Poetry award win for local student Maggie Shannon, a Year 10 student at Coonabarabran High School, recently took out first prize in her category for a national poetry competition honouring the legendary Dorothea Mackellar. by ELEANOR RAPLEY The ‘Dorothea Mackellar Poetr y Awards’ inspire students f rom Kinde rga r ten to Year 12 to express their thoughts through poetry, and this year attracted over 7,000 entries from across the country. Although Maggie has written poetry previously, entering a competition of this size was a first, but

she was motivated to enter after approaching a stand advertising the competition at a careers’ expo in Gunnedah. “I’ve always wanted to write poetry, and when I saw the opportunity, I started writing more,” Maggie said. Her inspiration derives from her environment, dreams, or seeing things in other’s perspectives. A talented creative w r i te r, M a g g i e i s

no st range r to bei ng acknowledged for her words, and was recently announced as a winner of wat tle magaz ine’s inaugu ral Creative Youth Competition for her entry ‘Observations’, published in wattle 3.0. For her recent poem, ‘Static Paroxysm’ that succes s fu l l y took out the Kur r umbeded Award Secondary, she ch o s e to by p a s s t h e optional prompt (‘listen

I have an idea’), and rather went down her own route to weave a complex combination of metaphor and similes to evoke an emotive sense of nostalgia. She explains the poem as a story of wanting to re-meet with a person, and reminisce memories with them, and be in their company. The awards’ ceremony took place last Friday, which Maggie was able

to attend, descr ibing it as an “amazing experience”, with other winners attending via livestream. All winners took home a trophy from local artist Anne Knight in the form of a framed print, as well as $250 cash prize, and a $100 Dymocks gift card. Maggie is now looking forward to developing h e r s k i l l a s a p o et, and enter ing more competitions.

Static Paroxysm Meet me within the tumbleweeds Follow the talons that carry hues of summer That land in the silent trees Where we shall relive our souls burning in a ravenous fire Till then I must ponder about your luminous smile, Which swirl the dull moth wings with light and colour, Oh, how they endear to flutter, The autumn wind we both adore carries sighs of longing I’ll reminisce our memories in echoes of hope How a thought of you lingers in my mind And taints my ghost lips in a tattooed smirk. - Maggie Shannon

Binnaway Bombshells fund-raise for Lincon Goard’s recovery It’s been almost two months since Lincon Goard’s devastating football injury and during that time, efforts to help the Goard family have been ongoing throughout the community – including the long-awaited ‘Binnaway Bombshells Barefoot Bowls’ fund-raiser at the Binnaway Bowling Club, which successfully raised over $10,000. by ELEANOR RAPLEY Held on S at u rd ay, 7 S e p t e m b e r, e v e nt or g a n i s er, Mel i s s a Meyers said the turn out was strong, with 5 6 players i nclud i ng Bombshells team mates, committee members and supporters creating a uplifting atmosphere on the day. “ There was a lot of out side c om mu n it y s upp o r t , wh i c h wa s great to see, and we even had a guest of honour for a couple of hours in Lincon himself,” Mrs Meyers said. “As a Club, we do what we can to look after our players. “This was our thing to make sure Lincon and

his family know we are here to support them.” Across the day, fundraising efforts included a barbecue, ales, a raffle, and auction items, with raffle sellers being kept on their feet. “The idea of a bowls’ tournament was a bit of fun for the end of the season, where everyone could get involved, plus it supported our major Bombshells’ sponsor,” Mrs Meyers said. “ E ver yone enjoyed themselves while suppor ting a good cause.” Mrs Meyers said the event r a n smo ot h ly, despite having so many things running at once, with people jumping in to help wherever they

cou ld , w ithout bei ng asked. A l l f u nd s w i l l b e directed to the Goard family to assist Lincon with his rehabilitation and travel costs, and support him until he is able to return to work. “ We a r e hopi n g it w i l l help ease the financial burden they have endured over the past couple of months while Lincon and both his parents were unable to work while he was in Sydney. “ We c a n’t t h a n k everyone enough that donated, helped organise, contributed to the day, bought tickets, got i nvolved play i ng bowls – and just showed up to support.

“It was an amazing effort for a small town.” Although the Goard family was unable to make an appearance, Nicole Goard passed on a message of thanks to Mrs Meyers, which was read on the day. M rs Goard said L i nc on c ont i nued t o improve each day and continued to work hard to regain his movement and muscle strength. “Lincon loved training a nd pl ay i n g for t he Binnaway Bombshells, and often commented on how supportive the committee and training was. “He has now retired his football boots, but he is keen on helping in any capacity he can

nex t yea r u nder the Bombshells.” Mrs Goard stressed her and her fami ly ’s g ratitude for the community support. “ O n b eh a l f of ou r whole family, thank you everyone. “These words really do not express how grateful our family is for all that is happening here in Binnaway to help Lincon with his recovery. “Thank you to all who have donated raff les, the Binnaway Bowling C lub, the wonder f u l people behind the scenes making this all happen and for the generosity of you all.” “Mark, Anna, myself and Lincon are blown away by your support.”

Edwards takes the reins as new Jockey Club president At its August annual general meeting, the Coonabarabran Jockey Club welcomed Brad Edwards as its new president, marking the beginning of a new era filled with exciting changes. by ELEANOR RAPLEY M r E dwa r d s described himself as a long-time thoroughbred racing enthusiast. Five years ago, after being approached by Sarah Baglee to join the Jockey Club committee, he decided to step up and get involved – and said he hasn’t looked back since. When outgoing president Adam Freeman stepped down due to work commitments, Mr Edwards acknowledged that finding someone to take on an executive role in the committee would be a challenge. “ I ’d b e e n v i c e president for a couple of years, so I thought I’d throw my hat in the ring for the president’s position, so we could ke ep t h i n g s mo v i n g a long smo oth ly a s a committee.” Mr Edwards said his role as president will i nv ol v e g u id i n g t he committee, providing a s si st a nc e wher ever

necessar y, manag ing relationships between the club, and addressing any concerns raised by strappers or trainers. The Coonabarabran Jockey Club committee cu r rently consists of a r ou nd 16 members , wh ich M r E dwa rds describes as an ener get ic t e a m w it h forward-thinking ideas for the future. “We had a very good president in Stewar t Rodgers, who really got the club going,” he said. “Since then, Adam’s done a fantastic job, so I’m hoping to continue that legacy, and build up t he c lu b a nd it s profile – hopefully, get a few more race meets in the process.” Ahead of the October races, the Coonabarabran B owling Club has stepped aside as the m aj or s p on s or a f t er about 12 years, but the Imperial Hotel has now jumped on board. “A d a m D r a b a r e k , owner of the Imperial

Hotel, has been a good sponsor and supporter for ma ny ye a r s , s o we’re looking forward to him coming on and playing a bigger role in the Jockey Club,” Mr Edwards said. “ T here was a lot of pressure on the committee after losing a major sponsor, because they’re a very hard thing to find, but we’re very glad the Imperial Hotel has come on board, and we appreciate it.” Mr Edwards said the Jockey Club committee was now cited to build a strong, working relationship with the Imperial Hotel that will hopefully extend into a long-term deal with Mr Drabarek and his team. F u r ther pla ns on the club’s agenda are upgrades to the jockey rooms at the racecourse t o ac c ommod at e a n influx of female jockeys, and overhaul the judges’ and race-caller tower. While these plans are still in their infancy, the v ision is to have

the projects completed within the next 12-18 months. O n how it fe els t o be elected to the pr e sident ’s p o sit ion , M r E dwa r d s s a id it was quite rewarding, k now i ng th at you’ve put your hand up for a job and the people at the AGM thought I was capable of handling the position. “ We a re excited t o continue collaborating with local businesses and community groups that have supported our race meets. “ We a r e de eply g rateful for their contributions and are pleased to offer them opportunities to raise funds. “Now, we’re looking forward to a big 2 0 2 4 I mper ia l Hot el Coonabarabran Cup on Sunday, 27 October! “Hopefully the weather holds out, the crowd comes, the beers are cold and the horses are fast.”

Newly-elected president of the Coonabarabran Jockey Club, Brad Edwards, is gearing up for the annual Coonabarabran Cup race meet on Sunday, 27 October.

Mob stand against Santos Coal Seam Gas has long been a divisive issue in politics, whether that’s at a Federal or local level, and last week, Santos made an appearance in Coonabarabran to discuss its plans for the Pilliga with members of the local Indigenous community. by ELEANOR RAPLEY Coal seam gas (CSG) refers to a natural gas, consisting primarily of methane, and is found in coal deposits, which is then sourced by drilling wells in the ground. The Narrabri Lateral Pipeline is set to connect the Narrabri Gas Project in the Pilliga Forest to the Hunter Gas Pipeline, with 50 to 60 kilometres of underground pipes beneath State Forest land. Five locations along the pipeline were selected for S ocial I mpac t A ssessment c onsu lt ations , w ith Santos planning to speak in one-on-one sessions with Indigenous people in Coonabarabran, Pilliga, Wee Waa, Narrabri, and Gunnedah. A Santos spokesperson s a id t he y we l c ome d the attendance of the Gomeroi people at the consultation sessions. “ We wa nt t o he a r

first-hand from Gomeroi people about thei r concerns and how we can ensure their cultural heritage is protected,” the spokesperson said. However, this process was not without c o mpl i c at i o n s , w i t h sig nif icant confusion arising, as the original flyer called on ‘interested s t a keholde r s ’ wh i c h Suellyn Tighe, a Gomeroi woman, attributed to mean all members of the community. It wasn’t u nti l a social media post by an independent individual a nd a phone c a l l t o a Coonabarabran T imes employee that t he d i s t i n c t i o n w a s made, w ith Sa nt os cl a r i f y i ng t he event was only for members of the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council. To this, Ms Tighe said, “that’s discriminatory in a way, because you c a n be G omer oi a nd not be a member of the Lands Council, you can

be Aboriginal and not a member of the Land Council – being a member of the L a nd C ou nci l does not determine your Aboriginality.” Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council CEO, Brandon Nixon, s a id C o on aba r abr a n L A LC was originally going to host the Santos event in its Gamilaraay Room. “A f t e r r e c e i v i n g feedback from the c ommu n ity it was decided that it was best not to host this meeting due to the impact the issue is having on our community,” Mr Nixon said. “ We wer e ne ver in formed that it was on ly L and Council m e m b e r s t h at w e r e allowed to attend, and

the adver tisi ng sa id ‘interested stakeholders’. “We were never asked to provide any details about our membership base here at the LALC.” A Santos spokesperson was unable to comment on how ma ny people reg ist ered t o at t end the sessions in Coonabarabran on Thursday, 5 September. These consultations have come after years of negotiations, with the Gomeroi people taking to news outlets, media, articles and reports to get the ‘social impacts’ of the Narrabri Gas Project acr oss (wh ich was precisely what Santos sought to understand in coming here), proving Ms Tighe’s point that they are not listening. Ms Tighe was one of

many local people who gathered at the front of the Coonabarabran Town Hall opposing Santos and CSG last Thursday, joined by local Elders, who also attended the demonstration for hours on end. When asked ‘why’ they were standing against Santos, Ms Tighe said simply that they don’t want the gas fields in the Pilliga, describing the Pilliga as an ‘umbilical cord’ connecting them with Country and land. “ We wa nt t o c a r e for Country out there, protect the water, native plants and animals,” she said. “We’re fighting to save the Pilliga because it’s a part of the Gomeroi Nation, it’s central to our stories and links with

cultural practices. “It was about making a stance, showing Santos that they are not welcome in the Pilliga. “ It’s showing that C oonaba rabra n’s Aboriginal community is leading the way in this. “ We wa nt e d t hem t o u nderst a nd that Gomeroi people in the l o c a l c o m mu n i t y o f Coonabarabran do not want them in the Pilliga destroying the Country and that we have a say in this,” Ms Tighe said. Beyond the boundaries of the Pilliga, an appeal was effectively made to the National Native Title Tribunal, putting any further progression on Santos’ end on hold. W hile progress th r ough th is syst em is slow, the G omeroi

Nation has been submitting evidence of climate change, with highly reputed scientists backing them on this front. “ S a nt o s i s c om i ng to town to discuss the s o c i a l i mp a c t s t h i s project will have on the people and community of Coonabarabran, since it was pre-empted by say i ng t o a lo ca l councillor that it won’t really a ffect us,” Ms Tighe said. “But we’re a part of the Great Artesian Basin and the Pilliga. They use lines on a map, but they don’t realise that when it comes to culture, those lines on a map are not valid, because of the cultural authority of the Gomeroi Nation.”

Sheryle Nixon: “I’m here today to save our water. If Santos do come through with gas, we’ll have no water. We’ll die. We had a major drought several years ago. This land is sacred to us and how dare Santos say to us that this a ‘courtesy’ to come here after we’ve already said ‘no’, and that it’s a ‘courtesy because it won’t affect us’. Of course it will affect us. We’re dhinawan sky people, where the emu starts, his foot starts at the Pilliga and stretches to Queensland.”

The Coonabarabran Times is running ‘Gamilaraay Word of the Week’, in celebration of our local Indigenous language. This week’s Gamilaraay word of the week is ‘gali’ meaning water.

Boccia stars bow out of pairs in Paris The Paris Paralympic Games has come to an end for Dunedoo’s boccia star, Jamieson Leeson, and Daniel Michel, after going down to defending Paralympic champions, Republic of Korea, 4-2 in the quarter-finals of the mixed pairs BC3.  It was not the fairy-tale ending the duo were chasing, after making history two days earlier by claiming silver medals in the individual BC3 competition, marking Australia’s best result in Paralympic boccia. Coming into the Paralympic Games ranked number one in the world in the mixed pairs, it was highly tipped that Australia would meet South Korea in the gold-medal play off.  But a f ter Austra l ia t opped thei r po ol , R epubl ic of K orea uncharacteristically dropped a game in the pool stages that saw them meet in the quarter-finals.  In what was a tense game, with Republic of Korea getting off to an early 2-0 lead after the first end, the Aussies staged a solid come back in the second and third ends. It all came down to the final end – even the final ball – and Republic of Korea was able to edge out Australia.  Triple Paralympian Michel was disappointed to bow out early, but incredibly proud of the medals they secured and the way they played in today’s quarter final.  “It was always going to be a super tough game today, the Republic of Korea are world number two and, in a way, our arch nemesis over the last

few years,” Michel said. “ Today we went out and fought really well, and to take it all the way down to the last ball, you wouldn’t want the quarter-final to end any other way. It’s just unfortunate, it didn’t fall our way today.  “ But we’ l l ta ke the two si lver medals – it has been an amazing couple of weeks for us over here.”  Leeson echoed Michel’s sentiments, saying the silver medals would not only be a game changer for them personally, but for the recognition of the sport within Australia.  “We’ve seen in Rio and Tokyo what Dan’s done to build the profile of the sport, and now, to be playing a role in the advancement of boccia as well – it’s incredible to be a part of that.  “Of course it would have been nice to finish off with another medal this time around in the pairs, but that is sport. “For now, we’ll take a bit of time off for the rest of the year, and then we’ve got our regional championships next year, which is the qualification for the world championships in 2026,” Leeson said.  Lauren Ryan, Paralympics Australia

IN FOCUS: GUNNEDAH FAMILY DAY CARE

Mooy is ‘udderly’ adorable If you’ve stepped into SPACE Gallery of late, you may have noticed an elephant in the room...or in this case, a cow, with Coonabarabran in the process to welcome ‘Mooy’, the Shire’s first ‘Picasso Cow’, courtesy of Gunnedah Family Day Care. by ELEANOR RAPLEY The ‘Picasso Cow’ is an incentive launched by Dai r y Australia, encou raging pr ima r y school students to learn about dair y products, farming practices and manufactu r i ng processes, with pa r ticipating school s receiving an almost lifesize fibreglass cow. Juanita Bunn, an educator with Gunnedah Family Day Care, applied for the cow on behalf of the nine educators based in Coonabarabran, and this will be the first Family Day Care and Early Childhood Service ‘Picasso Cow’ in NSW. Michelle Capewell, Coonabarabran coordinator for Gunnedah Family Day Care, has had the task of facilitating ‘Mooy’ and suppor ting educators during the process. “A l t h o u g h t h i s h a s been a bigger project than we originally envisaged – l ike how hard could it be to paint a cow – it has been a wonder ful learning opportunity, especially being situated in a rural a re a,” M r s Ca p ewe l l said. The cow was provided free from Dairy Australia, h oweve r, G u n n e d a h Family Day Care and Coonabarabran educators shared the

Mrs Capewell said the cow has been divided and painted into nine sections, reflecting the nine educator groups and the different coloured safet y vests they wear when out and about in the community. The sections are painted to reflect dif ferent themes in the dairy industry and have been decorated by the ch i l d ren, w ith the suppor t of thei r educato rs and M rs Capewell. At present, no permanent home fo r Mooy has been ar ranged, but Mrs Capewell is hopeful that it can spend some time at SPACE before venturing out into the community until a home can be found. “ We a re ex t re m e l y p ro u d o f M o oy, a n d th i nk she i s ‘udde r l y’ ado rab l e,” Mrs Capewell said. “The daycare children have gained a wealth of knowledge about the dairy industry – where and how thei r milk, yoghurt and other dairy products they consume come from and a re produced, along with health benefits, and a

new appreciation of art. “We hope that Mooy can inspire other schools and early learning services throughout the Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e

and beyond to get on board and put in a submission to add more ‘Picasso Cows’ to the Australian Picasso Cow map in our area.

“This has been a wonderful opportunity to showcase Gunnedah Family Day Care and Coonabarabran across Australia.”

An opening preview was held on Wednesday, 4 September at SPACE, where dairy snacks and milkshakes were served for the children and their

families. Learning journals and imagery relating to ‘Mooy’ will be submitted to D a i r y Au s t ra l i a i n coming weeks.

Family Day Care educators and children are delighted with their decoration of “Mooy” the cow.

Exploring preschool life with Jamie Family Day Care is a vital resource for parents and carers, allowing them to go to work with minimal worries. However, in regional and rural areas, long waitlists and limited facilities can make finding care a challenge. Lantern making lights up town Lantern making is an art form dating back to ancient times, but it was a first for Coonabarabran, with the ‘Lighten Up’ group from Lismore spending three days in town assisting students and community members create lanterns for the light Bloomin’ Birds Spring Fest on 21 September. by ELEANOR RAPLEY T he ‘ L ight en Up’ Group is the force behind the icon ic L ismore Lantern Festival that attracted 3000 paraders a nd a round 33 ,0 0 0 spectators in 2023. AROUND THE SCHOOLS Warrumbungle Children’s Services Yaama Maliyaa. Child ren’s ser v ices r e c ent ly ho s t e d t wo educational incursions delivered by Kids and T ra f f ic, a prog ram funded by Transport for NSW in partnership with Macquarie University. The sessions focused on crucial road safety topics – helmet safety and seatbelt safety. During the incursions, the children were engaged in interactive activities and demonstrations while learning the importance of wearing helmets while cycling, skateboarding, and scootering. They also discovered why seat belts are essential for their safety in cars. The engaging approach made road-safety concepts easy t o u ndersta nd and remember and the ch i ld ren later demonstrat ed thei r learning with role play outdoors. In addition to the children’s sessions, Kids and Traffic conducted an educator workshop. The workshop provided

early childhood educators w it h va lu a ble r o adsafety information and resources. The educators learned how to bring road-safety education to life by exploring ways to

make new and creative resources using recycled or upcycled items. The Kids and Traffic program plays a vital role in promoting road safety among young children.

Scholarships and Bursaries offer opportunities to develop talent and fulfill potential in students Each year, most boarding schools offer the capability for children to enjoy the benefits of a ‘home away from home’ education with the assistance of scholarships and bursaries. Sometimes the costs of a boarding school education can appear daunting, however, most schools offer scholarships or bursaries which not only lighten the financial load but open the door for your child to benefit from an opportunity which can be positively character forming, enabling and often life changing. Many North West region parents choose a boarding school education for their children for a variety of reasons – accessibility to schools within a reasonable distance of home, family

tradition - mothers and fathers who enjoyed learning and life at boarding school want their children to have the same opportunity – and the foremost reason, the depth of educational, sport, cultural and social opportunities boarding schools provide. Scholarships and other payment options are sometimes offered across a range of assistance packages from academic and boarding fees to sibling discounts. Making contact with the schools is a first step. Schools are keen to talk to parents who may want to explore these opportunities – now is the time for parents to get in touch with the boarding school of their

choice and discuss the options for their children. Motivated and enthusiastic students will find a welcoming environment at boarding school and have doors opened to enjoy the valuable learning and lifestyle experiences which will help them develop their interests and potential and build their future. Most schools will assess not only the academic, cultural, musical or sporting potential of the student but will be looking to award those who will make a valuable contribution to the school community. The schools in these pages invite parents to consider the options they offer for their children.

Open every door when opportunity knocks When you chat to the Yannakouros sisters from Nhulunbuy in Northern Territory about their time in boarding in Brisbane, the conversation is peppered with ‘it’s so much fun’. Daisy Yannakouros (Year 11) led the charge to attend a Brisbane boarding school, commencing at St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School in Year 7 in 2020. When her parents relocated to Nhulunbuy from Darwin, it was decided that her sisters would follow, Milly, now a senior, joining in 2022, with Ivy following in 2023, starting in Year 9. The sisters have participated in a list of sports as long as your arm, which not only includes school sports but club hockey and club AFL as well. A highlight this year was all three being selected for the Opens AFL team and playing together, which they say was ‘so much fun’, as was Ivy and Daisy playing on the same water polo team. Their sport involvement is key to enjoying their boarding days, as it keeps them busy and expands their friendship network in and out of the boarding house. They also love the weekend boarding house activities, particularly the closed weekends that occur once a semester and really help to cement friendships and community bonds within the house, especially as a newcomer. Daisy has been appointed co-Sports Captain in 2025, which she is very excited about, and Milly has enjoyed her time as a house captain this year, which she says has honed her

leadership skills, gathering together diversity of individual thought to work towards team goals. Being in their senior years, Daisy and Milly are at the pointy end of their academic studies. Both agree that prep arrangements in the boarding house help enormously. In the senior years, there are more options for boarders to study individually or collaboratively with their peers,

in addition to the bonus of having day school teachers attend prep sessions. Ivy says that while the dedicated twohour evening sessions for the Years 7 to 9 boarders at first seemed long, they have really helped her focus and having the day school teachers in attendance is incredibly helpful. Just chatting with the Yannakouros sisters is ‘so much fun’, hearing how they have embraced every

opportunity while at St Margaret’s with such gusto, while also deeply appreciative of the support they receive from the school community which helps facilitate all their activities – from parent support groups who make delicious breakfasts after rowing, to boarding staff who help organise transport, to the teachers for their academic care, together with all their other 190 ‘sisters’ in the boarding house.

Inclusive boarding environment, exceptional facilities at Marist A commitment to ensuring every boy feels cared for, safe and a sense of belonging underpins all aspects of the inclusive boarding environment at Marist College Ashgrove. The College offers exceptional facilities and resources for students from Years 5 to 12 and is Brisbane's only Catholic boys' day and boarding school in the Marist tradition. The College provides a sanctuary for learning and nurtures a faith-based approach to guide boys of promise to become men of character. A world-class, holistic education developing in boys their academic, social, spiritual, artistic and sporting growth. Excellence in academic endeavours, spiritual development through an active prayer and social justice program, and a strong pastoral care house system are important elements to this education. Our College vision statements encapsulates the overall aim of Marist education inspiring all boys to love, learn, lead and serve. We are fortunate to be able to offer a selection of scholarships and bursaries to boarding students including Champagnat Trust bursaries and ACER Academic Boarding Scholarships. The Champagnat Trust was established to provide assistance to students in necessitous circumstances selected on the basis of financial need.

The Trust takes its name from the founder of the Marist Brothers, St. Marcellin Champagnat. The Marist College family raises money for this intention each year. These bursaries offer full, half or part thereof, of tuition, boarding (where applicable) and compulsory fees for students entering Years 7 to 12. Families applying for fee relief in the form of a bursary are asked to complete a

confidential Champagnat Trust Application Form and provide supporting documentation. In addition to the Champagnat Trust bursaries, the College offers four Boarding Scholarships to Australian students entering Year 7, 8, 9 or 10 in 2025. These scholarships are generally intended for boarding students living in rural, regional or remote communities who would

otherwise not have the opportunity to access a Marist education. The Boarding Scholarship is awarded based on the applicant’s Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) examination results, previous school reports, other relevant information and an interview with the Head of College. The scholarship covers 25% tuition and 25% boarding fees tenable for four

(4) years from Year 7, three (3) years from Year 8, two (2) years from Year 9 and two (2) years from Year 10. The remaining 75% boarding and tuition, compulsory and miscellaneous fees are the responsibility of the Parent(s) or legal guardian(s). Caring, encouraging environment at PLC Armidale For the past 136 years, Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) Armidale has been educating girls from across the region and beyond. The college provides a caring, encouraging and empowering environment for each student to reach their potential and equips girls well to lead lives of significance. The 2023 HSC results demonstrate the college’s academic advantage - it had a higher percentage of its 2023 HSC cohort on the NESA Distinguished Achievers list than any other school in Armidale. A visit to the MySchool website shows PLC Armidale consistently scores above the national average in all areas of NAPLAN testing - the strongest results of any school in the region. PLC Armidale has numerous scholarships available to girls on merit from academic, music, creative arts, future leader, along with all-rounder and boarding. Many accomplished women have been the beneficiaries of the scholarships and bursaries offered to girls of promise and potential from regional NSW, who demonstrated a commitment to their education and future. Former President of the National Farmers Federation and current Director of the World Farmers’ Organisation, Fiona Simson, was a PLC Armidale scholarship recipient. So, too was CEO of Fletcher International Exports, Melissa Fletcher, Dr Nicole Sides, Director of Compass Fertility and former ACT Business Woman of the Year, and many more. “I was lucky enough to enter PLC Armidale on an academic scholarship in Year 7,” Mrs Simson said. “I had no idea just how much the skills I learned during my secondary schooling would influence my current career.”

The college’s capacity was intentionally designed to ensure an environment of close connection where girls are individually known and nurtured, so class sizes allow students to receive one-on-one instruction from teaching staff. Boars claim first Group 4 first grade premiership since 2002 Moree Boars acted out their billing as a “second half side” when they surged home in the final 40 minutes against Boggabri Kangaroos to win Saturday’s Whitehaven Coal Group 4 first grade grand final 40-18 at Boughton Oval, Moree. The Boars were down 14-12 at halftime and then 18-12 six minutes into the second half when Boggy centre Robert Doolan scored out wide. However, the Boars rallied on the back of a brilliant try from winger Jake Tighe in the 53rd minute. Captain-coach Michael Watton had provided a pinpoint chip across the Boggabri flank for Tighe to race through dive and catch the short kick in a brilliant swoop. Watton’s conversion made it 18-all and the Boars ignited. Six minutes later and the Boars were in again when Alex Barker stepped out of a tackle and back inside to dive over for the Boars to take the lead. Two more tries followed in swift succession, one for hard-working backrower Brent McDonald to gather a dropped bomb and plunge over and then Joe Wade to finish off a length of the field try started by Wade’s break and including centre Mark Pegus and five-eighth Jamie Sampson in an interchange of passes. Three tries in six minutes had buried the Roos before captain-coach Michael Watton put the icing on the cake when he angled back on an inside run to beat three or four defenders and score under the posts. He converted, one of his six goals from seven attempts, to complete a wonderful finish and day for the home club. The Boars had not won a G4 first grade title since 2002 when they beat West Lions 34-18 under captain-coach Tony Murray at Burt Jovanovich Oval. It was their fifth G4 premiership after wins in 1988-89 (captain-coach John Kirkwood), 1999 (Mark Ryan) and 2002 (Tony Murray). It also came after losing last year’s GF to North Tamworth 26-16 and ended a string of eight grand final wins for the Bears, starting in 2014, and including two years where COVID forced the game into recess. For Michael Watton it was a rich reward and relief. “I’m quite emotional,” he told G4 Media whilst holding back tears after the presentation ceremony. “Just can’t string the words together at the moment. I came here to do a job and

have done it. So proud of the boys.” When asked how much the win meant to him, his team and town, he merely replied: “Just look around you.” The swelling crowd of delighted supporters joined in with players from both sides to celebrate a magical day for the Boars. “There are people all around from all the clubs too,” he said. “It’s a massive boost not only for the club for the town.” Watton was also mindful of how potent his side’s attack is and was never worried about a 14-8 deficit at halftime. “We’re a second half side,” he said. “We could be 20 behind but we can score points.” They showed that in the major semi-final when they trailed Werris Creek 20-12 but roared home to win 60-24! “We know teams have got to score 40 points to beat us,” he added. “When we get going we are a hard team to stop. “They had a few tired players too and

were on the back foot. But it’s just a great reward for the boys over the last two years. “And a great win against Boggabri, who are a good, quality side.” He also praised club president Todd Mitchell for his huge involvement and leadership as well as a hard-working committee to promote the club and its players. The Boars had plenty of stars with prop Chris Vidler a standout in his final game and livewire five eighth Jamie Sampson awarded the Player of the Grand Final.

Brenton Cochrane was another standout, the 40-year-old backrower scoring one brilliant try to seal the game on the back of a brilliant Lachlan McGrady kick-return. “I finally won one,” he told G4 Media. “It’s been six or seven before today,” he said of losing GF’s. He also axed the retirement question. “I’m fit and healthy,” he said. “Not making any decisions just now. Got so many good young boys. They’ve all done so well.”
