LEGENDARY DANISH DESIGN SINCE 1939

Arne Jacobsens signature

ARNE JACOBSEN

1902-1971

AN ICON OF HIS TIME Arne Jacobsen grew up in a middle-class home that was decorated in the flamboyant Victorian style popular at the time, yet the internationally renowned architect chose to work with the exact opposite; the simple, stylish and functional. Arne Jacobsen achieved stardom in the field of international design, and was with his timeless and groundbreaking lines, an icon of his time. 45 years after his death, he is still a great role model for today’s architects and designers, and there is a constant demand for his work all over the world. Being the champion of details, Arne Jacobsen mastered total design and drew the lines for large and complex construction projects, the complete interior, the furniture and the clocks that decorated the building as the perfect finishing touch. The world-famous designs by Arne Jacobsen are now available to everyone. You can see the results in this brochure.

The Bankers Clock hangs on the wall in the lobby, which runs like a cathedral almost 20 meters up through the six floors. The Danish National Bank is considered one of Arne Jacobsen’s masterpieces.

9

BANKERS WATCH Like everything else Arne Jacobsen created, the Bankers clock is simple and elegant. But it is also created with great imagination and symbolism. All the hour numbers have been replaced with a spiral, consisting of 12 units each of which indicates a time of day. Hence the nickname, the Spiral watch. On the Arne Jacobsen wristwatch the concave dial is not an external part, which is mounted in the clock in the assembly. It is part of the case itself. Unconventionally, the dial has been painted several times directly on the watch case. The wall clock dial consists of up to seven layers of paint.

CITY HALL 1956 Rødovre City Hall

17

CITY HALL. Designed in 1956. Rødovre City Hall is one of Arne Jacobsen’s most impeccable buildings clearly inspired by international trends. Arne Jacobsen designed all the details himself, including the clock and decorated the building with his own furniture designs. Jacobsen’s uncompromising approach to design and architecture is expressed in the City Hall clock. With the convex glass and the simple display of hours of the day it is a study in simplicity and elegance.

ROMAN 1942 Aarhus Town Hall

23

ROMAN. Designed in 1942. Aarhus Town Hall is an excellent example of modern Scandinavian architecture, that Arne Jacobsen was known for. Along with Erik Moller he designed the town hall in a tight functionalist design. However, people demanded a tower and the two architects therefore had to add a 60 meter tall tower. For this prominent tower Jacobsen designs the Roman clock, with its Roman numerals forming a perfect landmark for the city.

STATION 1939

For manufacturer Lauritz Knudsen

27

STATION. Designed in 1939. In the mid-1930s a young Arne Jacobsen designed a villa for HJ Hansen, director of Lauritz Knudsen. Hansen saw potential in the young architect and asked him to draw a clock. The clock was presented at the Spring Exhibition Charlottenborg in 1939 and was Jacobsen’s first industrial product design. Already at this point simplicity and clean design was a trademark for Jacobsen.

ARNE JACOBSEN

Tableclock with alarm

49

LK. Designed in 1939. The fact that Arne Jacobsen would draw a clock was not in the cards. Jacobsen had designed a house for HJ Hansen, who was director of Lauritz Knudsen. Hansen was so excited about Jacobsen, that he encouraged him to draw a clock back in 1939. It was the first of five clock series from Arne Jacobsen.
