The Gatehouse Of Our Lady Of Thetford Last month’s About Thetford magazine featured an image on the front cover that caused some debate! We were pleased to receive several emails from people asking for more information about where it was located and indeed what it was. Some people who had lived in the town for a number of years could not recall ever having seen the structure. The image was taken by local historian Stuart Wilson as part of the 2020 Thetford Calendar competition co-ordinated by Leaping Hare. The calendars are still on sale, for the bargain price of £5 each or 3 for the price of 2. This month we’ve invited Stuart to tell us more about this important but perhaps more obscure, Thetford landmark.

The Gatehouse we see today is testimony to the skill and determination of the monks and their workers six hundred years ago. Following the Dissolution, the Priory buildings fell into decay and the site soon became a source of building materials for the local townsfolk.

Fortunately, the Gatehouse survived the worst of this pillaging probably because a barn on its east side (now gone) was used as a farm building well into the 18th Century.

The 14th Century Gatehouse is the most intact and arguably, the most imposing building remaining of Thetford Priory. Built about 200 years after the Priory’s foundation, in 1104, it provided a grand entrance to what had become an important religious site for pilgrims and dignitaries alike.

Henry VII rode through the Gatehouse before enjoying the hospitality and entertainment laid on by the monks which included eels from the river, wine from the vineyards, singers, jugglers and, remarkably, ‘a man with a camel’. RAF Regiment Spring in to Action Thetford saw assistance from 27 Squadron RAF Regiment recently with a riverside clean up on Spring Walk. Luckily the weather held out and although chilly the sun shone through the trees along the riverside whilst litter was picked, brambles were cleared, stumps removed and even street signs were cleaned by willing volunteers from the Squadron.

This was light work for the Squadron, as this time 2 years ago they were deployed to Salisbury whereby they provided specialist support to the Army and the emergency services in the novichok decontamination. A big thanks must go to the local Subway who very kindly fed and watered the guys during their hard work.

100th Birthday Celebration For Phyllis On February 20th About Thetford magazine’s Billie Lawler had the absolute pleasure of attending the 100th Birthday Party of Phyllis Manning - a wonderful lady who is Norfolk born and bred and currently living in Thetford at Alexander Court.

Phyllis celebrated surrounded by her huge and loving family who all had warm tales to tell of Mum, Sister, Nan, Great Nan and Great Great Nan! Her son Lionel said that Mum was always loving, fair but very firm and taught right from wrong whilst always encouraging him to pursue his dreams. He said that his Mum never fitted the conventional mould for a lady of her generation - in all the best ways. She rode motorbikes at 16 and went to live in London. She returned to Norfolk on a pushbike having biked all the way from Biggleswade!

It was whilst back in Norfolk in Methwold that she met and fell in love with her husband and they were married for 60 years until he passed away in 2001. During the Second World War Phyllis was a maker of as well as an inspector for parachutes-helping to keep our armed forces safe when jumping out of airplanes. It was very apparent whilst chatting to her granddaughter and oldest great grandson James that Phyllis is the family "rock"- a great listener; someone to confide in about your first valentines love, and a lady that believes you can do anything-that you should grab opportunities and adventures.

Chocolates Ready For Easter A team of dedicated knitters have once again busy knitting Easter chicks, rabbits and baskets which are then stuffed with chocolate Easter Eggs and sold for £1.50 each in aid of Cancer Research UK. Last year the project raised £1000 and the girls have set themselves the same target this year. This is only made possible through the many generous donations by local firms.

Queen Victoria Visits Thetford Society The speaker for the Thetford Society meeting held in February was Georgette Vale. She dressed as Queen Victoria in her later years in black mourning clothes. The theme was ‘Queen Victoria, Her Majesty will visit your town and remind you about the events that occurred during her long reign’.

Born 24th May 1819 at Kensington Palace baptismal, name of Alexandrina Victoria, she reigned for 63 years until her death on 22nd January 1901. Her parents were Prince Edward Duke of Kent and Strathearn and Princess Victoria of Saxe Coburg Saalfeld and until her birth there were no legitimate heirs to the throne. Her cousin Princess Charlotte, daughter of George 4th and married to Leopold of Saxe Coburg Saalfeld, later King of the Belgians, (brother to Queen Victoria’s Mother, and uncle of both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) had died in child birth having delivered a still born son.

Victoria’s parents married with the express intention of providing an heir to the throne, neither were young, her mother was a widow with two grown up children and her father was approaching fifty and in poor health, dying a year after Victoria’s birth.

After the talk refreshments were served to the members and questions were asked of the speaker. The speaker at the next meeting will be Gillian Grinham, an evening with Joyce Grenfell, sketches from Joyce Grenfell’s repertoire. The meetings of the Society are held at the United Reformed Church, Earls Street, Thetford, on the first Tuesday in the month, commencing at 7.30pm.

YMCA Shop Gives Thanks The YMCA shop in King Street has been open for a few months now and Camille the manager has been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people taking in clothing and household items for the team to sell.

She says the shoppers have all been fantastic too and of course none of it would be possible without her very dedicated team of volunteers. The YMCA supports young vulnerable people across Norfolk with safe housing and help getting into employment and more.

Camille and team are always happy to take donations in and are also looking for others to join their happy, friendly volunteer team. “It’s a great way to meet new people and have fun whilst supporting a great charity” Camille said. Contact 01842 762414 for more info.

Gadget Savvy Event For Older Residents Your Voice in Breckland is a voluntary organisation working with the public and agencies to ensure that Breckland's older people are represented and have a voice in the provision of services which impact on their lives. We are supported by both Norfolk County Council and Breckland District Council. Free Hearing Checks In Thetford To Mark World Hearing Day One local hearing company is raising awareness about the importance of hearing health by supporting World Hearing Day (3rd March 2020), a global initiative run by the World Health Organisation.

The Hearing Care Centre, which is East Anglia’s largest hearing care company, is offering free hearing checks at all 26 of its audiology clinics, including locally at Thetford Healthy Living Centre, in a bid to encourage local people to make their hearing health a priority.

This year’s World Hearing Day theme is ‘Hearing for life: don’t let hearing loss limit you’ and will highlight that timely and effective interventions can ensure that people with hearing loss are able to achieve their full potential in life. Hearing loss is a global challenge; 466 million people worldwide live with hearing loss and this number continues to grow. In the UK, 11 million people are living with hearing loss, approximately one in six of the population.

Karen Finch, Managing Director and lead audiologist of The Hearing Care Centre said, “Our team wish to raise awareness and spark discussion within the local area.

At all stages of our lives, hearing is a vital element for communication, socialising, learning and working. My team are focused on providing innovations & initiatives along with the best possible care to support people living with hearing loss to live their life to the fullest.

Hearing loss is often neglected for years and can affect every aspect of personal, social and professional life.

If left untreated, hearing loss can increase the risk of cognitive decline and dementia, but early interventions can ensure the impact of hearing loss remains minimal, and people can live a full unlimited life”.

The changes in King Street are quite noticeable, especially the loss of the King’s Arms with its steep roof suggestive of it once being thatched. The street frontage has been set back to form the modern square.

Watched on by horse-drawn vehicles, soon to be replaced by motors as one of the shop fronts displays, now of course it is all pedestrianised. The Dairy shop, though, is still recognisable as the cafe Tall Orders.

Games Club Added To Regular Activities

Project Set To Tackle Loneliness

A programme of actvities for local residents now has a regular Games Club added to the list, starting in March.

Do you (or someone you know) sometimes feel lonely or socially isolated?

The Charles Burrell Centre on Staniforth Road hosts a number of activities during the day which aims to bring people together by providing a space to connect. It utilises funding from the Co-op Foundation to provide the activities that have been taking place over the past few months. On a Monday there is ‘Meet Up Monday’ - a chance to grab a coffee and have a chat over some lunch. Wednesdays has ever popular bingo taking place from 1pm, and on Thursday there is a chair based exercise programme from 11.30am. On Fridays there are arts and crafts activities provided from 10.30am.

Now, starting on Tuesday 17th March, there will be a Games Club trialled from 2-4pm. Games will include old favourites such as cribbage and backgammon.

As social interactions in communities decline, people’s feelings of loneliness can skyrocket. Eden Project’s loneliness survey found that almost 7 out of 10 adults in the UK often feel lonely. While 10% of people over 65 feel lonely all the time according to the Campaign to End Loneliness. Feelings of loneliness and social isolation can impact negatively on people’s health and overall wellbeing. Operation No Cold Shoulder is a year long project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund that aims to tackle loneliness and social isolation.

The activities have been designed around the Engine Room Cafe’s regular opening hours to utilise the space as fully as possible and provide attendees with a chance to get some food at the same time. The Cafe is open to the public from 10am - 2pm Monday to Friday.

Thetford Inner Wheel In February, Thetford Inner Wheel had dinner followed by a most entertaining talk by Jean Brown. She and her husband had spent four years on a 60 foot narrow boat.

She was very insistent that it wasn’t a canal boat or a barge! We were amazed to hear it was only 7 foot wide and yet seemed to hold everything you needed for life on board even if it was quite difficult in such a confined space. Originally these boats were pulled by horses but now had an engine but limited to 4mph. Jean had many photos and a log book showing where their travels had taken them. The Staffordshire and Worcester canal was her favourite but she hated any tunnels! Gillian Vick gave the vote of thanks.

Plans were finalised for the St Patrick’s Day event to be held jointly with Thetford Rotary on Saturday 21st March, from 7.30pm. Tickets are £20 per person and available from the Leaping Hare. Price includes a two course Irish themed meal. Lastly, two members had attended the West Suffolk Hospital’s event to launch the Butterfly Appeal which aims to raise £340,000 to create a special area for end of life care where families can spend a few hours together.

Thetford Women’s Institute We always welcome new members. Meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday in the month at the United Reformed Church, Earl Street, Thetford from 7.15pm.

Meetings usually include a speaker, time for a chat over tea or coffee and biscuits, sometimes a quiz and always a monthly competition and raffle. We have two darts teams who meet monthly and take part in the Norfolk WI league. A lunch club meets monthly at various local 'eateries' for an informal lunch. Insight Into The Second World War The title of ‘Desperation’ gave little clue to the subject of Probus member Tom Grove’s talk at the club’s February meeting. Those who have heard him speak before might have guessed that it would be something to do with warfare. And so it was. With the approach of the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day his talk stirred many memories of the conflict.

As a social scientist, Tom approached aspects of the Second World War in an especially interesting way, highlighting the reasoning behind tactical and strategic actions by the allies to defeat Nazi Germany. Some, such as the destruction of Dresden by massive bombing raids, might have been considered a ‘desperate’ act but then, with the gift of hindsight it is easy to come to this conclusion. The reasons for this and other equally devastating actions were not taken on the whim of the moment, but were driven by complex pressures, not least by those exerted by our Soviet allies. Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda chief, made the most of this bombing by exaggerating the numbers of casualties and, of course, ignoring any mention of those thousands of civilians killed by the Nazi blitz and later terror weapons.

The speaker’s analysis of the various campaigns gave a fascinating insight into how they were conducted and whether they achieved the intended results. What cannot be disputed was the Allied victory was total, unlike World War 1 which ended in an Armistice and sowed the seeds for the second. The talk sparked plenty of questions and discussion from members who showed appreciation to their colleague in the usual way.

Thetford And District Dementia Support It has been a busy time for TADDS in February. We had new volunteers visit us and new people joining our group. One of our highlights was a visit from Sean aka "The Banjo Man" who is always really popular and evokes much singing and dancing. He was also able to serenade one of our lovely group who celebrated her birthday on Valentines day. It was also a month where the decision was made to close our once a month Thursday group, at the Methodist Church Hall. This group has struggled to get new people attending and it was felt that it had perhaps run its course. Thank you to all the volunteers who have supported us with that.

Moving forward we are already planning our summer and Christmas activities so watch out for the events on our facebook page and in our newsletter. We are also one of the nominated charities for Marathon Runner Mel Sturman who is going to complete a massive 300 marathons to raise money... so help her by attending some of the events she is organising the first being a quiz night on Friday 27th March. West Norfolk Aviation Society The presentation by our own manager, David, at the February meeting got off to a poor and late start due to technical problems with the projection equipment. To avoid the 101 minutes long film taking over the whole meeting, refreshments were served while a couple of technically competent members set about fault finding and making settings changes on the laptop.

Their efforts paid off and the very tolerant and good humoured audience settled down half an hour late to hear about the speaker’s favourite aviation author, the American, Ernest Kellogg Gann. This month’s Thetford Face is Keith Eldred. Keith has been involved in bringing drama to the town for many years and has been an active member of the community in many ways. By a twist of fate he became the owner of Gorse Industrial Estate that is now recognised as a site of special interest from the Cold war years.

How long have you lived in Thetford?

We’ve been here 55 years now. Margot (Keith’s wife) was pregnant with our second child when we came back from Hong Kong. We were searching the country for a suitable home. We’d already been through Thetford on our way to Constable Country and happened to stop in Newmarket. There we saw the details for the house and it ticked all our boxes, we wanted a house that backed onto the river and Thetford turned out to be half way between our parents. Once I saw the garden I fell in love with the house and we’ve been here ever since.

Does you house have a history? It was the Burrell family’s house originally; they lived here until the 1930s. Originally it was built in 1846, in the 1850s it was a school for a short time before the Burrells bought it in the 1860s. We bought the house from Ben Culey another well-known figure from the town.

You were a Surveyor in Hong Kong, what did you do when you first moved to Thetford? I came back on the understanding that I wouldn’t be a surveyor. I saw something in the Telegraph, an article about growing your own mushrooms, which I then tried in the stables quite successfully. So I decided to become a mushroom farmer. I was then looking for a place to grow mushrooms when I saw Barnham Gorse Industrial Estate (as it’s known now) was available in the Thetford and Watton Times. I grew 1 ½ tonnes a week for Woolworths in Ely.

When did you discover the site was of special interest? In the 1990s Wayne Cocroft from the Historical Commission (who eventually amalgamated with English Heritage) did a survey of cold war buildings over the whole country. As I had no money, I’d never developed the site. The tenants were happy with the units so the site had remained as it was built in the 1950s. In 2006 it was made a Scheduled National Monument to the Cold War. Since then Margot and I agreed to pay 20% of the costs and have collaborated with English Heritage to restore the site to its original condition from the 50s. In another year it will be in a condition to last another 50 – 100 years without any major work.

What happened to Gorse Farm Mushrooms?

Unfortunately we suffered from an awful disease that put pay to growing mushrooms on the site. At the same time Conrans suffered from a big fire in the town and were looking for somewhere to relocate to. They moved to Gorse Farm and the industrial estate started.

Do you get many visitors to the site? Once a year we open for Heritage Open Days and I usually do 2 or 3 private tours a month. I really enjoy it and it’s quite unusual to have a tour led by someone who has been so involved with the site for so long. An unbelievable number of people are also involved from all over.

You are also well known for your love of drama, how did that come about? Drama has been in my life since I was 15. In Hong Kong I directed the Cantonese Opera and played the Wicked Lover, wherever you are in the world there’s a place for you in drama. Margot also took part in many productions. When I came to Thetford, the Society in existence was just closing down. I put a notice in the local paper to start a new one. At the same time a lady called Doris had also put an ad in for a music society, so we got together to create the Thetford Music and Drama Society. Our 1st performance, The Reluctant Debutante was in 1969 in the brand new Carnegie Room. The Society ran for 40 years.

Do you have any highlights from those days? One highlight was playing Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady, Pam Spencer was directing and I had to lose 4 stone (I was about 19 stone at the time). Mostly I directed alongside Anne Swaine.

How did the Gang Shows come about? My son Mark joined the Cubs; I went along to a meeting and suggested doing a Gang Show. Mark immediately left Cubs, but I carried on with the show. They were very successful during the late 1970s and early 80s with over 100 people involved at a time.

You worked on Dads Army when it was filmed in the town, how did that happen? I was the chief extra getter for the show during the 70s. At the time I was the Chair of the Music and Drama Society so the production company asked me if I would help. I became very popular and then when we were paid I became even more popular! I have very happy memories of the party we threw at our house for the cast, James Beck chatting up all the ladies and John Le Mesurier complaining that my piano was out of tune. A photo of my visitor book with the cast signatures is in the Dads Army Museum.

In 2010 you starred in the Dads Army Play, did you enjoy the experience? I had a great time playing Sergeant Wilson, we also took the play to the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds. We are the only group that has a recorded version of the Dads Army Show.

Are you involved in Thetford Players? After the Tom Paine play and Dads Army Show, drama had practically stopped in the town. We had a meeting at the Ark and although very few of the people involved in those plays turned up, many others did and so Thetford Players was created. Now I am the Lifetime President. When I started the Players 10 years ago I directed the 1st Players Panto. Then I handed over the reins. I’m a great believer that drama is a great thing for people to do.

There are so many aspects to it, not just acting but make-up, costumes, props etc.

Have you been a part of any other Thetford groups? I joined Thetford Golf Club in 1968; I’ve been Captain twice and President once, followed by County President in 2000. Thetford has a super golf club and because its on sand and chalk it’s open all round the year. I became a Rotarian in 1969, for around 20 years I was quite active, I organised the Donkey Derby for many years. I loved the element of service before self.

I’ve been the Chair of the patients Committee at School Lane Surgery for at least 10 years; I’m a great fan of the NHS and the Doctors at the surgery.

What is your favourite thing about living in Thetford? I think it’s ‘situation’, I can walk outside my door and be within easy reach of the rivers and wildlife but I’m still in town. It’s in a brilliant position for Cambridge, Norwich and London.

The Velveteen Rabbit Theatre Production at Ancient House Ancient House is excited to be welcoming the Spinning Wheel Theatre to the museum in April with their new play The Velveteen Rabbit for children aged 3 and over and their families and friends.

The story, adapted from the book by Margery Williams

by Amy Wylie, starts when the Velveteen Rabbit is unwrapped on Christmas morning, he quickly becomes just another thing gathering dust in the toy box. Shunned by the other playthings, who are braver and more glamorous and have expensive motors and flashing lights, he fears he’ll never be played with. But a chance encounter makes him the favourite toy, and with a little magic and a lot of love, he might even become real!

This Spring, Spinning Wheel Theatre brings this very beautiful tale to life on stage by two actors, inventive puppetry and original songs. The production features multi-sensory elements and narration for the enjoyment of visually impaired children and their families. It is a joyful and uplifting tale of magic, friendship and hope, this is a show that the whole family with enjoy! The performance takes place on Saturday 18th April 2020.

Later Opening For Wretham Gardens The National Gardens Scheme gardens at Wretham Lodge, the former rectory to the church of St Ethelbert, will not be open at Easter this year, nor will the church be opening for its traditional refreshments and book sale. Getting Stoned!

We all lead such busy lives and always seem to be rushing from one place to another, spending too much time on our computers trying to complete deadlines. Many of us are not sparing enough quality ‘ME time’, needed to recharge and relax.

So many people feel others expect too much from us these days and work can become more and more demanding and put a lot of pressure upon us.

This all plays havoc with our bodies, both externally and internally. The body can only cope with this fast pace of life for so long and then something has to give. This can be seen in many forms examples maybe problems sleeping, excess perspiration, oily skin, breakouts, muscle and joint aches, irritability, digestive problems and fatigues to name just a few.

Our bodies need regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. It is all too easy to keep pushing ourselves, thinking all is the “norm”. Stop and give a little thought at just how amazing our bodies really are. We read to learn to read what our body is telling us, and spot the symptoms.

There are several things we can do to help boost our energy levels and promote feelings of well-being. Things such as meditation or Tai Chi, or having regular massage. There are numerous ways to access information on how to meditate these days or join specially run classes. Massage is an ancient and powerful tool, working on both psyche and physical levels. The use of Hot Stones in a massage are extremely effective and boost the power of a traditional massage considerably.

The stones are made from Volcanic rocks which can hold the heat for up to 30 minutes. It is also claimed that 1 stroke of a traditional massage would equal 5-7 when using the hot stones. It is deeper and very relaxing, helping to promote a greater sense of well being. Therapists need to be specially trained to perform this type of treatment.

I suggest, don’t wait until you have some of the symptoms mentioned above, try preventative measures and release your inner happiness!

Breckland Cats Protection Could you be over feeding your cat? As with us humans, it is not healthy for a cat to be overweight. It can put a strain of their joints and cause problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Cats should not be given 'human food' as most of it is very high in calories. For example, 30g of cheese is equivalent to four burgers for humans.

100ml of milk and 45g of tuna is equivalent to two burgers! Even 25g of chicken or ham is equivalent to one burger.

If you are unsure whether your cat is overweight a simple guide is that you should be able to feel your cat's ribs easily when you stroke their body lightly and you should clearly see a waistline when you look at them from above. Overweight cats are usually defined as being greater than 15 per cent over their ideal body weight, while the term obese is used for cats that are 30 per cent above their ideal weight. Cats under two years of age are less likely to gain weight. Between two and ten years, cats use up less energy so are more at risk of becoming overweight. Senior and geriatric cats aged 12 years and over, have a tendency to be underweight.

Most vets have a 'diet clinic' whereby your cat is weighed and if overweight, you will be advised on the amount of food they should be given. Overweight cats should never be starved or put on a 'crash diet' as any period of no food can very quickly be harmful. A gradual, steady decrease in bodyweight is ideal – it may take up to a year for a severely overweight cat to reach its ideal body condition. So please be advised by your vet.

Empty Homes Issue To Be Tackled By Breckland Council Breckland Council has announced a new Empty Homes support programme to help bring long-term empty homes back into use in Private Rented Sector.

Long term empty homes is a problem that affects the whole of the UK, with empty properties often attracting anti-social behaviour and crime as well as social issues and urban decay. The new programme by Breckland Council is committed to changing that cycle of decay and tackling the housing issue head on by reducing the number of empty properties in the district. Financial support will be offered to home owners in need of help to make their empty property house habitable, in return for making the property available to house people from the Housing Register and reducing homelessness.

Breckland Council will also be revisiting homeowners who have previously failed to cooperate in bringing their properties up to habitable standards and will consider enforcement measures to ensure empty properties do not decay in the community and meet the decent homes standard.

Empty homeowners within the Breckland district could now access up to £11,500 in grants as part of this programme to bring long term empty properties back into use, subject to eligibility. The grant can cover a wide range of work on the property, however the property must meet the "Decent Homes standard" upon completion. To fully qualify for the grants scheme the home owner has to agree to let the property to people from the housing register for a period of time, ensuring local residents benefit from increased local options.

Gardening Notes For March Spring at last! All the joy of longer days, blossom on trees and birds singing – and all the grief of weeds shooting up, grass needing cutting and finding out what casualties have been inflicted by the Winter – my garden shed for one in Storm Ciara. However you will be too busy to be downhearted – it’s action stations!

As well as running the mower over the lawn to take off those tufty bits, now is the time to feed the grass to help it thicken up and be in good heart for the summer.

There are many good commercial feeds but you can also scatter sieved garden compost over the area and rake it in. This will provide some food but also help with the soil structure and the retaining of moisture in the dry times. Now is the time to hard-prune roses. If you planted daffodils around the bushes they will mask the stumps and then, when the daffs need deadheading, the first luxuriant burst of leaves will be visible on the roses. It is strange how many plants, like some roses, have a red tone to their early leaves – it certainly adds brightness to the garden. If you have enough compost, trees and bushes, both ornamental and fruit-bearing, will benefit from a mulch. Ideally you remove weeds around the base and hoe or break up the soil to expose the pests that are sheltering there to the blackbirds and robins. Then, after a day or two, you add the compost layer. You could then sow some poached-egg-plant seeds Limnanthes - see picture top right. These flower early and attract aphid-eating predators (hoverflies etc) which in turn will control currant aphids, the cause of redcurrant blister leaf damage. In addition the flowers are pretty in their own right.

On the allotment, at last you can be planting and sowing. Early potatoes and onion sets can be planted.

The birds will tweak some of the sets out of the ground until they have put down roots, so keep checking your rows and re-planting. Once the ground has warmed up a bit you can be sowing carrots, parsnips, broad beans, leeks, radish and spinach. Remember to label the rows or mark them on a chart – when it comes to harvesting it is useful to know the name of the strain of plant you have sown; then you can decide whether to stay with that variety next year.

Our meeting this month is on the 26th in the United Reformed Church, starting proceedings as usual at 7.30pm. Simon White from Peter Beale’s will be coming to talk to us about growing roses. He gave us a most interesting talk last year and brought bare-root roses to sell, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for more of the same. Our Spring Show is on April 4th so now’s the time to read the schedule (supplied with the members’ diary) and see what can be readied for this date. For instance, if you have pots of bulbs that need to be checked, you can put them in the shade of a north wall while putting them into the sun and by a south wall will bring them into bloom more quickly.

Pop Up Garden 2020 Campaign Launch Lake House in Castle Lane is the venue for the first ‘popup’ garden for this year’s Open Gardens campaign.

Hosted by Ken and Heather Nicholls on Tuesday March 24th with a theme of Poetry and Daffodils, the garden will be open between 10am and 1pm. “Last year we challenged visitors to guess how many daffs were in the garden,” said Ken “we had someone who got close, they were within 1 of the 1700 total. This year we’ve planted even more and hope to have over 2000 daffodils in bloom when we open.”

Over the past 8 years Ken and Heather have developed a peace garden at their home and are asking visitors to bring along a piece of poetry to share after the success of a poem Ken wrote for last year’s Open Gardens was read out on Radio Norfolk. “I’m quite keen on Poetry and I know many others in the community are too,” Ken explained “it’s not a competition, just an opportunity for people to share with one another or to discover poetry for the first time since their school days. It could be something you are inspired by or it might be a poem that you were made to learn as a child and it’s still stayed with you that you think other people might enjoy.”

Cakes, tea, coffee and soft drinks will be available for visitors to enjoy with all donations going to Thetford Open Gardens. Ken and Heather do not have a personal

connection to St Nicholas Hospice but appreciate the support that the Hospice Care team provide. “People go through life without thinking about death until they have to confront it. St Nicholas Hospice gives support, counselling and a listening ear that is so important. We wanted to offer our garden as a place where people can wander around and enjoy whilst supporting the hospice.”

For Ken a memory from when he was a teacher made him realise how vital the service St Nicholas Hospice offers young people is. An 8 year old child in his class lost her 4 year old sister suddenly and was struggling to cope. Ken discovered there was no support available for children at that time. He subsequently went on a child bereavement course so he could offer support himself and is keen to support the work St Nicholas Hospice does with children.

A Little Success Story Whether you’re an avid parkrunner, a feeder of the ducks or simply an observant Thetford resident, you have probably noticed a dinky white heron along one of the local rivers or streams at some point. At about one third the mass of a Grey Heron, the Little Egret is one of the smaller members of the heron family, though like most of their relatives, they can look quite big when they extend their long necks. As well as the pristine white plumage, another conspicuous feature is their jet black legs with contrasting bright yellow feet. Little Egrets eat a range of small aquatic creatures, which they often find by using their feet to disturb the river bed. One of their preferred snacks, small fish such as minnows and sticklebacks, can be very inquisitive. The canny egrets capitalise on this behaviour by shaking their feet under the water, luring fish to them to investigate – with fatal results!

I moved to Thetford on joining BTO staff in 2009. Since then, I’ve visited BTO’s Nunnery Lakes reserve on the south side of the town more or less every other day, recording all the birds I see each time using the BirdTrack app (www.birdtrack.net). During my first 18 months of visiting the reserve, I saw a Little Egret

on just five occasions. By 2013, they were featuring on 1 in 2 of my visits. Last year I saw them on 3 out of 4 visits, and this year Little Egret is currently on 92% of my BirdTrack lists for the reserve! Little Egrets first successfully bred in Britain in 1996, when a pair raised three young on Brownsea Island in Dorset. Since then their range has expanded rapidly, and they now breed as far north as Cumbria and Northumberland. They are a colonial breeding species, usually nesting in heronries with Grey Herons. Until the mid-2000s, when they began nesting near Lakenheath, Thetford’s nearest heronry with Little Egrets was on the Wash. This may explain why it’s taken so long for them to become a common sight in Breckland, 35 miles or so from coastal colonies. Young birds disperse from their natal sites in late summer.

In May 2013 a BTO colleague attached a colour-ring to the leg of a recently-hatched bird near Terrington St Clement, only for me to discover it in Thetford on 19 July – showing just how quickly young egrets can start spreading their wings!

Jean 72, was diagnosed with a small TIA in 2015 and decided she had to take more care of herself. Jean's family had a history of heart disease and she felt the TIA was a bit of a warning. Jean had never been an athletic person and was unsure if she could manage the 5k distance. Jean regularly jogs/walks parkrun and has also volunteered 48 times. When Jean joined parkrun in 2015 she would take 54 minutes to complete the 5k.

Jean's fastest 5k is 37 minutes but mostly averages between 40-45 minutes. Jean had a hip replacement and a pin and plate in her left foot but this has never deterred her from regularly attending parkrun and completing 102 events. Jean is a member of Slimming World and has lost 2.5 stone, going from a size 18-20 to a size 10-12. She has remained target weight for four years and says weight loss and parkrun has improved her fitness and well-being.

Parkrun has given Jean the confidence to do something that she had never done before. Jean is a very popular member of the parkrun family and has made many friends. Jean has recently been a key representative on the Norfolk County Council, Healthy Ageing and Forever Young Campaign. The aim of the campaign is to promote healthier lifestyles in the over 55 age group.

Thetford Dolphins A record number of Thetford Dolphins qualified this year for Norfolk County Championships Long Course Competition at the UEA Norwich 2020 - this gruelling competition spanned over 3 weekends.

The club took home a total of 22 Gold Medals, 22 Silver Medals, 24 Bronze and a fantastic 81 swimmers were individual finalists. S.M.A.R.T. Goals are a great way of setting stages in our fitness journey that aren’t too high and targets that are achievable but still with the added aspect of challenge.

Feltwell Golf Club has a thriving Junior Section and has over 20 juniors joining lessons every Saturday, under the tutelage of our PGA Professional Jo Bates, Most of these have now also become members of the Club.

We work closely with Golf Roots and England Golf, and recently achieved Safe Golf Accreditation. Last year we entered the Golf Roots, Golf 6s competition, open to all clubs and our Juniors greatly enjoyed the experience and the challenge of competition and are eager to sign up again this summer. Here, I’ll use an example of a smart goal for weight loss; S – Specific: State what you want to accomplish. Your end goal maybe to lose 2 stone, get to a certain dress/ trouser size.

M – Measurable: Use smaller, mini goals to measure progress Being Smart about your first goals is to know not to set the posts too far away from where you’re currently at now. In doing so will just chip away at your motivation and your goal can feel unreachable. So set a smaller goal of a smaller weight loss.

A – Achievable: Make your goals reasonable. Setting yourself an achievable goal is a massive part of SMART goals. Mindset is the biggest part of reaching goals, if you’re there and focused in the mind, you can do anything. But, don’t set yourself a weight loss goal and expect it to be done after one workout and by the end of the month – these things take time.

R – Realistic: Goal setting with relevance to your life.

If you have a job, kids, a house to run you’ll know how hard it is to find that ‘you’ time. You need to find time when planning your SMART goals that you can devote to yourself and your plans. You can’t say you’ll workout 7 times a week when realistically you can only do less.

T – Time: Set yourself a goal date. Dates are important, it gives you a time limit on your set goal and that extra added push to get it done by then. Depending on gaols and ambitions, I’d re-evaluate these goals monthly. That way you’re maintaining your focus, constantly setting the bar a little higher and always hitting targets – all positive!

This year’s Open Day at Feltwell Golf Club centres around Community, Sport and Fitness. We will be open from 10am until 5pm on Monday 25th May and are inviting local sports and sport related clubs to join us to promote not only their own sport but encourage all to take part in sport whether that be team games, walking, cycling etc. We have been lucky enough this year to gain the support of Chrissie Wellington, born and brought up in Feltwell, a British Triathlete and four times World Ironman Champion. Chrissie is now a director of Park Run and will be giving us a talk on Park Run and its benefits and joys, at 2pm in the Club House. After our success last year we will also, of course, have a Family Texas Scramble made up of teams of 4 and a Putting Competition. Golf will be available at a knock-down rate of £5 a round and on top of all this there will be Craft Stalls and Robert’s will be running an all-day BBQ. All monies raised on the day will go towards our fund for new covered Practice Bays, something that could benefit everyone, a Driving Range on your doorstep.

Bowls Success For Youngsters

CBC 5k And 10k Runs

All short mat bowls clubs in Norfolk were invited to Hingham Sports and Social Club in January to compete in qualifying sessions to decide who will represent the County in the National Championships.

Looking for a challenge to kickstart your fitness regime or to keep you on track? The Charles Burrell Centre 10K and 5K Forest Run on Sunday March 29th 2020 is for you! The Run starts and finishes at the Centre and takes in the wonderful wooded area nearby. The course will have marshals to help keep you on track and there will be refreshments available from The Engine Room café before and after the run. All monies raised from the event will go towards supporting CBC’s charity work in the local community. With a great warm up planned

Three youngsters, Shane Wissner, Kieran Suffolk and Chloe Suffolk, from the Thetford Short Mat Bowls Club competed in the under 18s section. All played well with 11 year old Chloe finishing in second place. The winner on the day was Ryan Fox from Halvergate, who is the current national champion. This means that Ryan and Chloe will represent Norfolk at the Bowls National Championships in Melton Mowbray in April where they will be competing against youngsters from Devon, Dorset, Essex, Hampshire, Kent, Greater Manchester, North Yorkshire, Northants, Somerset and West Midlands. Many, many congratulations to all three Thetford players. Chloe said she was very pleased to have qualified and proud to be representing Norfolk.
