Evan Johnson focuses on the art of portrait photography MATT ANDERSON EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM

“I’ve seen estimates that almost four billion pictures are taken every day, but how many of those will we have, let alone cherish, 50 years from now?” says local Marine photographer Evan Johnson. Hoping to capture the essence of portrait photography, Johnson is holding a “pop-up” studio in the Judd Street Exchange owned by Mary Jo Van Dell above the Marine General Store until the middle of December. Johnson grew up in Minneapolis, but has been living in Marine for the last 15 years. He taught film and video production earlier in his life, but admits that photography is something that has always called to him. “The thing that’s always kind of captured me is

MinuteEarth presents ‘Science and Stories About our Awesome Planet’ in Marine MATT ANDERSON EDITOR@COUNTRYMESSENGER.COM

Creating a YouTube channel is not a difficult thing to do today. But, building a channel about science with more than two million subscribers is an accomplishment to say the least. That’s what co-founders Henry Reich, Alex Reich, and

Marine resident Peter Reich have done with the channel MinuteEarth. Alex and Peter will be coming to the Marine Village Hall on November 21 for their event, “Science and Stories about our Awesome Planet.” “MinuteEarth is a YouTube channel that my father, Peter, my brother, Henry, and I

started back in 2013,” says co-founder Alex Reich. “Our goal is to make videos that the world’s foremost expert on the subject could find valuable, and that simultaneously a five year old could enjoy. So, that way we have viewers that are experts, and viewers that range from five year olds to 95 year olds.”

MinuteEarth covers a wide variety of scientific topics in hundreds of videos from “Why Rivers Curve” to “How to Survive a Lightning Strike” that have garnered more than 250 million views. These videos are relatively short, but highly informative with simple and SEE CHANNEL, PAGE 2

nitrates to all participants who pre-register at least one week in advance. The workshop will be held at Hugo City Hall. Groundwater provides 100% of the drinking water in Washington County and 75% of all drinking water statewide. In most parts of the county, groundwater is still clean and abundant enough to support local communities. But in some places, aquifers have been contaminated by industry and agriculture. In other locations, we are using groundwater more

photography,” he says. “If you think about film, it’s 30 frames per second – audio and picture- but as I’ve gotten older I’ve loved the idea of splitting that apart into just the visual and just one image.” There is artistry to stripping down video to capture one single moment that Johnson is trying to convey in his current “pop-up” studio in Marine. His focus in this project is portrait photography. What may seem like standard picture-taking tells much more of a story, according to Johnson. “We wanted to create a space where we could create what I call ‘intentional portraits.’” He said, “For me, the philosophy is that we live in this world where most people’s pictures are like this,” taking
