“It’s on a Friday so it’s a great way to celebrate the end of the week,” said Tomma Bordenkircher, who is a member of BPW and serves on the First Step Board of Trustees. “Vicki Laudick will talk a little bit about First Step and the rest of the evening will be a good time with your girlfriends.” Monetary donations and other donated items for the shelter will be collected during the event. For each donation, you will be entered into a drawing for baskets valued at $100 each. To see a wish list for items needed visit: http://www. firststepcoshocton.org/files/wishlist.pdf . Pre-sale tickets are available now through Friday, March 2 at Coshocton County Chamber of Commerce, First Step Shelter or by contacting Polly Pace at 330-243-8921, Donna Fischer at 740-294-9281 or Tonya Bevins at 740-545-1000. Bordenkircher said the event raised $500 last year and organizers hope to achieve $1,000 in profit this year. “BPW always helps out First Step and I decided to take it a step further and get on the board,” she said. “I learn something new all the time with the biggest thing being that victims leave and go back four to six times before they leave for good. You can’t criticize them the first, second or even third time they do it. Don’t say why to them. Be there to give them support.”

“Our goal is always to have one more member than last year,” Burkey said. “We want to continue to grow so we can keep having clout legislatively on the state and national level for farmers and land owners.” She believes around 1,500 people are members of the Coshocton County Farm Bureau. Burkey has been with the farm bureau for five years, but has only served Coshocton County for about six months. She was responsible for Morgan, Muskingum, Perry, and Washington counties, but when the farm bureau recently restructured she lost Perry and Washington counties and picked up Coshocton, Knox and Licking counties. “It’s been exciting and challenging,” Burkey said. “Every county has different projects and volunteers and I’ve had to learn my way around the counties.” Burkey lives in Muskingum County near Adamsville and runs KD Guest Ranch with her husband. “We get to bring agriculture awareness to city folks,” she said. “Some of the people that come here don’t have a clue where their milk or eggs come from other than the grocery store.” Membership in the farm bureau is $65 a year. Those who join the organization get a discount at a variety of businesses and help make sure safe affordable food is available to the public. JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

The Coshocton County Farm Bureau wants to bring agriculture awareness to the public and they hope to do that through the Farmers’ Share Breakfast. The Farmers’ Share Breakfast, sponsored by the Coshocton County Farm Bureau and Ridgewood FFA, will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Coshocton County Career Center. The meal includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee and juice and only costs $1, which is the approximate amount of money farmers get for growing and raising the ingredients. “When you see prices go up in the grocery store that is from the cost of things like transportation and marketing,” said Kari Burkey, director of the Coshocton County Farm Bureau. “Farmers are not getting rich off of farming. They farm because they have a passion for agriculture and a love of growing things.” The morning also will include a scavenger hunt and agriculture displays. “We wanted to make it fun for the kids,” Burkey said. “The scavenger hunt will include agriculture facts like how much water a dairy cow drinks each day and how many gallons of milk a day it produces.” At 9:30 a.m. there also will be a safety meeting. Brandi Johnston from Grainger will speak on grain bin safety and tractor rollover/ run over safety. The farm bureau also is in the middle of a

the other side of abuse.” When Crye was done speaking Lena Stubbs took her turn at the podium. She spoke about being a child and watching violence occur in her home and how that impacted her as an adult. “We need to education our children so abuse does not go silent,” she said. “They need to know there are support systems out there. As a child I wish I knew there was someone I could trust and tell my circumstances to without any consequences.” Laudick reminded the audience that domestic violence, sexual assault and bulling are community issues. “We can make a difference if we choose to,” she said. Laudick also thanked the 78 people in attendance for their support. “I appreciate all of you,” Laudick said. “I’m in awe of how many of you are here. We have never had this many. You being here means that you support us and believe in what we are doing.” JOSIE@COSHOCTONCOUNTYBEACON.COM

Several tear jerking stories were told at First Step Family Violence Intervention Services’ 2011 annual Meeting, but the message behind each of them was one of hope. “Violence has an impact on children and it’s is up to us to reach out to them and say how are you doing so they know there is support out there,” said Vicki Laudick, executive director of First Step. “My hope is that my grandchildren will have a peaceful community in Coshocton.” In 2011 the agency provided more than 16,363.25 direct services hours and 213 prevention hours. The shelter was occupied 100 percent of the time and 308 victims and children were seen for individual and group support including protection orders. Prevention education also was provided to 4,669 students in the three local school districts and the Coshocton County Career Center. All of this was done with the help of a dedicated staff and group of volunteers. Board of Trustees member Crystal Kiser acknowledged the students, volunteers and community members who support First Step. “There are a lot of people that make First Step the success that it is,” she said. After dinner, attendees watched the film, “Burial” by Josh Young. The film is a about a young girl who says goodbye to the father she should have had and also was a way for Young to deal with feelings about his own father who was abusive to his mother. When Young’s film ended his mother, Debbie Crye shared her story of life after abuse. “I survived because of my family, faith and First Step,” she said. Crye was a victim of abuse for about 22 years, but she now owns her own home and is an active member of the community. “I can listen to the music I want, cook meals that won’t end up on the wall and have my children over to my house, a house of peace,” she said. Crye also explained the need to have patience and not criticize those who have dealt with an abusive relationship. “I stayed to protect my kids,” she said. “The abuse was only on me. He threatened to kill me, my children, my mother and anyone who tried to help me. He also was a marksman. Who was I to cause pain and suffering to a good family if he shot a deputy?” Crye’s thought process changed in 2004 when Young was attacked by his father. “I would not tolerate my children being abused,” she said. “I didn’t want the abuse to impact their life, but seeing the film, I realized it had I just didn’t recognize it.” Crye’s children are healthy and on their own now, but she wants to make sure other families don’t go through what hers did. “There is hope for you to be happy and free,” she said. “Sunshine and God’s blessings are on

The first United States amateur performance of, “Our House: The Madness Musical,” will be presented at Coshocton High School at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 9-10. “The important point that I really want to get out there is that this musical has never been done in the U.S. before,” said Kris Hardesty, who is directing the play. “It is really a coup for our community.” The play is by Tim Firth and has music and lyrics by MADNESS. “I saw the show online and had read about it in some trade journals,” Hardesty said. “I thought it would be a good show for high school kids since it is a coming-of-age story. Also, it toured the U.K. and won an Olivier award so I knew it was a good show.” The musical, appropriate for ages 8 and up, is about how a decision made on the night of Joe Casey’s 16th birthday impacts his life. “Joe is kind of young and stupid,” said Alex Lawrence, a senior at Coshocton who plays Joe. “He gets in trouble trying to impress a girl.” Lawrence explained that Joe has a bad and good side. “Bad Joe is kind of over confident and cocky,” Lawrence said. “Good Joe has self image problems and probably doesn’t see himself as well as he should.” Another actor in the musical is Karah Lain, a junior who plays Sarah. “Sarah is kind of the girl next door, but as the musical goes on she matures and you see she is more than just the average girl,” Lain said. She also said the musical has a big coming of age theme. “It shows that decisions you make when you are growing up can affect the rest of your life,” Lain said. Lain and Lawrence are just two of the 40 to 50 seventh through 12th grade students helping to put on the play. “We even have students being ushers and are involving the staff as much as we can,” Hardesty said. Spring is in the air. Children are invited to help it along Saturday, March 3 by creating a work of art featuring those harbingers of spring—birds. Students will begin by learning the characteristics of a bird (like wings) that separates it from other vertebrae, and the reason species of birds may vary in the way they look. After checking out Audubon’s depictions of birds, artists will make their own picture of a bird using torn paper. Color and form will be emphasized. The class will be led by JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum staff member and artist, Jenn Bush. Class fee is $8, $7 for Friends of the Museum. This class is geared toward younger children, kindergarten through fourth grade. Reservation deadline is Sunday, Feb. 26. For information contact the JohnsonHumrickhouse Museum at 622-8710 or e-mail at jhmuseum@jhmuseum.org. The museum is open from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The museum is located in Roscoe Village at 300 N. Whitewoman St. The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

1952
February 24th, 1952 The Coshocton Tribune had the latest in printing technology. A teletypesetter had been delivered to the office. The process, which used perforated tape to operate linotype machines, was at the time the fastest and most modern means of production of the print industry. Tape came into the Tribune office on an automatic United Press telegraph machine with all world-wide news coverage. As each telegraph story was received, the tape for the story was spooled and hung on the telegraph board and as the editors decided which stories to publish, the loop for that tape was sent to the composing room.
1962
February 24th, 1962 The Redskins had crushed the Lancaster Golden Gales 65-52 in their final Central Ohio League Basketball game. This win gave Coshocton a 2-8 league mark, putting them in a three-way tie for fourth place in the final COL standings with Chillicothe and Lancaster while getting them off on the right foot for tournament action the next week. Larry Robinson started off the game with two quick fielders, which sent the ‘Skins over the top. They were ahead of the game by two points at the end of the first quarter, but picked up speed in the second quarter and never faltered.
1972
February 27th, 1972 The Coshocton Sherriff’s Department arrested more than 100 people in one day and then set them free as part of the Jaycee’s third annual Heart Fund ‘Jail ‘n Bail’. That year’s goal was $2,000 and they exceeded that goal by $232, raising $728 more than the previous year. Prisoners were arrested when someone made a donation of $10 for their arrest. Their bail was set at $25. A cake was delivered to one prisoner during the day, but upon examination, the police found it contained a file. Many prisoners also escaped, but were recaptured later. Pledges were also made over the phone.
1982
February 28th, 1982 Some pre-schoolers at Humpty Dumpty Child Care had a run-in with the law. As they climbed into the back seat of the Sherriff’s cruiser and the deputy turned on the siren, some children covered their ears while one little girl started to cry. But most were laughing and giggling because instead of going to jail, they were taken back to their classroom where they were given coloring books about the friendly policeman. That week, the kids had learned about community helpers and Deputy John Mosier talked to the kids about crossing the street, avoiding offers from strangers, and finding a policeman if they were ever lost. All information was obtained from microfilm of the Coshocton Tribune at the Coshocton County Library.
