copper media was formed in 2008 by Bridget Fitzpatrick and Jo Grady. We have a combined experience of twenty five years working within communications in education, as well as extensive experience within the private sector. We’ve worked across the board, providing communications for SMEs, charities and the public sector. We write, design, edit and project manage everything from marketing literature to media relations, and from recruitment campaigns and prospectuses to websites and online marketing.

We’re not a big company, and we think that’s one of our advantages. Our size and organisation means we can respond to our clients’ needs

quickly and work to tight deadlines. We are the people who win the work and do the work, so our clients benefit from a personal service throughout their project. We’ve worked with MMU on several projects including writing their careers service website and a brochure for graduate employers; marketing a graduate intern scheme which included media relations, copywriting (magazine feature writing and interviewing) and research; writing their environment website; and designing and writing their Carbon Management Plan.

CARBON MANAGEMENT PLAN

MMU produced a lengthy Carbon Management Plan (CMP) to set out the actions it will take to reduce C02 emissions by 50% in 2020.

What we did - design, writing and editing We were asked to design and write an accessible version of the CMP which would be used to highlight the University’s targets and actions. We wrote a sharp, edited version of the full document, and designed a clean and fresh publication, within MMU’s branding guidelines. MANCHESTER METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY ENVIRONMENT WEBSITE

Our previous work with MMU meant that we were recommended to the environment team to look at the structure and copy of its website. What we did We met with the Head of Environment Sustainability and his team to talk about the proposed new structure, and the tone and style of copy, and worked closely with the team for the duration of the project. We then wrote and edited the website which went was launched in March 2011. www.mmu.ac.uk/environment

CAREERS WEBSITE

What we did - writing and editing We were asked to rewrite the University’s careers website to coincide with launch of a new marketing initiative, Talent@, aimed at encouraging more students, graduates, staff and employers to use the careers service. We worked closely with the University’s marketing department to determine the style and tone of copy and the overall structure of the site. We also wrote copy for a microsite, specifically to promote Talent@. What MMU said “It was a pleasure to work with copper media. We agreed on the objectives of the project and they delivered on time with excellent results. ROYAL NORTHERN COLLEGE OF MUSIC UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2011/2012 GRADUATE SCHOOL BROCHURE 2011/12

The Royal Northern College of Music is one of the UK’s leading conservatoires.

What we did - design, writing and design We worked closely with RNCM’s marketing department to determine the look and feel of the undergraduate prospectus, and provided several initial design concepts based on a brief from the College. We also worked jointly on the structure of the publication, and commissioned a great photographer. We developed the preferred design concept and identified a new colour palette for the College to use in this and future material. We also wrote a piece in both prospectuses aimed at marketing Manchester – ‘Manchester: A city with a passion for music’.

What RNCM said “We were very satisfied with the work copper media did for RNCM. They were great partners to work with, allowing an exchange of ideas and great at interpreting our brief, and bringing their own knowledge and ideas to the project. “We would use them again as they understand the higher education sector and have particular insight into the student experience.” Liz Grindrod, Head of Marketing, RNCM

JUNIOR PROSPECTUS 2011

We were asked to work with RNCM again, this time on their Junior Prospectus. We worked on the design of the brochure, as well as providing much of the copy.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER We’ve worked with many different departments of The University of Manchester including Student Recruitment and Widening participation, Communications, Marketing and Public Relations and Development and Alumni Relations. We’ve written, edited and designed publications for the University. What we did - recent projects, design and layout The University wanted to publicise its National Science and Engineering week to local schools so we came up with a poster design. The widening participation department wanted an interactive design for some workshops it runs for Year 10 pupils in the region. We designed and produced a questionnaire based on a teenager’s notice board.

CROMA Independent pizza restaurant Croma was launched in Manchester in 2000. It promptly won the City Life Newcomer Award, and has gone on to build a reputation as one of the city’s favourite restaurants. Croma's lively and welcoming restaurants in Manchester, Chorlton and Prestwich serve traditional and innovative Italian pizzas.

What we did - website development and writing, menu and publicity design We met with the Board of Directors at Croma and discussed the look and feel of the website, and worked out how Croma wanted to present itself via the web. We also introduced Croma to Fat Heads Creative Studio- a team of web designers- who were able to translate their ideas into a new website. We worked on the copy for the website, making it friendlier and more engaging, and managed the relationship between Croma and Fat Heads.

We also re-designed and produced Croma’s main menu, dessert menu and specials publicity materials.

CHORLTON PARK PRIMARY SCHOOL We worked with the staff, pupils and governors of the largest primary school in Manchester to develop a new brand within a limited budget.

What we did - project management, research, branding, design, writing and production The design of the school logo drew on what the children and adults liked about their old one and developed a fresh, lively new logo that reflects the diversity and vibrancy of the school. We also came up with typefaces and a range of colours for the school to use themselves with the stationery templates we devised for them.

We wrote, designed and project managed a new welcome guide and prospectus for the school, alongside banners and posters to ‘launch’ the brand. An important part of the Chorlton Park brand is the powerful photography, provided by our close collaborator, Paul Cliff.

HAGLEY SIXTH FORM PROSPECTUS The sixth form of Hagley Catholic High School in Worcestershire teaches 200 students in 25 subjects. Its results are consistently high and students progress on to top universities. What we did - design and production We worked with the sixth form when it needed a new design for its prospectus. We introduced a clean and crisp style, alongside a new colour palette, which was rolled out across its marketing material. We designed both the 2010 and 2011 publications as well as an exhibition stand to complement the prospectuses. What they said “The quality of work is extremely high. We'll certainly use you again. Mathematics

An incredibly useful and versatile A-level that will make you think What you study

The beauty of our modular A-level Mathematics is that it allows you to study three very different main areas of Mathematics. The largest of these studies is Pure Mathematics which is the basic tool kit to solve and interpret mathematical problems. It combines the algebra and trigonometry previously studied and takes the topics far beyond GCSE. In addition you will discover new topics such as Calculus which enable us to find gradients of curved lines. The second area of study is Statistics and Probability. Here you will analyse and interpret information and data. You will model real life situations such as passing your driving test and winning the lottery to different probability models. The third module within the A-level is Mechanics where you will use mathematical models to demonstrate and interpret the real world of dynamics and forces.

How you study

Within year 12 you will be taught by two teachers who will cover different sections of the course. The pace will be fast therefore you will have to spend an equivalent amount of time doing questions at home, as you do in lessons, to reinforce your understanding. To study Mathematics at A-level you must have a love of the subject and enjoy doing the practice. Throughout year 12 you will sit three written exam papers two Pure Maths exams one in January and one in June and then a Statistics paper also in the summer. With this current modular system there is no coursework element. Traditionally the Sixth Form Mathematicians help out as responsible ambassadors on the year 7 Drayton Manor Trip. Small teams of lower school students are helped and encouraged by Sixth Formers to complete an outdoor mathematics trail within the theme park.

Department strengths and resources

Every member of the department is very supportive of the A-level and will always help and advise you. In addition to your lessons we run a voluntary after school work shop each week where homework can be done and help sought. Near your examinations a highly valued set of mark schemes and model answers for past exam papers are supplied. We regularly have a small number of students taking the further Mathematics AS and A-level. This allows us some flexibility in giving the opportunity to take a Decision Maths Module. This is a different type of Mathematics which can be useful with computing.

Progression to university

Maths is said to be the most powerful and marketable subject anyone can study in the world today. It relates with Economics, Engineering, Computer studies and the Sciences..

Our successes

90% to 100% pass rate for the last 10 years. Students from the past who have gone on to study Mathematics at University are Kelly Tucker (Wolverhampton), James Russell (Essex) and Jessica Deery (Manchester.)

CHILD’S EYE MEDIA Child’s Eye Media specialises in making innovative and highly engaging documentaries for young children. Their educational DVDs for children, teachers and parents including preschool and primary teaching resources have won many awards.

What we did - design and production We’ve worked with Child’s Eye regularly over the last three years. We designed the packaging for its DVD Box set of ‘Young Writer’s Role Play’ pack, as well the packaging for its role play outfit collection and publicity material to promote the series. What we did - design and writing of customer email marketing We overhauled the design and copy tone of its monthly customer newsletters, and continue to do so. We’re also working on the design of new customer loyalty material.
