Our cover this month celebrates the search for the perfect tomato. It shows the increasingly popular ‘Sweet Cluster’ variety and while there are hundreds of varieties from marble-sized grape or cherry tomatoes, to juicy salad tomatoes, meaty paste tomatoes, and huge, sweet, beefsteak tomatoes they all share the same hope of growers to find tomato perfection this summer.

March date for alpine garden show The South West Alpine Garden Society Show is being held at RHS Garden Rosemoor, Torrington, on Saturday, 24th March from 10am to 4pm The show is organised by the Exeter group of the Alpine Garden Society. It is combined with an excellent plant sale with nurseries attending from all over the south west of England and offering a wide range of good and often unusual plants for sale. Normal garden admission and free for RHS Members.

Cornwall’s ‘Garden of the Year’ re-opens The historic garden at Caerhays Castle has re-opened with new additions. There’s a new Isla Rose Plantation, opened by Roy Lancaster on 17th March. Plans for the two acre site include the introduction of more tender plants. Mediterranean and subtropical shrubs that have never been grown at Caerhays before and the new clearing will also preserve the view of the sea. Caerhays gardens will be open until 17th June. www.caerhays.co.uk

GARDEN HOUSE TOUR WITH HEAD GARDENER There is the chance to join Nick Haworth, head gardener on a detailed tour of the ten-acre Garden House on the edge of Dartmoor in April. The garden is home to a wonderful variety of woodlanders and on Wednesday, April 18th you can learn all about them. You’ll spend plenty of time in the garden and will have opportunities to ask questions and learn about how to succeed with these plants. Rosemoor hosts national rhododendron show Lovers of rhododendrons have a special treat on Saturday, 21st April and Sunday 22nd April when RHS Rosemoor hosts the RHS National Rhododendron Show. This national show has over 60 classes covering all types of rhododendrons, as well as trade and advice stands plus magnificent displays of magnolias and camellias too. Past competitors have included Exbury Gardens, Caerhays Castle, The Savile Garden, Trewithin, Marwood Hill and several National Trust properties in the South West including Glendurgan and Trelissick. Food foraging themed walks Slapton Ley Field Centre is offering those interested in foraging for food a themed walk on two dates - Sunday, 8th April and Sunday, 15th April. It’s a chance to taste your way through the National Nature Reserve, searching for edible plants of the hedgerow and woodland. It’s a free event and booking is essential on 07967497624. Build your own beehive course NT Knightshayes is offering the chance to build and decorate your own beehive to put in your garden.
