able-bodied were set to work.

The Overseer would seek to find them work outside the workhouse.

Records pre 1834 can be found in the parish chest. Incorrect behaviour saw the miscreants fed only bread and water back at the workhouse. Workhouses were inspected regularly. Paupers could leave the workhouse if they had housing and work to go to.

Poor children in a parish from the age of seven were often bound as apprentices to nearby farmers or tradesmen, the agreement being recorded in the Vestry minute books, Overseers accounts or parish registers. Licences for sailors and also vagrants were held in the parish chest. Vagrants were divided into "idle and disorderly", "Rogues and vagabonds" or "Incorrigible rogues", and information for these may also be found in JP records and Quarter Sessions records.

Clare showed us that there are several places to seek information to add to that found in the census.

Local history groups or museums may have information about workhouses in their area, and perhaps you might see an actual parish chest in a church, although the records may be held elsewhere.

East Suffolk Council

Working together to 'Protect our Hares' East Suffolk Council (ESC) is taking up the cause to help better protect one of the countryside's most iconic and graceful mammals.

As part of an ongoing conservation commitment and restoring nature for local communities, the council's backing efforts to preserve and improve brown hare welfare.

Once widespread, Britain's fastest wild mammal is now a Priority Species - listed for conservation following historic population decline, especially over the last hundred years, due in part to habitat loss, intensified farming practices and changes in patterns of land use.

Despite targets in place to halt abundance decline by 2030 and reverse the trend by 2042, brown hares also face the threat of being illegally hunted with dogs (often for the purpose of gambling) and remain the only species of game in the country without statutory

protection during breeding season.

ESC is, therefore, supporting the introduction of a 'closed season' to prohibit shooting during the months when hares are pregnant or raising young, to prevent the starvation of orphaned leverets.

Councillor Sally Noble (Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Environment) said: "People are astonished to hear that hares can be shot during breeding season, and leverets left to starve in the fields, despite their priority status under the UK Biodiversity Plan. A closed season would help numbers recover and prevent orphaning dependent young. Although a Bill was introduced to the House of Lords for a closed season in 2024, there has been no further progress. Anyone who feels strongly about this should write to their MP urging the Secretary of State to introduce a closed season. Biodiversity isn't just

about saving rare species, but ensuring common species remain so. Thankfully, brown hares are not a threatened species, but they do lack the same legal protections of other a game species and are a conservation concern."

Meanwhile, Cllr Noble has written to local farmers to support the creation of 'hare-friendly' habitats, including field margins or strips to provide food and shelter during winter.

"Not only would we like to see legal protection for hares during the breeding season, but we are also encouraging local farmers and landowners to enhance biodiversity through simple, achievable and impactful action," she added.

"It could mean setting aside an un-farmed spot with cover

available from hedgerows or woodland margins - or letting a plot grow wild with scrub and native plants. The presence of wild brown hares on your land can be an indicator of a healthy and well-balanced agricultural ecosystem, and their numbers could be boosted by improving and varying habitats to provide better availability of food and shelter. We understand the need for arable farmers to prioritise crops and mitigate potential damage - and that's why we want to work together to make space for nature. Financial support is available for farmers to deliver environmental benefits through Defra's Countryside Stewardship and Sustainable Farming Incentive schemes."

ESC will be continuing to

raise awareness around hare conservation in coming months with focus turning to the damaging impact of hare coursing at the end of summer, following harvest season, when fields are left open and reports of offences increase.

ESC's Our Direction 2028 strategic plan places 'Environmental Impact' as a core commitment - and the Council has a statutory duty to consider conservation of biodiversity when making decisions on planning applications.

The preparation of a new Local Plan for East Suffolk will also provide an opportunity to consider appropriate future planning policies for the protection and enhancement of the environment while planning for new development.

Memorial Day at the American Cemetery On May 25th, volunteers from Halesworth Airfield Museum travelled to the American Cemetery at Madingley, Cambridge to present wreaths in remembrance of the men of the 56th Fighter Group, 489th Bomb Group and 5th Emergency Rescue Squadron.

It was the hottest day of the year, but everyone managed to keep cool and felt honoured to take part in this annual ceremony.

We were especially proud when one of the speakers paid tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Leon R. Vance, Jr. who was a pilot in the 489th Bomb Group flying from Halesworth. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1946 for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. His name is on the Wall of the Missing at the American Cemetery with a gold star beside it.

making the beautiful wreaths.

Climate briefing film comes to Beccles

When not to claim Capital Allowances For tax purposes, the method of claiming asset depreciation is known as Capital Allowances (CAs).

These operate on a reducingpool-of-value basis using HMRCprescribed rates ranging from 3% to 100% depending on the asset (and tax year) involved. These allowances are then treated as deductions against your annual profits.

But must you claim them?

Somewhat counter intuitively, the answer is no - you are not forced to claim CAs each year and there are several reasons why you may choose to waive your entitlement - especially as you generally do not lose the unclaimed value (so you are able to continue claiming in a following year where you left off).

You may wish to waive CAs when: • Your profits are low enough to be covered by your personal allowances and your tax and/ or NIC liability is not affected whether you claim CAs or not; • You wish to increase the effectiveness of any averaging claim;

• Higher profits are needed for pension or mortgage purposes; • Claiming them might trigger an excessive Gift Aid donation charge; • Other loss relief (which may be lost if not claimed) can be used instead; or • There is a large Balancing Charge (where on disposal the relief you have had exceeds residual value) ahead upon a planned cessation.

A few points to consider when considering waiving your entitlement: • HMRC cannot force you to make a claim for CAs each year; • You need to do the maths; • You can choose to waive some or all of any capital allowances; • Consider the future; • You may end up waiving your entitlement to CAs at one rate to replace it in a later year with a lower rate (but ultimately you will still receive the same amount of allowance over the life of the asset - it is just the timing of when you receive the relief that you are adjusting); • Try to get the CA claim right first time as HMRC take a dim

There are many responses to loneliness, some are helpful whilst others may not serve us well in the long term. Turning to alcohol can be a natural response for some. It can be a way of temporarily numbing the pain.

In moderation, it offers relaxation and an occasional outlet for stress.

However, it's important to notice if it becomes a crutch that we need to lean on in order to function day to day and an avoidance strategy for facing our real emotions.

We all need something to lean on in life and there's no shame in that. Many find support and comfort in faith, friendship, a job or volunteering, interests and hobbies, music and artistic activities. Of course, we can never replace what our loved one brought to our life but finding the right coping strategies which are beneficial and not harmful, can be a way of filling the loneliness with connection, purpose and fulfilment. Here are some ideas: • Engage in regular physical exercise (walking out doors, gardening, join a gym, sports club or exercise class).

With the exceptional warm weather, we had a run on shorts, summer dresses, and outdoor games. Now, with the wet weather, anoraks and wet-weather gear are proving popular!

We still have plenty of stock across a wide range of items, which we rotate regularly. We've added a few extra opening hours now that summer's here, and we even opened on Bank Holiday Monday with the offer of coffee and cake while you shopped.

We're also looking at occasionally opening on Sundays to allow those who work to shop; these dates will be announced on social media.

On rare occasions, we do need to close early, we offer our sincere apologies when this happens, as sometimes volunteers aren't available.

Bungay Camera Club 'Panels' results The Bungay Camera Club hosted its annual 'Panels' competition at Broome Village Hall on May 27th.

The competition challenged members to submit three related images in a single panel or Triptych. All three categories (monochrome prints, colour prints, and projected digital images) attracted a strong entry list.

Judge Suzie Hancock, visiting the club for the first time, commented on the diversity of subject matter and high quality of entries that made her task difficult. Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) lifeguards will soon return to beaches in East Suffolk to offer a reassuring presence.

Between 10am and 6pm, the lifeguards will patrol daily across two designated beaches from May 23rd, with the service remaining in operation until September 6th.

The beaches in East Suffolk that will initially be monitored by RNLI lifeguards are Lowestoft South and Southwold North.

Then, from July 11th, a total of four beaches in East Suffolk will be included in the patrolled beach service as Lowestoft North and Southwold South also join the lifeguarding rota.

The lifeguarding team in the north and east have been working hard to complete vital training and are looking forward to returning to the beaches full time.

Ted Morgan (RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor) said: "After completing their preseason training, our lifeguards are ready and excited to return to the beach. This year marks 25 years of the RNLI lifeguard service, and we're encouraging everyone to swim between the

Shakespeare under the stars at Sutton Hoo

The scent of summer June and July are lovely months to be in the garden - and although there are still plenty of jobs to do, you can take time to sit back and smell the roses, as they will be in full bloom.

Fragrant gardens really come into their own at this time of year and the key to success is to balance the different elements of scents, shapes, foliage and flower colours.

For stronger-smelling plants, find a place away from the house or building that gets early evening sun. Jasmine is perfect for this as it has a sweet musky scent that grows stronger in the evening and makes sitting outside a joy. Roses are the crème de la crème of the scented flower bed and containers and can be planted in most places in the garden. Combining fragrances can produce an amazing mood enhancing outdoor space that also attracts wildlife such as bees and butterflies. For a tranquil haven, a mix of mild-scented flowers like lily-of-the-valley, lilac and rose

can be the perfect choice, whilst for a calming and relaxing feel you could plant some chamomile, scented geraniums and lavender as well.

A classic summer scented plant is the sweet pea - colourful and easy to grow in containers or in the ground. Sweet peas have different strengths of fragrance, but the super-scented ones tend to be creamy or have bluish tints, and their scents are distinctive sweet, citrus, musk or spice. Keep in mind that the scent of sweet peas is strongest on warm and sunny days and in newly opened flowers. They like to be in open sunny locations with supports put in place before planting. Make sure you guide the developing shoots in the right direction and tie them in if needed and if you pick flowers or deadhead frequently you will get them flowering through to about September.

If there's one job to be done this month it's to: Feed your plants! Feeding is an easy thing to forget to do and not all plants

benefit from being fed in the same way so tailoring your feeding to suit different plants will give the best results. Add controlled release plant food to the compost when planting new pots - which releases nutrients throughout the growing season. If you sprinkle rose food around the base of your rose bushes this month it will help promote a second flush of flowers. Dilute liquid tomato feed in a watering can and apply to damp compost - this will give you a bumper crop if given to vegetable plants in containers such as tomatoes and peppers.

For fruit and vegetable growers, now's the time to plant out the last of the tender crops, including tomatoes and courgettes. Make sure anything you plant out is watered and given support if needed. Continue sowing salad crops, such as beetroot, lettuce, pak choi and radish and there's still time to sow French and runner beans, peas, squash, sweetcorn, and outdoor cucumbers directly into prepared beds outside.

Making music fun in East Anglia Martlesham Brass Main Band will be performing in St. Margaret's Church in Ipswich on July 5th at 3:50pm, as part of Ipswich Music Day. There's another chance to hear the Main Band playing on July 19th at 2:30pm, as part of the 'Brass on the Grass' series of free concerts at the Arboretum in Christchurch Park, Ipswich.

Rain can't stop play Leiston Bowls Club update 2026 starts as usual: you polish your woods and the rains come. Suddenly it's cold, wet, and dark early, but we soon overcome these hurdles.

In the Saxmundham leagues, our first team is joint top, while Saxmundham 2 is in fourth place, just five points behind with a game in hand. In the Bob Wright league, we're currently at the bottom, but again, we have games in hand.

Over in the Woodbridge League (Division 1), we're joint second and only two points off

the top with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, in the Fynn 'B' section, we sit fifth with two games in hand.

On June 28th, we will be holding our 3-Wood Open Tournament (hoping the rain will be gone by then!), and September 3rd is our 3-Wood Pairs competition. Visitors are always welcome, with food and drinks available and a big draw. Raffle prizes are always welcome, too!

Flatford celebrates Constable's 250th birthday with summer of activities time. Tom and Phoebe will be working with local schools and community groups to develop the final immersive, multi-sensory installation which will be open at Flatford from August 24th-30th.

• Colchester & Ipswich Art Societies 'Draw-in': July 10th-13th. Join the Colchester and Ipswich Art Societies in the Granary for a 'Draw-In' with drop-in art activities and tuition for artist of all ages.

• Constable 250: Suffolk Archives on Tour: August 1st & 2nd. The Hold will visit Flatford with their Suffolk Archives on Tour exhibition.

This converted trailer and stall will have a Constable 250 theme, with a chance to discover more about Constable along with craft activities for children.

• Constable 250: The Hay Wain Open Air Theatre: August 28th: Join Packing Shed Theatre for a play inspired by The Hay Wain which imagines the story of the people in the painting and explores what their lives may have been like.

As well as the full programme of events, volunteers will be hosting guided tours on most days to learn more about the life and work of Constable.

The National Trust at Flatford is preparing for a busy summer as it celebrates the 250 years since the birth of John Constable, one of the England's most famous and much-loved landscape artists.

Born in nearby East Bergholt on 11th June 1776, John Constable's father, Golding Constable, owned the watermill at Flatford and John spent this youth exploring and sketching the local landscape. The charming hamlet was the inspiration for some of his most well-known paintings including 'The Hay Wain' and 'Flatford Mill'.

His paintings are of international significance and the scenes that inspired them are still recognisable at Flatford today. 250 years on from this birth, tens of thousands of visitors flock to Flatford from around world to see the views that inspired Constable's iconic landscapes.

This summer, the team Flatford are planning a host of events and activities to mark 250 years since the birth of this much-loved artist including: • Maintaining a Masterpiece Walk: June 19th, 10:30am-12:30pm. Dave Piper (National Trust Countryside Manager) will lead a walk throughout the landscape taking a closer look at how his team manages the famous Constable views.

• The Rivers & Skies Art Residency with Tom Hobden & Phoebe Stapleton: In collaboration with the Essex Cultural Diversity Project, artists Tom Hobden and Phoebe Stapleton celebrate Constable's 250th birthday with a community art project. The artists will darken the Granary and fill the building with light - projection-mapping clouds, maps, and Constable's paintings across the beams. A drop-in session will take place on July 19th, when visitors will be invited to become part of the artwork, picking up cameras and interactive tools to shape and respond to the visuals in real

The questionnaire gives residents the opportunity to share their views on how the Local Plan should shape future growth in the district and respond to key issues including design quality, transport, housing, tourism, town centres, and climate change. It also asks for views on how people and organisations would like to be consulted on the Local Plan during its preparation process.

Cllr Packard (East Suffolk's cabinet member for Planning & Costal Management) said: "The East Suffolk Local Plan is a vital masterplan that will set out how our area will grow and develop over the next 20 years. As we prepare to consult the public on the content of this important document, we want to ensure all residents, businesses and stakeholders are informed, engaged and able to have their say in future consultations, so we're inviting as many people as possible to take part in this questionnaire. Responses to it'll be invaluable in helping our team to shape the priorities of the Local Plan and to help them prepare for the next phase of the process."

Suffolk's local authorities have been working together on local plan preparation to support a consistent approach and effective cross-boundary working ahead of Local Government Reorganisation. Questionnaire responses must be received by 5pm on July 29th.
