Management at Leiston Film Theatre are urging panto-goers to buy their tickets before it's too late, as the venue makes final preparations, ahead of their next traditional family pantomime at the Leiston Film Theatre in January.
Mother Goose appears live on stage at the 111-year-old venue on Friday 9th, Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th January, with demand for tickets so high, that a fifth and final additional performance has now been scheduled for Sunday 11th January at 11am.
The extra show was added after the venue was inundated with requests for another performance, as eager panto fans couldn't secure enough tickets for the other daytime performances.
Film Theatre Manager and Pantomime Director, Wayne Burns, is thrilled in adding another show. "We're all truly thankful for the public's constant support each year and believe that, if they want more, we should give them more! I think this is one of the most fun packed, novel and possibly barmy
Pantomimes we've ever staged, with bucket loads of silliness and jokes - and not forgetting a tenfoot goose! Everyone cannot wait to bring our brilliant script to life and perform for such appreciative crowds" he said.
In this fun-packed panto, Mother Goose is behind with the rent and in danger of losing her farm. Thankfully, there's a twist of fate, when a magical goose that lays golden eggs arrives, turning their family fortunes upside down. But when the devious Demon Dark-Heart arrives, will Mother Goose be tempted to give up her wealth - and her gorgeous goose, in return for youth and beauty?
The Pantomime has been written by Wayne Burns and is being brought to the stage under his 'Team B Productions' title - a group of experienced am-dram performers, whose previous sell-out successes have included shows at Leiston Film Theatre and at the Spa Pavilion Theatre in Felixstowe.
Work is also underway on a brand-new comedy-drama, to be staged at Leiston Film Theatre
in September 2026. Inspired by the iconic sit-com, Hi-de-Hi and set in a Suffolk holiday camp in the 1980s, Mourning Campers follows the drama on stage and behind the scenes at Archer's Holiday Camp. Tickets are scheduled to be available from Monday 12th January 2026.
The Pantomime sees renowned Suffolk musician Tom Horton returning as the Musical Director and the energetic students from the Chloe Kinrade School of Dance will be making a welcome return to the stage, as part of the Pantomime egg-stravaganza!
Mother Goose will be appearing live at the Leiston Film Theatre on Friday 9th (7:30pm), Saturday 10th (3pm and 7:30pm) and Sunday 11th (11am and 3pm) January 2026. Limited tickets are still available, priced £18.95, £18.50 and £16.95.

Sizewell funding boost for Sax Community Fridge
An innovative project in Saxmundham set up to reduce food waste has received a major funding boost from the Sizewell C Community Fund which will cover its annual running costs and help finance further expansion.
Sax Community Fridge is one of numerous local groups to benefit from the tranche of new funding, after being awarded a £12,117 grant to fund its activities over the next three years. Now in its fourth year, the project collects surplus food that is safe to eat and would otherwise be binned. It relies on donations of fresh produce and bread from local supermarkets, retailers, bakeries and growers which is redistributed for free at two regular weekly drop-in sessions in the centre of Saxmundham.
It has recently moved to a new space - the Old Bank garden run by the local Art Station charity. Supported by the local church (Saxmundham, Kelsale and Carlton), the scheme relies on a band of more than 40 regular volunteers and typically receives around 160 visitors every week.
Marion Hedley Lewis (Founder and Lead Volunteer) said: "I'm absolutely delighted by this funding boost which will help us to expand and plan better for the future. We'll use some of it to create a new website which will be an up-to-date showcase of our activities and future plans, with information and guidance for both visitors and volunteers. We also look forward to helping to support more local food charities in the area so that no food goes to waste."

Mud runners raise £1,500 for Suffolk's wildlife
Popular singing project awarded £12.5k
A popular project which gives people the chance to connect with others to socialise and sing to boost their wellbeing has received a £12,535 grant from the Sizewell C Community Fund.
opportunities to make friends, reduce anxiety and recover from health challenges."
On
Six participants came from law firm at Birketts and were joined by three staff members from the Trust, forming a united front of nature lovers ready to tackle the course head-on.
Together, the group raised over £1,500, a remarkable achievement that translates into safeguarding more than six acres of nature reserve for an entire year - helping to protect Suffolk's precious wildlife and habitats for generations to come.
"Wow, it was muddy!" said Andy Wright (Facilities Manager at Suffolk Wildlife Trust). "Mud found its way into places you didn't think were possible. I was happy we did it for the Trust and managed to raise a few pennies along the way!"
Ben Staples, from Birketts commented: "We had great fun. Extremely wet, muddy, dirty, etc. but a really good laugh and I'm happy we were able to raise a good amount in the end."
Dan Payne (Wilder Communities Officer for the Trust) added "It was VERY muddy, but there were water obstacles toward the end that washed a good amount off! A worthy cause and fun to do."
The Whole Hog is known for its challenging course, combining physical endurance with plenty of fun - from crawling through tunnels to wading through water. The runners' determination and teamwork shone through, reflecting their shared commitment to protecting Suffolk's natural heritage.
Our Partnerships Manager, Julie Long, commented: "We've been thrilled at the number of people throwing themselves into challenges this year in support of nature. The Whole Hog team are a splendid example of amazing people, achieving amazing things, whilst having a brilliant time in nature. Thank you to everyone involved and to everyone who sponsored and supported them, and of course to our shirt sponsor Impress Ipswich."
A huge thank you to the Birketts team for their incredible effort and generosity. Every pound raised helps ensure that wild spaces across the county remain safe havens for wildlife and places of inspiration for people.
Cohere Arts has been awarded the money to deliver 30 'Tonicsinging for health' sessions at Leiston Library over the coming year.
The seated singing group gives older people and those with mobility or other challenges the chance to join a weekly session, make new friends and boost their wellbeing through song. The workshops are popular, with more than 20 residents regularly taking part in guided singing sessions before socialising with others over refreshments.
Dr. Amy Mallett (Artistic & Executive Director of Cohere Arts) said: "We're thrilled to receive this award, which will enable the return and continuation of our weekly 'Tonic - singing for health' workshops at Leiston Library. Offering a gentle, friendly way to experience the many health benefits of singing with others, the activity has been a hit with Leiston residents since it was piloted in January 2025. Framlingham in paint
The Framlingham History Society is pleased to announce the publication of a new book which covers a period of nearly 480 years. The inspiration for this work originates from an exquisite collection of paintings of the town by Leonard Squirrell,
RWS, RE, (1893-1979), often referred to as the "Grand Old Man of East Anglian painting".
The main patron of Squirrell was James Mason Martin, a wealthy solicitor who grew up in Framlingham, and commissioned him to produce many paintings of the town. His work starts in 1914 and extends through to 1974. Along with pictures of the castle, church and college, there are many rare views of the town and surrounding area. Travelling back in time we have a 1539 painting of the 3rd Duke of Norfolk who started the rebuilding of the chancel of St. Michael's Church for the Howard tombs. Also, there's a 1544 painting of Princess Mary who was proclaimed Queen of England while at Framlingham Castle. There are other historic paintings such as that of Sir Henry Thompson by Sir John Everett Millais. Thompson was our most illustrious son from the 19th century. Leaping forward to 2016, we have an oil
painting of Ed Sheeran, who put Framlingham on the map with his epic song Castle on the Hill.
There are also many paintings, drawings and etchings, some dating back to the 1730s, that allow us to see views of Framlingham before the time when photography became commonplace. Some of these are by Henry Thompson in the 1840s, long before he became nationally known as a surgeon to royalty.
John Western (1948-1993) lived near Framlingham and produced many pictures of the town. Originally, best known for his drawings, he went on to produce excellent watercolours.
This limited edition hard-back book which has over 120 pages
and is 250mm wide by 210mm high, and includes work by over 40 artists. It will undoubtably become a collectors' item. The book was launched early November. The price is £20, cash preferred. If you require copies to be posted, or more general information, please contact: framww2@gmail.com for details of postage and payment. The book will be available after the launch from: Framlingham Bookshop, 19 Market Hill, (01728 723046); Art & Frame Shop, 15-17 Well Close Square, (01728 723404); Framlingham Post Office, 8 Riverside, (01728 723420); DC Patrick Newsagents, 4 Market Hill, (01728 724414).

Festive family favourite returns to Snape Maltings
A festive treat for the whole family is promised at Snape Maltings Concert Hall this December when the Co-op Juniors Theatre Company returns with a new production,
Magic of Christmas, directed by Suffolk sisters Harriet and Ellena Bacon.
Both are graduates in professional musical theatre and have performed across the
UK in pantomime and other productions. They have also choreographed many musicals with the Co-op Juniors.
Explains Ellena, "When we were offered the opportunity to direct Magic of Christmas in an iconic venue like Snape Maltings, we leapt at the chance. It's a huge show with almost 100 performers and a real sense of festive excitement and magic."
Harriet agrees, "We're used to working together as choreographers, so stepping up as directors with our professional theatre experience is an exciting prospect. The sheer range of music and dance style creates opportunities for all our young performers to shine."
Stage magic plays its part too, with comical penguins, high-kicking reindeer, playful Santa's, high-energy dance and lots of surprises. A moving nativity scene, re-imagined by artistic director Oliver Brett, is a unique celebration of the meaning of Christmas.
With stunning projections on a soaring stage set and almost 1,000 costumes, the Co-op Juniors have reinvented their traditional Christmas production. Musical director Nicholas Sheehan and arranger Emily Bennett have worked with the directors to create a tapestry of musical styles, with traditional Christmas themes woven in with modern numbers.
"It's a family show. so we wanted to offer something for everyone," says Nicholas Sheehan. "We've tried to create that special Christmas spirit in the concert hall, so people leave full of a sense of festive celebration before the special day."
Adds Harriet Bacon, "It's been a journey of discovery and our cast are so committed and energised to return to Snape with a new production. We can't wait for people to see it!" Magic of Christmas is twice daily on December 5th, 7th, 12th, 13th & 14th, with tickets from just £15. Book at brittenpearsarts.org or call 01728 687110.

Accounting software made simple
How to choose the right accounting software for your business.
Choosing the right accounting software can seem daunting. With so many options available, it's important to find a solution that fits your size, sector, and needs. Here's how to make a smart, informed choice.
Assess your business needs
Start by identifying what you need from your software.
Are you a sole trader looking for basic invoicing and expense tracking? Or a growing Limited company needing payroll, VAT management, and multi-user access? Make a list of must-have features versus nice-to-haves.
Consider ease of use
Accounting software should simplify your life - not complicate it. Look for intuitive interfaces, clear dashboards, and helpful tutorials. If you or your team are not tech-savvy, prioritise userfriendly platforms.
Check for integration and accessibility
Modern businesses rely on multiple tools, your accounting software should integrate with your banking system.
Opting for a cloud-based solution offers the added benefit of accessing the information from anywhere, perfect for business owners who are frequently on the move, or for remote workers.
Scalability matters
Think ahead. Will the software grow with your business? Some platforms offer tiered pricing and features that expand as your needs evolve. Avoid outgrowing your system too quickly by choosing one that supports future growth.
Security
Your financial data is sensitive.
Ensure the software includes strong encryption and data protection measures. Look for

Free memberships launched to boost local tourism businesses
The Suffolk Coast DMO has launched a brand-new inclusive membership tier (including a free option) designed to support tourism and hospitality businesses across East Suffolk during the current challenging times.
Tourism is one of East Suffolk's most vital sectors, contributing millions to the local economy and sustaining thousands of jobs each year.
Yet rising costs, shifting visitor habits, and growing competition have left many small businesses struggling to keep pace.
To help, The Suffolk Coast has introduced a free membership tier, giving businesses of all sizes the chance to tap into the region's leading destination network. Members gain access to exclusive support, resources, and promotional opportunities through thesuffolkcoast.co.uk, a website attracting nearly onemillion visitors each year seeking inspiration for where to stay, eat, and explore along the Suffolk coast.
"We know how challenging it is for local businesses right
providers with a strong reputation for security and regular updates. Compliance with Making Tax Digital (MTD)
Starting April 2026, selfemployed individuals and landlords with income over £50,000 annually (income is defined as gross self-employment income plus gross rental income before expenses as shown on your tax return for the year ended 5th April 2025) will need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. Choosing accounting software that is MTD compliant is important.
Budget wisely Free or low-cost options may be tempting, but they often lack essential features. Compare pricing plans carefully and factor in hidden costs like add-ons or support fees. A slightly higher monthly fee could save you hours of admin and costly errors.
Get professional advice Still unsure? Speak to your accountant. They can recommend software that aligns with your business goals and day-to-day operations as well as training to get you into good habits from day one.

Cyclists brave storms for Suffolk adventure
After a fair old wind and some torrential downpours, the intrepid Sunday cyclists who ventured out for the Bike Active event were rewarded with almost perfect conditions for their energetic efforts through the depths of the Suffolk countryside.
Whilst the Rotary club of Woodbridge organised and marshalled this very popular event, the ladies of Inner Wheel delighted in providing liquid and culinary refreshments for these noble riders who presented themselves with big smiles of eager anticipation before the event and exhilaration and satisfaction at the end, ready for a hot sausage
roll and piece of something chocolatey.
At the November meeting, members were intrigued to learn a brief history of the Citizen's Advice Bureau which started by opening the first 200 bureaux in 1939 just four days after war was declared and was invaluable in advising families about everything from how to trace missing servicemen to how to manage financially.
1974 saw the first office open in Tower Street where it remains to this day. Nicky Willshire, the current CEO for Ipswich Citizens Advice, informed members of how diverse the service is, giving free, impartial, confidential and trustworthy advice on any issue
from help with the filling in of lengthy and confusing forms to how to hire a beach hut. There is a staggeringly huge demand for this help and advice and Nicky is striving to link more services together and forge new partnerships with relevant bodies to ensure that this invaluable service will continue to meet the ever-increasing needs. Members are looking forward to the 'Orange the World' campaign walk from the Longshed to Notcutts for refreshments and fun, wearing as much orange possible! Orange the world is a global initiative aiming to raise awareness and take action against violence towards women and girls.
Many thanks to Sizewell C Community Fund for the grant of £26,768.00. This money will pay for new fencing surrounding the playground and replacing two picnic tables plus safety surface for several items of play equipment. This work will be carried out in the next few months.
In the New Year, we'll be looking for volunteers to help clear growth around the old fencing and cutting back low branches (dates will be confirmed in next month's news).
This is a chance for our Adventure Playground to raise much needed funds for the upkeep of the playground. We will have our popular tombola stall (in the High Street), plus some fantastic craft items for sale. All made locally by Pam McIntyre and Kay Bott (we'll also have a stall in Fishers, Market Place) where Pam and Kay's Craft Items will be on sale. The money raised will go towards maintenance and any new equipment needed on the playground.
Christmas at Darsham
The festive season has officially begun, as 'Christmas at Darsham' opens its gates this Friday, transforming the former Darsham Nurseries site into a charming pop-up Christmas experience for all the family.
Visitors can expect a cosy, traditional celebration filled with festive cheer, from handpicked Christmas trees and a beautiful Christmas shop to hot food including hotdogs, burgers, and fries, along with drinks and sweet treats such as freshly made donuts.
Located on the old Darsham Nurseries site, the event promises festive charm, delicious food, family fun, and a warm Suffolk welcome - the perfect way to start the holiday season.
The event has been created in collaboration with Stocks Funfair, bringing festive sparkle and family fun to Darsham.
Children can meet Father Christmas every Saturday and Sunday, when he'll be welcoming visitors to his grotto. Visits cost £13 per child, which includes a special Christmas gift and a ride on the Christmas train - no booking needed. "We wanted to create something truly special for the local community - a place where families can come together, find their tree, meet Santa, and enjoy some festive fun", said an organiser of Christmas at Darsham. The pop-up attraction will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with latenight openings on Fridays and Saturdays.
January often feels a bit of a downer after the excitement and brightness of Christmas, so why not lift your spirits and let Suffolk Singers entertain you in a fun, joyful concert on January 17th, 2026 at 7:30pm in Woodbridge Community Hall?
Our programme will include contributions from the West Tones, a delightful ensemble of singers from Woodbridge School.
Since the choir's early beginning in 1991 as a handful of singers assembled by the late Andrew Piersenné, Suffolk Singers has been committed to supporting many causes and has donated many thousands of pounds to charity over the years. Now a well-loved, mixed SATB choir of over 30 singers, directed by the talented Claire Weston, Suffolk Singers truly gets pleasure from singing and making a beautiful sound.
Within our yearly programme of concerts, the choir regularly stages a New Year's concert in aid of charity. Our chosen charity since 2019 has been FIND (Families in Need), a local organisation established in 1990 by Maureen Reynel, MBE.
Remarkably, our choir history shows that the choir donated the proceeds of a concert in 1997 to FIND, at a time when neither
the choir nor Maureen's charity were widely recognised. As both choir and FIND have grown and become well recognised, Suffolk Singers are proud to have forged a strong association with FIND. This charity does amazing work in helping those that are deprived of a minimum standard of living, whether they are single, families, lone parents, children, elderly, sick, disabled or homeless. They offer free of charge food, household items, furniture, nursery equipment and nappies, beds and bedding and, when available, electrical goods. When appropriate, this includes personal support too. Our concert in aid of FIND is always sold out, so we strongly advise purchase or reservation of tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. In supporting this convivial concert, you'll combine a memorable evening of great music delivered by Suffolk Singers, with the satisfaction of knowing that your ticket purchase is supporting a very valuable charity.
Tickets are £20 including supper (but please bring your own drinks), and are available from choir members, by calling 07843 840876 or at: wegottickets.com/event/678145 • suffolksingers.com • findipswich.org.uk

Aldeburgh Boxing Day Swim & New Year's Eve 5k Fun Run
If you're in or near Aldeburgh on Boxing Day or New Year's Eve, why don't you embrace the chill and thrill of the Aldeburgh Boxing Day Charity Swim, or sprout sprint and saunter into 2026 with our New Year's Eve 5k Charity Fun Run?
Aldeburgh Boxing Day
Charity Swim 2025
The festive spirit is set to make a frosty splash as the swim celebrates its 37th anniversary this year. The brave and the bold will once again gather on Aldeburgh beach to take a bracing dip in the North Sea to raise vital funds for charity. The swim will take place at 11am on December 26th on the beach opposite Aldeburgh Moot Hall.
Originating in 1988 when local GP, Dr. Kevork Hopayian organised the first swim to support the victims of the Armenian earthquake, the event has since become a cherished local tradition, raising thousands of pounds for good causes. This year's beneficiaries are two remarkable medical charities: East Anglia's Children's Hospice (EACH) and Médecins Sans Frontières.
Swimmers are invited to embrace the chilly challenge, though they should only be in the water for a maximum of 60 seconds. This is an event for confident swimmers with no pre-existing medical conditions that would make cold water swimming unsafe. Participants are asked to arrive by 10:45am for the 11am start time.
Online entry at EntryCentral
is essential and can be completed via the official event page at: entrycentral. com/boxingdayswim. A nonrefundable £10 donation's required from each swimmer to cover essential costs such as insurance and medical support.
Following the invigorating dip, the nearby White Lion Hotel is generously offering a warm respite with hot chocolate and mince pies for all swimmers.
Spectators are warmly welcomed and encouraged to cheer on the swimmers, adding to the day's fun and excitement.
Collection buckets and SumUp card readers will be on the beach for cash or card donations, or contributions can be made online via the Aldeburgh Boxing Day Swim page on the JustGiving website.
It's the perfect opportunity to either "dip in or chip in" and support these worthy causes.

New Year's Eve Sprout Sprint & Saunter 5k Fun Run
A more recent Aldeburgh festive tradition is the New Year's Eve Sprout Sprint and Saunter, a 5k off road charity fun run with optional fancy dress along the coastal path between Aldeburgh and Thorpeness. Participants are invited to shake off the impending festive food coma and embrace the last hours of 2025 with a final burst of fitness.
The event, which warmly welcomes runners, joggers, walkers, and saunterers of all ages and abilities, will kick off at 10am on December 31st on the north
side of the Aldeburgh Moot Hall.
Fancy dress is entirely optional but encouraged, with participants urged to don their most creative costumes (think giant Brussels sprouts, sparkling superhero capes, or festive elves) to add a splash of colour and cheer to the Suffolk coastline.
"We wanted to create a fun, healthy and community-focused event for New Year's Eve that everyone can enjoy," said event organiser Rob Mabey. "Whether you're aiming for a personal best or simply want to stroll and socialise in fancy dress, the Sprout Sprint & Saunter is the perfect way to wrap up the year while raising vital funds for Aldeburgh United Charities. Why vital? Because Aldeburgh United Charities is the only local charity focussed on the relief of poverty and funds collected will go towards the charity's mobile food pantry."
Online entry at EntryCentral is now open. There's a £10 entry fee. Join the community in this festive dash and saunter to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new one with energy, laughter, and goodwill.
Your organisers:
Both the Boxing Day Swim and the Sprout Sprint & Saunter are organised by Heritage Coast Events, a community interest company which organises local sporting events including the Aldeburgh Triathlon and the Heritage Coast Run. All the directors are local and volunteers. All surplus funds are donated to charity.

How to make your own Christmas wreath
There's something wonderfully rewarding about creating your own festive wreath. From the scent of fresh foliage to the satisfaction of hanging it on your front door. Here's how to craft your own festive masterpiece:
1. Start with your base: On a wire frame, begin by adding moss to the frame with binding wire. A mossed base will help your foliage stay fresh longer.
2. Prepare your foliage: Gather a mix of evergreens (such as spruce, conifer, eucalyptus). Trim stems to manageable lengths (around 10cm-15cm) and group into small bunches.
3. Build your wreath: Attach each bunch to the frame using binding wire or twine, overlapping slightly to create a full, even circle. Continue until the frame is covered.
4. Add your decorations: Bring
your wreath to life using pinecones, berries, dried fruits, cinnamon sticks, or ribbons. Use green stub wire or glue to secure each element.
5. Finish and display: Give your wreath a final spritz of water to keep it fresh and hang proudly on your front door or above the fireplace.

7th annual Ruff Stuff Cycle Event
Hot on the heels of Opera for Woodbridge came the Annual Ruff Stuff cycle ride, organised once again by Woodbridge Rotary Club.
With permission of the Foresty Commission, over 160 cyclists took to the roads of Suffolk starting and concluding at Butley Village Hall on October 26th. A leisurely ride for some and a little more energetic for others, along the highways and byways through the local forests and heaths.
This event raised funds for the Air Ambulance, Bike Active and other charities supported by Woodbridge Rotary. Over £1,900 was raised (gross) so a handsome sum is to be donated as soon as expenses have been paid.
The youngest rider was sevenyears-old accompanied by his father along the 10 mile route. Those who took the 25 or 30 mile route were of all age groups but we have no intention of further mention of their ages!
On the participants return, they all enjoyed cake, rolls and drinks supplied by the ladies of Woodbridge Inner Wheel, who were also pleased with the results of their labours.
Our next event will be the 76th annual Open Air Carol Service, to be held on December 17th
on Market Hill. A free-to-attend event with a voluntary collection, once again supporting charities. Normally, the headline charity is one which supports children in their hour of need, so please come with what you can afford to donate.
The service commences at 6:30pm but from about 6pm, you'll be entertained by a member of 'Midnight Road' (a local band), so do come early to give your support and get ready for the festive season.
After the service, we'll have a special guest arrive, all the way from Lapland, giving sweets out to all the children. Yes, you guessed correctly... Father Christmas will be making an early visit to Woodbridge!
After a short break, our next event will be our very first Pop Quiz at Woodbridge Town Football Club on March 20th. The Quiz Master will be Lee Thompson, the man who sets the questions for 'Ten To The Top' with Vernon Kaye on BBC Radio 2. This event will be held in support of The Teenage Cancer Trust. A quiz not to be missed!

Cheque presentation from Aldeburgh Carnival Committee
Following another triumphant carnival for so many to enjoy, the people of Aldeburgh and surrounding towns and villages have given generously once again.
The Aldeburgh Carnival committee recently met to allocate funds to very deserving charities and we are delighted to communicate our deserving causes.
We recently met at the gorgeous and historic Moot Hall to present the cheques to a
representative from each charity.
For this year in total, we have donated £10,000 to charities as a result of the success of the 2025 carnival.
On behalf of our Carnival
Director Sally Watts and her carnival committee, our sincere thank you to all of the people who make our carnival such a wonderful success; there are too many to mention here, but we could not do what we do without this support.
The selected charities
for donations this year are: Aldeburgh Primary School, RNLI, Suffolk Accident Rescue Service, Aldeburgh United Charities, Alde & Blyth Community Radio, Coastal Accessible Transport, Aldeburgh & District Flower Club, Air Training Corps 1379 Squadron Leiston, Aldeburgh Parish Church, Aldeburgh Rugby Club, Eastern Community Assistance Team, Aldeburgh Baptist Church and Aldeburgh Photography Group.
Time out for your garden this December
December is the time of year when the outside comes into the home in the form of foliage decoration and when gardeners can put their feet up, just for a few minutes.
Natural living decorations and table centrepieces are easy and eco-friendly to create, and are often something all the family has a hand in putting together. Try this for a naturally stunning centrepiece for the Christmas table. Get a good terracotta container, fill it with compost and plant winter cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum) in the centre (a waxy leaved plant with amazing cherry tomato-like berries) then place a few small poinsettias around it with some ivy.
Ivy is a really useful plant and can look stunning in the garden, even at this time of year.
English ivy (Hedera helix) is a native evergreen plant, so is well-adapted to our climate and can grow virtually anywhere, in a variety of soils or sunlight levels - even in the deepest of
shade. Ivy flowers in late summer, producing pollen and nectar late in the season, and its flowering clusters form small black berries, providing food for thrushes, blackbirds and blackcaps in autumn and early winter. Its dense foliage and network of stems also provide shelter for insects and small mammals, with many birds and bats nesting in mature ivy plants. It's is a fast-growing and vigorous plant but can be kept under control by pruning back the stems with secateurs and digging up sections of ground cover ivy if it strays into areas of the garden it's not wanted.
Another plant that can keep growing over the winter months in sage - it will survive outside as long as its roots don't become water logged. Common sage (Salvia officianalis) is the standard culinary sage with aromatic, downy, olive-green leaves but there are numerous varieties to choose from including the widely grown purple sage with its attractive, dusky purple,
year-round foliage. Sage has a robust, peppery flavour and can be used in many dishes as well as a herbal tea. It's said to have many health benefits, and its botanical name Salvia is from the Latin salvare meaning to heal. In addition to decorating your home with winter foliage for the festive season, top tips from the RHS for December jobs in the garden include:
• Check winter plant protection is still in place.
• Insulate outdoor taps.
• Protect ponds from freezing over .
• Prune apple and pear trees.
• Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas.
