Zavoral solar farm recommended BY KYLE WEAVER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
The Zavoral Gravel Mine looks like it will eventually become the Zavoral Solar Farm. The Scandia Planning Commission recommended approval of a conditional use per-
mit last week for a solar farm to be installed on the mine property east of the Highway 97 and Highway 95 intersection. After hearing nearly a dozen public comments May 3, the commission recommended attaching more than two

Many are a bit baffled when they find out Caroline Little, a French teacher, co-moderates the Experimental Vehicle Team at St. Thomas Academy, the Mendota Heights high school where she teaches. “Most people look at me and wonder how on earth I got involved in this extracurricular activity,” Little said with a laugh. But she doesn’t find it strange. Under the guidance of her father, an inventor and physicist, the Marine native grew up with science. And a stint at Dunrovin Christian Brothers Retreat Center offered her a little practical experience. “I took care of the pool and did maintenance at Dunrovin,” said Little. “And I started tinkering with engines then, mostly on their mowers.”
But the clincher was quite possibly pure chance. About eight years ago, she was assigned to a new classroom. It happened to sit next door to the Experimental Vehicle Team moderator’s room – in other words, team headquarters. “One day the team was building a motorcycle through the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam grant,” Little explained. Her interest was piqued. She chaperoned the team as they competed in an electric-solar bike and car race seven years ago, and she was hooked. This spring, the team won an international competition for its lithium-battery-powered car. Running at the equivalent of 1,750 miles per gallon, the car took first in the UrbanConcept battery-electric division of Shell’s Eco-marathon Americas. The UrbanConcept category is notorious for its difficulty, said Little. The students must
make their own motor controller – versus buying one – a “very, very challenging” feat, Little explained. And the cars have to be “street legal,” with a working windshield wiper, headlights, brake lights, taillights, a five-point harness seatbelt and a roll bar. “Not that you’d want to drive it around,” said Little. “It’s made of carbon fiber and polyurethane foam. But you could.” The Eco-marathon is a qualifier for Shell’s Drivers’ World Championship competition. In July, the team will head to London to compete against Eco-marathon winners from Asia and Europe. “We’re very excited to represent the U.S. and Minnesota in London,” said Little. It’s a challenge they couldn’t have prepared for without the help of sponsors, led by Power Systems Research, she

Log House Landing’s boat launch is slated for pavement this fall. The City of Scandia and the Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed District (CMSCWD) approved plans last Wednesday for a 12-foot-wide reinforced concrete ramp leading down to a concrete-and-cable launch. Strategically placed rocks would line the sides, acting as a buffer to protect SEE LANDING, PAGE 2
