Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh go léir agus go mbain sibh taitneamh as na ceiliúradh atá eagraithe sa chathair, agus go háirithe an Paraid mór agus h-eachtraí ag baint leis. As someone who lived overseas for three years and valued even more the importance of St Patrick’s Day as a migrant, it gives me great pleasure to invite you to join in Cork’s celebration of our national holiday. All of the St. Patrick’s Festival events planned for the city celebrate the rich and diverse fabric of life in Cork and reflect the great mix of nationalities that now call our city home. We welcome Corkonians and visitors alike Leeside.

The theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Stories of Cork’, provides a broad canvass for all local community groups and organisations to express their Irishness and what it means to them. It also provides an opportunity for visiting groups and bands to hear about why we are so proud of our city and country at a time when we begin a decade of story-telling to commemorate the War of Independence and the Civil War.

It is an honour and privilege for me to be Lord Mayor of Cork City, following in the footsteps of great historical figures like Tomás MacCurtain and Terence MacSwiney. Attending civic services at St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the North Cathedral, then reviewing the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as it winds its way through the city really underlines this honour for me as First Citizen, and are events that I am really looking forward to.
