Gisborne Tatapouri SFC

No doubt you will all now be aware of the terrible incident that happened off the Gisborne coast. As a club we have sent the below letter to Gisborne Tatapouri Sport Fishing Club. We have also donated $1000 to the givealittle fundraising effort that has been set up for the families of those lost.

If you would like to make a personal donation you can use the link below.

Dear Gisborne Tatapouri Sports Fishing Club and families of the three men,

Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. May the fond memories of your loved ones bring you comfort and peace. Their passion for fishing and the camaraderie they shared with fellow club members will never be forgotten. May they rest in peace, and may their legacy live on in the hearts of all who knew them. With deepest sympathies, Counties Sport Fishing Club

Zombie Snapper

No, not a low budget horror film but an actual thing. Diseased snapper with milky bloodshot eyes and lack of flesh have been caught in the Kaipara Harbour and off the West Coast. Fisheries NZ are currently investigating and need our help.

If you catch a fish that fits this description please keep it fresh on ice, but DO NOT FREEZE the fish. Call the MPI pest reporting number 0800 80 99 66 and they will arrange to come and collect the fish from you.

The diseased "zombie" snapper have sunken, milky eyes, bones sticking out and a lack of mucus on their skin.

Grunter Hunter

This was another great competition, with over 240 anglers competing for the huge prize pool on offer. As well as the $3,000 top prize there were prizes on offer right down to 25th place. The forecast leading up to the day was not great, but the weather was better than expected. Top prize went to a massive 1.48 Kg gurnard, and the weight of the fish barely dropped under a kilo right down to 25th place. With the average weight being 0.79 Kg, there were certainly a lot of good fish weighed in.

Quite a few people in the results weighed fish of the same weight. In the case of more than one fish being weighed at the same weight the order that they were weighed in decides the order in the results. A good reason to be nice and early for the weigh in.

Why are Snapper Starving

LegaSea is stunned that Fisheries New Zealand is blaming the climate for snapper having "milky white flesh syndrome". Their latest report skips over last year's lab results that showed snapper were in a "state of chronic malnutrition". That testing found that tissue breakdown in snapper was attributed to a "prolonged period of starvation".

So, why are our most prolific fish species starving?

On the northeast coast there is a noticeable absence of baitfish in the water. Reports from Northland to East Cape confirm fears that there are fewer Jack mackerel. Areas relied on for holding baitfish are barren. Fishers report spending hours hunting bait rather than the prize kingfish.

Baitfish are an integral part of the food chain, sustaining finfish, birds and marine mammals. Successive State of our Gulf reports show that baitfish, including Jack and blue mackerel are the most commonly harvested species.

It's ludicrous to think we can keep purse seining day after day and expect the environment to keep producing the same amount of fish. And, it's well documented that scallop dredging, Danish seining and bottom trawling destroy seabed life.

After decades of dredging our scallop beds are closed, crayfish in the Hauraki Gulf are described as "functionally extinct", and after a century of bottom trawling there are no wild mussels left in the Marine Park. We cannot ignore that these outcomes are due to fishing and other human related pressures.

This is no longer just a Hauraki Gulf issue. Our initial work with NIWA in 2022 showed that catches of mushy, white flesh fish were concentrated within the inner Hauraki Gulf. However, recent online surveys of recreational fishers have indicated that affected fish are being caught in Northland, Bay of Plenty and areas along the west coast of the North Island.

LegaSea is concerned that a hardy species like snapper is now succumbing to a collapsing food chain, and that officials are dismissing the lack of bait fish in the water while ignoring the impacts of a century of destructive fishing methods. We would have expected a more constructive response from Fisheries New Zealand to this chronic issue.
