Rijder of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces, minted in 1763 in Dordrecht
Holland was the most important of the seven provinces of the northern Netherlands. Its economic center was Amsterdam, also called "Venice of the "North," since the town was built entirely on stilts. In the year 1622, Amsterdam already had 100,000 inhabitants. Thanks to international trade the city boomed, so that Amsterdam became the first trade metropolis of Europe in the 17th century. Both the Dutch East India and the Dutch West India Company had their seat there. The United Provinces issued since 1606 the gouden rijder; the gold coin had its name from the design of the rider on the obverse. Initially the value of the gouden rijders ranged from 10 to 11 guilders; in 1749 their price was increased to 14 guilders, a rate that remained effective until 1763.
