Leaving garage doors open, hiding keys outside to the residence, leaving gates unlocked, lack of security devices, and unsecure windows are just invitations to criminals who count on these poor habits to victimize the resident.

copper basin news, HayDen, arizona Supply proper lighting to darkened areas of your property criminals do not like exposure. Having proper and strategically placed lighting will not only illuminate dark hiding spots but allow you to survey your property surroundings safely. Report any and all suspicious activity a vast majority of criminal acts including serious crimes go unreported due to either complacency or lack of education as to what

is potentially going on. Rather than investigating the suspicious behavior yourself, call 911. Get involved in your neighborhood there are many programs that you and your family can get involved with as well as getting to know your neighbors. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office provides many volunteer services and programs that can assist in starting a Block Watch, Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods (GAIN),

Post Office needs your input to provide best quality service Hayden-Winkelman—The U.S. Postal Service has established a review process for certain Post Offices known as the POST Plan. The Post Office was among the offices evaluated under the POST Plan criteria. The Postal Service is now soliciting community input through the enclosed survey to help determine the best course of action for providing postal services to the community. After receiving the results of this survey, the Postal Service will examine the responses. Unless more than 60 percent of the community supports concluding a discontinuance study for the Post Office and establishing one of

the additional sources of services described below, the Postal Service intends to maintain the Post Office with four hours of window service each weekday. Current Saturday window service hours and access for delivery receptacles will not change as a result of the POST Plan realignment of weekday window service hours. In addition to this survey, the Postal Service will hold a meeting at HaydenWinkelman District Auditorium at 824 Thorne Ave, Winkelman on Jan.16 at 6 pm, to answer questions and provide additional information about POST Plan. At the meeting, local

management will share the results of the survey, answer questions, and solicit input regarding the time of day the Post Office will be open. Although survey results will be known and shared, the Postal Service will not make a final decision regarding this office until after the public meeting. This will enable the Postal Service to obtain all community input and opinions, from both the surveys and the meeting, before making a final decision. The Postal Service is also seeking locally established businesses or organizations to serve as contractoroperated postal retail units in communities like yours. If you are interested in operating a postal retail unit, please visit the website at http://about.usps.com/ news/electronic-presskits/expandedaccess/ welcome.htm for additional information. Generally, these contractor-operated postal retail units will operate in combination with a community’s Post Office. However, selection of the third option in the attached survey indicates a preference of your Post Office to be studied for discontinuance with the establishment of a contractor-operated unit as a replacement for the Post Office. Please return the enclosed survey in the postage-paid envelope provided by Jan. 2, 2013. We kindly request the inclusion of your mailing address so that we can assure that one survey response is submitted per address. Please note that your response may be entered into a publicly accessible record.

Town of Kearny hires new town manager By Mila Besich-Lira In their monthly meeting in Dec., the Kearny Town Council voted unanimously to hire Gene Green to become the new Town Manager for Kearny. The announcement came after a lengthy search for a new manager. The town was aided by the Arizona League of Cities and Towns in their search. Green will assume his duties on Jan. 2. Until his arrival, Margaret Gaston will continue as Interim Town Manager. Green comes to Kearny with extensive qualifications and high recommendations. He has earned a B.A. in Organizational Administration through Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage, Alaska. He then went on to earn an M.Ed. in Human Resources Education from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. He began his municipal career in 1977 in Anchorage, Alaska, in the Field Service and Maintenance Divisions of the city. He progressed through several offices, including work with road programs, utility supervision, billing systems, strategic planning and budgeting. In 1992, Green became Manager of the Employer Services Division , with 280 employees. He left that position in 1995, to become the Assistant City Manager and Administration Director of Unalaska, a city of 4,000 – plus. The work included strategic planning, operation and capital budgeting, and grant planning and administration. In 1998, Green took the

position of City Manager for the City of Mohalla, Oregon. He administered a $17 million budget and the development of capital projects, including a new library, water and wastewater improvements, major road improvements, and recreational trails and parks.

During his tenure, the City of Molalla was the recipient of $12 million in grants. The City of West Linn, Oregon, hired him in 2006 to manage its Public Works Department, including the Engineering Division, Water Division, and Environmental

Services and Street Maintenance Divisions. He served there until West Linn underwent structural reorganization last March. Green has worked with populations large and small. He has also been

active in community work and enjoys a stiff physical development regimen, including running and walking. He describes himself as an outdoorsman. By mutual decision,

Hayden dog catcher still not formally approved By Mila Besich-Lira The Town of Hayden Mayor and Council went into executive session last week discuss the possible termination or resignation of the Police Chief Scott Gillen. After the executive session, the council said it would do an employee evaluation of Gillen at their Jan. meeting. The council also heard a presentation from the League of Arizona Cities and Towns regarding town council procedures and how the council/manager form of government is required to operate. Following the presentation, the council also discussed the hiring of Kathryn Quinn as the new Hayden Animal Control officers. Quinn was hired by the Town Manager Bill Leister. Quinn has already received training and has started her position with the town but the council did not offer final approval on the hiring. Residents in the area have been filing complaints of dogs running loose. The council also approved the purchase of gift cards for the town employees for the holidays. In Jan., the council will also be considering enacting a new town vehicle process.
