Annual Report

Skills for Life. Faith for Eternity.

OVERVIEW We provide a developmentally appropriate educational experience in a Christian setting that nourishes academic growth for children two years old through eighth grade. Cornerstone Christian Academy strives to enrich each child’s life with a variety of activities in a safe and loving environment. Beginning in preschool, students are challenged to think critically, analyze the world around them, and continue developing their relationships with Christ. As they progress through elementary and middle school, students refine these principals and learn how to be seekers of Biblical truth, explorers of academic knowledge, and outstanding citizens of character.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission at Cornerstone Christian Academy is to equip students with skills for life and faith for eternity.

HEAD OF SCHOOL’S LETTER Dear Cougar Family, Cornerstone Christian Academy enjoyed a momentous 2016-2017 school year. We celebrated many accomplishments of our students, faculty, and leadership. This year, we will embark on our 14th year of delivering Skills for Life and Faith for Eternity to the children and families of Sugar Land and Fort Bend County. At Cornerstone Christian Academy, we have an expectation of extraordinary student achievement through a rigorous curriculum that is focused on innovative instructional practices. This foundation of academic excellence will continue to be cultivated through

Eric Nicholie

research based best practices in staff development along with utilizing instructional technology to facilitate teaching. We also strive to build Faith for Eternity in our children through service learning trips, daily chapel, bible study classes, and modeling Christian behavior based upon biblical principles. There is a great synergy when a community is unified by a commitment to common goals and values rooted in biblical truths, and at CCA we strive to foster that development in our students. On behalf of Cornerstone Christian Academy, I express my sincere gratitude to our donors and the many people who make CCA an exceptional school. I appreciate the families, grandparents, Board members, corporations, employees, and community members who help sustain us. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Cornerstone. I am delighted to present Cornerstone Christian Academy’s 2016-2017 Annual Report which illustrates what is occurring at school every day. Thanks to all of you, CCA continues to operate from a position of financial strength. Your generosity spurs intellectual and spiritual growth in our children and propels them to accomplish our mission of Skills for Life and Faith for Eternity. I am looking forward to continuing this mission, and I am excited about the upcoming 2017-2018 academic school year and the opportunity of building lasting relationships with the families at Cornerstone Christian Academy.

Eric Nicholie Head of School

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Dear Friends, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept our sincere appreciation for the incredible support of Cornerstone Christian Academy during the 2016 – 2017 school year. Amid several challenges, including a slowed economy and a Head of School change, the Cornerstone Christian Academy family stepped up with another record setting year with 90% of families contributing to the Annual Fund - a 12% increase over last year! In the past year, your support has allowed us to improve the playground area substantially, add MacBook carts, and build a STEM Lab among many other things. Thank you once again for making Christian education a priority and partnering with

Darrell Roth

us to Build Skills for Life and Faith for Eternity in these young people. Because of your support, Cornerstone Christian Academy is stronger than ever. To develop even longer term financial stability, I’m pleased to announce the Cornerstone Christian Academy Endowment Fund. The endowment fund is designed to offer donors the ability to enable their expressed wishes to be carried out for future generations and offer an additional form of reliable income to the school in perpetuity. Another area of focus and improvement has been our Academic Program. In 2016, we assembled an Academic Committee with a focus on reviewing and improving the academic offering at Cornerstone Christian Academy to even better prepare our students for their next steps in life. A priority of the Board of Trustees was to perform a Head of School search to continue to build upon the great things going on at Cornerstone Christian Academy. After a comprehensive search, Mr. Eric Nicholie was selected to lead our school and began working over the summer on the transition. We couldn’t be happier with our selection and are confident he will take the school to an even higher level. Finally, as my tenure as Board President comes to an end, I’d like to thank you for the opportunity to have served the families of Cornerstone Christian Academy for so many years. I believe the organization is filled with health and vitality. I pray that because of our combined efforts over the years, the school is better resourced, better focused, and better aligned for momentum in the future.

Darrell Roth Board President

Accreditation for a private school is important because it demonstrates to the public that CCA is a trustworthy educational institution. Through regular assessment of our current faculty, curriculum, and school programs, the accreditation process shows that the CCA administration and faculty continually improve as we grow. AdvancEd accredits over 32,000 public and private

schools internationally and uses an Education Quality index score of 0 – 400. The average score is 282. CCA received an outstanding score of 318. This puts our school in the top .5 percentile globally among AdvancEd schools.

SPIRITUALITY Proverbs 20:11 – “Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, FACULTY FACULTY and whether it be right.” NIV. I am always amazed at what God does through our CCA student body! Their impact on our community and the world around them is amazing. Number of Magi Boxes (Christmas in a box) packed by 8th graders for children in Haiti and Honduras.

• 4th - 8th grade gave sacrificially so that 12 families in crisis could experience the love of Christ this Christmas season. • 3rd - 4th grade went on a Christmas Tour singing in local nursing homes and the Casa Home Tours • Middle School Life House Groups donated $200.00 to send gallon bags to Haiti. • Middle School traveled to Shreveport, LA; Austin and Medina, Texas to minister to the homeless and orphans in those cities. • Cougars In Action donated goody bags to the Atria Nursing Home residents. • CCA donated $195.00 to help with our annual Hanes for Haiti project led by former CCA teacher, Tammy McDonald. • CCA Teachers served at Lunches of Love and the Fort Bend Human Needs Pantry. Jude 22 – “And some having compassion making a difference.” KJV That is exactly what our students are doing! In a time when many young people are more concerned with their wants and needs than others, our students are setting a great example that Jesus must become more and we must become less. To top it all off, we had several students come to know Jesus as Savior! Wow, what an amazing year. Thank you for your support of what we do at Cornerstone Christian Academy. We could not impact lives without you!

STUDENT LIFE Athletics From football to track and beyond, Cornerstone offers a number of active outlets for students interested in athletics. Our coaches lead by example and play a powerful role in helping students develop their self-image and leadership skills, while instilling sound Christian principles. What’s more, our CCA coaching staff also promotes the values of teamwork and good sportsmanship both on and off the field, and strives to show the love of Christ in all that they do. Go Coogs!

STUDENT LIFE Fine Arts At Cornerstone Christian Academy, we value academic excellence, and we want our students to be well rounded in their school experiences as well. Our Fine Arts Department currently consists of Art, Music, and Drama programs. All of our elementary students participate in art and music throughout the school year. A variety of elective semester classes are also a part of our middle school schedules.

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS Playground Renovation Enhancements were made to our playground. Turf was installed on the playground in place of mulch. We removed stone benches, a few trees and bushes, and areas were leveled off so students could have more running space. This also improved the safety aspect of the playground.

“CCA is so blessed that God provided us with the donations to be able to upgrade our playground last year. The turf allows us to utilize the playground even in the rainy season and allows a much safer environment for our children. The padding under the turf is a much gentler fall as the children jump and play.” MRS. JESSUP, PK

CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS William O. Mandel STEM Lab Our goal is to establish and maintain high quality and effective STEM project-based learning centered on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for students in K – 8th grade with a focus on utilizing our new state-of-the art William O. Mandel STEM Lab and a STEM coordinator. The long-term impact is that the integration and application of science, technology, engineering, and math in a relatable context builds a strong foundation for student success in high school, college, and the work force.

“The William O. Mandel STEM lab is the ultimate tool to prepare students for the future. Instead of working out of a Sunday school classroom with 2 outlets and no sinks, students will have access to the necessary tools to help make them successful in high school and college lab environments.” ANDY PACE, Middle School Science Teacher
