It has been a busy few months for Council with the opening of three family-friendly destinations across our City — two new all-abilities playgrounds in Malvern East and Kooyong and the reopening of the Windsor Siding BMX pump track.
I have loved seeing families and residents enjoying the new and refurbished spaces. Check out some photos of the opening celebrations on page three.
As we head into the winter months, Council’s focus remains on continuing to deliver for our community. Work is progressing across several key infrastructure projects, including construction of the Toorak Park Pavilion and replacement of the perimeter fencing around Percy Trevaud Memorial Park.
By the time this goes to print, the Prahran Skate Park and Basketball Court redevelopment will be almost complete, including a new vert ramp, plaza and public lighting.
The national Mainstreet Australia Conference comes to Stonnington in August. This national conference brings together the country’s leading urban designers to listen, collaborate and share ideas that can make our retail, lifestyle and business precincts thrive.
In this edition of Stonnington News, we look at how Council is making sport accessible to everyone, rediscover our heritage and history with the Stonnington History Centre, and discover the wonderful artwork on display at Prahran Town Hall, which is now open to the community as a drop-in study and co-working space. We continue to keep our aged community socially connected and include a calendar of events for
Stonnington’s Meet Your Council sessions are an opportunity for the community and Council to come together to connect on the issues that are important.
Held as collaborative round-table discussions, attendees can sit and talk directly with their local Councillors about issues that are important to them.
For South Yarra resident Michael Fink, dropping into a Meet Your Council session opened his eyes to the range of issues facing his local community.
“I decided to go along at the last minute to find out more about some parking changes in my street and found the whole night to be a lovely experience,” he said.
“My local Councillors were really responsive, and I got to meet some like-minded neighbours as well.”
Issues discussed at the Meet Your Council sessions range from waste and recycling, parking, planning, building heritage, community facilities and more.
Stonnington North Ward Councillor, Cr Marcia Griffin, encouraged residents to come along to a Meet your Council session to discuss issues, share ideas or to simply have a chat. “It’s a fantastic way to meet neighbours and local community members and it also allows Councillors to directly respond to issues that are important to our residents and businesses,” Cr Griffin said. Upcoming sessions will be held in June and July and refreshments provided.

residents aged 55 and over to attend to meet new people and try something new. As winter sets in we have events for the whole community to enjoy, including the Roola Boola Children’s Arts Festival, Glow Winter Arts Festival and, of course, live music and performances at Chapel Off Chapel.
We value your input and would love to hear from you. Meet Your Council sessions are a great opportunity to discuss issues or simply have a chat with your local representative. Details can be found on page 11.
As a Council, we continue to work hard to provide you with amenities, vital services and infrastructure that help make our City a great place to live, work, visit and play.
Until next time,
Cr Joe Gianfriddo Mayor City of Stonnington
Stonnington and its councillors are passionate about advocating for the best possible outcomes for our City and community. We work hard to ensure that our views are heard, and we collaborate with key stakeholders on important projects and policies.
Council is the level of government closest to the community and our community must be represented to decision makers. We advocate by raising community concerns about planning issues to the State Government, applying for grant and other funding opportunities, writing letters, meeting with elected officials, community engagement, and providing input to government inquiries.
Stonnington CEO Dale Dickson PSM is enthusiastic about advocacy and the opportunities it presents for investment and positive change in our City.
“Partnership is at the heart of everything we do in Council – we must partner with our community and decision-makers to ensure Stonnington's ongoing liveability.” Some of the critical issues that Stonnington has recently released public statements on:
» redevelopment of Horace Petty and Essex Street housing estates
» 173 Burke Road development
» Chadstone Activity Centre.

Fast forward two weeks and the festivities headed across town to Windsor Siding, to welcome back the much-loved BMX pump track.
A track competition, prizes, giveaways and free sausage sizzle made for a fun and entertaining morning with the Mayor, Cr Joe Gianfriddo, welcoming the BMXers and scooter and skateboard riders following the six-month track rebuild.
“I hope the rejuvenated track and the surrounding Windsor Siding Reserve continues to bring the community together and fosters connection for local residents and families,” Cr Gianfriddo said.
“While the BMX track rebuild is the final piece in the Windsor Siding plan, we will continue to evolve the reserve over coming years to ensure it remains the gem for the community you see here today.”
Smiling faces, showers of bubbles, soft serve and sausage sizzles have been front and centre in recent months, as we’ve celebrated the opening of three new family-friendly destinations across the city.
The festivities kicked off in mid-March when the Mayor, Cr Joe Gianfriddo, squeezed the bubble gun trigger to declare Stonnington’s new favourite playground open – delighting the excited families who gathered at the newly finished Central Park all-abilities play space.
At the opening Cr Gianfriddo thanked the Stonnington community for

Rounding out the trio of celebrations, in early-May local families were treated to free ice creams and lolly bags as they explored the recently opened playground at Sir Zelman Cowen Park in Kooyong.
This new space features play experiences to delight people of all abilities and, with its expanse of lawn, shade trees, covered barbecue area and picnic tables, makes the perfect destination for a family day out.
The Mayor, Cr Joe Gianfriddo was delighted to attend the third facility opening in as many months and
supporting the project since the plan to build the playground was first announced in 2021.
“Today we’re celebrating a playground that offers play experiences for everyone, and one that I’m sure will continue to delight for many years to come,” Cr Gianfriddo said.
The sunny Saturday made for a perfect morning of family-fun with the little ones exploring all the nooks and crannies, giving the play equipment a workout and soaking up the crowdpleasing water mister. And, in a delicious twist, free soft serve ice cream and lolly bags to take home were a big hit.
Park all-abilities

“Our newest playground is designed with everyone in mind, no matter their age or ability,” Cr Gianfriddo said.
“Our partnership with the Victorian Government has allowed us to build this fabulous playground with a Changing Places facility, resulting in Stonnington’s most accessible and inclusive play space to date.”
To the delight of the crowd and as a nod to the stars, the May the fourth (be with you) opening was sealed with a mayoral swoosh of a light saber!

Thanks to a $13,000 community grant from Council, more than a dozen people joined an eight-week inclusive indoor hockey program.
The program, run by disability service provider Scope, enables people with multiple and complex disabilities to take part in social and fun indoor hockey games.
Scope Community Inclusion Officer and hockey referee Sara Caluzzi said rules and equipment are modified to allow participants to enjoy the game in a way that suits them best. Modifications include placing bells in hockey balls for vision-impaired players and affixing hockey sticks to wheelchairs.
“Being able to create programs like this that are specifically modified to people’s needs means they can participate in activities within community facilities, and we can also try and engage community members to be part of that,” she said.
“We’re honoured to be in this position to create a program. It’s been a couple of years of work, and we’ve worked hard to make it as accessible as possible. We’re excited about the potential for future programs.
Initially held at Orrong Romanis Recreation Centre, the program moved to the newly opened Sports Centre, where accessible facilities can meet everyone’s needs.
East Ward Councillor, Cr Polly Morgan, said the Stonnington Sports Centre had accessible facilities that could meet the needs of active community members with multiple and complex disabilities.
“The sports centre is very accessible, with ramps, doorways and change rooms that are easy to navigate, and I encourage anyone requiring accessible access to check out its current and upcoming programs” she said.
As well as accommodating all-abilities sports, the Stonnington Sports Centre
has also enabled greater participation for local netballers.
South Ward Councillor, Cr Melina Sehr, said it was great to see the Stonnington Sports Centre could accommodate lots of groups.
“I remember the netballers setting up courts in the former Cato St carpark every Sunday morning at the break of dawn,” she said.
“Even in the middle of winter when it was freezing, they were out there playing the game they love.
I am thrilled sporting groups including our netballers now have a dedicated indoor (and much warmer) facility in Stonnington to call their own!”
While the current program has ended, keep an eye out for future programs coming up at stonnington.vic.gov.au/ active/home

Invented in a Washington state backyard in 1965, pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is a sport that can be learned in minutes and enjoyed for a lifetime.
If you are keen to try you can head to Stonnington Sports Centre for a ‘Come and Try’ session or grab a group of friends and hire an indoor pickleball court.
Stonnington Active Communities team lead Jack Sharman said pickleball was becoming the sport to try.
“There are over 25,000 players already across Australia, and the Stonnington team is super keen to bring pickleball to our community,” he said.
“Pickleball’s accessible and easy-to-learn nature makes it a great new sport to jump into – we encourage anyone
thinking about it to head to Stonnington Sports Centre and give it a go!”
Bookings are available for Monday and Friday mornings from 10am – 12pm at the Centre, with ‘Come & Try’ sessions held on selected Fridays, where a coach helps explain the rules, scoring and technique of pickleball.
East Ward Councillor, Cr Jami Klisaris, said Council was excited to bring Pickleball to the community.
“A lot of residents have asked about Pickleball, and thanks to the Stonnington Sports Centre we have three indoor pickleball courts. It’s a fun and inclusive sport for people of all ages and abilities,” she said.
Community members and the public can join an existing competition or enjoy casual booking hire.
North Ward Councillor, Cr Matthew Koce, said the Stonnington Sports Centre had proved to be a hit with residents in its first six months since opening.
“Council has been thrilled to see the new stadium booked by so many residents, sporting and community groups so far,” Cr Koce said.
“It’s a great facility for helping our community stay active and socially connected, especially during the upcoming winter months.”

Residents can explore this history and heritage for themselves when the Stonnington History Centre opens its doors to the public as part of Open House Melbourne 2024.
This free event, held on Saturday, 27 July, allows visitors to roam the Centre’s extensive archives, including history from the former cities of Malvern and Prahran.
The collection comprises photographs, maps, building and subdivision plans,
annual reports and correspondence in paper and electronic formats.
The History Centre is situated within the historic house Northbrook, behind Malvern Library. The Victorian Italianate villa was built around 1889 and designed by architect Charles D’Ebro.
Visitors to the Open House can also explore the building’s historic features, including a small portico with a pressed-metal ceiling, elaborate mouldings and a balustrade parapet.

A selection of 20 artworks, most of which have not been on public display for several years, can now be viewed at our community pop-up space, Study@Greville.
In selecting and curating the bespoke pieces for the space, our Visual Arts team looked to the history of iconic Chapel Street and the role of our libraries in the community.
A very keen eye might remember a piece by Polixeni Papapetrou entitled Delphi. Made in 2016, Delphi was acquired by Council in 2018 and was previously displayed at Prahran Town Hall. Delphi has been enjoying a well-deserved rest but is excited to see everyone again!
Like others by Papapetrou, this artwork explores the relationship between history and contemporary culture. She depicts the representation of young people in media and creates fantastical worlds that feature children, with these characters inhabiting other times and places. Another highlight to watch out for is two pieces by artist Nicholas Mangan. Ancient Lights (Brilliant Errors) #1 & #2, created in 2015, were previously on display at Malvern Town Hall.
This is the first time Ancient Lights (Brilliant Errors) #1 & #2 have been exhibited in one of our libraries, and something new is revealed every time you look at them. They explore the properties of the sun and consider humanity’s connection to it.
The house also features heavily paneled timber walls, stenciled and gilded vaulted ceilings with cherubs, elaborate cornices, ceilings, centre roses and overmantles.
Step back in time at the Stonnington History Centre on Saturday, 27 July, from 10am to 2pm.

Uncle Les Stanley has a dream that every future Indigenous generation is stronger than the one that came before.
“I like to tell our youth not to have any expectations and don’t depend on anyone else,” he said.
“Instead, think for yourself and make your own opportunities.”
Uncle Les, a YandruwandhaYawareawarrka man, Aboriginal artist, and mentor, shares his knowledge and creativity with the Stonnington community through painting classes.
The painting classes, facilitated by the City of Stonnington Middle Years and Youth Services team, help connect youth within the Horace Petty housing estate and the wider community and provide a range of fun interactive workshops and activities.
“I get so much enjoyment from sharing my knowledge and techniques with kids,” he said.
“I’m passionate about teaching kids that art can be completely individual.
“I enjoy using different colours and brushes to achieve different textures that depict elements of the environment. My paintings are interpretations and expressions of my feelings and memories – they’re not based on dreams or stories.”
“We need to maintain the real essence of NAIDOC and not lose sight of its true meaning.”
This year’s NAIDOC Week, held from 7 to 14 July, is an opportunity to share with the community the true meaning behind NAIDOC and why celebrating the journey of First Nations People is important.
This year’s theme is ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’, highlighting the important role that Indigenous Elders across every generation play, and continue to play, within communities and families.
“It’s about engagement and sharing stories,” Uncle Les said.
“We must keep talking, asking questions and learning about our history and culture.”
South Ward Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Cr Mike Scott, said Stonnington will recognise NAIDOC Week through a series of events including a Smoking Ceremony, a traditional flag raising ceremony; and a Welcome to Country at Malvern Town Hall on 4 July.
“Stonnington sits on the Traditional Lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the East Kulin Nations, part of the Boonwurrung language area and this NAIDOC Week I invite all Stonnington residents to learn more about our shared First Nations history and culture,” he said.

Starting life with a newborn baby is an exciting time for parents, but it is also a time of change that can be challenging without support.
Stonnington’s newest residents will have their first appointment with one of our Maternal Child and Health (MCH) nurses when they are seven days old, and this care continues until they go to school.
We met with Indigenous Elder and artist Uncle Les Stanley at Grattan Gardens, where The Rainbow Serpent hangs in the Community Centre.
The piece is a collaboration between Prahran Community Learning Centre Arts Program students, Prahran Secondary College, Hester Hornbook Academy and Windsor Primary School.
Uncle Les and local Indigenous artist Christinaray Nadya Weetra coordinated the piece over a series of classes throughout 2019.
Uncle Les’ work shows an incredible eye for detail, from the finest feathers of the lyrebird to the unique texture of the platypus bill and turtle shell and the shimmering waters that surround them.
“I’m passionate about conserving our native animals — I will always paint the birds, waterlife and animals that are native to Australia,” he said.
“Our natural environment is the backbone to our survival – it must be respected.”
↘ Uncle Les and his work, including The Rainbow Serpent on display at the
centre.
Stonnington’s Sleep and Settling MCH nurse Liam Jackson says he loves the continuity of care.
“I do home visits to meet the newborn and family and introduce them to our service, weigh the baby and check on the parents’ health and wellbeing,” Liam said.
“I see a baby from birth and it’s great to watch the baby grow up.”
There are over 1800 qualified MCH nurses in Victoria and Liam is one of only two male MCH nurses in the state. He says he became a nurse because he wanted to help people, and he chose maternal and child health because he wanted to do something different.
“I wanted to work in the local community,” he said.
“The MCH centre is a wonderful space where and I can spend more time providing education and I feel more connected to the community.”
MCH nurses are registered as both nurses and midwives, with additional qualifications in child, family and community health.
Liam says the community’s response to a male nurse has been positive.
“We have a dads group within our new parents group, and I think it’s been beneficial for families to see a positive male role model in the community.”
The MCH service is free and available to all families within Stonnington for children from birth to school age.
Their mission is simple – help more people feel better and live longer.
While some health centres have saunas and some have ice baths, new High Street wellness clinic Super Young saw a gap in the market to also add access to doctors and a carefully selected supplement plan.
“Customers come in and determine a baseline of where they sit from a wellness and longevity perspective through blood work, and then we track their results and improvements through technology,” said Jarrod Kagan, who founded the business alongside Nick Bell and Tristan Sternson.
“Then we’ll have longevity doctors and global experts that will work with these people to talk about how they’ll move those blood markers in the right direction through a range of different protocols.”
Protocols could include clinic-based therapies such as cryotherapy, IV therapy, red light therapy, oxygen therapy, hot and cold therapy through saunas and ice baths and a carefully selected supplement range.
Jarrod said the idea to bring the clinic to Stonnington was inspired by a trip to Los Angeles, where similar longevity health centres have popped up.
“We’ve done it all ourselves and we are really excited to be able to bring
this to everyday Australians, especially in Stonnington,” he said.
“I grew up in Stonnington, so it’s an area we absolutely love.”
The team behind Super Young benefitted from a strong relationship with Stonnington’s Business Concierge Service.
“Dealing with the Super Young team from early on allowed both parties to build a strong relationship, which assisted with navigating requirements for opening a new business,” council’s business concierge officer Lisa Beer said.
“I am thrilled we could assist Super Young and I am looking forward to continuing the relationship as their new business thrives.”
Jarrod said the support from Business Concierge was incredible.
“The council was really responsive and good to deal with,” he said.
“We couldn’t think of a better strip for our clinic. We looked at Brighton, we looked at the city, we looked at Richmond, but this place is perfect for us.”
With Barbie-themed pillows and pink-painted walls, getting your hair done at Blondye Hair Emporium is all about the experience.
True to its hip South Yarra surroundings, the new salon adds a “cool vibe” to the classic services and treatments.
Blondye, which opened in October 2023, specialises in hair extensions but is also open for cuts, toners, highlights, colours, gloss and maintenance.
“I wanted a cool vibe and to catch your eye as you’re walking past,” owner and stylist Riley Fusinato said.
Based on Commercial Rd, Blondye is just a stone’s throw from Prahran Market.
“I like the vibes around the whole area,” Riley said. “As soon as I had a dream of owning a salon, it was always in this area.
“There’s such a diverse group of people in the neighborhood. It’s a happening place.
“We’re friends with our neighbours. Operating a business here is being part of a community. I feel like I’m at home when I’m here.”
“It’s been brilliant. We’ve had lots of walk-ins.”
Riley worked with Stonnington’s business concierge team to help her with the steps towards opening.
“I had been a home-based business before,” she said.
“I couldn’t believe how wonderful the business concierge service was, especially as a first-time business owner within Stonnington.
“I felt really welcomed and all my questions were answered. Some things, such as what permits were needed, were new to me.”
South Ward Councillor, Cr Nicki Batagol, said Council’s Business Concierge Service helps new and existing businesses navigate doing business in the City. “Our business concierge team can help with everything, including streamlining permits and approvals processes. I am delighted to welcome Blondye to Stonnington and am thrilled that we can offer specialised concierge support to our existing and new business community.”
Riley said business had been strong since opening, with lots of walk-ins and eyes drawn to their pink-themed entrance.

A much-loved Kooyong Village institution has reopened its doors following a serious kitchen fire.
Croutons Fine Foods closed its doors for nine months in 2023, reopening to the community in March. The family-owned business has been serving Kooyong and surrounds since 1977.
It’s famed for its traditional, homestyle and modern cuisine, all made fresh onsite and available to take home and eat.
Stonnington Council Business Concierge Officer Gerard Smith said the local community was thrilled that Croutons was trading again.
“Croutons is a destination that brings a lot of foot traffic to Kooyong Village,” he said.
“And their poached chicken and chive sandwiches are a must try!”
