patrolman, walking a beat on weekends and days off. In 1972, he moved to Arizona and went to work at ASARCO, in the old Roasters and Andoes, moving up to furnace man, and retiring in 2000. On days, in between shifts, he would run a garbage route in Dudleyville, was a volunteer fireman and Fire Chief and volunteered with Search and Rescue. He was a member of the LDS church and the United Steel Workers Local 886 in which he was a shop steward for many years. He loved playing Santa Claus for school, church, fire department and everyone who needed him; loved John Wayne and all his movies; would read all of Louis L’amour’s books; played with Rockie (the dog) and always fed him, and let him out. Harold lived by himself until two years ago when he found out he had lung cancer and had one lung removed; then, his ex-sister-in-law and husband, Ron and Evelyn Scheible, took care of him until he died at home. Harold wanted everyone to remember him as a friend.

Letter to the Editor: Dudleyville Fire District responds Editor, Copper Basin News: Let’s set the record straight. First of all, the Dudleyville Volunteer Fire Department is made up of dedicated men and women from the community it serves. They all work full-time jobs and are ready to respond to fires, or assist in medical calls, whenever they are available; they are not full-time fire fighters. Many times, they risk their lives and, in return, receive a very small stipend for their service. The Board of Directors consists of local individuals who have
submitted a petition to be on the ballot for the community to elect and vote for. The D.V.F.D. holds monthly meetings on the fourth Tuesday of every month, which are open to the public. A current financial report is presented to those in attendance and a copy can be provided upon request. There is nothing to hide. In accordance with Arizona Revised Statues 48-251, it requires that we submit an annual financial report to Pinal County’s Clerk of the Board, every year. Failure to comply may result in a
penalty of $100 per day, if not submitted by their deadline. It is also required that, at least every two years, we have our financial records audited by a certified public accountant or an outside trained auditor, approved by Pinal County’s Board of Supervisors. These records are also available to the public upon request. As far as trying to put farmers out of business, this is absurd. The D.V. F. D. follows Pinal County and Arizona State fire regulations. Open burning is allowed with a valid permit,
issued by Pinal County Air Quality. During the months of May through September, when weather conditions are extremely dry, the State issues a fire ban, which each fire district must enforce. It is then, when a fire ban is in place, that everyone must abide by it, including farmers. We do not have the resources to respond to fires that get out of control, especially in extremely dry or windy conditions. When a call is received by the D.V.F.D., the dispatcher must notify the firefighters of the fire and they must respond.

had nothing to do with Mr. Stambaugh being cited. It is up to the deputy to issue the citation and the court to decide the outcome. The D.V. F. The County Sheriff’s Department is usually notified and responds to the scene in which they will determine whether or not to cite the individual(s). The fire department’s only concern, when responding, is to make sure the fire is controlled and/or extinguished and all involved parties are safe; not to issue citations! beginnings in this new state. ASARCO celebrates 100 years in Hayden this year and invites you to attend their celebration of Arizona’s and their 100th at the Hayden Golf Course, Saturday, February 25. Prospectors began taking ore out of the hills that border Mineral Creek. Silver was being mined by prospectors in 1873 and by 1880 the Mineral Creek Mining Company was milling high grade copper ore and processed it at a 30 ton copper furnace; remains of which can be seen near what was the bustling town of Kelvin. After buying out three other companies in the area, Ray Consolidated expanded its operations and built a mill in Hayden. Today the Mill/Concentrator looks much the same on the outside as it looked in December 1910. The interior has changed, been rebuilt and modified numerous times over the past 101 years. According to old timers, Vanner
machines were used in the concentration of copper ore with the machines installed so close together that employees had to walk through the area sideways. That area today is used for flotation cells. The mill of 1910 to approximately 1969 was adjacent to the Garms Park and swimming pool in Hayden. The foundation is still there but the mill and its expansions have moved to another area of the concentrator. In a chance discussion the other day, it was interesting to hear Pete Acton say “my Grandfather, Tommy Thompson, helped build the concentrator in 1910. After construction was complete he worked as a mill operator for 10-12 years. He later opened his own dairy outside of Winkelman, known at the Thompson Dairy.” Pete’s mother, Hope Thompson Acton Barnett, filled in the other details which will follow in part four. When all the construction
was going on with Ray Con (later Kennecott), ASARCO (AS&R) was also getting their start but did not take over the ownership of the Concentrator until 1986. On a daily basis we hear ore cars running from Ray Mines to the crusher in Hayden. For those who have never toured the complete process from the mine to smelter it is probably hard to visualize the process. In 1964 a group of Hayden High FHA girls toured the complete operation which helps in the following description from an observer’s point of view, also using a publication entitled “Copper Mining in Ray and Hayden.” When the ore arrives at the crusher it is unloaded from the ore cars which have a bottom dump design and can unload ore in a matter of minutes. Conveyor belts take the ore 50 feet under the highway, up an incline of 535 feet to a point high in the crusher plant. The ore is crushed and sifted in a recirculating manner until
the ore can be sifted through ½-inch screens. The small particles are then sent to the mill via a conveyor which can be seen from the road to the smelter. The wet grinding cycle begins when the ore is fed into the six grinding sections. Each section has a rod mill, a leaching circuit in which acid dissolves the oxides, two ball mills and cyclones that separate the slimes from sand. There have been other additions in later years. Ore goes through several grinding and milling processes before going through a leaching process and sent to the smelter. When looking at the chemical formulas used in the process it is reminiscent of high school chemistry lab experiments except on the tremendously larger scale. Over the past 100 years employees at the concentrator have offered suggestions on how to make their job easier, some without a high school See Asarco, Page 9

Are you ready for a healthier life? Weight loss not only improves your quality of life, but also prevents or lowers your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, back and joint pain. You’ve probably tried to lose weight before, but gained it back. Studies have shown that patients on traditional weight loss programs lose weight, but often regain two-thirds of it within one year and almost all of it within five years. The LAP-BAND® System is an adjustable band that is placed around the top of your stomach laparoscopically (using a video camera and small incisions), reducing the stomach capacity and creating an earlier feeling of fullness. It is an effective and reversible surgical method for weight loss. It’s safer and less invasive than gastric bypass, as there is no stomach cutting or stapling. Dr. Werner Andrade is now offering this procedure at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center.

the installation of the Ore Cart along the ‘Copper Corridor’ should happen later this year. The Town and the Copper Corridor Economic Development Council (CCEDC) has been working with ADOT for approval to place Ore Cart along Highway 77 near the Winkelman Wall. Artist Nancy Dunst of Sedona completed the artwork almost three years ago. Asarco-Copper Basin Railway donated the railroad tracks. Funding for the project was earmarked for the CCEDC through then Congressman Rick Renzi’s office. The project in Winkelman is a collaboration between the town and the CCEDC. In other business, the council approved a request to provide demolition services for a property at 317 West Third Street. Property owner Chris J. Streeter will pay for the services before demolition is begun. There was a general discussion of public safety issues related to a possible future agenda
items concerning traffic flow in the area of Fifth and Giffen near the grade school, and traffic concerns about local streets that need ‘Dead

Pastor’s Corner By Steve Yurek Pastor, Kearny SBC By now most of you have recovered from your team not winning in the Super Bowl. I find it strange that major companies would spend millions of dollars in advertising for just 30 seconds of time. Imagine if these same companies would spend that same amount on, let’s say – feeding the poor, helping the homeless or even getting wells for water in countries where people are dying because of the lack of something as simple as – clean water. Over $200 MILLION dollars was made by
Continued from Page 6 chemistry education. But experience on the job counts and their ideas have improved operation over the years. One comment from one of the students that stuck with me as we toured the concentrator in 1964 was “Now I know what my Dad does, this place smells just like my Dad when he comes home from work.” In 1910 many of the workers lived in tents, Highway 177 did not exist only the dirt road from Ray to Hayden, remnants of which still exist and can be seen winding back and forth across Highway 177. Southern Pacific Railway carried passengers from Phoenix and Florence to the Hayden depot at the area across from Velasco Avenue. El Canyon separating Smelterside and Hayden was inhabited by families. There were walking bridges, catwalk and later a bridge for cars all of which have been demolished for expansion. Winkelman residents who worked in Hayden usually walked the path that is still visible from the back side of the Hayden High gym and Lobo Lane. Happy 101st anniversary to the Concentrator and all those who have been involved in the construction and production over these past 101 years.
Fox in advertising this past Super Bowl with over 45-minutes of commercials. Am I the only one that thinks this is a little excessive! Do I have a great desire to go out and buy Doritos? Get a new Lexus? Pick-up a new Chevy truck? Buy a new pair of Skecher shoes that a fat dog could wear? No – I don’t think so! Over $200 MILLION DOLLARS spent on something that has been seen once and
is now over. Hmmmm makes me wonder what I would do with $200 MILLION DOLLARS… So…last week I talked about the buzz about town with a number of local churches getting together for Peter Whitebird on the 12th, 13th and 14th. By now posters should be up around town for more information. This is a CITY-WIDE event! Not only is he a great musician, he has
guaranteed he WILL NOT do Bubba this year! Don’t forget to bring your sweetheart to the Valentine’s Banquet on the 14th at Fellowship Baptist Church at 6 p.m. For just $5 each, enjoy your choice of Grilled Chicken or Grilled Steak, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, fresh tossed salad and tea or water. Enjoy a night of music by Peter Whitebird and a great See Pastor, Page 13

In January of 2011, the Mammoth office temporarily closed due to constraints on resources as well as usage patterns. Clerk of the Superior Court, Chad A. Roche remained committed to reopening the office as soon as resources would permit. “We took the time to analyze the situation from all perspectives,” said Roche, “and conditions are now favorable to reopening Mammoth.” After just one year in office, Clerk Roche has prioritized resources while closing fiscal year 2010/2011 a full six percent under budget. By utilizing prudent fiscal practices, Roche and his management team have trimmed wasteful policies and procedures, permitting reallocation of funds to provide expanded services for the public. That year he burst onto the national radio scene with a string of smash hit radio singles and quickly established himself as one of America’s top Christian Country singersongwriters. This is Peter’s last tour. He, with his wife Judy, is looking at becoming a pastor of a church. The couple has traveled thousands of miles since 1999 ministering to groups as small as eight and as large as 5,000.
