Winter Blues

Whilst many of us do not relish the thought of winter, for an increasing number of individuals this season fills them with dread.

TO ADVERTISE IN NEXT MONTH’S ISSUE PLEASE CALL: 07917 541 117

Although the days are gradually lengthening by now, spring still feels a long way off. In recent years the worst cases have been clinically diagnosed as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). So this month I would like to offer some tips on how to overcome, or at least lessen the impact of the winter blues.

6

The first thing I would like to mention is what I call a ‘seasonal perspective’. Observing nature shows us that it is a time for slowing down and resting. However it is clear that we humans completely ignore this; because we have the electric light bulb (alias ‘Edison’s Curse) we continue a frenetic lifestyle 365 days a year. We should take time to relax, wind down and reflect on the year gone by. Yet in general we will have been working harder, partying later and more frequently and pushing ourselves beyond our natural resources. I think that this is a huge contributor to SAD. So whenever you can rest, take a nap, go for a walk or have an early night. I promise you will quickly notice the difference.

Products that I can suggest to support you physically are St. Johns Wort (Hypericum Perforatum). Already a household name due to many testimonials from people suffering with general depression, it is widely available and can be taken in capsules or drops. Always look for a good quality brand and take the whole course. My second product is a supplement of Folic Acid and B12. These two vitamins have been identified as a deficient in sufferers of depression of all types. Significant improvements have been noted when they have started taking these supplements

and either one will make a difference. Taking the two combined however seems to work to a far greater degree. The final suggestion is Aloe Vera Drinking Gel or as it is called in our house ‘liquid sunshine’. Many people take Aloe Vera for a wide range of complaints. It relieves many of today’s aches, pains and stomach problems but also improves energy levels, immune balance and moods. So I now recommend it for Winter Blues as well. Good Natural Health

Valentines

Valentines Day as we understand it now, with the sending of cards, giving of chocolates, flowers and other gifts, originated in the UK during the 18th century when the notion of celebrating romantic love on this day began, having originally been a day of celebrating early Christian saints. During the 19th century, sending a valentines card became so popular that their demand necessitated factories dedicated to producing cards with real lace and ribbons, replacing the hand crafted cards from before. It is estimated that in the USA approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year and in the UK over 25 million. And that doesn’t include the ones that are now lovingly emailed! In Japan there is a custom that women only give chocolates to men and indeed it is Valentine’s day when the chocolate companies make half their revenue. Yet it is on Christmas Eve when they celebrate romantic “date night”!

Inspiring FITNESS

Editorial

Thin & boring or fat & exciting? I have been away for a while studying different weight loss strategies and as usual, the simple things always win. I believe we started hitting challenges in the fitness and weight loss industry when we started making “products” out of everything. I think we should just be honest with people and be patient. One of the most common things I hear as a fitness professional and weight loss expert is that

Dealing with boring food

TO ADVERTISE IN NEXT MONTH’S ISSUE PLEASE CALL: 07917 541 117

If we consider most clinical weight loss trials which have been independently funded (as in not funded by the food industry) the most effective weight loss system seems to be a mainly protein and fat based diet. Calorie control is one often toted as the “most effective”, however this is misinterpreted. Calorie control is the most commonly “used” and based on the numbers of obese people in the World, isn’t working very well!

10

Based on this concept, if we are to lose weight and keep it off then the most effective way to do it is to eat meat/protein substitute, vegetables and natural fats (I don’t like using good and bad fats I prefer natural versus man made) With this being the case, the foundation of diets should be these foods. This gives us an acceptance that we are limited in our choices if we are to lose weight effectively, quickly and maintain it. You just have

“healthy eating is boring”. Now this is a tricky thing to deal with as I believe, to be honest, yes it is! The problem is that a lot of companies out there will bring out funky cook books and recipes to try and skirt round the fact that, as Tim Ferriss says, “Effective nutrition is just that, effective. It’s not meant to be fun”.

to accept this. Most top athletes and fitness professionals who know their stuff tend to follow a simple system that works like a charm....

this is the way to go. What happens then is you start to associate this behaviour to the result you get.

Eat the same things every day!

Conclusion

Well maybe not every single day, I recommend a day off every week. On a serious note I would recommend taking out the stress of trying to be creative and just stick to the same diet every day. There are a couple of reasons for this. Firstly it’s really easy to follow. Secondly, if you really know yourself, most people stumble and fall when they are trying to be clever with their diets. If you try and add a little bit of this or a little bit of that, it normally means a lot of this or a lot of that! This is particularly true when eating addictive foods like sugar and flour. So here is the system. I recommend planning six days meals and then rotating the same things over and over again. Trust me, when you get a result, it will become clear that

It can’t be that simple? Well think about it, human beings are “fit for purpose” creatures. We should in theory only eat to survive but we eat for fun. This means we create problems we should not have. If you want really impressive weight loss results, eat “fit for purpose” foods like fat and protein and then have a cheat day. Don’t complicate, don’t weigh and measure. Eat the same protein and natural fat rich foods each day and then go mad on a sugar and flour fuelled cheat day! Trust me, this system worked for me and has worked for dozens of my clients. I would rather be boring with amazing results than exciting and fat!
