Little Free Library dedicated at Gammelgården The folk singers AppleJak, comprised of siblings Erik and Kayla Mack and their cousin Julia Kocon of New Brighton, performed at the dedication of Gammelgården Museum’s Little Free Library last Wednesday. The Macks and Kocon are the great nephew and nieces of David Monson, in whose honor the library was dedicated. The trio has been singing together since they were children. Currently, all college students with many miles between them, they enjoyed reuniting to sing at the dedication and continued their performance at that evening’s farmers market. The name ”AppleJak” is a nod to Kayla’s favorite horse, Jak.

Hay Lake Museum hosts ninth annual beer tasting

Access to the north leg of eastbound Highway 97 from Highway 61 closed on Sat, June 11. The closure is needed so crews can finish the north roundabout.

Access there will reopen when school starts up again in the fall of 2016.

The reconstruction of highways 61 and 97 in Forest Lake is progressing nicely, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The new look of the two intersections is beginning to take shape.

This summer, MnDOT will continue to work on constructing the roundabouts, building the school driveway, reconstructing Hwy 97 and Hwy 61 and finishing up the pedestrian bridge and trails.

This $10.1 million project aims to improve traffic flow and safety as well as improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities in the area. For more information about the project, visit mndot.gov/metro/projects/ hwy61and97.

Scandia woman seriously injured

Suzanne Lundgren, Scandia, was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale last Wednesday after sustaining serious injuries in a car crash. According to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol, at about 7:40 p.m., Lundgren was approaching

Highway 95 from the east on a private roadway when a northbound Ford pick-up truck travelled into the ditch, broadsiding Lundgren’s Jeep on the driver’s side.

Both vehicles were overturned.

The driver of the Ford received non-life threatening injuries. No alcohol was detected in his system.

An update on Lundgren’s status

was not available at press time, but no fatality had been reported.

Though little is known about the circumstances leading to the crash, the incident raises questions about the safety of that access point and future access to the nearby Crystal Springs Scientific and Natural Area, for which an official parking area has not yet been established.

Forest land marked for protection

The beer is just a part of it, as the tasting will consist of food from the Scandia-Marine Lions Club and snacks from Dot’s Homestyle Pretzels. Attendees will be able to take home their commemorative glass from Opinion Brewing Co. Entertainment will be supplied by the Capital City Wind Ensemble & Hammerschlagen.

A local craft beer web show, “Taproom Travelers,” will be shooting a bonus episode at the beer tasting. These men travel the Midwest with cameras to speak to the people behind the making of craft beer.

“Taproom Travelers” will also speak about the making of their web show and the importance of craft beer in Minnesota.

Admission to the event is $15 per person and participants must be 21 years or older. All proceeds from this event go directly to the Washington County Historical Society.

In addition, there will be a silent auction that includes items from Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Orchestra, Water Street Inn, Guthrie Theater, River Moon Coffee and more from all over Minnesota and Wisconsin.

As the Twin Cities metro area continues to expand, increasing pressure on natural resources, local government officials are working with the Minnesota Land Trust to protect over 1000 acres of undeveloped land in May Township.

The Warner Nature Center and Wilder Forest have been managed for decades by nonprofit, conservation-minded organizations, but no legal protections exist for the land. In recent years, as the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation announced it intended to shed its wilderness property, the future of the land became less certain.

The land, which the May board calls the Carnelian Creek Corridor, has been zoned as “conservancy” for decades. It serves as habitat for rare and threatened wildlife, and the Warner property includes an easement for the future Gateway State Trail extension.

But board members are “keenly aware the potential exists for a request to rezone these lands for perhaps any use one might imagine, such as housing or gravel mining,” according to a June 2 letter Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council (LSOHF).

“The protection of these lands through conservation easements will be a major step toward ensuring this does not happen.”

Through stakeholder discussions over the past year, a project concept emerged that would use the county’s Land and Water Legacy Program funds and non-county funding through LSOHF to preserve up to 1,430 acres with conservation easements.

“It is critical to take the important step of legally assuring these lands are protected in perpetuity,” read the May Town Board’s letter.

The county and Minnesota Land Trust staff have completed a proposal to the state LSOHF, under which the two entities would co-hold an easement. A grant proposal was submitted May 26 to LSOHF for the 2018 grant cycle.

The funding does not come with requirements to allow hunting on the land – a concern with a previous proposal that was ultimately rejected because of children’s programming at the nearby Warner Nature Center.

The LSOHF committee will review proposals and make recommendations for funding later this summer. If the proposal is awarded, funds will be available beginning July 1, 2017.

Since the sexual activity took place in Washington County, the county attorney’s office issued the complaint even though Foster was in the State of Washington during this period.

Ali commented, “It is gratifying that Foster will be behind bars for a significant period of time so that he cannot perpetrate similar coercive sexual relationships with young girls.”

Orput stated, “Our office is committed to protect, as well as we can, juvenile victims in sex cases. This has been a consistent message that we have sent to sexual predators: ‘Stay away from our children!’”

Students from Scandia Elementary IB World School recently took on a project to educate their classmates about the monarch butterfly and its dwindling food source, the milkweed plant.

Peace Team students received milkweed seeds from the Monarch Society in Minneapolis through a grant from Pat Collins of the St. Croix River Association.

The students went to the prairie behind Scandia Elementary and planted milkweed and other native flower seeds to attract butterflies and pollinators.

Following that experience, the students went into each of their school’s classrooms and read age-appropriate books about monarchs to fellow students.

Each student also received a packet of milkweed seeds to take home to plant. The Scandia Peace Team is advised by Molly Nemec.

The great squirrel wars

S

unday is Father's Day, a time to give appreciation to dad, father, pops — whatever term you use to describe the paterfamilias, the male head of the household.

I have written numerous accounts, some slightly exaggerated, about my late father, Arved Stangl (aka “The Chief”).

For Father's Day, I'd like to share one of the epic tales in our family folklore.

The Chief was a no nonsense fellow, a hard working man who really valued his spare time. He worked long days as a mechanic in the Chevy garage in our hometown in Iowa and had six children Publisher with my mother.

We lived in an older home that Tom Stangl had two bedrooms upstairs and an improvised bedroom downstairs.

It was a bit crowded, but we made it work.

Our house was about six feet lower that the rest of the homes on our street, and we had to walk up three steps to get to the sidewalk. We had three black walnut trees on the property line with our neighbors. The trees provided shade for our home, but were hated by the neighbors for the mess the walnuts created.

And then there were the squirrels.

It is natural to assume that three walnut trees would attract squirrels. The squirrels would shuck the walnuts, crack the nuts and dispose of the waste by chucking it at our home.

I kid you not. It was a constant thing, and it seemed that the chattering of the squirrels after they threw their garbage at our home seemed like laughter.

This annoyed the Chief and he often cursed the squirrels. One of the trees had a branch that would provide access to our roof. We discovered that the squirrels had chewed their way into our attic.

This meant war to the Chief, and he prepared to fight the invaders to the death.

He was able to patch the hole with some tin, but we could hear the scurrying of the squirrels above our heads at night.

The attic was a place no one dared to go in our home, but the Chief, being a man of action, bravely went into the attic with some borrowed rat traps to kill the invaders in his home.

It sounded like a good idea at the time.

The squirrels didn't go for the traps, which greatly annoyed the Chief. Emulating his wartime commander “Dugout” Douglas MacArthur, the Chief deployed more traps and checked to make sure more squirrels could not gain access to the attic, using the rickety wood ladder that we used to change out the storm windows.

The squirrels continued to scurry above, disrupting the Chief's slumber. Eventually, the scurrying stopped.

The Chief would often comment that he liked dealing with the public less than he liked the squirrels, adding “and I HATE the damn squirrels.”

It was a good thing that he worked on cars and trucks.

We never knew if they starved to death or got out.

After my parents died, the house was torn down. I was told by the man who bought the property that they found some small animal skeletons in the attic.

Yes, the Chief won the great squirrel wars, as they came to be known.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR DFL needs dose of reality Apparently one should have a healthy sense of humor or risk being much more satirical than I would like to be.

After reading Mr. Ken Martin’s (chairman of the DFL) letter to the editor in the June 1 edition

of the Country Messenger, it seems to me that he lives in a world devoid of reality. I have to believe that, considering his position, he is just spouting the Party line.

Now let’s get real. If we are ever able to cross the divide that exists between the two major parties, placing ALL of the blame on any one party

is a Greek tragedy of government irresponsibility.

It was not all that long ago that each party had the opportunity for one party rule. Each of them squandered this opportunity. Now, with the perspective of history, neither experience was gratifying. The DFL group saw to it that we

were over-taxed (overcharged as it is) for government, hence the $900 million surplus Mr. Martin refers to. Mr. Martin should spend more time encouraging his group to be more fiscally responsible.

Good grief! There is a $900,000,000 surplus.

Land of Lake Trout

S

ummer vacations are upon us and one of the most popular destinations here in the Great Northland is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Over a million acres of pristine waters, beautiful wild vistas, picturesque rock formations, pines that reach to the sky draw people from around the world who want to experience wilderness on their own. It’s a place on the Minnesota/Canadian Border where wildlife abounds, deer, moose, and bear with the call of the loon echoes over the water from Wild River dawn to dusk.

My son Josh and Megan, his wife of Trails just a year left yesterday for almost a week of paddling, picture taking Jim Bennett and fishing. Of course walleye are on

the menu, smallmouth bass are targets as are pike on a fly rod, and the fish of the North, the lake trout.

Known as the fish of the deep, lakers can be a hard fish to catch.

To make his trip with Megan have more of a chance for success I queried Eric Duffy, a man who has spent more time in the BWCA than just about anyone I know. One reason is that their family cabin is on one side of a wilderness road near Crane Lake and the BWCA is on the other. Here are some thoughts Eric shared with me.

chool is out and like every year, we need to put some kitchen rules in place. This year, I thought I would do things differently. Last year, you said I liked things “too” clean and I’m unreasonable.

So, I am going to try and learn to be like you—follow your unspoken rules.

I think the summer will go well if I accept your boyish food habits. We’ll get alone great, if I learn to leave the crumbs and smears on the kitchen counter. You know from past years how unreasonable I was about freeze pops and Popsicle sticks. I know that it was very unreasonable to ask you to put them in the trash. I can see you were feeding your pet ants. I will remind you when their food source is getting low.

Also, I’ve changed my mind on having pets in your room. Ants really aren’t that much trouble—they’re very quiet—nice choice.

Lastly, since you like to eat a lot, I’ve decided to give

you control of the budget and the menu. I struggle with trying to make the budget and healthy meals mix. You’re 15, 17, and 23, a combined age of 55. Three heads are better than one! You guys have got this! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Rapalas are a great lure and a favorite of mine for many fish, but getting them deep enough and keeping them in the laker zone is something you have address. Eric knows how.

“Use a ½ to 1 oz. keel sinker with a #7 shad rap or a regular floating rap in blue and silver, black and silver or gold and black to get the Rapalas down in the laker zone.

You don’t need to buy all of the other colors; these are the ones that fish like. The other ones are the colors fishermen like.”

Eric also knows that lake trout can go deep depending on the time of year and water temperatures dictate where lake trout will hold.

“Vertical jigging with a large jig head and a 4 inch white Berkeley Power Bait minnow, not Gulp, is good bait. I like to use a 3/8 to ½ oz. jig with a white twister tail as my catch all when I go into a new lake when I don’t know exactly what’s in the lake.” Go to the Minnesota DNR website, click their lake finder to check out what’s in the lake, fish surveys, if done and even a hydrographic lake maps showing contours to help you choose your fishing routes.

Eric and I agree that this time of year, especially this year with the unusually cold and wet spring, that lakers will be found in 30-40 feet of water. Another way I get lures that deep is by using a Dipsey Diver, a small disc that when set takes

any lure to your desired depth and keeps it there by the amount of line you let out. I use a very light trolling spoon used for salmon or a light Doctor Spoon in blue and silver when fishing this way.

Duffy also mentioned that occasionally in lakes that have dark colored water due to tannic acid resembling root beer, he likes the blue and silver color and gold raps.

I might even use one with a little rattle built in or attached or one that glows to help the lakers hone in on your bait.

She frequently works with realtors and local governments to get regulatory information and details to prospective homebuyers and as a refresher to those who already call the river valley home.

“Right now there is no formal process in which new land owners find out about the river way regulations which have a lot of building restrictions and things like that,” Warren said. “So we just want to make sure that people, when they are moving to the area, understand what they can and can’t do

Financial Focus Give Your Children the Gift of (Financial) Knowledge

It’s almost Father’s Day. If you’re a dad with young children, you can expect some nice homemade cards and maybe even a baseball cap. But, of course, your greatest reward is spending time with your kids and watching them grow. In return, you can give them a gift – the gift of knowledge. Speci¿cally, in the months and years ahead, teach them the ¿nancial skills that can help make their lives easier and more rewarding.

For starters, encourage your children to become savers. You can do this in a couple of different ways. First, set a good example. You might explain to your kids that you want to buy a certain item, but you are waiting for it to go on sale. Or, if it’s a particularly big-ticket item, like an ultra high-de¿nition television, tell your children that you simply can’t afford it now, but that you are putting away some money each week until you can. You might even make a chart showing your progress.

Another way to help your children become better savers is to provide them with a monetary incentive. To illustrate: For every dollar they put into a “piggy bank” or an actual savings account, tell them you’ll put in, say, 50 cents. They are likely to be pleased and excited by how much faster their money grows with your contribution, and they may well become more motivated to save. Furthermore, you’ll be giving them a valuable lesson for later on in life, when they work for a business that offers to match their contributions to a 401(k) or other retirement plan. Unfortunately, many young people, upon taking on their ¿rst “career” jobs, either under-contribute to their retirement plans or ignore them completely – thereby making it more likely that, later on in their working lives, they will have to come up with much bigger sums each year to accumulate enough resources for a comfortable retirement.

Learning to save is certainly important – but children should also learn about investing. To help get your children interested in becoming investors, point out that they can actually own shares of companies with which they are already familiar – the companies that make the games they play, the movies they watch and the food they eat. In fact, you could even simulate the investment process by letting them choose a stock and then follow it. To make the results more tangible, use “play” money to represent an initial investment, and add or subtract to the pile to track the ups and downs of the real stock. You might even explain some of the reasons for the stock’s movements; for example, if you and your child are following the stock of an entertainment company, and that company produces a blockbuster movie that leads to sequels, spinoffs and merchandise tie-ins, you can point out how these developments have pushed up the company’s stock price.

You might also explain that while these short-term price movements are interesting – and maybe even fun – to follow, investing is actually a long-term endeavor, and the best investors often hold stocks for many years before selling them.

By following these suggestions, you can help your children acquire good ¿nancial habits – and seeing them put these skills to good use can provide you with many happy Father’s Days in the future.

Part 4: Day trips

A minor tragedy befell the Sans Souci II. Shortly after my last trip on the Namekagon River, I loaned my kayak out to my brother-in-law for use in the Adventure Triathlon in Grantsburg.

He, and it, performed admirably amid some choppy, windy conditions on Phantom Lake. But as luck would have it one of the foot pegs broke. So, while the replacement parts were on order, I saw it as an opportunity to change my mode of transportation and enlist my tandem paddling partner, Jaime, on a couple of day trips.

Namekagon: Springbrook to Trego Promoted by the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway staff as one of its “Recommended Paddles,” this stretch of water is easily the one with which I am most familiar, though St. Croix Falls-to-Osceola is quickly gaining ground.

If you’re keeping score, I left off last time at Big Bend Landing (N45.0).

Wanting to add a couple rapids and a little time to our float, we chose to put in at Springbrook Landing (N49.9) instead, overlapping a bit from my last column.

Since first learning to paddle last summer, Jaime has become a fairly competent bow paddler. Tandem canoes are sometimes called “divorce boats” and I can understand why. A truly good tandem paddling team

needs to cooperate and communicate well. As with most such things, I’d say Jaime and I get along pretty good in a tandem canoe.

Other than hitting some bumps in the rocky rapids just below Springbrook, we got our sea legs under us quickly and our paddle was leisurely and uneventful. We stopped for lunch at the group campsite at N44.8 and set up my hammock for a short lounge.

of this segment of river and the number of tubing outfitters along it. As fond as my childhood memories of tubing and canoeing along that stretch are, these days I much prefer paddling a quiet, unpopulated river.

We took out at Trego Town Park Landing (N37.0), as I have so many times, and had dinner with my father on our way back to Osceola.

Apple River confluence Better known for its contributions to the float parks and music festivals of Somerset, Wis., the Apple River joins the St. Croix River across from the Arcola Sandbar, maybe two miles upstream from the Soo Line High Bridge.

While not technically part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, this last stretch of the Apple caught my eye recently and, after researching it a bit, we decided it would make a fun day trip.

We weren’t wrong. In its last mile or

two above the confluence, northwest of Somerset off County Road I, the Apple pours over an Xcel Energy hydroelectric dam, then winds through riffles and rapids in the Apple River Canyon State Natural Area. The east-west canyon features 100-foot cliffs on either side and, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, has some unique plant communities that take advantage of the abundant shade.

We parked along County Road I and, assisted by some local tubers, portaged the canoe down the long hill by the dam. Note: the portage was not the best part of this trip.

After putting in, we paddled upstream a bit and then did a quick tour of the hydro plant before entering the first rapids. The water was clear and cool and just as quickly as we entered the canyon, it seemed, we were exiting into the St. Croix.

Instead of paddling the very last bend of the Apple, we split off through a seam in the grassy marsh and headed north through the backwater on the Wisconsin side into the St. Croix Islands State Natural Area. The upstream paddling wasn’t as easy as I had imagined it would be, but luckily we didn’t have far to go. We had stashed our pick-up vehicle on a small piece of state land off Rice Lake Road and we arrived at it in no time.

Overall, this small stretch of the Apple is somewhat of a hidden gem. If you can stand the portage, it’s definitely worth seeing, though one might consider making it a longer, easier trip by arranging a downstream pick-up.

For most, the story of economic recovery is fiction

I

f you’ve been hearing a lot about economic recovery without seeing much change in your bank account, you’re not alone.

A story last week by Christopher Rugaber of the Associated Press told “a tale of two Americas: the one that national averages indicate has all but recovered from the Great Recession and the one lost in the statistics.”

Wealth associated with the economic recovery is flowing disproportionately to the already rich, Rugaber explained, skewing the data and telling an economic story Editor that most of us aren’t experiencSuzanne Lindgren ing.

Although there are signs of economic improvement in the St. Croix Valley, it seems many are still feeling the recession’s pinch. As it turns out, that’s the norm.

“The national numbers aren't capturing the experience of many typical people in typical communities,” he wrote.

While incomes for the “average” U.S. household rose 0.7 percent from 2008 to 2014 after taking inflation into account, most people saw an actual decrease in income, according to Rugaber. The nation’s richest 10 percent drove the average up as the poorest 20 percent felt a 6 percent drop in income.

And although job creation reports have cast numbers in an optimistic glow – 200,000 new jobs a month on average since 2011 – many of those are in relatively low paying industries and are more likely to be part time or temporary than the pre-recession jobs they’re supposed to be replacing.

“By the end of 2015, the nation still had fewer middle-income jobs than it did before the recession,” wrote Rugaber, citing research from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce.

those who feel that their boat somehow missed the rising economic tide. Most of us are still waiting for it to come in, many working overtime or a side job to help pay the mortgage or rent.

Rugaber links the economic disconnect to the unexpected success of the presidential campaigns of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, saying they’ve been fueled by frustration and anxiety of the electorate.

He’s not the only one making that claim. In May, the New York Times reported findings that job losses led voters to favor either Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders and “areas hardest hit by trade shocks were much more likely to move to the far right or the far left politically.”

Both Trump and Sanders have spoken out against Wall Street and corporate ties to the Republican and Democratic parties. Whether right or left, most Americans seem to agree that the corporate agenda is not serving them.

Although Sanders might drop out of the race soon – Hillary Clinton was declared the presumptive Democratic nominee last week – he has influenced the tone of the election, leading Clinton to present herself as anti-corporate even as she courts Wall Street for funding.

People are looking for change, for alternatives to the corporate status quo. Whether we find it in the next president remains to be seen.

In the meantime, there’s a growing effort to get big money out of politics. Locally, it’s being led by two residents of Osceola Township through a national organization called United to Amend. They hope others in the St. Croix Valley (including Minnesota) will join them in getting local municipalities – via November vote – to officially support overturning the Supreme Court’s “Citizens United vs. FEC” decision through a Constitutional amendment.

Are there other ways we can begin to take back control of politics and the economy, if not nationally, then locally?

Spotlight on Area Businesses When Bill and Rene Waddell wanted to retire, they refused to leave Bill’s Auto Body in the hands of just anyone. Through a referral, they learned of a team of siblings running Fairway Collision Center in Vadnais Heights and, as it turned out, the timing couldn’t have been better.

Pam Caruth, Kevin Lund and Carey Lund — the latter two are identical twins — had been waiting for a good opportunity to expand. The siblings had grown into the Vadnais Heights body shop, taking over for their parents at the turn of the millennium. The Lund brothers’ sons, 21-year-old Connor Lund and 22-year-old Kollin Lund, have recently joined the family business as estimators.

“It’s been a family-run business,” said Caruth. “Our parents started it in 1975 and we took over 15 years ago. We’d thought about expanding to another location, but we wanted the right fit as well. Bill’s has a great reputation in Forest Lake. We run our businesses in a similar way.”

In preparation for the changeover, the Waddells and the siblings discussed and planned for months, checking along the way to make sure it was right for everyone. After the sale was official, the Waddells stayed on for a month, smoothing the final leg of the transition in early 2015.

Caruth said the shop would continue to be called Bill’s Auto Body for a while.
