What are we missing in Italy for the proper performance of the compartment? “We are missing sound environmental education and proper information. There is still much ignorance about incinerators and biogas plants and we often hear misleading or not objective remarks that distort reality. Just in the latest years, due to various projects for schools, in which our company took part by holding a short basic course about recovery, they have been trying to stimulate the sense of environmental responsibility of young and very young people by teaching them how to reason critically on the simple actions that have a daily impact on our world eco-system”. What does innovation mean in your sector? “Innovation means to revolutionize the way of thinking, to give up regarding waste as a weight, but as a profit, not as a trouble for companies but as a resource in which we can invest. I’d like to point out that the real

problem is the lack of information on waste employment; for example, incinerators are integrant part of a modern integrated system for waste management. As a matter of fact, the countries with the highest rate of material recycling send the larger volume of waste to incinerators, thus avoiding that it is conveyed to landfills. If incinerators are properly designed and built, they not only don’t pollute, but they produce clean energy that can be used by citizens and companies”. What are your plans for the future? “We want companies to understand that waste is a resource and not a hindrance. Let’s think, for example, of paper and plastics: if they were separated properly, we could gradually eliminate deforestation and the use of oil. As a matter of fact, recycling doesn’t involve any environmental costs because everything aims at living in a better environment, both for us and the next generations”.
