Welcome

IN THIS ISSUE

Hello and welcome to your New Year edition of the Cornfield Magazine.

Here at Cornfield we are excited to welcome another 12 months filled with the exciting events, gigs and exhibitions our city has to offer. The first of our 2018 issues includes a glorious feature exploring the ways we can all accomplish a happier, healthier New Year. We consider the ways to achieve peace of mind through the practice of mindfulness, and look at the natural products designed to help revitalise and replenish tired winter skin.

Our striking covers this month, courtesy of the BBC/Caryn Mandabach Productions/Tiger Aspect Drama, feature shots from the Brummie-based phenomenon, Peaky Blinders. In a double page feature, we take a look back at the latest jawdropping series and the fantastic additions to the cast, including Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody. If the finale of Peaky Blinders IV left you gasping for more gangster-filled action, check out our critical reflection on the series to-date.

This month we chatted to Strictly’s Anton Du Beke following the release of his much-anticipated debut album, From The Top. A blend of contemporary covers and 1940s classics, the album creates a sound that guarantees to have you dancing to your heart’s content. Dedicated to the late, great Sir Forsyth, From The Top celebrates the shared love of swing held between Bruce and Anton, as well as paying tribute to Anton’s wife, without whom, “Nothing would be possible.”

“

I'd never had lashes before going to Anna, not the girly girl type, but after my first set I was hooked. I've had both classic and Russian volume both done amazingly. Anna is easy to get on with and even goes that little bit extra (escorting me to the toilet with eyes closed in middle of treatment). The new place is very cosy and relaxing and I'm sure I'll continue to be a regular client. Thanks Anna for transforming me.

How to Keep your

New Year's Resolutions

It's traditional to start the New Year off with a comprehensive list of resolutions, albeit, an often unachievable list. Most of us desire to eat healthier, exercise more and cut out ‘sins’, and set targets in an attempt to achieve these (difficult) goals. As the weeks progress, it's also traditional for us keen, well-intentioned individuals to lose track of our goals and move further and further away from our ultimate targets. But, how do we resolve this resolution-quitting, frankly frustrating problem? The first solution is setting targets that are actually achievable. We have all made the inevitable mistake of compiling lists of insurmountable resolutions in an attempt to tackle the upcoming year. More often than not, these lists contain resolutions only the most switched-on, overachieving organisation-fanatic might accomplish. No matter how good our intentions might be, New Year's resolutions often fade to a distant memory within the first few weeks of January. Here's a few simple ways to ensure you stick to your resolutions as much as humanly possible in 2018, to give you a bigger chance of becoming a better person this New Year.

Be realistic Don't set unattainable targets. It's easy enough to say, “I'm going to quit smoking this year, forever” and, “I won't let another drop of alcohol touch my lips in 2018”, but in reality these huge life changes – and they are pretty huge – will be extremely difficult to stick to (especially bad habits that stem from stress-induced states). Instead, be realistic about your ability to quit cold turkey. Most likely, these goals will be achieved over a longer period of time than in just a few short weeks – and this isn't necessarily a terrible thing. Instead of vowing to never eat a chocolate bar again, set a goal to significantly cut down your intake of whatever it might be you wish to banish from your life. It's perfectly fine (and natural) to struggle to give up items you have thus far relied on to get you through your daily life. By setting more achievable targets such as, “I will cut down my daily amount of 'x' each month”, by the end of 2018 you will have come closer in leaps and bounds to your ultimate goal.

Include your loved ones Setting goals to achieve the best version of you is wonderful. However, mixing-in resolutions that also help loved ones around you is the way forward for New Year's vows. Rather than pledging to join your local gym that you

14 | Cornfield Magazine

fine-rightly know you will visit once before never mentioning again, try a resolution that makes others feel good, as well as you. Call your parents. Arrange a coffee with colleagues once a week. Spend more time with your children on the weekends. Prioritise the people who you value and care about most in life, and set your goals to show them how much you appreciate them. Honestly, this tactic will make you feel much better than any running machine ever could.

Don't be disheartened Giving up something you enjoy, or rely upon, is an extremely difficult and arduous task. When making your resolutions, take into account the fact that you might, at some point, relapse back to your old habits. However, this does not make you a bad person or a failure. It simply makes you human. As long as you keep your target in clear sight, and stick to your goals 98% of the time, eventually you will get there. By making your resolutions this way, you won't feel absolutely disheartened by your late-night trip to the fridge for a Cadbury Dairy Milk bar or a mid-week after-work beer and give up completely. You will instead take your natural human inclination to resort to your comfort items on the chin, and eventually move on from relying upon these items, one step at a time. As long as you are actively trying to achieve your goals and are focused on your intentions, you will progress! With these key ideas in mind, remain positive and enthusiastic towards your goals, and make 2018 your best year yet.

Practicing

Mindfulness Find Peace of Mind

Mindfulness is a practice that enables us to change the way we think and deal with certain situations and experiences, in a positive way. Being mindful can help us to manage difficult or stressful events and encourage us to make constructive choices. Stemming from practices within Buddhism and contemplative Asian traditions, the practice of mindfulness has been used as a tool to help to improve mental health for centuries. Practicing mindfulness can have a significant impact upon emotional health and mental wellbeing. As well as decreasing stress levels, achieving mindfulness can improve performance skills, enhance concentration levels and reduce anxiety.

What is mindfulness? "Mindfulness is an awareness of our thoughts and feelings as they happen moment to moment." - Professor Mark Williams (former director of the Oxford Mindfulness Centre) When we become more aware of our surroundings and feelings, we are able to easily recognise and acknowledge stress and anxiety. This in turn allows us to tackle these emotions more effectively. Due to the contemplative nature of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), the UK Government’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recommended the practice for people who suffer with depression. Research has shown mindfulness can help to prevent depressive feelings, and future bouts of depression. When practicing mindfulness, our attention should be brought to the sensations that surround us, and we should concentrate on observing our environment. Being mindful allows us to take a break from stressful situations, and move into a more contemplative state. As well as practicing mindfulness throughout daily life, it can be effective to designate specific times in which to complete mindful practices. It is possible to combine mindful practices with activities such as yoga, meditation and tai chi. Paying attention to our breathing and developing a consciousness of our thoughts can help us to gain a better understanding of ourselves, and in turn positively change the way we view our emotions.

Yoga Yoga can help to improve balance, flexibility, co-ordination and strength, and as it isn't particularly strenuous, people of many different ages and abilities can perform it. Adults who are prone to falls may particularly benefit from yoga, as the

16 | Cornfield Magazine

activity strengthens the lower body and reduces weakness in knees and ankles. For sufferers of arthritis, yoga can help to increase flexibility and strength whilst reducing pain. Certain yoga positions may not be suitable for people with severe arthritis, or a similar health condition - always check with your doctor to find out beforehand.

Tai Chi Tai Chi can help to reduce stress and improve mobility, posture and balance. The practice was originally developed in China as a martial art, and has since been taught around the world as an exercise known to have a positive impact on general health and wellbeing. Tai Chi movements can be adapted to suit people with a disability or health condition, including wheel-chair users. It is possible, however, as with almost every exercise, that Tai Chi might not be suitable for people who are pregnant or suffer with chronic back pain or osteoporosis – again, check with your doctor before performing Tai Chi.

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy There is a huge variety of ways for people to learn mindfulness, and these can be tailored to suit individual preferences and lifestyles. For example, a range of mindfulness apps and audiobooks are available, as well as online courses, face-to-face courses, and books. Visit www.bemindful.co.uk/learn-mindfulness for more information on how to start a mindfulness course, or find a mindfulness teacher in your area on the online directory.

Our forward-thinking clinic will ensure all patients feel relaxed and at ease, and banish any apprehensions and reservations first-time clients might have. The male grooming industry has grown rapidly in recent years, and at Dentelle we are at the forefront of providing aesthetic skincare solutions for men. “Men don't talk about skin care much, and I am one of them. Furthermore, I am not the type to gush. However, following my HydraFacial with Clare at Dentelle I am compelled to do both! It was the first time I have ever had a clinical facial and I didn’t know what to expect, but Clare eased me through the six steps, which take just under one hour in total. What I experienced was soothing, cleansing, moisturising, non-invasive, non-irritating and thoroughly relaxing. I looked and felt more youthful, fresh-faced, and rejuvenated. I will be returning to Dentelle as I was impressed, and I don't impress easily!” - Steve from Solihull.

The

Detox Myth In recent years, the buzzword 'detox' has captivated consumers and fitness-addicts across the globe. But what exactly is detoxing? The Collins English Dictionary defines detoxing as a "treatment that is intended to remove poisonous or harmful substances from your body," that is "given to people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol in order to stop them from being addicted." The word detoxing, however, has been taken away from the medical realm of rehabilitation and instead has been redefined in the health and fitness industry as a way to banish harmful toxins that ‘build up’ in the body. This marketing myth aims to convince unsuspecting buyers to purchase various 'detoxing kits'. Put simply, detox dietary claims are often very exaggerated, completely ill informed, and actually are often more damaging and harmful than beneficial. A prolonged lack of protein (as suggested by many detox plans) can result in a weakened immune system, and has the potential to break down muscles. Fasting for periods of time can appear to result in weight loss, but this is simply loss of water, rather than fat. By not eating healthily or regularly, you are likely to feel symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness, nausea and irritability. Depriving your body of essential foods and nutrients through strict detoxing methods is in itself potentially dangerous. Qualified, registered dietitians have dismissed many claims made by so-called detoxing gurus, and instead promote simple, healthy, balanced lifestyles.

The Truth Eating healthily significantly increases energy levels, improves the functioning of liver, and has a beneficial impact upon skin condition, appearance, and complexion. Physical changes to appearance can in turn promote positive emotional health. By making changes to our daily lifestyle and eating habits, it is possible to boost our overall wellbeing and secure a healthier future in years to come. "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well." - Virginia Woolf Eating healthily is about balance. Instead of falling for the 'detox myth' and subjecting your body to unhealthy crash diets or ‘quick fixes’, begin your healthy lifestyle this New Year. We've all heard the positive effects of eating '5 a day' and exercising regularly – and it really is that simple.

Cook from Scratch Although it seem like a very time-consuming task, unsuitable for busy lifestyles, cooking from scratch can be made easy. By creating meals from a range

of raw, organic ingredients, we know exactly what is going into our meals. Cooking from scratch gives us an opportunity to develop cooking skills and explore the exciting flavours and ingredients on offer in the wonderful world of food. Signing up to monthly subscriptions can help to alleviate the pressure of shopping for a variety different ingredients. A Diverse Diet It isn’t only fruit and vegetables that are good for you! To ensure you keep a regular, balanced diet, make sure you fill your kitchen with a variety of fish, lean meats, low fat dairy products, fruit, vegetables and nuts. Eat food filled with nutrients such as fibre, minerals, proteins and good fats to ensure you provide your body with enough energy and goodness. Stick to recommended portion sizes, and always read the label to check saturated fats, sugars, and salts content.

Drink H2O Drink plenty of water. It's that simple. Water is completely natural, free, cheap and good for you! Replace fizzy energy drinks packed full of sugar with a glass of milk or water – this is especially important for children. If you don't particularly enjoy drinking water, try adding a lime wedge or drink a bottle of sparkling water. It’s recommended we drink six to eight glasses of fluid every day – and water is the best option! Free Debt Help on your Doorstep Worried about your finances in 2018? Spent more than you anticipated this Christmas? The CAP Debt Help project might be for you. When financial trouble hits, it’s easy to feel alone. Local debt counselling charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is here to help. Following the success of CAP’s Debt Help project, launched last year in partnership with Dickens Heath Church, the volunteers will continue to help people through their journey towards financial freedom. Christmas can be a very strenuous time financially. With the burden of extra costs such as food, gifts and travelling (to name but a few), many people find themselves struggling in the New Year. Whatever your situation might be the CAP team are on hand to give you the guidance you need in 2018.

“Every week we see people who think that there is no way out of their money problems and every week we offer them a solution that really works. If you are struggling with debt then there is hope. We can help you.” Pam Stableford, Solihull CAP Centre Manager

Help to relieve your post-Christmas stress now, and sign up for a consultation with CAP’s free counseling service to start your journey towards financial freedom. Don’t be left feeling helpless. Call Christians Against Poverty’s freephone number 0800 328 0006 or visit www.capuk.org for more information.

The Debt Help project aims to relieve the stress of postChristmas debt for all clients this January. Experience has shown that there is always a way out of financial debt, and no financial difficulty is too big or too small to deal with. CAP volunteers are on hand to help those experiencing debt problems in the New Year to manage their financial difficulties. By providing expert advice free of charge, regardless of age, faith, gender or background, the CAP Debt Help project is open for all. HOKA ONE ONE ARAHI Trainers TRIED & TESTED Available from www.hokaoneone.eu £105.00

Known for its groundbreaking approach to running, HOKA ONE ONE tackles stability head-on with the ARAHI trainers. The Cornfield team tested the trainers in a bid to test the impact of the J-Frame technology™, designed to further enhance the active foot frame.

The Avocado Cookbook The Present Finder Available from www.thepresentfinder.co.uk £9.99

“I was shocked at how lightweight the ARAHI trainers are. The trainers are extremely well cushioned, and not once did I experience any uncomfortable ‘new shoe’ symptoms such as blisters or rubbing. The trainers were perfect for running - I even upped my running regime to squeeze in a few extra runs a week. The ARAHI trainers are supportive on my feet, and make me feel very stable on uneven ground. The vibrant, colourful appearance of my trainers ensured I was easy to spot when running next to busy roads, and when exercising in the evening. Amazing product.” – Evie Kissack

Lorna Jane Astro 7/8 Tights Moonlight Print Available from www.lornajane.co.uk £85.00

“What I liked most about the ARAHI trainers was the cushioned sole. The ARAHI design seemed to hug my feet and mould perfectly to their shape. In the past, I have found running trainers are not protective enough for the soles of my feet and this has sometimes led me to skip exercising. However, these trainers did just the opposite. The padding and durability of the soles of the trainers is fantastic. As a busy parent, I don’t get a lot of time to exercise alone free from distractions, so it’s important my time spent working out is as efficient as possible. The ARAHI trainers were a very secure fit and allowed me to exercise with confidence and stability - I highly recommend them!” – Adelle Toomer

Brandwood Clinic

Changing Lives Every Day: Sam’s Story Director of Cornfield Publishing, Sam Fraser, has undergone Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) with Brandwood Clinic at their clinic in Monkspath. After many years of feeling self-conscious and embarrassed about his hair loss, Sam has recently completed a three-stage process with the aim to rejuvenate his natural hairline and in turn, enhance his overall confidence. Brandwood Clinic’s director-practitioners Paul Clark and Simon Lane are two of the most experienced and highly regarded SMP specialists in the world. The two experts created many of the techniques in popular use and developed the most natural approach to replicating realistic-looking hair follicles. Paul and Simon ensure clients’ hair is matched and blended to create natural and realistic outcomes. As innovators and artists, Brandwood Clinic’s trained practitioners produce effective hairlines using a natural organic pigment to perfectly replicate a hair follicle at its shortest length.

Stage One: Visible Results “I hope, by the end of the treatment, the result will have a noticeable affect on my confidence and in turn, my lifestyle. I already feel less self-conscious about my hairline than before, after only the first step of the process!”

Stage Two: Enhanced Confidence “Now, my hairline looks much more defined, and the areas where I experienced thinning before have been evened out almost completely. I didn’t think there could be another stage – as the end results of the second stage are so great.”

Stage Three: Final Outcome “When I first saw the final results of the SMP treatment, I was completely blown away. The difference, although striking to me, still remains subtle in the sense that it is not obvious I have had any treatment at all – it looks completely natural. “I want to thank Paul and Simon for helping me to regain a level of confidence I have not felt in years. The difference to my hairline is outstanding. I now have a ‘feathered’ texture instead of a receding hairline, and it comes as no surprise to me that the technicians at Brandwood created this look – it looks completely different to other examples of SMP I have seen from other clinics, it is miles ahead of the curve! “The feathered hairline I received gives the appearance of a close-shave, and the thinner, balding patches across my scalp have been fully filled out. I am in awe of how authentic the treatment looks. But, more than the physical changes, I am most impressed with the affect the treatment at Brandwood has had upon my self-esteem. My feelings towards my personal appearance have completely changed! I now feel happy with my outward appearance, and have regained a little part of myself. To some, thinning hair and baldness might not seem like a huge deal, but for sufferers it can be very damaging to self-confidence levels. No longer do I worry about looking older, or whether my hair will completely fall out. Now, all I focus on is feeling happy and healthy. The results are priceless, and I will always be grateful for the brilliant skill and the dedication of the team at Brandwood Clinic.”

SMP Solutions Scalp Micropigmentation is becoming an increasingly popular means of addressing hair loss for both men and women. The procedure replicates hair follicles at their shortest length and can either enhance your existing look or create a fresh appearance of closely-cut hair. Whether it’s a receding hairline, diffuse weakening of the hair on the crown, Alopecia Areata or total baldness; there is an SMP procedure and hairline choice to create your desired outcome. SMP works for any man experiencing hair loss, regardless of age or ethnicity. A noninvasive process, SMP rejuvenates both hairlines and clients, reversing the effects that baldness and thinning hair can have upon an individual’s self-confidence. Amongst their treatments are many exclusives, so advanced that they are difficult for other technicians to copy. The combination of experience, artistic ability and skill allows Paul & Simon to deliver authentic-looking techniques, such as the 3D Scatter Technique. This development alone, with its textured effect and unparalleled realism, revolutionised SMP treatments.

Peaky

Blinders IV

A Look Back at the Acclaimed New Series *Warning – contains minor plot spoilers

The highly acclaimed, gangster-based drama recently returned to our screens for a much-anticipated fourth series, seeing the reappearance of several deplorable characters, joined by new notable names. Directed by David Caffrey, produced by Joe Donaldson, and written by Steven Knight, the fourth series of Peaky Blinders combines the exceptional minds of several renowned creatives in a formidable plotline filled of action-fuelled drama. The fourth series of the popular saga first aired on BBC Two back in November 2017, following high expectations from fans of Steven Knight’s Birmingham-based drama. The new series saw the introduction of Academy Award-winning actors Aidan Gillen and Adrien Brody to the already-impressive cast, giving the series a new, intensified ‘Mafia’ edge. Peaky Blinders originally shot to popularity following the initial release of the first series back in 2013, when the nation was introduced to the nefarious activities of Tommy Shelby, played sublimely by actor Cillian Murphy. The first episode of series one quickly captured the nation’s attention, featuring fearful criminal organisations, missing machine-guns, and shell-shocked ex-soldiers. Unsurprisingly, the series was crowned a roaring success, adding praised actors such as Tom Hardy and Aiden Gidden to the mix as new episodes were produced. The fourth series, set in December 1925, began with the re-introduction of the audience to notorious Tommy Shelby OBE, having now reached a new level of unrivalled authority. Since becoming distanced from his closest friends and family both physically and emotionally, Tommy is shown to be residing in a country house, away from the Small Heath slum in which he grew up and subsequently ruled for many years. After receiving a cataclysmic, anonymous letter on Christmas Eve in his new home, the former gangster fears for his family’s safety and vows to return to Birmingham to tackle the awaiting danger. The fourth series wonderfully blends graphic violence with an intimate portrayal of family estrangement, as viewers are shown the attempts made by the Shelby family to reconcile despite many burning tensions and underlying disputes. The pressure to fight for survival and resist annihilation from an unprecedented threat reaches a climactic point in the series, resulting in nail-biting, intense watching.

“It’s a very different world from that in which we live today. Everything is monitored now. None of this could exist on that level. I think that fascinates people and there’s a freedom in that. It’s stylised, it’s grounded and it’s very compelling.” Adrien Brody in an interview with the BBC In an interview for the BBC, Cillian Murphy explains the emotional challenges facing his character Tommy Shelby in the latest series. “At the beginning of series four, the family are fractured. Tommy is isolated, understandably after what went down at the end of series three. Time has lapsed and they’re all getting on with their lives but not in the way that we normally associate with the Peaky Blinders.” Murphy goes on to explain, “Emotionally, the family have to try and put the recent past behind them and find a way of reconnecting, particularly with what has happened between Tommy and Polly.” Having betrayed his family at the end of series three, Tommy is faced with juggling the repercussions of his master plan, and must deal with the affect of his actions upon his family and, in particular, Polly. The issue of regaining trust is a common thread sewn through each episode of the new series, linking even the most minor characters within the plot together. In the latest series, we see Tommy’s empire has significantly grown. Now the owner of two factories, the infamous gangster-cumbusinessman must come to terms with

handling a general strike and balance his business stresses with his personal conflicts. Adrien Brody’s appearance in the fourth series, as Mafia member Luca Changretta, raises the plotline to another level and brings the gangster antics into a completely new league.

“It’s not just bravado,” Brody tells the BBC, “Luca Changretta’s not someone you want to be at odds with.” And the actor isn’t wrong. Having grown up in Queens in New York alongside Italian American culture, Brody was able to bring his personal experiences to the fascinating character, and deliver a spine-chilling performance. Despite his frankly extensive

SOLIHULL 68pg JAN 18_Layout 1 19/12/2017 11:41 Page 30

repertoire of character portrayals, Brody has never actually played a character much like Luca Changretta. The actor explains in his interview with the BBC that things have become personal between Tommy and Luca, meaning ego, entitlement, and overwhelming senses of superiority create severe bursts of tension. With regards to acting style, Brody has spoken previously about Steven Knight’s ability to write material that, “Sings and speaks to you, and allows your imagination to run with it,” thus allowing the character to “become something really wonderful.” Certainly, the American’s performance brings an added dimension to the series, sitting perfectly against the other remarkable characters, which are acted phenomenally.

Peaky

Speakeasy

Peaky Blinders-inspired bar opens in Birmingham City Centre

But, why is it that audiences are so compelled by the show? Perhaps it’s a combination of the gritty, raw acting styles that bring the sensational storyline to life, paired with the intimate camera angles that give glimpses into the underground world of Birmingham in the 1920s. It could indeed be the complicated, complex plotline written by Knight or the star-studded cast – not to mention it’s set in our brilliant city. More than likely, it’s a combination the many listed elements prior, including the unparalleled work of the crew and cast, that makes the series such a riveting and addictive watch. The fourth series of Peaky Blinders, with its (at times) beautiful cinematography, meticulous attention to historical detail, and impeccable cast once again sets the programme aside from others of its kind in the most recent series. If you haven’t already, the series is one well worth binge watching. Tom O’Rourke, landlord of the Peaky Speakeasy, recently opened his brand new venture – a Peaky Blinders-themed secret bar hidden underneath The Peaky Blinder pub, in Birmingham. Inspired by Steven Knight’s critically-acclaimed Birmingham saga, O’Rourke has transformed the former Hole in the Wall pub into a secret 1920s speakeasy bar. The former historical pub has been given a new lease of life since closing its doors over 30 years ago. Punters are granted access to the secret bar via a sliding bookcase, giving the illusion of a real illicit establishment. The secret speakeasy underground bar will be open daily from 7pm, offering special events throughout the year with nods to the BBC Two drama, including 1920s food, music and of course, drink! Customers visiting the pub wearing the famous Peaky Blinders caps have the chance to make it onto the Peaky Blinders Hall of Fame – a wall of pictures featuring guests wearing amazing costumes, stars from the show, and actor lookalikes. The new Brummie bar is definitely a tourist spot for all fans of the Peaky Blinders series. Find the speakeasy bar below The Peaky Blinder, in Dale End. One happy customer was Sharon Sandhar who sent us these fantastic images and lovely feedback:

New Year, New Roof! “ Stay warm in your conservatory this winter

with GreenSpace

Just thought I would share some pictures of my beautiful conservatory now all ready for Christmas. The roof is beautiful and the conservatory is totally transformed.

Conservatory transformation in less than one day! Are you a homeowner? Does your home have a conservatory? Is your conservatory only pleasant to sit in for a couple of weeks at the beginning of the summer and a couple of weeks at the start of Autumn? Is your conservatory more like a fridge in the winter? If you’ve answered yes any of the last four questions then read on! For many conservatory owners, enjoying your conservatory is a bit of a skill. During the summer, even here, in England with the unpredictable British weather, our conservatories become too hot and uncomfortable to sit in. Fast forward to mid October when the nights start to draw in and the mornings are colder, suddenly, your conservatory that was too hot to sit in a couple of weeks before, becomes too drafty and chilly to enjoy without the aid of a hot water bottle or extra layers. If you are really lucky, you may get a couple of weeks at the end of September, start of October when the ultimate temperature for conservatory enjoyment is upon us but be warned, blink and you may miss it! So what’s the solution? Many of us will have tried blinds (they are great for reducing glare but offer limited insulation properties), some of us will have replaced polycarbonate roofs with glass, but still face the same issues. Some of us will have looked to replace our roofs with a solid roof - which using traditional methods is a very messy and time consuming and could even result in having structural changes to your existing conservatory structure. In short, it becomes a MASSIVE UPHEAVAL. So this is where GreenSpace come in. We specialise in lightweight insulated roofing panels. Now we know this doesn’t sound overly exciting, but they work! Our panels are strong and offer 8 times more insulation than a polycarbonate roof. What’s more, because they are lightweight, there is no need to strengthen your existing conservatory structure, plus for extra peace of mind, they come with a ten year guarantee. For most of our customers, the benefits of having a Green Space roof put on to their conservatory, means that they can stop using the space as a dumping ground for old toys and furniture or a glorified fridge or greenhouse and actually start using the space as a proper room. A once unhabitable space can become a gorgeous dining area or a second lounge - perfect for relaxing all year round and ideal when the extended family are over for lunch. With fitting taking place in less than a day, it’s easy to see what a difference a day makes! Contact us today on or find us online at

auto BIOGRAPHIES

McLaren 570GT The letters ‘G’ and ‘T’ are used far too often on cars. And, yes, I’m referring to a grand tourer rather than a gin and tonic. Some automakers think that by sticking a ‘GT’ badge on the boot lid it makes their product instantly irresistible. Many are wrong about that. But McLaren isn’t. Indeed, the 570GT is so far from wrong, it’s untrue. McLaren’s 570GT is one of the best cars the British firm makes and it’s undeniably the most multitalented sports car, too. You can probably tell I was utterly blown away with the 570GT when I tested it on British bitumen recently. Fundamentally, McLaren has taken the awesome 570S and has injected it with an extra dose of civility. The result is the 570GT – a machine that’s as refined as possible without swapping for a smaller power unit and additional seats. The 570GT even looks like the 570S, but there are some major differences between the models. The latter’s flying buttresses have been replaced by curved bodywork that comprises a glass hatch. There’s a respectable 220-litres of load space under there, meaning the 570GT has a genuine practical edge to it. The car also has a glass roof that makes the cabin airy and full of mood-enhancing light. The engine, normally on display in the McLaren 570S, is tastefully concealed under a leather floor in the 570GT. While, inside, the car gets extra soundproofing, soft-close doors and electric heated seats. If that’s not enough to start justifying those letters ‘G’ and ‘T’, the 570GT is equipped with a more hushed exhaust system and softer suspension. The steering is also milder than the 570S’. These changes make the McLaren 570GT a car you could use every day. The ride is pliable enough to make our pothole-ridden roads bearable, and motorway cruising din is subdued enough so that your ears don’t bleed. But, just because you could use the GT on a daily basis doesn’t mean this is a lacklustre McLaren. Oh no. In every other way, the

570GT does everything else a full-fat McLaren does. And, most importantly, it looks one of the meanest, sexiest cars out there. It’s a major head-turner, that’s for sure. With just a quick stab of the 570GT’s starter button, the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 lump barks into life. Depress the gas pedal and the increase of velocity is hard-hitting, due to the 570 horses under the lid. And snapping up and down the cogs via the paddle-mounted gears-shifters is a real smile-inducer. Zero to 62mph is done in an insanely rapid 3.4 seconds, while the top speed is a licencelosing 204mph. Regardless of the additional luxuries added to the GT, this McLaren’s cabin stays broadly the same as in the 570S’. It’s a work of genius in contemporary sports car interior design and a long way from the chaotic button-fest of the Ferrari 488 or the unemotional ambience in Porsche’s 911 Turbo. You sit near to the ground but erect in the 570GT, so visibility is

very good. And, as mentioned earlier, it’s comfortable enough to be used as a realworld form of transport. While the alterations from the 570S to GT could be seen as fairly minor, they make a substantial difference to the McLaren driving experience. The British sports car maker has constructed a machine that is as calm as possible, without kicking any of the theatre to the kerb.

Dancing on Ice Returns by Alex Dudley

The dancing spectacle, Dancing on Ice, will make a return for 2018 for the first time in over four years. The show is back by popular demand and will be hosted by the much-loved double act, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. This year’s main celebrities are Love Islander Kem Cetinay, and Coronation Street legends Anthony Cotton and Brooke Vincent. Dancing on Ice sees celebrities team up with professional ice skaters to take on complex dance routines, after which the public can vote for their favourites with different couples leaving the competition week-by-week. Just think Strictly Come Dancing, but on ice! The show obviously comes with an element of danger, and the risk of injuries is very high. This makes the programme gripping, and always full of intensity. Past winners include Olympic gold medallist, Beth Tweedle, rugby star Kyran Bracken and actor/singer Ray Quinn. Quinn also won the last series which was an All-Star edition of the show. The emotional advert for this year’s series features two polar bears dancing on a frozen lake - an advert, which has been highly praised on both Twitter and Facebook. The new series is sure to be a hit! Celebrities risk it all, engaging in a highly dangerous and strenuous sport in order to wow audiences. The dazzling performances on the show always give fans something to talk to throughout the week until the next episode is aired. The judges for the show are experts in both dance and ice-skating; Olympic gold medallists Torvill and Dean headline the panel, alongside fan-favourite Jason Gardener and Diversity member, Ashley Banjo. Other celebrities taking part include Bake Off winner Candice Brown and cricket star Monty Panesar. Training for the new series has already begun and has been taking place since early November. The celebrities’ ice-skating abilities differ somewhat, and some celebrities have made no secret of the fact that they cannot even stand on ice. Rehearsals are very

demanding and tiring, and the celebrities are required to learn skills and routines very quickly. Some injuries have already been reported with both Brooke Vincent and Kem Cetinay being involved in 'bad' falls. The tenth series starts on 7th January 2018, on ITV.

Anton Du Beke on From The Top: “I want to give people songs to dance to.” Words by Evie Kissack

Cornfield’s Content Editor caught up with nationally-loved, Strictly sensation Anton Du Beke ahead of the release of his debut album From The Top, featuring old school swing classics, original songs and surprising covers. Produced by award-winning producer, Brian Rawlings, and featuring vocals from quintet The Overtones, From The Top is a wonderful collection of inspired tracks – a credit to Anton’s creative repertoire. Good afternoon Anton! How are you? Hello my love! I am fantastic, thank you! Firstly, a few congratulations are in order I’ve been listening to the new album From The Top - I think it’s fantastic. Oh thank you! I love you for that. And another big congratulations to you and your wife for your new arrivals! It’s such wonderful news to hear about the twins. Aw - thank you. How have you managed balancing Strictly, making the new album, welcoming the twins… and everything else? Well, that’s easy - I’ve got an incredible wife, Hannah, who is remarkable. She keeps everything bubbling along perfectly, and she just loves - as I do - having the twins. She’s really enjoying being a mum and nothing would be possible if it weren’t for her. She’s amazing. That’s so lovely! Now I know you’ve dedicated From the Top to a couple of very important people in your life – the first being your wife Hannah. You’ve spoken about the song ‘More’ having particular significance? Absolutely. It’s a song that I played to her early on in our relationship, and it’s such a great track. It’s just a beautiful, special song. It’s actually the song I played when she was having the babies. [Laughter] I had it on in the background. So it just – it’s one of those songs, you know – it has such a huge significance. I know the other special person you dedicated the album to, was the late, great Sir Bruce Forsyth. Absolutely, the late and incredibly great Bruce Forsyth. We did a song together a few years ago;

it’s called Me And My Shadow. We sung it on Strictly Come Dancing, which is an immense highlight for me, for both my life and career. He was just a great man, and I loved him dearly. I was privileged enough to be able to call him my friend. They say you never meet your hero, but it was completely the opposite for me really. He was the loveliest, most generous, fabulous and inspirational man I’ve ever met. We played a lot of golf together and chatted all the time… he was amazing. What an incredible tribute to his life, and how wonderful to be able to say that From The Top is dedicated to him. Well it just seemed fitting really, because we both loved the same sort of music and he was just a great guy. He was a great performer and if you love showbiz he was the ultimate showman. He was exactly as you’d want an entertainer to be. Do you know what I mean? He always looked great, he always looked sharp, he always had a line - whether it was for 5, 000 people at the Albert Hall or three people on the golf course. He was always entertaining. It was amazing. You’ve spoken about your shared love for swing, and the new album features some absolute swing classics. Moondance and Beyond the Sea are my personal favourites, I’ve grown up listening to these songs it’s a brilliant album. Oh I love you - you are my favourite person, by the way. [Laughter] Moondance was made with The Overtones, who are brilliant. They are just great fellas with great voices. Like you, I grew up with all of these songs, and I listened to them, and I loved them and I danced to them…the problem I had with

the album was what to leave out. I had a list as long as my arm! I’m hoping the album is so successful that they let me do another one! It’s just great tracks. We’ve done them in such a way – I mean we haven’t reinvented the wheel with them but we’ve made new arrangements. We had a wonderful orchestra, a 36-piece orchestra, which has an incredible sound, I mean, it sounds just remarkable. I love the cover of I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor. It’s so unexpected! [Laughter] Well, it’s hilarious because it was Polydor’s idea really. They wanted to throw in a couple of things – we have a brand new song in there called Nothing but Love, which is brilliant! It was written for me by Ed Drewett - who is a tremendous songwriter, I mean, he’s written for everybody. Amazing. I always wanted something a bit different as well, so we have the Arctic Monkeys cover in there. I had to try to make it work because it has such a great title, so again we put together a great vocal arrangement and swing arrangement and we had a go. And it just turned out super – I love it! It definitely did. I was listening to the album again this morning and I suddenly thought, “Hang on a minute, I know this song from somewhere…” It just fits so wonderfully with the swing classics. I will have to tell them [Polydor] that you love it, because they will be delighted. When they [Polydor] say these things, and throw ideas at you, you sometimes think, “Oh, I’m not really sure – Arctic Monkeys and Fly Me To The Moon, I’m not sure those two things are going to go well together…” And then we did the arrangement and its just great. Just great.

SOLIHULL 68pg JAN 18_Layout 1 19/12/2017 11:42 Page 53

It works perfectly. I mean I’d like to do more of that stuff, recreating songs alongside classics. I think it’s a brilliant version, so yeah; I’d like to do more. It was a lot of fun. The whole album has a really upbeat, positive feel to it. Swing music does make you want to get up and dance. What message did you want the album to give to listeners? Well, exactly that! I want people to get up and dance. I want to give people songs to dance to. I want you to take hold of your wife, or your husband, or whoever, in the kitchen, and have a little dance around to the music. Because that’s exactly what it makes me want to do. The album songs are ones that I’ve grown up listening to and dancing to, and I want people to feel the same way. I’m so delighted the album has an uplifting vibe to it as well because when you’re creating music and you’re thinking, “This is great, I’m loving this!”, just because you like it doesn’t necessarily mean other people are going to like it as well. So, the fact that people have had a positive reaction – I’m just thrilled, thank you.

So, sadly Strictly ended for you and your partner Ruth in week 7 this year. As a Strictly fan, I have to ask - what are your thoughts on this year’s show? Again, great! Every year, it’s such a massive show and goes from strength to strength. It’s just fantastic. I mean, how do you beat last year? This is always the question you end up having to ask yourself. The beginning of the following year we think, “How do we top last year?” because every year seems to be remarkable. It is just a wonderful show. I think it definitely remains relevant in today’s world of television. It’s the only time, nowadays, that a whole family, and different generations, speak the same language. And that’s the remarkable joy of Strictly Come Dancing, is that we are all in it together. If you’re sitting there with your parents, or granny, and watching Strictly, you all have your favourites and you have different reasons for loving it probably me being your personal favourite, naturally. Well, of course. So, that’s the joy of Strictly really.

I would say the album does a very similar thing – combining contemporary music from the Arctic Monkeys and swing classics, it brings the generations together also. Well that’s lovely for you to say, and I hope that that’s the case because it makes me really, really happy. I don’t want it to be specific to one generation; I want everybody to like it, of course. I think they’re great tunes, and I think that the album has an uplifting vibe, and hopefully everyone’s dancing around the kitchen to the music! That’d be great! [Laughter] What more could you want from an album? What more could you want, exactly. Merry Christmas mum! [Laughter] See the full interview online at www.cornfieldpublishing.co.uk. Anton’s debut album From The Top is out now. Buy your dancing-around-the-kitchen tracks online at www.antondubeke.tv. @TheAntonDuBeke

Now you’ve created your debut album, what are your hopes for the future? Is this just the start of your musical career? Well I’d like to create more music because I’ve enjoyed it so much. There are so many great songs that I wasn’t able to record, so I’d like to do that. I mean I’m in such a privileged position, because I’m working on Strictly Come Dancing (the best show on TV), and I get to go on tour and do my own thing, and I’ve had the opportunity to work with Polydor who are an incredible record label and company – I just really want to ask if I can do more, if that’s alright with everyone else? Thank you very much. [Laughter]
