Hitchin is a beautiful market town with so much to offer. Incredible history, an amazing shopping experience with an abundance of independent stores, a fantastic food and drink scene and entertainment, art and culture for all.

St. Mary’s Church

Fortune has been kind and Hitchin has been able to develop and expand without seeing too much of its past destroyed.

It’s narrow streets and courtyards are still very attractive and houses, many of them half timbered, of past centuries are still a feature of the town. Of special interest are one of Hertfordshire’s finest medieval churches, several notable coaching inns, Hitchin Priory and The British Schools Museum.

Hitchin, in short, is ideally situated as a place of residence, modern yet with the background of an established country town.

Visit Hitchin is a Business Improvement District (BID) that works tirelessly with the Hitchin’s 600+ business owners and managers to create investment and attract visitors to the town.

Visit Hitchin’s goal is for visitors to the town to stay longer, spend more money and return more frequently. Through this, the aim is to maintain the town centre as a clean, safe, vibrant and well promoted environment for the public to enjoy and businesses to prosper.

Hitchin is easily reached from all parts of the country with roads radiating to Stevenage, and London, to Bedford, to Cambridge and to Luton. Excellent train services put Hitchin within a 30-minute journey of London, with many longdistance expresses reaching across the United Kingdom.

History of Hitchin...

The Gatehouse

Hitchin may be known today for its lively market, independent shops and attractive town centre, but its story stretches back thousands of years.

Archaeological finds, nearby Roman remains and the ancient Icknield Way all suggest that people have been living in and around the area for many millennia.

By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, Hitchin was recorded as a possession of the Crown. The town has maintained strong royal connections over the centuries, although it famously sided with Parliament during the English Civil War.

The town’s recorded history begins with the Hicce tribe, mentioned in the Tribal Hidage, a document dating from as early as the 7th Century. The tribe gave its name to both the town and the River Hiz, helping to shape Hitchin’s identity long before it became the bustling market town we know today.

Perhaps the most important feature in Hitchin’s history is the market. Unlike many English markets, Hitchin Market has no royal charter. Historians believe this means it may have existed before monarchs began issuing charters to regulate trade, making it one of the oldest markets in the country. The market helped establish Hitchin as the commercial heart of the surrounding countryside and remains a key part of town life today.

A major milestone came in AD 792, when King Offa of Mercia founded a religious house on the site now occupied

by St. Mary’s Church. The church remains one of Hitchin’s most recognisable landmarks and a reminder of the town’s deep medieval roots.

Today, Hitchin successfully blends its rich heritage with modern life. Medieval streets sit alongside vibrant cafés, shops and restaurants, while historic buildings provide a constant reminder of the town’s remarkable past. From its origins as a Saxon settlement to its growth as a thriving market town, Hitchin has evolved over centuries without losing the character that makes it such a special place.

For centuries, Hitchin’s economy was largely based on farming and agriculture.

The wool trade, in particular, brought prosperity to the town, while local businesses also benefited from related industries and trade with neighbouring communities.

The Victorian era brought another period of transformation. In 1850, the arrival of the Great Northern Railway connected Hitchin more closely with London and the rest of the country. Trade increased, new opportunities emerged and the population grew rapidly, rising from around 6,000 in the 1840s to more than 12,000 by the outbreak of WWI. Education has also played an important role in the town’s development. Hitchin has made a significant contribution to the history of education and has been home to a number of influential and notable residents over the years.

Hitchin Christmas Tree Light Switch On 14/11/26 Get ready to kick off the festive season in style with lots planned by Visit Hitchin.

There’s a full day of excitement for everyone! Live performances from local artists will begin at 11:30am, filling the streets with festive tunes and cheer.

Hitchin Festival 2027 26/06/27 - 31/07/27 Hitchin Festival is back, and as usual, there’s a wonderful published programme with details of all events running during that time and a box office selling tickets.

It's a great way of celebrating all that goes on across the community and a great way to promote your club/society and events.

Don't miss Santa’s Parade at 5:30pm, as the big man himself makes his way through town, spreading Christmas joy! Raising money for Hitchin Tilehouse Rotary, the parade will start at Bancroft Recreation Ground at 5:30pm and end in the Market Square, ready for the light switch on at 6pm. Food and drink stalls will be open all day, serving delicious festive treats and drinks to keep you warm and merry. To top it all off, The New Town Centres will take the stage to perform after the big switch-on! Bring your family, friends, and festive spirit, and let’s celebrate the start of the Christmas season together in Hitchin!

Hitchin Festival was established in July 1991 as a one week programme of events. Since then, it’s grown into a month-long celebration of the culture and entertainment on offer in Hitchin.

Each year, the festival promotes a huge variety of events including poetry, art exhibitions, concerts, theatre and kids entertainment. Since 2024, the festival is run by Community Interest Company - Hitchin Creative. The Visit Hitchin team have again helped with this year’s programme and you’ll find us assisting at many of the events.

For those who wish to explore Hitchin in more detail, you’re in luck! The Visit Hitchin shop stocks a Brief Guide to Historic Hitchin. This guide introduces you to aspects of the town’s past and its attractive streetscapes. If you walk the whole trail, it’ll take you about 90 minutes.

Otherwise, you can pick and choose as you like. Here’s just a few fascinating stops on that trail...

Town Trail...

The Coopers’ Arms building started as a high-status house around 1500; note the surviving Gothic window tracery. There’s been a public house here since at least 1860.

St. Mary’s Church is the largest parish church in Hertfordshire, dating from at least 792. The original dedication to St. Andrew points to early Saxon origins. The present building was begun in the 12th century. Embellished with wealth from the wool trade, St. Mary’s embodies centuries of architectural, religious, and local history.

The adjacent River Hiz shares its name with the Hicce, a local tribe first recorded after the end of Roman rule.

The Old Quaker Meeting House of 1840 (now Centenary House) was replaced in 1959 with a modern building straddling the Burial Ground opposite.

The ground itself is of great interest as the final resting place of many of Hitchin’s Quaker inhabitants (such as the Ransoms, Lucases, and Seebohms) who have been deeply influential in the story of the town since the 18th century.

The British Schools were founded by local solicitor William Wilshere in 1810.

The key buildings were erected between 1837 and 1857, including the only surviving Lancasterian Hall. This hall was designed for the famous Monitorial System, where several classes were taught by a single master helped by older pupils acting as “Monitors.”

The Priory was founded in the early 14th century as a Carmelite Friary, The Priory was home to the Delme-Radcliffes from shortly after its Dissolution in 1538 until 1964. Although it still contains original cloisters and a 17th-century façade visible from Bridge Street, the building is mainly a 1770-77 remodeling in the style of Robert Adam. Extensively restored, The Priory is today a hotel and frequently plays host to some of the biggest musical acts!

Hitchin Outer Orbital Path (The Hoop)

This peaceful nature reserve is named after the springs that feed the River Purwell and create a network of ponds, streams and wetlands.

Discover Hitchin from a new perspective on The Hoop, a 12-mile circular route linking countryside, green spaces, and scenic rural views.

A wander through the reserve offers a real escape from the bustle of everyday life. Wooden walkways and easy paths wind through reed beds and wildflowerrich grassland, making it a fantastic spot for wildlife watching. Windmill Hill Located right in the town centre, Windmill Hill (formerly Rawlings Hill) is named after a mill that stood at its peak until 1875.

The Chilterns For bigger views and a true countryside feel, head towards the Chilterns. This stunning landscape of rolling hills, ancient woodlands and chalk grasslands is perfect for walkers and cyclists alike.

Though a short walk, it’s highly rewarding. The summit features seating with miles of panoramic views over the church, town, and distant lavender fields and it transforms into a popular sledging spot when winter snow hits!

There are routes to suit every ability.

You can enjoy a gentle afternoon ramble or tackle a more challenging day out that takes in some of the area's best scenery.

Along the way, you'll find picturesque villages, cosy pubs and plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the views. The changing seasons bring something different each time you visit, from bluebell woods in spring to golden landscapes in autumn.
