ON THE COVER Dispensing death from the spout of a warm teapot, Joanne Froggatt plays the notorious Victorian poisoner Mary Ann Cotton.

KMOS-TV Wood Building, Room 11 University of Central Missouri Warrensburg, MO 64093

Froggatt, who stole the hearts of millions of viewers as Anna, the loving and resilient lady’s maid on Downton Abbey, stars in a totally different role in a spine-tingling drama on Masterpiece, airing May 21. Inspired by the book Mary Ann Cotton: Britain’s First Female Serial Killer by noted criminologist David Wilson, Dark Angel dramatizes the events that drew a troubled woman ever deeper into a career of casual murder, while her loved ones and friends, who were also her victims, never suspected a thing. Born in North East England in 1832, a child of the coal fields, Cotton grew up in poverty with the dream of escaping the hard life of a miner’s family, a goal she came tantalizingly close to achieving. Her chosen means were her good looks, sexual allure, and the dirty secret of nineteenth-century suspicious deaths: arsenic, tasteless and easily disguised in a cup of tea. Her body count can never be certain; the current best estimate is at least thirteen, ranking her far above her Victorian male counterpart, Jack the Ripper. Female serial killers are so rare that criminologists continue to debate what makes them tick. Is it a thirst for power, a desire for material gain, or a sadistic delight in undermining gender stereotypes when they ask, “Why don’t I make you a nice cup of tea?”

Victorian Slum House Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

Troubled Waters NOVA

May 31 at 8 p.m

Water. Turn on the faucet and it’s always there. Without it we perish. But how safe is our tap water? Troubled Waters investigates how the water disaster in Flint, Michigan, has brought to light a disturbing truth about the vulnerabilities of water systems across the country. Narrated by Joe Morton, this eye-opening new one-hour documentary by the PBS science series NOVA investigates exactly what went wrong in Flint.

From the delicate intricacies of water chemistry to the biology of lead poisoning to the engineering challenge of replacing a ravaged water system, NOVA uses the lens of science to peer into the complex crisis ... and to explore what it means for our nation’s infrastructure. In April, 2014, the city of Flint, Michigan switched its municipal water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River. Unbeknownst to the city officials at the time, this switch would trigger a chemical chain reaction with devastating results: thousands of children exposed to lead poisoning, and very likely two outbreaks of Legionnaire’s Disease, claiming twelve lives.

He spoke of the four influential chefs importance of localism and sustainability long before who changed the way those terms had entered America cooks, eats the vernacular. At a time of and understands food. “all things French,” Beard appreciated what America had to bring to the table, and was the first chef to go on television to teach not only women, but men, how to cook. Julia Child - May 19 at 9 p.m. Child (1912-2004), fondly remembered for introducing French cuisine to American home cooks through her television series – beginning with WGBH’s The French Chef in 1963 – and books. The film tells two love stories: one between Julia and Paul Child, the other between Julia and French food. Originally broadcast in August 2004, the film features previously unseen photos, including several from Paul Child’s personal archive, granted exclusively to the film’s producers. Jacques Pépin - May 26 at 8 p.m. Pépin (b. December 18, 1935), a young immigrant with movie-star looks, a charming Gallic accent, and a mastery of cooking and teaching so breathtaking he became an early food icon - joining James Beard and Julia Child among the handful of Americans who transformed the way the country views the food world. Not content cooking in French palaces, where he was the personal chef to three French presidents including Charles de Gaulle, Pépin’s American journey took him through the kitchens of Howard Johnson’s, bringing his commitment to great taste, craftsmanship and technique to American popular food. With his landmark cookbooks and television shows, he ushered in a new era in American food culture – a story that continues to unfold. Alice Waters - May 26 at 9 p.m. Follow Waters (b. April 28, 1944) through a year of seasonal shopping and cooking, and discover both the recipes and vision of an artist and an advocate. She and her now-famous restaurant Chez Panisse became a major force behind the way Americans eat and think about food, launching the explosion of local farmers’ markets and redesigned supermarket produce departments. Distressed by the food she saw in public schools, Waters started an organic garden with an integrated curriculum at the Martin Luther King Middle School near her house, an idea inspired by The Garden Project at the San Francisco county jail. The idea of an Edible Schoolyard has now spread across the U.S. – and inspired similar programs worldwide. She is an activist with a flawless palette who has taken her gift for food and turned it into consciousness about the environment and nutrition, and a device for social change. 12

American Epic Tuesdays at 8 p.m.

This three-part documentary looks back to the trailblazing era when country-wide, the music of ordinary Americans was recorded for the very first time, and in June we will present The American Epic Sessions, a feature-length film showcasing contemporary artists in recording sessions using the historical recording machine (below). It is an extraordinary story set in the late 1920s, when record company talent scouts toured America with a recording machine and for the first time captured the raw expression of emerging cultures. It democratized music and gave a voice to the poorest in the nation.

May 16 - The series begins in 1920s Tennessee with performances by the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers and the Memphis Jug Band. May 23 - Then travel to the rural South as Elder Burch, Charley Patton and others record early Delta blues, gospel and protest songs. The Great Flood of 1927 devastates Mississippi River communities, leading to northern migration and Chicago Blues by Howlin’Wolf. May 30 - Discover how America’s diverse cultures contribute to its musical styles: from the Hopi tribe to Hawaii’s Joseph Kekuku to Mexican-American Lydia Mendoza and the Cajun Breaux Family. Mississippi John Hurt’s blues inspires a generation of musicians.. June 6 - Witness the rebirth of this recording machine when a collection of contemporary singers test themselves in recording new and old music. They include: Alabama Shakes, Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard, Nas, Ana Gabriel, Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Martin, Elton John, Seth Avett, Taj Mahal, and others!

Filmmakers Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty follow the recording machine’s trail across the United States to rediscover the families whose recordings would lead to the development of blues, country, gospel, Hawaiian, Cajun and folk music without which there would be no rock, pop, R&B or hip hop today. Over three episodes, the remarkable lives of these seminal musicians are revealed through previously unseen film footage, unpublished photographs and exclusive interviews with some of the last living witnesses to that era, when musical styles from across the country first emerged, sparking a cultural revolution whose reverberations are felt to this day Executive produced by T Bone Burnett, Robert Redford and Jack White, American Epic takes us on a journey across time to the birth of modern music, when the musical strands of a diverse nation first intermingled, sparking a cultural renaissance that forever transformed the future of music and the world.
