Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley. “They have supported us throughout the years with product which we have sold at the ReStore and we have used their donated products in our home builds which has helped reduce expenses.” The funds generated from this social enterprise pays organizational costs and covers the bulk of the building expenses. The ReStore relies on donations of new and used items such as building supplies, furniture, kitchen cupboards, appliances, and flooring products. Taggart said this year’s donation couldn’t of come at a better time. Habitat for Humanity recently announced their 2014 Home Build will take place on Larin Avenue in Cornwall for the Mondoux Family. “We are beginning our fundraising campaign for this year’s Home Build and the additional revenue this will yield through our ReStore is a great start,” said Taggart. FAST FACTS (provided by Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley) Founded in 1998, Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley is a non-profit organization working towards a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live. With the help of countless community volunteers, donors and community partners Habitat for Humanity has built local homes for 10 families, providing 25 children with safe,

decent and affordable housing. These homes are sold to Partner Families they are not given away. Partner Families must first qualify for a home. They must be employed and willing to partner with Habitat for Humanity. Families must be willing to preform sweat equity (volunteer hours on a Habitat related project). This takes the place of a traditional financial down payment. By building homes at low cost, requiring no down payment, and not charging interest on the mortgage, Habitat for Humanity is able to provide an opportunity, or a “hand up”, to families that would not otherwise qualify for a conventional mortgage. The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments go into a fund that is used to build more homes. The more homes that exist, the more cash flow there is for future home builds. This “revolving fund” fuels exponential growth in the number of houses that are built over time. Habitat for Humanity Seaway Valley ReStore is located at 1775 Myers Rd. in Bonville (at the flashing yellow light on Hwy 138) and is open to the public 7 days a week from 9 AM – 5 PM. As all items are donated to the ReStore, purchases are all tax-free. A local pick up service is available to those interested in donating unwanted, sellable items. As a registered charity, tax receipts can be issued for donations to the ReStore where the value of the tax receipt is determined by the ReStore Manager.
