Aucklandboatiefined$16,000forhittingdiver,leavinghimwithhead
AnAucklandboatiehasbeenorderedtopay$16,000afterhittingadiver,leavinghimwithaconcussionand cutstohishead.HewassentencedintheAucklandDistrictCourtundertheMaritimeTransportActfor operatingavesselinamannerwhichcausedunnecessarydangerorrisktoanotherperson.
TheYouthNationalswereheldforthefirsttimelastyear,andtheyarebackagainnext year.TheyareheldoverthetwoweekEasterschoolholidaystogivepeoplethebest opportunitytogetoutfishing.Thiswillbethe7th tothe22nd ofApril2023.Wewillbe holdingourfamilydaycompetitiononthe16th Aprilsothatanyofourjuniorstaking partinthenationalscanalsofishthiscompetition,alsoanyjuniormembertakingpart inthefamilydaycompetitionwillgetfreeentrytotheyouthnationalsincluded.

Environmental,iwiandrecreationalfishinginterestsintheHaurakiGulfarecelebratingtheMinister’s decisiontoclosetheCoromandelscallopfisheryindefinitely.
TheCoromandelscallopfisherystretchesfromLeigh,RodneyinthenorthtoMaketūintheBayofPlenty.
NgātiHeiledtheclosurewitharāhuiprohibitingtheharvestofscallopsontheeasternsideofthe CoromandelPeninsulain2020.Since2021a2-yeartemporaryclosurehasbeeninforce.
“NgātiHeiareoverjoyedtheMinisterofOceansandFisherieshasalignedwithiwiandcommunitywishesby closingthefisherytohelpitrebuild.Watchingthescallopsdisappearovertheyearshasbeenworrying, todaywecelebratethisdecision,”saysNgātiHeiRangatira,JoeDavis.
RecreationalfishersincludingtheNewZealandSportFishingCouncil,MercuryBayandTairuaSportFishing ClubssupportedtheCoromandelcommunitytoconductacitizensciencesurveyofscallopbedsinOpitoBay, inearly2021.Theresultsweresharedwithofficialsandthecommunity.
“It’sverypleasingtheMinisterhasactedonthelatestevidencethatshowsscalloppopulationsintheHauraki Gulfareatalltimelows.However,it’ssadthatthescallopbedshavealmostdisappearedbeforeactionis taken.Let’shopeFisheriesNewZealandismoreresponsivetocommunityconcernsinthefuture,”says TairuabasedNewZealandSportFishingCouncilVicePresidentWarrenMaher.
Since2020,LegaSeahasworkedwithHaurakiGulfiwiNgātiManuhiriandNgātiPāoainsupportingrāhuifor scallopsintheirrohe.LegaSeahasalsobeenanintegralpartoftheHaurakiGulfAllianceseekingtohave dredging,bottomtrawlingandDanishseiningbannedfromGulfwaters.
“LegaSeaisstokedthatarebuildplanisnowinplace.It’sgreatbecauseitmeansthescallopbedswillfinally getarestfromdredging.ThisisgoodfortheenvironmentandtheHaurakiGulfcommunitieswhohave workedsohardtoprotectthefisheryforfuturegenerations,”saysLegaSeaProjectLead,SamWoolford. TheOpitoBayRatepayersAssociationwasthefirstofmanyCoromandelgroupstosupportarestorationplan andtherāhuilaiddownbyNgātiHeiin2020.
“TheCoromandelcommunityandbusinessescametogetherin2020toinitiatethefirstscallopsurveyin OpitoBay.WewillbemonitoringprogresstoensureofficialsfollowthroughwiththeMinister’scommitment tosurveythescallopbedsinthenextthreeyears,”saysChrisSeverne,ChairmanofOpitoBayRatepayers Association.
ThisyearsClassicwasagreatweekendoffishing,withover300anglerscompeting.Good weatheronFridayandSaturdaysawmanyboatsoverthecoast,withlotsofthemlookingfor biggamefish.Sundayendedupasaharbouronlydayduetodeterioratingweather,but therewerestillplentyofboatsoutlookingtograbalastminutefish.Itwasahardfought competition,withmanyoftheresultsbeingveryclose-andacoupleofresultscamedown towhichfishwasweighedfirst.
