you only get to live it once

Way back in ‘62 one guy had a dream: to show young travelers the world and change their lives in doing so. 55 years later and we’ve perfected the secret formula. One of the most important things we’ve learned along the way is to do things with passion or not at all. Most companies provide good service. At Contiki, that’s never been enough for us. Instead, we’re about going above and beyond, making every second of being young count, changing lives and altering perceptions of the

the TRIP MANAGeR Aaron Gallagher from Innisfail, Australia, has worked with Contiki for two years “I love working for Contiki because it gives me an incredible platform to not only meet new people from all walks of life, but to share with them my knowledge and passion for travel through the destinations I call home.”

the local guide Quang, from Hanoi City is a Local Guide, working with Contiki trips in Vietnam “I love showing people around my home country – in my job I get to interact with young travelers, as well as the history, nature and culture of Vietnam. I love to take Contiki travelers to destinations such as Halong Bay and see the happy expressions on their faces as they see it for the very first time.”

the trip manager Jasmine Coombs from the Central Coast NSW, Australia, is a Trip Manager on Contiki’s Asia trips “Working with Contiki means I get to meet and learn from people from all over the world, as well as get to see their faces light up every time I take them somewhere amazing that I know will be a lifelong, awesome memory. That’s been my experience and I’m just so humbled to have contributed to something amazing for someone else.”

HOW TO travel with

NO REGRETS

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Miyajima Island, Japan

Bucket-list experiences don’t come much bigger and better than this. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world and the kind of experience you can’t put into words, especially when witnessed at sunrise. Travel tingles and then some.

1

2

3

4

Scenic and serene, Miyajima Island is famed for the red floating Torii Gate that marks the entrance to Itsukushima Shrine, one of the holiest and most beautiful sights in all of Japan. But we’ll guess the tiny tame deer that call this island home will probably be your resounding memory.

Wat Xieng Thong Temple in Laos

ASIA 2017/18

Southeast Asia sure isn’t short of spectacular temples, but some are just a little more spectacular than others. Case in point, the Wat Xieng Thong Temple (or the Golden City Temple) in Luang Prabang. See it for yourself and you’ll soon understand the hype.

We call them No Regrets Experiences – the ones we reckon you just can’t afford to miss. And the best part? They’re included as standard on your trip.

Junk boat Special Stay, Vietnam

Drift past hidden lagoons and thick forests and explore the Sung Sot Caves (literally translated to Amazing Cave) as you cruise enchanting Halong Bay on a traditional junk boat. A fresh seafood dinner to a sunset backdrop is the added cherry on the cake.

One of the most sacred of Laotian rituals, rise before the sun for the daily Buddhist Alms Giving Ceremony. This is a truly unique experience, and sees you gifting rice, fruit and traditional sweet snacks to Buddhist monks to feed them for the day.

Day trip to Ubud, Bali

Oh Ubud, how you capture our hearts every damn time. Spend a day exploring the Elephant Cave, ogling the gorgeous (and downright spectacular) Tegalalang rice terrace, and generally half laughing/half avoiding the VERY cheeky inhabitants of the Monkey Forest.

N

obody does Asia quite like you, not even us. That’s why every single one of our trips has built in ME Time, to allow you to explore this colorful, flavorsome and culture-rich continent your way. ME Time consists of two parts – free time and ME Time optionals – allowing you to put your own unique spin on your adventure. Your free time may be dedicated to hunting down the best summer spring rolls in Hanoi, or taking a tranquil boat ride across Lake Pichola in Udaipur. Or maybe you’re just all about maximum chill time on a remote beach on Gili T. Whatever your wanderlusting heart is asking for, our Trip Managers are overflowing with local know-how to make it happen. Of course, travel is all about treating yourself to unique and wonderful experiences, and for those times we have our ME Time optionals. Like the sound of a tiger safari in India’s Ranthambhore National Park, a Thai cooking class in the Chiang Mai countryside or a full day snorkeling and boat cruise around Phi Phi? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. These experiences don’t just add to your adventure, they take it to a whole new level.

editor Ginny Copestake shares her tips on how to spend your free time in the pretty, cultural melting pot town of Hoi An.

Old Town beauty Hoi An’s multicultural blend of Japanese, Chinese, French and Vietnamese influence is what sets this town apart from the rest, and nowhere is this architectural mishmash more apparent than in the enchanting Old Town. Tottering Japanese merchant houses, Chinese temples and French colonial buildings all jostle for your attention, and strolling around with your camera in hand will literally occupy hours of your time.

Foodie adventures Just as the architecture of Hoi An is something of a multi-country melting pot, so has its food scene been similarly influenced. This is the home of cau lao (noodles), com ga (chicken rice) and possibly the best banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich) in all of the world, and venturing through the Cho Hoi An market on the banks of the Thu Bon river will put a contented smile on any aspiring foodie’s face. The wet market is especially worthy of a visit.

Bike ride escapes Bike rental places are everywhere in Hoi An and the cost is super cheap. Just a few miles outside of the Old Town, you’ll come across Cam Nam Island, easily accessible by bike. Grab a coffee, cycle through the lush rice paddies and out to the exquisite beaches, and see what rural Vietnamese life looks like in full swing.

Munch wraps up everything we do with food in Asia. To us, your experience with food is as important as the destination itself. It intertwines culture, tradition and local life, and forms a resounding memory from your trip. So, alongside breakfast included every day, we’re dedicated to delivering not only incredible included meals (think a traditional Kaiseki dinner in Hakone, or an Indonesian Nasi Goreng feast on Gili T), but also optional food experiences that really do get you tasting and learning about this glorious continent. A sushi-making course in Tokyo, cooking classes in Thailand, China and Vietnam and regional dinners are just the beginning. And when it comes to filling your free time with foodie wanderings, our Trip Managers’ little black book of foodie haunts never lets us (or you) down. These guys know their stuff, they will only ever recommend places they can personally vouch for, plus they’re well trained in food intolerances so you really can eat your way around Asia, stress free. Just know that when they say it’s spicy, they ain’t lying.

DO I NEED VISAS?

Please read carefully. Depending on your nationality, you may require visas to enter certain countries included in your trip. You are fully responsible for

obtaining all necessary visas prior to the departure of your trip. Contiki is not legally permitted to knowingly allow anybody who does not have a valid visa to join a trip. Visa & other entry & exit conditions (such as currency, arrival/departure taxes, customs & quarantine regulations) change regularly. In Asia, some visas but not all, can be purchased at the border. At www.contiki.com/ travel-resources we have put together some information for all of the countries that we visit on our Asia trips. Consult your travel agent or visit www.visacentral.com/ contiki to determine which visas you require & how to obtain them. Your passport must have at least six months’ validity remaining when you return home. Local immigration authorities may deny entry & deport people who do not meet this requirement, even if they intend on staying only for a short period. Important to consider: 1. Visas can take up to six weeks & a fee is normally charged. 2. Failure to obtain all necessary visas could cause you to miss part of your trip & will result in you incurring considerable expense & inconvenience. 3. It is better to apply for all visas through your travel agent before you leave home. Be aware that some visas can be purchased & arranged on arrival. 4. It is very important that the entry & exit dates are correct on the visa. Your travel agent will contact Contiki for full details.

HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN I BRING?

There are some things to consider when packing for a Contiki Asia trip: • Due to the large number of flights on Contiki Asia trips, your luggage needs to meet the weight & restrictions imposed by airlines. These limits are imposed by the airlines, not by Contiki. Contiki is not responsible for any costs incurred by overweight luggage. • You are responsible for carrying your own luggage. At times this will be in hotels without elevators (as is common to the region), or onto various forms of transportation, such as trains. On our trips, luggage is restricted to a maximum suitcase size of 73cm x 50cm x 25cm (29” x 20” x 10”) & maximum weight of 20 kg (44lbs) plus one small hand/ day bag. For the Japan City to Slopes trip, one set of skis or snowboard and boots is permitted. Charges may apply for additional equipment. Contiki reserves the right to refuse to accept larger & heavier suitcases on trip. Use of a backpack is suggested, but not required. Wheeled suitcases can be used on Contiki trips in Asia. On overnight rail journeys, overnight Junk Boat, overnight guest stays & other journeys, as directed by your Trip Manager, you will be required to store your main luggage & utilize your smaller bag.

NO MANDATORY TIPPING REWARD ONLY EXCELLENCE!

Every country in the world has different tipping policies & in Asia, within service industries, tipping is common practice. Tipping is totally optional & only given if you feel the service has exceeded your expectations. If you think your Contiki Team has done an exceptional job then you may wish to tip them. This is entirely discretionary – it’s completely up to you. No compulsory tipping – reward only excellence!

BOOKING SECURITY

Contiki has been running trips for young people since 1962 & is a member of the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA). USTOA includes all the major tour operators who are financially bonded for your security & who maintain the highest standards. Contiki is also a member of the National Tour Association (NTA) & the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA). With the guarantees of these organizations, you know your vacation & money are secure with Contiki.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Cancelation, unexpected medical expenses, injuries, theft, lost luggage or money can significantly disrupt & ruin your vacation. It is strongly recommended for all trips that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancelation, personal liability and loss of personal property. Please check that the insurance covers all of the activities that you are going to be participating in. Some policies exclude certain adventure activities. This should be arranged at the time of payment of the deposit and will, in certain circumstances, cover you against loss of deposit or cancelation fees from the date of confirmation of your booking, as shown in the insurance policy. Contiki cannot be held responsible for your failure to take out appropriate insurance and we recommend you purchase your insurance at or soon after booking your trip. You also agree to indemnify us against all third-party claims, actions, damages and remedies which may be brought against us in respect of your participation in the trip.

MANAGE YOUR BOOKING

Ready, set, go! You’re booked & it’s nearly go time, however just like when you’re taking a flight, it’s important you provide us with all your details before you can travel. Check out www.contiki.com/tripregistration to log into your booking.

In the absence of negligence on our part, or on the part of our agents and representatives, neither we nor they accept any responsibility for, and shall not be liable for, any injury, illness, damage, loss, accident, expense, delay or any other irregularity resulting from your participation in any of the activities made available to you. (viii) We take every reasonable precaution possible to assure your comfort, safety, and enjoyment while you are taking part in a Contiki vacation. Contiki vacations are for young 18-35 year old travelers who are in good health. A change of climate, food, time and varied cultural habits often affects travelers differently. We therefore recommend that you advise your doctor that you are taking one of our vacations and ask if he or she recommends anything for your trip, even for something as seemingly benign as an upset stomach. Since the brands of any medication to which you are accustomed may be unavailable in places to which you are traveling, we recommend you bring your own supply of any medication you will require and carry such medication in your hand luggage.

Prescription drugs should be carried in the original labeled bottles. Should you fall ill during your Contiki vacation, we will make every reasonable effort to make prompt, sanitary, safe and proper medical care available to you. However, if at anytime or anywhere treatments of any sort are suggested to you that do not meet your needs or expectations, you should not hesitate to contact your own doctor. Also, please note that the same sorts of activities that can expose you to certain types of diseases at home can just as easily expose you to those same diseases abroad. This information is provided only for your convenience and we are not responsible or liable for any damages resulting from your failure to confirm or ascertain health information or medical precaution, if any, for the places which you will be visiting. (ix) Contiki is responsible for taking care to arrange and conduct your vacation properly. With you in mind, we have accepted applications from and interviewed numerous potential employees, and then we select only those people whom we believe in our best judgement would be responsible and congenial, Trip Managers, Representatives and Drivers. Although we firmly believe, based on personal interviews and certain disclosures made to us by our employees, that all of our employees enjoy excellent health, we, like other trip operators, are legally unable to confirm this in most, if not all, instances.

If paying by a third-party credit card your Contiki specialist will provide you a third-party authorization form that must be completely filled out and received by Contiki before payment can be received. 1.2 Your land reservation will be confirmed on receipt of a deposit of US$200 per person for the first trip booked and then a deposit of US$200 for second and subsequent trips booked at the time of booking or the reservation will automatically be canceled. 1.3 To reserve your airfare, a non-refundable and non-transferable deposit of US$350 per person is required at time of booking. Once your airfare is confirmed and Contiki has received your air and land deposit, your air-inclusive price is guaranteed. Contiki reserves the right to issue your ticket based upon receipt of your land and air deposit. Any subsequent changes and/or revisions to your airline reservation after receipt of your deposit is subject to revision fees and/or airline-imposed change or cancelation fees. These fees are a minimum of $350, and in some instances may be up to 100% of the ticket price. 2. PAYING THE BALANCE 2.1 The balance of the vacation price must be paid by no later than 46 days before your scheduled vacation departure date which shall be by the due date stated on the confirmation issued to you by Contiki. 2.2 Air Payment: Payment in full for your airfare booked in conjunction with your Contiki vacation may be required at time of booking. The Department of Transportation now requires Contiki to inform you of the following conditions. The package price is subject to change until it has been paid in full. When this happens, it is usually the result of increases in fuel surcharges and or government taxes. You must consent to the possibility that, until you pay for your package in full, your price could go up. Once you have paid in full we would only pass along increases in government taxes if applicable at that time. Bookings made directly with Contiki have 7 days from when the first invoice is sent to cancel the booking and request a refund, provided that the booking is still 45 days before trip start date. Bookings made through a travel agent are subject to standard booking conditions and do not qualify for a refund. 2.3 If payment isn’t made by the due date, Contiki may assume that you have canceled and cancelation charges in accordance with clause 3 below will be levied by Contiki. 2.4 Tickets and other documents won’t be forwarded until full payment and required information are received by Contiki. 2.5 In the case of bookings made within 45 days of your start date, full payment is due at the time of booking. For bookings made within 21 days of the trip start date, documents can be emailed to the passenger at no additional charge or passenger can pay an expedited shipment fee (that varies by state) for physical documents. 2.6 Contiki reserves the right to cancel the booking and apply cancelation charges should payments not be received within the above specified periods. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet your payment deadlines. 2.7 Travel documents will be sent to you approximately 21 days prior to trip start date* (providing full payment has been received). However, if physical travel documents are required the next day or earlier than 21 days prior to trip start date* (providing full payment has been received), an expediated shipment fee (that varies by state) will apply. Any documents delivered outside the USA will incur a minimum fee of $50. The actual cost will be advised at time of booking. 3. IF YOU CANCEL 3.1 Freedom Guarantee/FlexDeposit: We know that travel plans can change. If you need to cancel for any reason, your deposit will remain secure until you’re ready to use it. Or if you can’t go, your deposit value is also transferable, so you can gift your deposit at no extra cost. The value of the original deposit can be applied towards booking a new trip. The original deposit refers to the trip deposit only and excludes any additional deposits such as Inca Trail, or flights. Any discounts already refunded are not applicable. The FlexDeposit will be applied as a discount on the final payment of your new trip. The amount allowed to be redeemed is equal to the original deposit amount paid. In the case of multiple deposits due to back-to-back trips, only one deposit amount can be credited per trip, they cannot be combined. However multiple trips can be booked using multiple FlexDeposits. Valid on all Contiki trips 7 days or longer. Offer is valid until the client turns 36. i.e fitting within Contiki’s age limit as per Contiki’s booking conditions. These must be booked well in advance in order to secure high quality services that adhere to our strict safety standards.*Where the percentage cancelation fee is less than the trip deposit, the cancelation fee will equal loss of deposit. If the reason for cancelation falls within the terms of any vacation insurance policy which you hold, then any such charges may, subject to the terms of your insurance policy, be refunded to you by the insurance company.

AIR ARRANGEMENTS These cancelation charges apply for airline arrangements made by Contiki: Prior to ticketing a service fee of $50 per person plus any airline imposed penalties.
