Our social activities also encompass participation in several sporting events that currently include golf; skiing; go karting and rowing.

Becoming a member of our Company opens the door to many experiences and opportunities that are different from other mainstream clubs and organisations and can help enrich a member’s life and career.

For those interested, there is the opportunity to reach a senior status within the Company; to become involved in the civic life of the City of London; and to assist in supporting the Mayoralty and the Corporation in all its spheres of activity.

Membership of a smaller livery company such as our own provides a strong sense of purpose and belonging that helps nurture many friendships and connections.

In modern times it has evolved into a social and charitable enterprise that retains an identity focused on the ancient craft of cask making.

he last issue of The Cooper marked the start of my term as Master Cooper and since then it has been a very busy time not only for me but for the Company too. From numerous Court meetings, the Lord Mayor's Parade (see page 17), our annual trip to Southend with guests from Coopers' Court (see overleaf), as well as the many events in place to commemorate the significant moments throughout the year in London and elsewhere. Some I have participated as a representative of the Company but many I have done with the enthusiastic support of our members.

We welcome members to enjoy a fellowship around our shared values and an interest in the history, culture and charitable endeavours that our company has pursued for the last 500 or so years.

The Company is only as good as its members, their support and enthusiasm is a vital part of the spirit of the Company which I hope is conveyed in the pages that follow.

The Worshipful Company of Coopers is one of the oldest Livery Companies in London.

are commercial ones. Some of the bigger wineries have contract growers on different sites and many of the smaller vineyard owners get a nearby winery to make, bottle and label their wines for them.

There are 147 wineries in operation.

Liveryman Diana shares her passion for the coopering craft and its presence in the world of wine. According to Wine GB, 75% of the wine 2018 has been a good year for English wine.

Camel Valley in Devon became the first English wine producer to receive a Royal Warrant; Wine GB became the national body representing English and Welsh wine; Hush Heath in Kent are doubling their size; Rathfinny launched their first sparkling wines from their 600 acre estate in East Sussex and 2018 promises to be an excellent vintage

The smell of polished leather and warm hay hits me as I walk into the Wood Street Police Station Stables and I'm eyed up cautiously by Sawyer a grey gelding (opposite, right) as lunch is being served. I wander through eagerly in search of one of our tallest candidates getting ready for his Freedom ceremony. Ajax is an 18-hands Shire horse who normally resides in Jersey with his owner, Liveryman Alan Roberts, and is patiently standing as the finishing touches are made to his appearance.

Alan's partner, Penny, is busy fixing the braid in his mane having already decorated him with a tail ring, flights, and ribbons, and all in the Coopers' traditional red and black colours. His saddle shines as he turns and the handmade shabraque (overleaf) that Penny has made for the ceremony finishes off what is an impressive turnout for this gentle giant.

I suddenly feel very small compared to my walking partners, but it is a feeling of excitement that takes over as we head out into the afternoon traffic that gives way to our procession so that we can progress comfortably towards London Wall.

Amusingly, it is not just me that is taken by the sight of our parade and that is exactly what today is about, a public procession celebrating a special event. As our mounted party makes its way past glass fronted buildings, those walking past pause to watch and wave and capture this moment on their mobile phones.

It isn't long before Alan and Ajax are out in the yard alongside the four police horses who are ready to It's not until we're heading down Bishopsgate that head out into the autumn sunshine and escort him I realise we are nearly there. As guests made their way into the Hall for refreshments, Penny took the reins and led Ajax back to Wood Street where he would stay overnight with his bunk buddies before returning to Jersey as a FreeHorse of the Company.

With the formalities over and Ajax now a Freehorse and Company mascot, those present were invited to have their photos taken with the horses and speak with their riders. The Assistant Clerk brings out platters of apples and carrots for the horses which the guests delight in feeding to them.

Whilst it is highly unusual and possibly unique to have an animal join a Company in this way, it was an opportunity not to be missed. Shire horses have been used to pull drays since the 18th Century and still today are used by breweries such as Hook Norton, Samuel Smith, Thwaites and Wadworth who also use coopered casks to store their beer.

However, the breed itself has become endangered, much like the craft of coopering, and the Company felt that tying the two together and highlighting the historical connection in a remarkable way would help garner interest from those who would otherwise lack an awareness of the Company that we would benefit from.

FOR AULD LANG SYNE HONORARY CURATOR DON LYONS

Liveryman Don Lyons shares with us further insight into one of the Company's treasured artefacts.

"I am a firm believer in the Company not just being about history."

The Curator’s role is essentially one of ‘caring for a collection’ and I am pleased to confirm that our storage conditions have been much improved since the closure of our Museum at the end of 2017.

The work of recording our artefacts, all kept under strict security, continues - I hope to illustrate some of our treasures in future editions of ‘The Cooper’.

During 2018, our Clerk, Assistant Clerk and members of the Hall and Heritage Committee, together with a small group of volunteers have all played a significant part in a progressive approach to the preservation and presentation of our Hall and artefacts. I thank them all.

It may seem odd to include ‘progressive’ and ’preservation’ in one sentence, but I am a firm believer in the Company not just being about history and I am grateful to our innovators, past and present, that keep the Coopers’ Company alive and an institution fit for the future.

One such innovator was Liveryman Leonard Sharpless who became our first Honorary Curator in 1974 and who proved a significant driving force in creating the fine displays that were developed by his five successors over a period of nearly forty years.

The cup is engraved with our demi heathcock crest and our past and present mottoes ‘ Gaude Maria Virgo’ and ‘Love as Brethren’.

Leonard presented the Company with the Curator’s Cup on 18th February, 1986. It seems an appropriate and seasonal gesture for a Curator to raise it for the sake of ‘Auld Lang Syne’, but I would like to think that we can all join in this Curator’s toast to: ‘The Coopers’ Company - present and future’

Pastmaster Keith Brown OBE introduces us to fellow Liveryman Tom McInally.

“Unfortunately the redevelopment plans had my family relocated to a peripheral estate in the south of Glasgow but we still continued to travel to Govan to church and meet friends until eventually all our friends were relocated to areas throughout the west of Scotland.

“I became lead officer in the Glasgow East End Regeneration. Through the Govan Weavers I also helped to establish the Govan School Piping Association in partnership with Strathclyde Police to provide piping and drumming lessons for all primary schools in central Govan.

How did you meet Rosemarie?

“I met Rosemarie in 1971 when having a drink after a session of 5 a sides and our meeting was entirely coincidental insofar as I had a bag of football kit and some drawing paper and equipment that I needed for some weekend work.

“To cut a long story short I ended up going to a dance hall with Rosemarie, walked her home, got home late and lost the first football game in two years. The next morning I met Rosemarie at lunchtime to take her to see Rangers at Ibrox and the rest is history.

Tom and Rosemarie have two daughters Jacquelyn who has just become engaged and Suzanne who lives in the United States.

The Trades House of Glasgow was created at the time of reform of Glasgow's local government in 1605. At that time the electorate was essentially divided into two groups: the Merchants and the Craftsmen.

The Craft Incorporations were led by the Deacon Convener who was given a council seat which is retained to this day, but no longer has speaking or voting rights.

Trades House was established to help protect and support the Crafts people of the City. Over the centuries it housed the Trades Free School for boys and girls, worked closely with educational establishments within the City to support initiatives when appropriate and used Funds built up following donations from generous benefactors to assist those in need.

Each of the 14 Incorporated Crafts including the The Incorporation of Coopers of Glasgow is an independent charity, giving assistance and funding to their chosen areas of interest.

How did you join The Coopers?

“On the back of the Sports Foundation Pat Kelly asked me to join the Glasgow Coopers and since Pat and I had been friends and him a client for many years, I agreed in 2006 having been to many dinners with Pat. Going through my lineage my father and two great grandfathers were Hammermen or sheet metal workers but I found my grandfather had been a Cooper in Edinburgh and that helped the decision.

THE LORD MAYOR'S PARADE 2018 The Lord Mayor’ Show Rum Ceremony mentioned in the Master's Banquet speech cannot be described without a little history of the 'tot' of rum.

Historically the Royal Navy stopped work daily to have a tot of rum at 11:15 in the morning and it was always preceded by adding water to the rum in closely monitored proportions by the Warrant Officer of the Day, to create what they called ‘grog’. Since grog was unpalatable, for this ceremony we are keeping to the full strength version. Traditionally any left over grog was to be thrown over the side of the ship, which was probably not a bad idea. That tradition ended in 1973.

The Rum Ceremony to welcome the Lord Mayor is somewhat younger than grog in the Royal Navy. It only originated in 1976 when Alderman Sir Robin Gillett was Lord Mayor. He was also a Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve and there was discussion at the time about how HMS President could mark the occasion. A table would be set up on the pavement with the rum tub (see picture) which had been presented by the Worshipful Company of Coopers in 1970 to HMS President, and the Captain and the Commander would greet the Lord Mayor. After appropriate salutations, the tot of rum would be presented to the Lord Mayor in a silver goblet by a member of the Women's Royal Naval Reserve.

The Coopers’ Company, makers of wooden casks to store rum and other commodities, became involved in the Lord Mayor’s Show in their Quincentenary year and continue to generously provide the rum today. In 2018, Master Cooper, Mr Anthony Behrens and his Clerk, Lt Col Adrian Carroll raise a glass of rum with Freeman and Commander Richmal Hardinge, Commanding Officer of HMS President to the Lord Mayor.

IT AIN'T HALF HOT MUM! GP CAPT DP MANNING MA CMGR FCMI RAF

Group Captain and Liveryman David Manning reports from the Gulf to give readers an update.

Having had a superb year of learning to be a strategic leader and understanding the Global geo-political system within the framework of prosperity, stability and security at the Royal College of Defence Studies, I found myself booted and spurred in the Gulf on 26th July (having had 2 ½ weeks’ notice to move). The job - Deputy UK Air Component Commander in Number 83 Expeditionary Air Group (EAG). I support the UK Air Component Commander (who is a 1*) in exploiting the air environment as part of the UK’s national and coalition interests across the region.

I am located at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar which is located roughly 20 miles from the capital city of Doha.

The Base is large, well founded and with all the amenities one would expect of a large and dynamic airfield excellent food, lots of leisure and sporting facilities.

It is home to thousands of military and civilian personnel predominately from the United States but also from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Germany and other nations that contribute to the Coalition. The downside, apart from being away from loved ones for 6 months, is the current high temperatures which are in the mid-40 degrees and associated high humidity and hot sandy dust which is being blown around by warm summer winds.

This sandy oasis is home to Number 83 Expeditionary Air Group (EAG) which is the Royal Air Force’s operational headquarters in the Middle East.

83 EAG is a diverse organisation consisting of five Expeditionary Air Wings (EAW) spread across 5 different countries. It contains roughly 1000 tri-service and civilian personnel who support a wide range of operations in the Broader Middle East (BME) and it is the quality of our people which has been readily evident since I arrived, serving away from their families, which make the real warfighting and winning difference. They are certainly our biggest asset and I am extremely proud to be able to lead and command them in my new role.

Using a range of state-of-the-art aircraft and equipment, we deliver a full spectrum of air power roles in support of Operation KIPION and SHADER: Attack, Air-to-Air Refuelling, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Air Mobility. Operation KIPION was created in 2011 as the UK’s primary deterrence and presence operation within the BME. The UK maintains a military presence in the BME as part of our national enduring commitment to peace and stability; and to deter malign 18 | The Cooper | Winter/ Spring 2019

intent in the region. To enable this, A400Ms and C-17s of Number 99 Squadron (The Coopers affiliated Squadron) provide invaluable strategic and tactical airlift, transporting vital supplies and personnel around the region.

One of the most high profile operations that 83 EAG supports is Op SHADER which is the UK’s contribution to degrade and defeat Daesh (ISIS) through military action.

This links with the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve.

While Daesh has lost more than 98% of territory they once held, they still pose a threat to national and international security. Defeating this ruthless organisation in Syria and Iraq is critical to our national security and to protect UK citizens at home and abroad. 83 EAG provides a significant amount of air power to defeat Daesh and has conducted over 1700 air strikes in Syria and Iraq to date.

A significant number of personnel from across the Group support eight Tornado GR4s, six Typhoon FGR4s and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems in striking Daesh targets using precision weapons such as Paveway IVs and Brimstone. These strikes are supported by enhanced ISR assets such as the Sentinel R1 aircraft which provide decisive situational awareness to minimise the risk to civilian life; in addition to our rigorous targeting process and the professionalism of the Royal Air Force crews.

Tactical air mobility is provided by C-130J aircraft while the Voyager also provides important Air-to-Air Refuelling capabilities for Royal Air Force and Coalition aircraft.

The UK is part of an international Coalition of 77 members (72 member States and 5 institutions) including Iraq, Arab nations, European partners and the UK. This Global Coalition has a single aim, to defeat Daesh. And the UK is playing a leading role in that Global Coalition. The creation, development and sustainment of relationships are hugely important in an age of complex threats and instability.

It became quickly quite apparent to me just how important these relationships are in sharing capabilities, adding ‘Love as Brethren’ and ‘Quisque Tenax’ political legitimacy and generating forces to share the burden of providing security across the region. Indeed, Manners much of my work is continual Coalition engagement and relationship management. However, relationships and engagements with our host nations are equally important.

Following the Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2015, the UK committed the Country to increasing support to the Gulf region. We stand with the Gulf nations against mutual threats to improve their security, strengthen regional stability and create mutual prosperity. And all personnel across 83 EAG engage and liaise regularly with our host nations.

Serving on operations during the Royal Air Force’s 100th year is especially relevant as the Force was born out of conflict. Having now served for 30 years, I am especially proud to be a member of an exciting and diverse operational organisation working with high quality personnel who continue to deliver day in, day out in a variety of roles; all supporting operations. And the complexity of the battle space, the challenges of operating in this environment and the intellectual and leadership opportunities offered will ensure I am a wiser and more experienced commander at the end of this Tour.

So while I will have missed, what I am sure was a superb Annual Banquet, I will have served my country side-byside with talented and focussed Brits and Coalition forces
