News - Views - Reviews MP Kim Rudd Announces Federal Investment in Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation to Help Women Entrepreneurs Government of Canada invests $2 billion to double the amount of women-owned businesses by 2025 August 8, 2019 - The Government of Canada is advancing MP Kim Rudd women’s economic empowerment with the first ever Women Entrepreneurship Strategy, a $2-billion investment that seeks to double the number of women-owned businesses by 2025. Kim Rudd, Member of Parliament for Northumberland—Peterborough South, joined local women entrepreneurs and business leaders today to share how the federal government is helping women succeed. MP Rudd announced a $1,436,500 investment in Northumberland Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) to support the development of a FinTech-driven lending platform which will provide an easy, online application process and instant decisions on commercial loan applications up to $50,000 prioritizing investment in innovative women-owned and women-led enterprises in Eastern Ontario. The FinTech lending platform will launch November 4th, 2019. Successful recipients will be automatically inducted into a concurrent program providing advisory support services, networking opportunities, accelerator space and entrepreneurial skills development through the Venture13 innovation and entrepreneurship centre. The objective of this new fintech-driven women’s entrepreneurship program is to close existing service and access to capital gaps in Eastern Ontario to help to ensure underrepresented women successfully start, scale up and expand their ventures with dedicated financing and strategy support services. The Women Entrepreneurship Strategy compliments the Government of Canada’s efforts to advance gender equality, which include addressing pay equity, providing more affordable childcare and putting an end to gender-based violence. Advancing gender equality has the potential to add $150 billion in incremental GDP to the Canadian economy by 2026.

Opening 3rd “Vinnies” Thrift Shop Location Downtown Location on George St. Opening August 24, 2019

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) Peterborough will be opening a new and third "Vinnies - Feel Good Shopping" thrift store on Saturday, August 24, 2019. The new store is located at 539 George St. N., at the intersection of McDonnel St. and George St. This location is in addition to the Erskine Ave. store, which recently celebrated its 8th anniversary, as well as a second store in Lakefield on Queen St. "We're thrilled to be opening another Vinnies," said Mike Warren, Store Committee Chair. "The local community has been incredibly supportive over the years of the work we do at the Food Pantry, and Vinnies is the key component to keeping up with demand." In 2018, SSVP Peterborough served 20,042 individuals at the food pantry — over 6,700 of these clients were children. Warren asked residents to consider SSVP Peterborough throughout the year, "When someone is cleaning out their closets, or their child grows out of their clothing, or they're moving, we hope they keep us in mind." The George St. location will be open Monday - Friday, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. An accessible entrance has been incorporated, and will be completed in September.
