SS Maitai Shipwreck: Visible from Avarua. Engine block protrudes just outside reef. SS Maitai traded between Cook Is. and Tahiti before it ran aground in 1916. Avana, the circle of seven stones: Harbour side at Avana, commemorates departure of a fleet of canoes to NZ (c.1350). Each stone represents a canoe that completed the journey.
