WehaveapproachedaprofessionalsecuritycompanytoupdateourCCTVequipment thatwasstolen.Theyhavecomebackwiththeirrecommendationsandatthelast committeemeetingitwasagreedthatwewouldgoaheadandgetthisinstalled.The workwillinvolvemovingtheelectricaldistributionboxinsideoneofthecontainersso itcannotbetamperedwith.TheCCTVrecordingequipmentwillalsobeinsidea container.Itwillbelinkedtotheinternetwithlivealertsbeingsentifanintruderis detectedandthevideofeedwillalsobeaccessibleonlinesowecancheckwhatis happeningifthereisanalertandevencommunicatewiththeintruders.Thisisa considerableinvestmentforus,butifitcanhelppreventfurtherdamageortheftfrom thegreensheditwillbeveryworthwhile.

Agoodfishingreelisabiginvestmentandifproperlylookedaftershouldgiveyouyearsof service,andhopefullycatchagoodmanyfish.Butbeingexposedtosaltwaterisaveryharsh environmentandifyoudon’tcareforyourreelsthentheymayletyoudownjustwhenyou hookthatfishofalifetime.HerewehaveaguidetoDIYreelmaintenance,andweevenhave threereelmaintenancekitstogiveawaytoclubmembers.

LargeLeverDrag Withwinterhavingwellandtrulyarrived,sotoohavethebluefin!Whilethefair-weather fishermenhaveputtheirrodsandreelsawayforthewinter,thebraveandadventurous‘Reel Men’recentlyheadedofftotheeastcoastinsearchoftheelusivesouthernbluefintuna. Leverdragreelsusedfortrollinghaveoneofthetoughestlivesanyreelcanhave.Constantly inthegunwale,withsaltwatersplashingoverthemandthesunbeatingdown–dryingthe saltwaterinamatterofminutes–andhoursawayfromfreshwaterandaclean.Thenthereis thepressureoninternalcomponentsoncehookedtoafish!Whilethesereelsarebuilttough, theyaren’tinvincible.Thatiswhykeepingupwithgeneralmaintenanceinbetweenservicesis essential.Withthisinmind,I’mgoingtogiveyousomeessentialtipstolookafteryourlarger leverdragreelsusingthe DeuthlonStarterKit tokeepthemhassle-freebetweenservices.

10 Forlargeleverdragreels,theDeuthloncastlube,ceramic,andhigh-speedbearingoilprovidedintheDeuthlon StarterKitcanbeusedtomaintainthefollowingparts.Deuthlondoesagenericreellubewhichcanalsobe usedforthefollowingareasatagreatpricepoint.

Step1: ApplyacoupleofdropsofDeuthlonOilatthebaseofthehandleshaftandhandleknob;turnthe handleknobtogettheoilseepingintoittherequiredspace.Thesereelsdonothavebearingsinthehandle butrequirelubricationtopreventsaltwaterintrusion,whichcausescorrosionandseizing.Afteroilingfor betterprotection,youcanmixasmallamountofDeuthlonSemiFluidGreaseandDeuthlonOiltoapplytothe openingbetweenthehandleandshaft.Thiswillactasafurtherbarriertopreventsaltwateringress.

•Handle •DragClicker •TwoSpeedMechanism •StrikeStopper DeuthlonSemiFluidGreasecanbeusedinthefollowingareas:

Step2: Removethetwoscrewscoveringthehandlecapwithasmallscrewdriver.Applyacoupleofdropsof oilbetweenthehandleknobandhandleshaft,andturnthehandleknob.Youcanthenuseasmallamountof theDeuthlonSemiFluidgreasetosealthisaccesspoint.Thisisanexcellentlightgreasethatwillmixwiththe oilovertimeandseepfurtherdownthehandleshaftwithoutcausingthehandletogumupandbecometight toturn.Whenreplacingthecapandscrewinginplace,donotover-tightenscrews.

•Handle •ReelSeat •Baseofthespoolbeforespooling

Step3: Ifyourreelhasatwo-speedfunction,youcanapplyacoupleofdropstothetwo-speedpinand plate.Clickingitinandoutofgearswillhelpseeptheoilinbetweentheplatesifyouwishtotakethisapart onsuchreelsasShimanoTLDandTiagrastoapplyacoatoflightgrease.

Step4: Apointoftenmissedwhenmaintainingalargeleverdragistheleverstoppoints.OnthisShimano TLD50Ashown,thereisoneatthefreespoolandoneatstrike.Saltwatercangetintothesepointsandthen dry,causingittobetoughtopressin.Applyafewdropsaroundtheedgeofthebuttonsandpressafew timestoseepin.

Doingthesesimplestepsoftencanbethedifferencebetweenastraightforwardserviceandacostlyrepair bill.TheDeuthlonStarterKitisasmallpricetopaytoincreasethelongevityofyourhard-earnedfishinggear.

Step5: Oppositethehandlesideofyourreel,you’llfindyourclickermechanism.Applyacoupleofdrops aroundtheswitchandslidebackandforth.Thesewillensureitiseasytoslideinfutureandprevent saltwaterfrompenetratingandthendryingout,causingaseizedsolidclicker.

HandyTips: #1-AcoatofDeuthlonSemiFluidgreasecanbeappliedtothebaseofthespoolbeforespoolingwithline. Thishelpspreventcorrosionwhensaltwatereventuallyseepsdownthroughtheline/sideofthespoolandsits foranextendedperiod.Morecriticalforpeopleusingthesereelsfordeepdrops,asamoresignificantamount ofwetlineisrewoundontothespool.Runwarm(notcold)wateroveryourspooltohelpbreakdownanysalt onyourline. #2 -IlearntthefollowingtrickfromTonyOrtonsomeyearsago;hehasagreatvideoofitonhisJourneyof aFishermansite.Byapplyingacoatingofgrease(inthiscaseDeuthlonSemiFluidGrease)onyourreelseat androd,thenplaceagreasedrectanglesectionofanti-slipmattinginbetweenthetwo.Thismattingis readilyavailableatmostmarineshops,commonlyusedondashboardsandtables.Thishelpstopreventyour reelfromseizingsolidontoyourrod.Howoftendoyouremoveyourgamereelsfromtherods?If,likeme, onlywhengettingitserviced!Foratrollingcombo,thatisquitealotoftimewithsaltwatercausingdamage. Bydoingthis,itmakesremovalabreeze!

•Anti-reverseswitch

Lightspinningreelsaregreatforsoft-baiting,lightjigging,andmypersonalfavourite:lightline straylining(don’tknockittillyoutryit).Theyarerenownedfortheirsmooth,light-handedturn. Whenservicingthistypeofreel,weusealightgreaseandtendtoleantowardsalightoil appliedinkeyareas,tokeepthehandlerotationsmoothandwithlittleresistance. Whileafullserviceinvolvesopeningupyourreelandshouldbedoneannuallybyaprofessional, someexternalcareathomecangoalongwaytokeepingitingoodconditionandpreventpart replacement. Forspingear,theDeuthlonCastLube–aceramicandhigh-speedbearingoil–canbeusedto maintainthefollowingparts: •Lineroller(oneofthemostcommonlyreplacedpartsduetoeasysaltwateringress)

Withoutmaintainingyourreel,youcangetcaughtoutonthedaywithyourhandlenotturning, yourlinerollerseized,oryourreelsoundinglikeacoffeegrinder.Theseissuescan,anddo, leadtolostfish,orworse:areelthatisbeyondrepair.Regardlessofwhetheryourgearisworth OverthelastsixyearsIhavebeentrainingasareeltechnician.Ienjoykeepingupwiththe latesttechnologyandadaptingitasanimprovementoverthestatusquo.Oneofthekeyparts ofthisisreelgreaseandoil.

Step1: Applyacoupleofdropsinbetweenthehandleknobandhandleshaft,turnthehandle knobtogettheoilseepingintothebottombearing.Ifyourhandleknobhasanoilport,ora coverattachedwithscrews,simplyundoandplaceacoupledropsontothetopbearing.Spin

Step4: Ifyourspinreelhasabaitfeedermechanism,applyoiltothetwopostsoneitherside ofthebody,andflicktheswitchbackandforthallowingoiltopenetratetheposts.I’veseen manybaitfeederswhichhaveneverbeenoiledandhaveseizedsolid!Thispreventsthatfrom happening.

Step3: Ifyourreelhasananti-reverseswitch,applyadroptothetopandtothebottomof theswitchpostandflickbackandforth,allowingtheoiltopenetrateintothesurroundingarea. Thiswillpreventtheswitchseizingandbreaking.

Step6: Applyadropofoiloneithersideofyourbailarmandrotor.Openandclosebailwire tomoveoilbetweentheseparts.Saltbuildupcanhappenquicklyinthisareaandcausethebail wirenottoopenorshutproperly.Byapplyingoilinthisarea,itpreventssaltwateringressand corrosion.

Step5: Undothesidecaponthebodyofyourreelanddroptwodropsdirectlyontothe bearing.Takeoffthehandleontheoppositesideandrepeat.Windhandlebackonandspin thereeltoallowtheoiltoseepintobearingunderrotation.
