The girl who wears her on her sleeve

As November

sweeps in with its chilly air and early sunsets, we find ourselves leaning into all things cozy, colourful and inspiring. With the darker nights drawing in, it’s all too easy to feel that familiar winter lull – but not to worry, as we’ve got just the thing to keep the creative light on! This month, we’re thrilled to feature the work of artist Rebecca Grant, whose pieces bring warmth and vibrancy that radiate right o the page. Rebecca’s art feels like the visual equivalent of a good fireside chat, reminding us that creativity can be a beacon, even in the gloomiest months.

Now, it wouldn’t be November without a quick nod to Movember! It’s the time to cheer on all those braving the challenge to raise awareness for men’s health – an e ort that deserves a round of applause (and perhaps a celebratory pint or two).

On a personal note, this month marks my 100th issue as editor of Places&Faces. It’s been an incredible journey, filled with stories, faces... and places that never cease to amaze me. Thank you for being a part of this journey, issue after issue, and for your continued support and enthusiasm that makes each edition a joy to create.

So, whether you’re exploring new ways to brighten your space, enjoying the seasonal shift, or simply taking a quiet moment with a cup of something warm, I hope this issue brings you a spark of joy and inspiration. Here’s to cozy nights, creative lights, and another hundred issues to come!

Thursford

A festive feast for all the senses!

Thursford

is home to the famous Christmas Spectacular, a threehour extravaganza of non-stop singing, dancing, music, comedy, and speciality acts. Firmly putting North Norfolk on the map, the show has grown from a small carol concert in an old farm shed, into one of the biggest Christmas shows of its kind in Europe. Every November and December, the Thursford Steam Museum (which houses the world’s largest collection of steam engines and organs) is transformed into a winter wonderland, offering audiences the opportunity to escape into the world of Christmas and leave their troubles at the door.

With a new show every year, the team continually strives to push the limits in terms of performance and production, becoming bigger and better than the last. Preparations for the show begin

in January and continues throughout the year up until rehearsals start in September. In 2023, the show welcomed its most immersive production yet with the installation of a new state-of-the-art sound system. This year there have been upgrades to the seating, lighting and the Wurlitzer organ. The show will also welcome four new world-class speciality acts with a Contortion Duo from Ukraine, an Icarian act from Italy, a Diablo act from Chile, and return of Extreme Mountain Biker, Danny Butler – this time as a duo. The show also welcomes the return of comedian and compere, Lloyd Hollett –The Comedy Wordsmith after a successful first year.

Performed through song, music, and dance, this Christmas story takes audiences on a journey to Christmas Eve. With a cast of over 120 singers,

dancers, live orchestra, and speciality acts performing on a 130ft stage and across the aisles inside a 1,400 seated steam museum, entertainment doesn’t get much bigger than this!

John Cushing OBE, Director, and Producer said: “Thursford offers something for everyone. Whether it’s classic Christmas carols, opera, musicals, or all out theatre, there is an abundance of festive fun to enjoy. Audiences travel from all over the country and overseas to see our show. Tickets sell out every year so book early to avoid disappointment.”

Ticket prices for 2024 have been frozen in a bid to tackle the rising costs and as a thank you to both coach operators and customers who continue to book yearafter-year. The decision is a testament to Thursford’s commitment to providing affordable, world-class entertainment during the festive season.

The Thursford Christmas Spectacular was recently named Best Christmas Experience at the Group Leisure and Travel Awards. The annual initiative is organised by Group Leisure & Travel magazine and voted for by readers who organise all sorts of day trips, short breaks and holidays for clubs, societies, local communities, friends and family.

Running from 8th November – 23rd December 2024 with performances at 2pm and 7pm, tickets for the 47th production are on sale now. Visitors can also stop by the shopping village and enjoy a bite to eat in the Garden Pavilion. The complex is fully accessible and offers free parking.

From heroin dependency to the addictive farming system: The art museum asking big questions

Continuing

their investigation into Why Do We Take Drugs?, the Sainsbury Centre is launching brand new exhibitions this month, looking into the harsher realities of drug usage.

e world-class art museum in Norwich has been inviting visitors to explore our millennia-old relationship with intoxicants and stimulants, from illegal to familiar, delving into drug cultures around the world across one mind-blowing museum landscape.

e opening two exhibitions, Ayahuasca & Art of the Amazon, and Power Plants: Intoxicants, Stimulants and Narcotics, look at themes of the use of substances ranging from amphetamines and ca eine to ayahuasca and tobacco.

to the rituals of his habit. e resulting images un inchingly depict his drug dependency.

MacIndoe has been in recovery for nearly 15 years, volunteering to help others access harm reduction, treatment, and recovery support.

Describing his process, he says: “Even in that haziness of dependency and the

Art is meant to be so varied and refl ect so many di erent types of people, so why shouldn’t it refl ect someone who struggles with their mental health?

e second instalment of the season will investigate the harsher side of substance use. Exploring alcohol, antidepressants and heroin, plus pesticides and nature, through ceramics, photography and sculpture.

Heroin Falls un inchingly reveals heroin dependency as seen through the eyes of two remarkable photographers. Magnum photographer Lindokuhle Sobekwa was invited to capture a group of young men living in the South African township of okoza, where they turned to using Nyaope, a lowgrade form of heroin.

Sobekwa explains: “ e Nyaope project was really about the fragile family created out of circumstances, rather the biological familywith the shack being a home to meet, smoke and have conversations.”

Scottish-born, New York-based photographer Graham MacIndoe took a very di erent approach: he photographed himself during the years he was dependant on heroin.

He’d place a cheap digital camera on a table or bookshelf, set the self-timer to take a photo every so o en, then turn his attention

surrounding chaos and disruption in my life, I was still thinking like a photographer. It just seemed very instinctive for me to start recording what I was going through, to document dependency from the inside.”

Alongside Heroin Falls, award-winning artist Lindsey Mendick subverts the tradition of ceramics with darkly comic, confessional works in Hot Mess.

Her newly commissioned series of sculptures for Why Do We Take Drugs? are strikingly personal and tackle a number of social taboos, bravely revealing Mendick’s reliance on antidepressants and alcohol.

Mendick has created a surprising ceramic intervention, sat amongst the Sainsbury Centre’s permanent display and disrupting the clean aesthetic, rather like an unruly and unwelcome guest at a party.

She explains: “Art is meant to be so varied and re ect so many di erent types of people, so why shouldn’t it re ect someone who struggles with their mental health like I have?

“I asked my friend, ‘How bad was I last night?’ And they were like, ‘Girl, you were a

hot mess.’

“ is is a self-portrait of how I am now, with the desperation to join the party and to get drunk, and the utter shame and selfloathing when I’ve lost my inhibitions and let myself go. I want the work to show the desperate attempts at trying to piece myself back together.”

Finally, joining the Sainsbury Centre’s Sculpture Park, three four-meter high sculptures explore nature as a vital drug for health and wellbeing.

e haystack-like structures, made from abundant East Anglian agricultural organic materials such as hemp, straw, hay, sheep’s wool, and timber, encourage visitors to reassess their own connections to the natural world.

When asked about how agriculture is addicted to drugs, Morison replied: “It’s the pharmaceutical companies and agribusinesses. ese same companies sell the herbicides and pesticides that farmers need. It’s an addictive, broken system that’s very hard for farmers to escape. e parallels to pharmaceutical drug dependency are striking. It’s uncanny that the same companies are involved in both sectors.”

Ayahuasca & Art of the Amazon, and Power Plants: Intoxicants, Stimulants and Narcotics continue until 2 February. Heroin Falls, Lindsey Mendick: Hot Mess, and Ivan Morison: Towards the Weird Heart of Things, opens 23 November until 27 April.

Chatting to Northern Ballet's Bah,

SCROOGE

We sat

down with Jonathan Hanks, who plays Scrooge in Northern Ballet's version of A Christmas Carol, which is stopping o at Norwich Theatre Royal between 19 and 23 November. We chatted about switching into Scrooge mode, relaxing after shows, and interesting Christmas traditions.

How've you been preparing for the role of Scrooge?

I’ve been prepared intensively with Jeremy Kerridge who created the role of Scrooge in the original production of Northern Ballet’s A Christmas Carol and he has given me so many useful insights into how to play the character. But of course I have my own ideas, and how wonderful to play somebody that has two distinct sides to him, romantic and mean.

Why do you think his story has survived the test of time? Because it’s a story about the regeneration of the human spirit - going from negative to positive. It’s a story of redemption and everybody loves a story about a soul that’s been saved.

How do you get into character before performances?

I get my brain into Scrooge mode on my way to the theatre and as our Wigs and Make-up teams applies my make up the character stares back at me in the mirror. It’s strange changing from a young man into an old man!

What's your favourite scene to dance in the ballet?

The solo getting dressed to go to the parade of plenty. It’s the only time in the ballet where I can really be happy and express my joy and love for dance and communicating happiness to the audience. And it’s ending everything on an optimistic note.

How do you 'de-Scrooge'/relax after a show?

I treat myself to a facial with face masks as I feel my skin needs it after all the old aging make up and making Scrooge faces!

How will you be celebrating Christmas this year?

With my family in Gloucester. We are a very close family and I love Christmas with my loved ones.

Do you have any interesting Christmas traditions?

We always watch the monarch’s speech, we wear party hats, pull crackers and show our love for each other.

Are you a Scrooge or a Cratchit at heart?

I think I’m a very generous person and very loving – so all my friends tell me!

Northern Ballet’s A Christmas Carol is at Norwich Theatre Royal between 19 – 23 Nov. Don’t miss Northern Ballet revealed on Wed 20 Nov which gives you an insight into the life of a touring ballet company and what it takes to bring a production like A Christmas Carol to life.

get shopping Christmas

let's

Norwich is home to one of the highest numbers of independent shops per resident says Melanie Cook of VisitNorwich. www.VisitNorwich.co.uk

Ascity centres go, Norwich has a lot going for it. Firstly, it’s fairly uncomplicated getting to Norwich by public transport with its bus and train stations within walking distance of everything. Locally, First Bus have recently increased the frequency of some routes and introduced a high number of new electric buses. It helps too that bus fares remain currently at £2 per trip!

If you need to bring the car then the city is served by five Park & Rides sites. As you swan up the bus lane whilst the drivers are left queueing, feel smug. Norwich has a good number of car parks but no matter what city you are in at this time of year car parks get busy if you are not out early!

But once here where should we be heading? Statistics from statista.com report that in the UK last year 74% of gifts were purchased online with 46% from supermarkets/discount stores and 42% from department stores. 28% and 27% respectively were purchased from Christmas Markets and speciality shops. Call me old fashioned but I really really prefer to shop in bricks and mortar stores. I love to touch and see up close what’s on o er – this is often the deciding factor of whether I buy or

not. Smell is important too especially at this time of the year when every brand seems to have launched a delectable candle. I also love a friendly welcome and a kindly chat - it goes a very long way – and I appreciate that. But up there as well is the fact that I am supporting local.

The stats say it all, we need to be shopping more in person. If we don’t shop locally, our high streets would begin to lose independent and big stores (we’ve seen the likes of Debenhams and Wilko go already), and the city centre would quickly be washed of its identity. Big established high street stores are important because people want them – they attract people in but to have choice and to have our city centre not looking the same as every other city centre – well, that’s important too. There’s room for independents and high street faves rubbing shoulder to shoulder, complementing each other. New stores in Norwich this year includes Loake Shoemakers on White Lion Street, Søstrene Grene and Pascale on London Street, Flannels and Mango in Chantry Place and B-leaf, Lazy Lobster and E-velo all located in the Royal Arcade.

But we do need to shop in person, to keep our high streets thriving and exciting. Plus, at Christmas there are lots of festive events to keep us happy whilst we shop. Live music, o ers and special evening shopping events –you don’t get this online. My tip is to subscribe to store e-newsletters so you are the first to hear what’s on – that way if there is something you want to go to you can invite a few friends along too. Maybe even have a bite to eat and a catch up at the same time.

Our love for shopping centres (in Norwich Chantry Place and Castle Quarter) will never go away and at this time of year their festive season decorations and the hustle and bustle in our much-loved high street favourites such as Apple, Zara, H&M and TKMaxx pulls us in. They also give us copious amounts of places to eat and drink when we need a break from shopping, you can grab a take-away or sit down and savour a great meal. In addition to this, add in Norwich’s regional flag-ship stores like Marks & Spencer.

Getting from one neighbourhood in Norwich to another is a blessing due to its compact medieval street pattern. So, without thinking too hard about where we want to head to, we can go wherever takes our fancy in the moment. And with the huge number of pavement cafes, Norwich’s thirst for co ee means we can rest well in between getting from A to B to C, D and E. We have a great co ee culture here.

I love Magdalen Street for its secondhand and collectables such as Looses.

And Tombland and Elm Hill for their historic backdrops and book, antiques, and quirky little shops selling artisan and artists-made gifts.

The Norwich Lanes are again a haven for independents with temptation to be found around every corner. Atwin on Bridewell Alley specialises in highquality local and UK brands from clothes, lifestyle and skincare to jewellery, stationary and sublime knits. Moosey Art in Labour In Vain Yard is a very cool gallery with exhibitions where you can buy original art at reasonable prices (they have sister galleries in Islington and Hoxton). Bowhill & Elliott at the top of London Street are the only one-of-itskind store in the UK where they make their hand-made luxury slippers at the back of the shop and sell in the front.

Two family-run businesses that have been around for generations (so they know what they’re doing) are Dipples on Swan Lane, selling exquisite jewellery, diamonds and watches, and Jarrolds Independent Department store on London Street.

Department stores come into their own at Christmas – do not underestimate their allure. With mood enhancing, toe tapping festive tunes from Bing to Bublé piping out and temptation oozing from every display – it’s most hypnotic. And none more so than at Jarrolds and John Lewis both of which ooze star quality, bedecked gloriously inside and out with glistening Christmas lights.

At Jarrolds over 5-floors (and The Granary on Bedford Street), take your time exploring. Jarrolds – winner of the Independent Department Store 2024 at the Drapers Independents Awards - has 50 departments to dive

into including beauty treatments, six places to eat and drink and the most fantastic food hall brimming with local brands such as The English Distillery. You can totally understand why they won. A lot of investment has gone into making Jarrolds what it is today, and it isn’t stopping anytime soon with a spa opening in the not-too-distant future.

At John Lewis I never know where to look first! Everything’s so beautifully presented from jewel-coloured boxes of Prestat handcrafted chocolates to their Christmas department which sends my head into a spin wowing at their festive themed room ideas. According to Good Housekeeping, ‘Kitchmas’ is this year’s trend! But depending on where you look, getting one answer to the Christmas colour trend is quite amusing with every online search coming back with a di erent answer. So good luck with that one. I’m going dusky pink – seems that’s not a trend.

Christmas markets are another seasonal treat – I love the music and winter food and drink that goes with them. You can find some fantastic unique gifts and decorations for your tree of which many are made in Norfolk. Two of my favourites are Festive Fair at the Forum (28 Nov – 1 Dec) and the Winter Clutter City Market (7 Dec) at Norwich Arts Centre. Try going a bit later in the day so it’s getting dark outside before heading for a Glühwein at Sir Toby’s Beers on the market. You can’t beat it – I say it every year!

Finally, our glittering Royal Arcade goes from strength to strength with new stores opening all the time it seems. And it’s perfect for gift-giving. Think beautiful boxes of pastel-coloured macarons, verdant indoor plants, pretty pink and red vases, exotic scents, hand-crafted jewellery, locally made cosmetics and skincare, and even streamlined designled electric bikes.

I’m ending with a few more stats. In 2023, around half of the UK population coveted money and gift cards as presents. That makes me feel ever so slightly sad. And £700 million was spent on unwanted gifts and of that £42 million were just thrown away!

These are extraordinary numbers, and a huge, huge waste. So, when choosing gifts this year – think carefully and creatively. Actually, go shopping to browse what’s out there, because – and I could be wrong – I feel that if we did a bit of research, we could all get the perfect gift for our loved ones – gifts they will love and treasure not gifts they will throw away.

Remember Christmas shopping is all in the prep, so carve out some time this year to go shopping – and enjoy yourself doing it, knowing that when you gift the right present, how good will everyone feel?

GrantRebecca

Rebecca Grant, a renowned contemporary artist known for her bold and magical creations opens up about her journey from canvas to catwalk and beyond...

Rebecca

The girl who wears her on her sleeve Art

Grant is the kind of artist who makes you believe in magic. Not the kind of magic you find in fairy tales, but the kind that comes from pouring your heart and soul into a creation, and watching it come to life. For Rebecca, art is more than a career – it’s a form of communication, a way to express the inexpressible. Her work, whether hanging on gallery walls or adorning the bodies of fashionistas, tells stories of beauty, unity, and the timelessness of the human spirit. And that’s exactly why she’s a force to be reckoned with.

Photo: Jim Holden

Rebecca’s story began in a hospital bed at just 16 years old. A severe asthma attack left her in a coma, teetering on the edge of life and death. When she finally awoke, something had changed. It was as if the experience had unlocked a new way for her to express herself, and she began painting with an intensity and focus she had never known before.

"I think near-death experiences have a way of making you reassess your life," Rebecca says, her voice thoughtful but warm during our Zoom interview. "When

see first hand how far she had come.

"It was a full-circle moment for me," Rebecca recalls. "To be able to give back to the people who had given me so much – that was really special."

A childhood of creativity and expression

Rebecca’s artistic journey didn’t start in that hospital bed, though. She had been creating long before that, growing up in a home filled with art, music, and creativity. Her mother, a talented

My art is about unity. It’s about finding common ground, celebrating what makes us unique while also reminding us that we are all part of something bigger.

I came out of that hospital, I just felt this overwhelming need to create. I didn’t know what I was creating at first, but I knew I had to put it on the canvas."

It didn’t take long for others to notice her talent. By the age of 17, Rebecca’s work was already being recognised by some of the most prestigious names in the art world. She won the Young Artists Award as part of The Prince’s Trust, and her painting was exhibited at Hampton Court Palace. The piece was later gifted to Nottingham University Hospital, where the doctors and nurses who had saved her life the previous year were able to

seamstress, often involved Rebecca and her sisters in making costumes for their theatre productions.

“We’d all be sitting by the fire, working on these incredible outfits for shows like The King and I. It was magical,” she reminisces with a fond smile. "I think that’s where I developed my love for colour, drama, and theatricality in my art."

Even as a child, Rebecca knew that art was her calling. She spent hours sketching and painting, and at an early age she was selling her work on the streets of Nottingham alongside her friend and fellow artist, Pete Spowage.

It was a humble start, but one that would eventually lead to international recognition.

Rebecca’s early experiences of selling her art directly to the public gave her a unique perspective on what it means to connect with an audience. "I think it’s one of the reasons I’ve always been so down-to-earth about my work," she says. "It’s not about being up on a pedestal as an artist; it’s about creating something that speaks to people, that they can relate to."

Finding Unity in Art

Rebecca’s art is more than just visually striking – it’s deeply meaningful. As she speaks about her work, it’s clear that she sees each piece as an exploration of the connection between humanity and the natural world, between the physical and the spiritual.

"My art is about unity," she explains. "It’s about finding common ground, celebrating what makes us unique while also reminding us that we are all part of something bigger."

This theme of unity runs through all of her collections, from the nautical drama of her Set Sail Collection to the introspective journey of her Yellow Brick Road Collection. In both, Rebecca draws on her spiritual beliefs and her fascination with the human experience.

"After my coma, I started thinking a lot about what it means to be alive – not just in a physical sense, but in a spiritual one. That’s something I try to capture in my paintings, this idea that there’s more to life than what we see on the surface."

Her Set Sail Collection, for example, is not just about luxury yachts and maritime

history. It’s about the relationship between mankind and the sea, about survival, teamwork, and the beauty of nature. Rebecca uses bold brushstrokes, rich colours, and gold leaf to create a sense of drama and movement, as if the viewer is standing on deck, feeling the wind and the spray of the ocean.

"I want people to feel like they’re part of the scene, and feel the excitement of the crew working together." she says.

In her Yellow Brick Road Collection, Rebecca takes a more introspective approach. The collection is a reflection on life’s journey, on the paths we are "whipped into" and the choices we make along the way. "It’s about the journey we’re all on, the influences that shape us, and the possibility of stepping o the road to explore something di erent."

From Canvas to Catwalk

Recently, Rebecca has taken her art in a bold new direction – literally, onto the catwalk. Her Canvas to Catwalk collection has transformed her vibrant, theatrical paintings into wearable works of art, with silk scarves and sarongs featuring designs from her Set Sail and Koi Fish collections.

"It was such a natural transition," she says. "I’ve always loved fashion, and the idea of turning my paintings into something people could wear just felt right."

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Rebecca’s silk scarves have become a hit, not just in the UK but internationally, with fashionistas and art lovers alike

clamouring to wrap themselves in her creations. One of the highlights of this new venture was when she and her husband, Ivan Pierson, packed up their car and drove to the French Riviera for a fashion show in Nice.

"We just loaded up the back of the car with paintings and scarves and headed o ," she laughs. "It was such an adventure, and seeing my art on the catwalk in Nice was surreal – in the best way."

But for Rebecca, it’s not just about fashion. It’s about finding new ways to connect with people through her art. "Whether it’s on a canvas or a piece of clothing, it’s still about creating something that resonates with people, that makes them feel something."

A Life in Balance

Despite her success, Rebecca remains incredibly grounded. Her studio is at her home in Norfolk, where she lives a quiet, balanced life with her husband and two children.

"I’ve always been a homebody," she admits. "I love the peace and quiet of Norfolk. It’s the perfect place to create."

But that doesn’t mean her life is without its challenges. As anyone in the creative industries knows, being an artist can be a rollercoaster. There are moments of doubt, of feeling unsure of the next step, but Rebecca has learned to trust the process.

"Painting is a journey of self-discovery," she says. "You don’t always know where it’s going to lead, but you have to trust that it will take you somewhere meaningful."

Her belief in the power of creativity is something she carries with her, not just in her art but in her everyday life. "A little belief goes a long way," she says with a smile. "That’s something I always try to remember. If you believe in what you’re doing, that belief will carry you through."

Looking Ahead

As we chat, it becomes clear that Rebecca’s journey is far from over. She has a solo show coming up in London next year, and she’s constantly working on new pieces for her collections. Her Set Sail Collection is expanding, incorporating new materials like crushed mother of pearl and lapis lazuli to add even more texture and depth to her work.

"I’m always experimenting," she says. "That’s the fun of it. There’s always something new to discover."

But even as she looks to the future, Rebecca remains focused on her core mission: creating art that connects, inspires, and uplifts. Whether she’s painting luxury yachts, exploring life’s journey, or turning her art into fashion, her goal remains the same: to communicate, to connect, and to celebrate the beauty of life.

Rebecca Grant’s art is a celebration of life – vibrant, bold, and full of heart. From her early days on the streets of Nottingham to her exhibitions in London and beyond, she continues to inspire with her creativity, her passion, and her unwavering belief in the power of art to bring people together. Whether you’re admiring her work on canvas or wrapping yourself in one of her silk scarves, one thing is certain: Rebecca’s art is more than just something to look at. It’s something to feel, to experience, and to believe in.

Unique giving The Gift of

‘Tis the season

of too many things to worry about and whilst your brain is scanning through a hundred internal browser tabs of charming Christmas decorations and Pinterest inspired tableware, we all know the biggie is finding the perfect present. If you’re struggling this shopping season, here’s some ideas that won’t break the bank or your increasingly strained spirit.

Pot o’ Plans

We’ve all been there. It’s a glorious Saturday afternoon, the weather has taken a break from its residential inclemency and the world is full of possibilities…but you have absolutely no idea what to do with yourself. Everything you can think of seems more overdone than a Disney remake and you’re stuck in social quicksand. Step forth, Pot O’Plans. The premise is simple enough. Plan to fill a pot or jar with activity ideas to swap with a friend or family member. Pimp it up by adding in some cinema tickets or a voucher for your favourite restaurant and share those lovinglife lightbulb moments with someone you care for. It can be as cheap or as expensive as your bank account dictates and will prove that in this case, it’s literally the thought that counts.

Yes, M’Lady

If like me, you grew up watching such televisual gold as Monarch of Glen on a Sunday night, you may also have fancied your arm as a Lord or Lady of the Manor. For £28.95, you can do just that! Visit lordtitles.co.uk to purchase your friends or significant other a bit of fun that will titivate their title. Try saying that after a mega-pint of mulled wine. You can even treat yourself to a titular upgrade by purchasing the double bubble bonus for £38.95. Packs include a legal deed, personalised certificate and five square feet of land within the Hougun Manor estate. The size of which doesn’t need to be specified when regaling your pauper friends with tales of the property you’ve acquired in the Lake District. And yes, it allows the bearer to change their honorific title to Lord or Lady on documentation. You’re welcome, M’Lord.

100 books bucket list

As an avid reader, this one is right up my Baker Street. Available in children and adult editions, these scratch o posters outline a bucket list of the 100 greatest books ever written. Check them out on notonthehighstreet.com. With prices starting at £12.99, you could even throw in a couple of the titles to start the recipient on their journey of literary enlightenment. Also obtainable in movie and travel location versions, these interactive posters set the pace for an adventure that will see a whole year through. Truly a gift that keeps on giving, it could even win you friends and influence people. You see what I did there.

In a sky full of stars

You won’t just think you’ll see them; you can actually immortalise your loved ones by assigning their name to a star in the night sky. Or let them choose their own moniker for a gift that ‘shines forever’. Giftrepublic.com packs start at £19.99 and include a personalised star deed, illustrated constellation poster and booklet that explains the history of stars. A musthave for any astrophile... or Star Wars or Brian Cox or Coldplay fan.

Workshop It

We all know a person that seemingly has everything, the one you dread pulling out of a Secret Santa ballot. Stress not, I’d wager they’ve never attended a class on cocktail making or learned how to weave their own basket. Both transferrable skills in the event of an apocalypse. On a local level, the Southwold Flower Company o er workshops in everything from Christmas bauble design to wreath making. Very demure, very mindful. Prices start from £12pp and will carry that clean girl summer vibe all the way into 2025.

Grow Your Own Way

The millennial obsession to nurture plants feels like a hangover from a childhood of raising Tamagotchis. Probably with the same varying degrees of success. But for the horticulturallyinclined the gift of a plant is a present that can potentially last a lifetime. For those with a serious green finger, happyhouseplants.co.uk o ers luxury plants (I can only imagine they thrive on the manure of racehorses and bottled Volvic) from £19.99 upwards. Or for those who appreciate some blossombased whimsy, Etsy.com boasts an array of plant pots that include retro tin cans and Snoop Dog’s head. Prop(agation) like it’s hot. Sorry not sorry.

The internet is full of weird and wonderful ideas to elevate your gift giving this holiday season. Although if you fi nd you’ve wandered into Bunjesus terriority, you’ve gone too far. Google it though, for the LOLs. Happy shopping, possums.

AT JOHN LEWIS NORWICH COOKING & DINING

BEEF & VEGETABLE HOTPOT WITH HORSERADISH DUMPLINGS

Ingredients: Serves: 2

• 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil

• 2 small carrots, scrubbed and cut into thin rounds

• 2 small parsnips, peeled and cut into long wedges

• 1 onion, chopped

• 1 leek, thinly sliced

• 2 tsp plain flour

• 380g pack slow cooked beef brisket

• 400ml beef stock

METHOD:

• ½ x 140g Aunt Bessie’s Dumpling Mix

• 1 tbsp Essential Hot Horseradish Sauce

• ½ x 25g pack flat leaf parsley, leaves finely chopped

• 2 pickled walnuts, drained and roughly chopped

Heat the oil in a large, shallow pan and fry the carrots, parsnips, onion and leek for 5 minutes. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute more. Pour in the liquor from the beef pouch with the stock. Bring to the boil, stirring, then cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes until the vegetables have softened. Meanwhile, cut the beef into bitesized pieces.

Tip the dumpling mix into a bowl and stir in the horseradish sauce, threequarters of the parsley and 2 tbsp cold water, adding a dash more water if needed, to mix to a soft paste.

Add the beef and walnuts to the hotpot. Place 4 spoonfuls dumpling mix across the top and cover with a lid.

Simmer for 12-15 minutes, until the dumplings have risen and the meat is piping hot throughout. Transfer to plates and serve, sprinkled with the remaining parsley.

Cook’s tip

If you have beef or vegetable suet and selfraising flour, use instead of the dumpling mix. Combine 50g flour, 25g suet and 2-3 tbsp water in a bowl with the horseradish sauce and parsley.

steamed Marmalade sponges

Ingredients:

Serves: 4

• 8 tablespoons of Sunrise marmalade

• 1 tablespoon lemon juice

• Grated rind of 1 Lemon

• 100g soften butter

• 100g caster sugar

METHOD:

• 2 large eggs

• 100g self-raising flour

Winter is truly here and I love a comforting desert to warm up with as the nights have drawn in. My individual sponges make an easy pudding and can be multiplied to cater for a pre -Christmas party or get together.

Alice• 1 level teaspoon baking powder

• Plus some warmed ART’s Sunrise marmalade to serve

Grease four 175 ml pudding basins. Measure the marmalade into a pan and warm it until it reaches a runny consistency, then strain out the rind and set it aside. Mix the lemon juice with the smooth marmalade and divide evenly among the basins.

Place all the remaining ingredients into a mixing bowl and beat well for 2 minutes or until thoroughly blended. Divide the mixture among the basins and smooth the tops. Cover each basin with a pleated lid of baking parchment, then foil, to allow for steam expansion during cooking.

Place the basins into a large pan with enough boiling water to reach halfway up each basin. Steam for 45 minutes, standing the basins on upturned saucers to keep them off the pan's bottom. Ensure the water level stays topped up as needed.

To serve, gently warm 2 tablespoons of Sunrise Marmalade in a pan (adding the reserved rind) until it reaches a pouring consistency, then serve in a jug as a glaze.

Rebecca Talbot, the creative force behind Arts Craft Kitchen, is having a stellar 2024 with multiple prestigious awards for her handcrafted preserves. Her Merry Berry Jam, a delightful blend of blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries, earned a 1-star Great Taste Award for the second time.

Alice’s accolades don’t stop there. At the World Jam Awards 2024, her inventive creations brought home two more honors.

Weddings to om Whisks

Meet Denise Brady, an award-winning food photographer based in Lowestoft who has turned her passion for food and photography into a thriving business: The Culinary Camera. Denise began her career over a decade ago as a wedding photographer and has since earned five awards, including Lux Life Magazine’s Food Photographer of the Year 2024 (East Anglia).

Thelockdown was the push Denise needed to get her creative juices flowing. After spending 13 years as a successful wedding photographer, the COVID-19 pandemic brought her work, like many others, to an abrupt halt.

“It was a challenging time, but it pushed me to think outside the box and rediscover my passion. I was shooting weddings every weekend, sometimes two in a row. My income stopped

overnight, so I needed to find something to do within my photography to rebuild that. It was like starting all over again. I thought, "I like nice food; we always eat out—or had done until lockdown—so why not photograph it?”

Starting during lockdown was challenging, but it was what really sparked Denise’s creativity. “I took a couple of online courses initially, one with a woman who was a baker and

another I found through the Guild of Photographers. It taught me the basics to get started. Switching from weddings to food wasn’t just a career change—it was a chance to do something I truly loved.”

During the pandemic, many restaurants, bakers, and food makers began to adapt, and Denise seized the opportunity. “I bought a few products online, took photos of them, and sent the images to the businesses. They loved what I created! What started as a free o ering has turned into a niche business. Her love for sweet things landed Denise her first job. “One company I collaborated with was based in Cambridge. They made boxed brownies that you’d receive through your letterbox. I got a box from them, photographed it, and really, that’s where it all began.”

The Trickiest Dish to Photograph: Pastries!

Food photography isn’t without its challenges. According to Denise, some dishes are harder to capture than others—especially pastries. “Pastries are di cult because they tend to be brown. The more colour, the better,” she explains. “In that situation, I add colour to give that pop. A lot of people like that rustic look, but if you place brown on wood, it just looks flat. We have to elevate it—if they want a rustic board, we can add edible flowers to bring vibrancy. You don’t want to be looking at a croissant on a wooden board against a wooden background; it just doesn’t work.”

To get the perfect shot, it’s all about building a scene. For example, if you have a cake, it’s important to consider how and where you would eat that cake. “You would look at the plate it’s on, the fork you’d use, and if you’re having it with a cup of tea, what does the cup look like? Is there a teapot to go with that? What does the teapot look like? It is so much more than just the cake; emotion and storytelling come into it. Anyone who makes food wants to evoke an emotion.”

Family, Food, and Tradition

“My husband and I have four children between us, five grandchildren, and another on the way. Family has always been close to my heart and is an inspiration for my love of food. In addition to photographing food, I love

to cook and bake myself,” she says. This passion was passed onto Denise by her mother. “I grew up with a mother who loved to cook, and she always had us in the kitchen with her.”

With her mum being a nurse, Denise would also spend time with her grandparents and great-grandparents. “I was very lucky to have my greatgrandma, and she was always cooking. My earliest memories of food are from being in my great-grandma's kitchen, with an old-fashioned blackened stove, watching her make pastry and sausage rolls. I would sit at the table helping her as a tiny girl. The smells of that pastry cooking are so memorable—almost ironic now that pastries are probably one of the hardest foods to photograph,” Denise laughs.

Denise’s home life mirrors her childhood. Her kitchen is the heart of the house, where her children and grandchildren gather around the table for meals. “We cook together, just like I did with my mum and grandma. There’s something so special about that,” she says. One of her family’s favourite recipes is her Victoria sponge cake. “Baking it always brings me back to those moments in my greatgrandmother’s kitchen. Food has always meant family and togetherness, so I am not surprised that my line of work and profession involves food.”

The Life of a Food Photographer

What’s it like being a food photographer? Denise smiles as she recalls one of the most common questions she’s asked: "Do you get to eat the food afterward?" She explains, “Sometimes yes, but often no, because the food can sit around for ages while I capture the perfect shot. By the time I'm done, it’s not quite as appetising!”

When it comes to her favourite cuisine, Denise is quick to answer: “Italian—I love the flavours.” Pizza or pasta? “Definitely pasta.” Sweet or savoury? “I have a soft spot for both!”

Although Denise primarily works around Norfolk and Su olk, her photography takes her to other locations as well. “Some of my favourite local spots to eat include The Ingham Swan, The White Lion, The Dukes Head at Somerleyton, The Bell at Carlton Colville, Rocker Hickman’s, and The Assembly House in Norwich. I recently visited The Fleece in Bungay, and it was fantastic. I’m constantly discovering new pubs and restaurants in my line of work.”

Food Trends and Visual Appeal on Social Media

When it comes to food photography, presentation is everything. Over the years, plating styles have evolved, and Denise has seen it all. “Every trend has its place,” she explains. “We still see some people plating like it’s the 1980s, with big, extravagant designs, while others embrace minimalism and let the food speak for itself.”

In today’s world, where social media dominates, visual appeal is more important than ever. "Food needs to look fresh, vibrant, and enticing," Denise says. The rise of Instagram has also made certain dishes, like burgers and loaded fries, particularly popular because they photograph beautifully from di erent angles.

Denise notes that the right angle can transform a dish. "Burgers, for instance, are best shot straight on to capture all the layers, while flat lays work well for grazing boards or shared meals."

Although some trends, such as grazing boards, have started to fade, others like sustainable dining have taken their place, becoming focal points in both photography and plating. "There's a big push for sustainability now," Denise says, noting the increasing use of locally sourced, eco-friendly ingredients and zero-waste dishes.

Denise’s Favourite

Shoots

Denise has had many rewarding experiences in her career. “One of my favourite shoots was probably at Well Well Well Bathhouse in Lowestoft, where we captured chef pictures, customers, and the overall atmosphere at a Casino themed night,” she shares. She has worked on a range of projects, from Japanese cuisine to pub food, but one she's yet to tick o the list is Chinese food. “I love the creativity of this job,” she says. “It’s a fun process, and the more vibrant the shoot, the better!”

The Advantages of Food Photography

So, what are the benefits of investing in professional food photography? “It showcases food at its best, provides a bank of images for online use, and enhances the brand image against competitors. Capturing quality imagery is crucial for e ective branding.”

Menu Changes - Think Ahead!

“Always think ahead! If businesses are planning menu changes, don’t wait until everything is finalised. Your photos need to be prepared in advance. For example, if you want a Christmas food shoot, it should be planned and shot in September. For big events like Easter or Diwali, aim for two to three months ahead.” For seasonal events like Valentine’s Day and Easter. “It’s essential to start thinking about shooting for these occasions now; they’ll be here before you know it!”

The Future of The Culinary Camera

As Denise continues to grow The Culinary Camera, her sights are set on expanding her business and taking on new challenges. She’s already thinking about branching into cookbook photography, inspired by her family’s traditional recipes. “I’d love to create a cookbook featuring my great-grandmother’s recipes and my photography,” she shares. “It would be a way to preserve those memories and pass them on to future generations.”

For now, though, Denise is content capturing the beauty of food and helping businesses showcase their o erings.

“Every shoot is di erent,” she says. “But the goal is always the same: to make people hungry just by looking at the picture.”

It’s crucial to choose a professional clinic; the industry does have its share of cowboys. Many clients can easily be tempted by low prices, often overlooking the potential health risks and unsatisfactory results. Always check Google reviews and look for credible before-and-after photos. Remember, filtered images can be deceiving!

Eyebrows are the pillars of our faces. Well-placed brows can make us look more inviting, whilst poorly shaped ones can create unwanted impressions. A good brow can even slim the face and open up the eyes!

I’ve had clients come into the clinic with sparse, barely there brows, and they leave looking years younger.

Common Eyebrow Mistakes

Here are a few red flags to watch out for:

• Poor Healing & Infection: Indicates a lack of professionalism.

• Colour Choice: You can have perfectly applied brows, but if the colour is wrong, it throws everything off.

• Overworking the Brow: Excess pressure and poor-quality needles can cause damage.

At Enhance Cosmetic Clinic, we take time to understand every clients’ needs and desires. A thorough consultation process is key to ensuring that both artist and client have transparency and trust before treatment commences. It’s not just about the aesthetics; we want to know who our clients are as individuals. Not all eyebrow mishaps can be fixed; some may require removal first. This can be costly and painful, so it’s vital to choose the right technician from the

start. Remember, unlike when you visit your hairdresser for a cut and colour, once the skin is tattooed, that pigment is layered into the skin for years.

The Perfect Brow Experience

With the right artist, the experience can be magical. We offer complimentary consultations where we discuss colour, shape, and aftercare. Our state of the art equipment and pigment range is certified Reach compliant, so you know we’re using safe products that have been thoroughly tested for use.

Now is a great time for PMU—not just for brows, but also for lips and eyeliner. Many clients say their only regret is that they didn’t come in sooner. And trust me, I hear a lot about life-changing experiences!

Avoiding Common Drawing Mistakes

Here are some common mistakes to steer clear of:

• Using heavy makeup that’s too dark or harsh.

• Wobbly, smudgy pencil lines that lead to uneven brows.

• Placing brows too close together, which makes the eyes look smaller.

• Excessively long tails that can create a droopy effect to the eyes.

Trends may come and go, but we focus on what works best for each unique face shape. Lamination is also a lovely treatment that can be combined with PMU for added texture and defi nition with existing hair once healed.

Personal Note

On a more personal note, I can hardly believe Penelope’s first birthday is just around the corner! It feels like just yesterday she was a tiny newborn. We’re planning a cute tea party with family and, of course, Penelope’s favourite teddies. I’m really looking forward to celebrating this milestone; it’s a special moment for us as parents and a lovely way to reflect on how much she’s grown in just a year.

And speaking of celebrations, we’ve got Black Friday coming up! At the clinic, we always offer fantastic discounts during this time, so do keep an eye out on our socials for those unmissable deals.

Thank you for reading, and I hope this helps you navigate the world of permanent makeup.

Let's talk

about steps. And no, not our favourite pop group from the 90's, but actual steps—as in putting one foot in front of the other. I get it, though; it's easy to think that real fitness means hitting the gym, sweating it out in HIIT, or swinging kettlebells. But what if I told you that one of the most e ective ways to lose weight and boost health doesn't involve any of that? Yep, I'm talking about the underestimated power of walking.

So, what's so special about walking?

Walking is the simple, low-key health hack we've all been sleeping on. Here's why: it's gentle on the joints, a calorieburner without the intensity, clears your head when you're stressed, boosts your mood when you're feeling low, and, if you have a dog, it will love you even more for the extra "walkies". Oh, and it's free–who doesn't love free stu ? And just because it's free doesn't mean it's less valuable.

For every client I work with, walking is just as essential as nutrition, resistance training, and sleep. Without regular movement, it's tough to make real progress. Those who step more tend to lose more—it's a simple, e ective weight-loss game-changer.

Step up your health: how daily steps boost your lymphatic system and overall wellbeing

The lymphatic system acts as the body's cleanup crew, fi ltering out waste, toxins, and excess fl uids to protect against illness. Since it relies on muscle movement (not the heart) to circulate fl uid, walking is a great way to stimulate lymph fl ow, helping to remove waste, reduce infl ammation, and boost your immune system.

The 10,000 step goal... and why you don't need to sweat it

We've all heard the magic "10,000 steps a day," but the number itself isn't what makes the di erence—it's simply a solid goal to aim for. My advice? Start by doing a bit more than you're currently doing. If you're at 2,000 steps a day, aim for 4,000. Already hitting 8,000? Bump it up to 10,000. You get the idea. If you have a step tracker, it can help you visualise your goal. But even if you don't, just aim to keep moving more throughout the day.

Making time to walk even with a busy schedule

Now that you're sold on walking, how do you actually squeeze it into a jampacked day? Here are a few easy tips to get those steps in without needing an extra hour in your schedule:

1. Start your day with a short walk

Set your alarm a little earlier and kick o your day with a quick walk. This way, you've got a bit of movement under your belt before anything else gets in the way. Quick tip: lay out your trainers, hat, gloves and headphones the night before so you're ready to roll, even in chilly weather.

2. Turn everyday tasks into steps

A surprising number of everyday activities can add steps to your day. Pacing while on the phone, moving around while brushing your teeth, or even walking on the spot during TV ads—it all adds up! Not only will you rack up steps, but you'll also feel a little more productive.

3. Look at chores as opportunities

Housework, gardening and DIY are secret step goldmines. Cleaning the car, vacuuming, and mowing the lawn can add to your count. When you start seeing chores as an opportunity to squeeze in steps, they become a little less "ugh" and a little more "yes!"

4. Take a quick post-meal walk

After a meal, a short walk can help digestion, curb cravings, and sneak in extra steps. Even just 5-10 minutes makes a di erence, so if you can make this part of your routine, go for it.

5. Park a bit further away

Instead of circling the car park for the closest spot, pick one further away and enjoy the extra steps. If you're running errands, these small walks to and from the car add up quickly and only take a little extra time.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Step into better health

Walking might be the simplest fitness hack, but it's also one of the most powerful. Whether you're a gym-goer looking to fill the gaps, someone too busy to exercise regularly, or just wanting to move a bit more, walking fits the bill. It's easy, e ective, and, best of all, you can do it anywhere. So, lace up those trainers and start stepping your way to better health!

JOANNE...

4-Week Glow-Up: From Crisp-Loving Queen to Cardio Machine!

Joanne has o cially hit her 4-week mark, and wow, what a transformation! She's not only shed over 7kg (yes, SEVEN) but she's also picked up some game-changing habits along the way. Let's dive into the highlights of her incredible month:

Coffee? Out. Water? In.

First up, Joanne's ca eine intake is down, and her hydration is up! She's traded in her endless co ee refills for good ol' H2O, and trust me, her kidneys and skin are thanking her for it.

Goodbye Crisps, Hello Protein

Snacky foods and beloved crisps? Gone! Joanne has done the unthinkable and swapped out her crunchy weaknesses for nutrient-dense, protein-packed meals. She's learned the beauty of portion control, too, and while the sight of the smaller portions initially threw her o (farewell, heaping piles of food), she's now a true master of mindful eating.

5,000 Steps a Day: Even if It Means Jogging in Front of the TV!

Before this, Joanne struggled to hit 2,000 steps daily, thanks to her inactive job. Now, she's consistently smashing her 5,000-step goal and getting creative with it. Yes, she's been known to walk and jog on the spot during her favourite TV shows, turning binge-watching into her secret cardio weapon. Talk about a dedicated multitasker!

3 Workouts a Week

Joanne's been tackling three home workouts a week, focusing on light bodyweight and dumbbell exercises designed for strength, mobility, and stability—essential for managing her MS. The first couple of weeks were a challenge as her energy dipped from cutting down on sugar, ca eine, and processed foods (that detox struggle is real!), but she powered through like a champ. Now, her energy's back and better than ever.

Bouncing Back

and

Taking It All in Stride

Joanne's energy has soared, and she's following every step of the plan with a level of commitment that's nothing short of inspiring. Not only has her mindset done a 180, but her daily routine is now totally in line with her goals. She's moving more, eating smarter, and feeling stronger.

Joanne has been absolutely smashing it, and with a month ahead full of birthdays, a holiday, and MS treatment, she's about to face some serious temptations. Her mindset and new habits will be put to the test—check back next month to find out how strong they've become!

Luna Babies

The new mother and baby group supporting parental well-being

Haveyou ever heard the term 'missed miscarriage'? Many people haven’t, including Shiarn Land, who learned about it only after experiencing two herself. This journey inspired her to create Luna Babies, a new mother and baby group in Norfolk focused on supporting parents alongside their babies.

Shiarn, a 33-year-old mum to her eight-month-old daughter, Elodie, launched Luna Babies shortly after Elodie's arrival. With over a decade of experience in holistic beauty treatments, she blends her expertise in massage and Reiki with her personal journey to help parents find balance during the chaotic early days of parenthood.

While the focus is often on the baby, Shiarn believes that it’s after birth when parents truly need support. According to the UK government, postnatal depression a ects one in ten new mothers. After Elodie was born, Shiarn faced her own struggles, including postnatal depression, anxiety, and even rage. “I felt guilty for feeling down,” she shares. “I had this gorgeous baby and had been through so much to get her, yet I was overwhelmed by anxiety and anger. Postnatal anxiety and depression is more common in women who have had fertility struggles.” This experience motivated her to help others who might feel the same.

At Luna Babies, the aim is to create a warm community where both parents and babies feel cared for. “I’ve attended many baby groups, but they primarily focused on the babies. At Luna Babies, I ensure parents are looked after too,”

Shiarn emphasises. “I want parents to leave feeling nurtured, relaxed, and connected, knowing they’re not alone in this journey.” In addition to baby massage, the group features meditation sessions tailored for parents and plans to o er mini scalp massages—because who couldn’t use a little pampering after a sleepless night?

Reflecting on her experience, Shiarn says, “Missed miscarriage is heartbreaking and often leaves women feeling isolated. It felt like a close family member had died, but with no funeral or closure, while life carried on as normal." After sharing her experience online, she was overwhelmed by responses from men and women who felt unable to speak. "It showed how common this is and how much support is needed. My husband and I had three losses in a year, which strained our marriage. Support from loved ones is vital, and for some, counselling helps. If you know someone going through this, just listen.”

Currently, there are no o cial statistics on missed miscarriages in the UK. Kate Davies, Associate Director of Information and Support at Tommy’s, the pregnancy and baby charity, highlights the urgency of this issue: “No o cial miscarriage statistics are collected in the UK, making it impossible to know how many families are a ected each year. Many aren’t even aware that you can experience a ‘missed miscarriage,’ when your baby dies in your womb without any symptoms.”

Tommy’s has launched the Every Loss Counts campaign to advocate for the government to record all miscarriages.

As a mother who has experienced missed miscarriage and postnatal depression, Shiarn knows the importance of support. “I have lots of plans for the class, but right now we focus on baby massage and meditation. At the end of each session, babies play while parents take some time for themselves. I’ve learned that when we are stressed, the baby feels it too—so it’s vital to focus on the parent as well. The class may only last an hour and

15 minutes, but it can really help with postnatal depression.”

Classes at Luna Babies are held every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 AM. The introductory o er is £35 for four sessions, available until the end of the year. Discounts are available for NHS sta . Sessions take place at Blundeston Village Hall and Top Body Gym in Gorleston.

If you or anyone you know is a ected by postnatal depression or miscarriage, organisations such as Tommy’s and Mind o er valuable resources. For support, visit their websites or helplines.

A refreshingly FRANK approach to estate agency…

If you’re considering moving and looking for a personal, bespoke and ethical approach. We are here to help.

Opening Doors and the Keys to Success

Oftenreferred to as a pipedream, Frank Estate Agency was founded in early 2020 by Natalie WardKerr and Stephen Kerr. Having spent a number of years working for a large corporate estate agency, it became distinctively apparent to Natalie what an important role an estate agent can play at such a significant time for most buyers and sellers but more interestingly what a di erence an agent who actually cares can make. Having helped hundreds of people move home, it became obvious that clients recognised that Natalie was very di erent to other agents, that she really did care and that her transparent method of working with everyone was quite simply, refreshingly FRANK.

Our goal at Frank is to maintain an ethical approach to everything property related, not the garish target driven culture that fuels a majority of the macho estate agency industry.

Free from the constraints from the world of corporate agency where the advice is often given to clients to fulfil their own bottom line, at Frank we have the freedom to o er impartial and refreshingly Frank advice that’s fits you and your home moving aspirations. We build firm and honest relationships with both buyers and sellers, which have historically proven to become life friendships. Frank is that constant pillar of support through every bend in the home buying and selling journey, fulfilling as many property dreams as possible along the way. Our constant dedication to achieving your personal home moving goals, has and will continue to ensure that Frank is the agent of choice for those seeking a bespoke service.

Since launching, Frank has organically evolved and become a business that we are so proud of, with the brand firmly synonymous with fabulous homes captured with artistic flair thanks to Sam Gee, our photography wizard behind the lens and the unique editorials produced for each home. The freedom of creativity within our marketing has become one of the biggest strengths to the business in addition to the ethical approach we can o er due to the independence we have. If you are thinking of listing your home, there are several key factors which Frank considers essential, to enable us to help you achieve the best possible price for your home and attract the widest audience so that we are in position where we can carefully hand pick the best buyer for you. Equally, this then puts you in a strong position to secure your onward purchase, completing the home moving plan! Step one, together we set a goal we need to achieve by your photo shoot day, this goal will involve streamlining your home and de-cluttering personal e ects whilst still keeping functionality for you and your family on a day-to-day basis. We can all be guilty of acquiring far too many possessions which can cause our homes to become cluttered, but even the smallest de-clutter can help your home feel fresh and spaces appear more usable. This is why pre-launch prep is key to help us achieve your expectations regarding your sale price and quite often proven, surpassed!

7 Simple Steps to a Cosy & Inviting Bedroom

with North Norfolk’s Luxury Bed Specialist

As evenings

gently settle in and the cooler weather makes its arrival, it’s a wonderful opportunity to create a warm, inviting bedroom. This isn’t just about design; it’s about crafting a cosy sanctuary where you can relax and recharge.

This month, we’re excited to team up with Harry Thompson, founder of North Norfolk’s Luxury Bed Specialist - Cheshire and Oldfield - to bring you some thoughtful touches that will transform your bedroom into a delightful retreat, reflecting your unique style while providing comfort and luxury.

Declutter and Organise

A serene bedroom begins with a well-organised space. Decluttering helps reduce stress and promotes a more relaxing environment. Begin by thoroughly evaluating your belongings. Sort items into categories: keep, donate, or discard. Utilise practical storage solutions like beds with built-in drawers, boxes and baskets to maintain order.

Choose a Soothing Colour Palette

The colours in your bedroom are so crucial for creating a relaxing and restful atmosphere. Choosing soft, muted tones like greys, blues, and pastels can help bring in that sense of calm and serenity, making it easier to unwind. Consider adding a neutral accent colour when looking for a new bed, as these will stand the test of time and easily complement any future style changes!

This isn’t just about design; it’s about cra ing a cosy sanctuary where you can relax and recharge.

Invest in a Quality Bed

Creating a cozy atmosphere at night starts with choosing a high-quality bed, which is essential for a restful sleep and an inviting bedroom look. When you're on the hunt for a new bed, consider those made from durable materials that combine sturdiness with timeless designs, making them perfect for a range of interior styles that might evolve over the years. Investing in a quality bed now will not only save you money in the long run but also reward you with comforting nights of sleep.

Personalise with Unique Furniture

Make your bedroom yours by adding unique furniture that showcases your style! Consider choosing an upholstered bed in your favourite fabric colour. This looks great, gives you handy storage options, and lets you add those special finishing touches that make a space feel like home. Don’t forget to look for oneof-a-kind or antique pieces—they bring such character and charm! Mixing these unique finds with your existing decor will create a beautifully balanced and harmonious environment.

Use Soft Lighting

Your bedroom lighting should feel cozy and relaxed. Soft, warm lights create an inviting atmosphere. Layer di erent sources like bedside lamps and sconces for balance. Position lights thoughtfully to illuminate key areas without harsh shadows. Emphasizing soft lighting transforms your

bedroom into a soothing retreat for unwinding after a long day.

Embrace Natural Fibres

Natural fibre mattresses o er comfort and sustainability. Made from organic cotton, natural latex, and wool, they provide a breathable, hypoallergenic surface. Unlike synthetic options, they lack harmful chemicals, fostering a healthier sleeping environment. Durable, these mattresses retain their shape and comfort for years. Choosing one enhances your sleep and reflects your commitment to eco-friendly living!

Ensure Quality Over Quantity

Designing your bedroom can be fun! Choose pieces that blend quality craftsmanship with timeless style. Opt for sturdy materials like hardwood or metal for wonderful detailing and smooth finishes not found in mass-produced options. A crafted wooden bed frame or custom wardrobe can become focal points, enhancing the room's charm. By prioritizing quality over quantity, you’ll create a luxurious and inviting retreat for relaxation!

November Trends

As we approach the end of 2024, the world of interior design continues to evolve, reflecting not only aesthetic preferences but also the shifting dynamics of lifestyles, sustainability, and technology. November typically marks a transitional period where cosy Autumn elements blend into the upcoming holiday season. Here are some of the hottest interior design trends to watch for this November.

Embracing Earthy Tones

The shift towards natural elements is more pronounced than ever, with earthy tones such as terracotta, olive green, and warm beige becoming increasingly popular. These colours create a calm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for the cooler months. Expect to see these hues in paint, upholstery, and decorative accents, making spaces feel grounded and serene.

Layered Textures

Layering textures continues to be a significant trend this year. Combining materials like soft woollen throws, chunky knits, and woven rattan adds depth and warmth to interiors. Look for a mix of fabrics in cushions, throws, and rugs to create a cosy, inviting environment. We love the khaki throw from Norfolk Luxury Furniture. Perfect to snuggle up with in the cold and wintery evenings.

Gardening

with November

Tom Strowlger

arrives and with it comes the last month of meteorological autumn. The clocks have changed meaning our gardens have much less daylight and cooler temperatures. This is the last month to get our gardens winter ready, so let’s put on our warm outdoor clothing and get our gardening tools out. The main gardening job for November is to do a tidy up in readiness for the dormant winter season.

Put a nice thick later of mulch over the topsoil to suppress any weeds and very importantly protect plant roots from the cold.

The garden has a much slower feel about it, it’s lacking in colour, damper, cooler and shadier. We can do a little something about the lack of colour, we can add some seasonal floral colour to brighten up our gardens. The best plants for a little late autumn and winter floral colour are Cyclamens, Viola, Winter Pansies and Primroses. They are winter hardy and can be planted into pots, containers, tubs, beds and borders. To plan ahead, we can plant out tulip and allium bulbs this month for beautiful flowers in springtime.

The garden will have its fair share of brown leaves settling into corners, borders and beds and on the lawn grass. The fallen golden leaves look amazing as a seasonal feature but unfortunately if they are left to lay over winter they will cause the lawn to go patchy and plants to become smothered. We should rake the leaves up and compost them to be used

as mulch on the beds and borders in the future.

It’s time for some last minute lawn grass care in readiness for the dark months of wintertime. We should edge our lawns as it will make our borders and beds neat and tidy. The lawn should be aerated at this time of year, to allow air to the roots. We should ideally spike the lawn by hand using our garden fork and create as many holes as we can, this will keep our lawn aerated. The lawn should be cut on the very highest cutting setting at this time of year as longer grass is healthier grass, and should not be cut again until springtime of next year.

The soil in borders and beds can become compacted after summertime and a turn of the topsoil with a spade or fork can bring a refreshed look back. You can also put a nice thick layer of mulch over the topsoil to suppress any weeds and very importantly protect plant roots from the cold and freezing weather of wintertime.

November is a cosy month, summed up by myself as being outside in the cooler air, gently

gardening away for a good few hours and then enjoying a hot drink and a favourite biscuit or two as a reward. November feels like a defining line in the gardening calendar, we look back on our successes and look forward to what we want to plant next year. So while the sun is setting that much earlier in the day grab a pencil and notepad and get drawing, writing and planning your future garden.

November

TOP TIPS

• Plant tulip and allium bulbs in welldrained soil

• Move outdoor pots into sheltered areas of the patio and garden

• Fork any waterlogged patches in the lawn

• Stay off rain soaked and frosty lawns

• Check the bonfire for any hibernating wildlife

Barry Jones is a highly-skilled Audiologist with over 15 years in the profession.

At Broadland Hearing Care we pride ourselves on understanding your needs and take our time to get to know you, so that we can o er you a solution that complements your lifestyle.

Able Community Care has been in the same family for four decades and now provides live-in care services throughout the UK.

Since 1980 we have provided care and have met with thousands of families who are seeking an alternative to moving into a residential care home. Meeting people inevitably leads, either at the time of an assessment or even years later, to questions for which people are looking for answers.

Information around all aspects of care is available but the road to finding out, especially at a time of crisis, about specific factors can be difficult and stressful. Able Community Care receives calls and emails on a regular basis with people asking if we can help with their search for information.

Recently these questions have been asked of us...

Question: – I was told by a friend that as I am a pensioner I can have a free, fire/gas safety check in my home. I live in Norfolk and would like to know if this is correct?

Answer: Yes, the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service offers free home fire safety checks for:

• People over the age of 65

• People who are disabled and would find it difficult to react to a fire in their home.

ask Angela

your questions...

• People who need care or support, have reduced mobility or who have mental health issues.

Call your local fire station to arrange a safety visit if you are eligible. Other County brigades will offer similar schemes.

Question: An elderly neighbour whom I have known for many years has a home which is full of, simply, everything. When younger we used to laugh about why she hoarded, but now it has become a health hazard, difficult to get from room to room, to clean and she won’t let me try to help to make it less so or help to tidy and clean. How can I help, there are no close family members?

Answer: Hoarding is considered a health problem when it causes significant distress or interferes with daily life. The NHS has a website which gives advice and options. Visit Hoarding Disorder NHS. You can then look at the options suggested on behalf of your neighbour.

Question: The local bus going through our village is likely to have its timetable reduced so getting to the shops or the surgery will become more difficult. What voluntary transport options are there to help?

Answer: There are several options which can help in Norfolk and are replicated in other counties. For example:

• Travel Norfolk Car Scheme

• Community Car Scheme, West Norfolk.

• Dial – a - Ride (can be booked in advance)

• Door to Door.
