ON THE COVER 30 years ago the late Roy Orbison and some of his musician friends performed in a concert that just gets better with time.

KMOS-TV Wood Building, Room 11 University of Central Missouri Warrensburg, MO 64093

The concert, set in a 1940's-style lounge and filmed in black and white, included a stellar lineup of artists that includes Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, T Bone Burnett and Bruce Springsteen. Because the concert had been shot using seven separate cameras, hundreds of hours of footage went unused and unseen. For the first time since our last broadcast in 2009, you will be able to enjoy the songs in the order originally performed and hear Orbison hits such as “Only the Lonely,” “In Dreams” and “Crying” just as the star-studded live audience witnessed them on that very night.

Roy Orbison: Black and White Night 30 March 4 at 7 p.m.

It’s hard to believe 30 years have passed since Roy Orbison’s televised comeback Black & White Night concert was filmed. Recorded live in September 1987 at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, the concert featured the great Roy Orbison and an all-star line-up of special guests for a never-to-be-repeated evening of rock and roll, filmed entirely in black and white. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the legendary event, this newly edited and remastered version gives the iconic concert a fresh look and sound, bringing new life and excitement to the performances. When David Lynch’s landmark film Blue Velvet was released in 1986, it featured Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams” prominently on the soundtrack. Although Orbison had been out of the limelight for some time, the film helped spark new interest in Orbison’s music. On September 30, 1987, Orbison, then 51, staged a remarkable comeback concert with the help of guest musicians whom he had influenced: Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen (pictured below with Orbison), Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes. The all-star concert at the Ambassador Hotel’s Cocoanut Grove nightclub was turned into Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night the following January, less than a year before he died.

Because the concert had been shot using seven separate cameras, hundreds of hours of footage went unused and unseen. Roy’s youngest son Alex Orbison and his co-editor Luke Chalk have reedited the entire performance so that while the look will be familiar to those that have seen the original version, the vast majority of footage in this concert has never been seen by the public. The program has also been restored to reflect the correct set order, so that viewers can see Roy, brilliantly backed by Elvis Presley’s TCB Band (James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Jerry Scheff, Ron Tutt), blast through massive Orbison hits such as “Only the Lonely,” “In Dreams” and “Crying” just as the star-studded audience witnessed them that very night. Roy Orbison: Black & White Night 30 features classic Orbison songs such as “Only the Lonely,” “Dream Baby,” “Blue Bayou,” “The Comedians,” “Ooby Dooby,” “Leah,” “Running Scared,” “Uptown,” “In Dreams,” “Crying,” “Candy Man,” “Go, Go, Go (Down the Line),” “Mean Woman Blues,” “Dream You,” “Claudette,” “It’s Over” and “Oh, Pretty Woman.” It will air again March 7. Travis Tritt: A Man and His Guitar

Courtesy of Chuck Arlund, Arlund Photography

March 4 at 8:30 p.m. and March 9 at 7 p.m.

Filmed and recorded in an intimate setting at the historic Franklin Theatre in Franklin, Tennessee, this new concert special spotlights multi-award winning artist and country music hit-maker Travis Tritt’s distinctively soulful voice and his exceptional guitar prowess. The concert features Tritt at his best, performing a fresh take on some of his biggest hits, including “Help Me Hold On,” “Anymore,” and “Best of Intentions,” in a stripped down, pure form. Previously unreleased renditions of “Come And Go Blues” and “Pickin’ At It” are also included in the program. In this performance, Tritt acknowledges and pays tribute to artists he grew up admiring and those who were influential to him with personal stories and anecdotes from his long career. Enjoy a few songs and fun moments between Tritt and his guests Marty Stuart (above) and James Otto. More than 27 years after Travis Tritt launched his music career, the Southern rock influenced artist continues to sellout shows and stay true and relevant to country music fans across the globe. His 1990 debut album "Country Club" and its succession of hits put him in the vanguard of the genre’s early 90s boom, making him one of “The Class of ‘89,” along with country music superstars Garth Brooks, Clint Black and Alan Jackson, all of whom dominated the charts in the early 90s. 10

March 2017

On March 9 don't miss the treasure trove of honky-tonk hits and Texas swing tunes that turned the album Last of the Breed into a major-selling hit airs as a once-ina-lifetime concert event. Taped in 2007, at the Rosemont Theatre in Chicago during the final performance of their sold out tour that played to rave reviews, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price (backed by Asleep at the Wheel, led by Ray Benson, and Ray Price backed by his Cherokee Cowboys) deliver rousing performances of their greatest hits in the richest voices this side of the Rio Grande. Their timeless music - warm yet gritty, powerful and honest - will have you singing along from beginning to end.

Soaring Voices March 10 at 8 p.m.

Fernando Varela: Coming Home March 10 at 8 p.m.

Courtesy of Jeff Roach Photography

On Wednesday, November 30, 2016, world-class tenor Fernando Varela returned to his boyhood hometown, Orlando, Florida, to perform a magical evening at The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Showcasing favorite classical and popular tunes such as “Nessun Dorma,” “All By Myself,” “Three Times a Lady,” as well as a few dynamic new originals, the concert featured singing prodigy Jackie Evancho, pianist-composer-performer William Joseph, Grammy and Academy Awardnominated songwriter and producer Stephen Moccio and violinist Caroline Campbell. An American operatic and classical crossover tenor, Varela was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It wasn’t until he was 17 that he discovered his vocal talent and spent a decade pursuing his dream. Varela went on to win the “Born to Sing” competition produced by producer David Foster, and

later became a finalist in “America’s Got Talent.” He has performed in staged operas, and as a member of the classical crossover trio Forte Tenors. As a solo artist, he has toured internationally with Foster, and completed his own European tour in 2016, and will tour North America in early 2017.

Friar Alessandro: The Voice From Assisi March 10 at 9:30 p.m.

Alessandro Brustenghi is a modest friar living in a community of Franciscans around the hilltop monastery in Assisi, Italy.

Courtesy of Daniel Hart Media

He’s also the first friar in history to land a major record deal, a crossover tenor with three albums under his belt, or in this case, under his traditional friar’s white rope belt, which signifies his commitment to monastic life.

In this solo concert, the Decca recording artist and UK Classic BRIT Award nominee performs in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, the hilltop church that attracts some four million visitors a year to the burial place of St. Francis. One of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy, the basilica is decorated with beautiful medieval frescoes by Giotto. Friar Alessandro is a charming and spiritual young man with a big operatic tenor voice whose musical message of hope, peace and brotherly love is resonating with audiences across Europe and America. In The Voice from Assisi he is accompanied by the Orchestra da Camera di Perugia, the choir of the Basilica, and a children’s choir, the Coro Aurora. The repertoire of the program includes traditional sacred songs like “Panis Angelicus” and “Ave Maria,” as well as additional spiritual selections such as “Here I Am, Lord” and “Gaelic Blessing.”

of her unfavorable contract with Four Star Records. Six years after her national breakthrough on Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts (CBS, 1957), she died in a plane crash returning home from a benefit performance. Her many posthumous honors include being the first solo female performer to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a U.S. postage stamp. She was also portrayed in the Oscarwinning feature film Coal Miner’s Daughter (1980) by D’Angelo and in Sweet Dreams (1985) by Jessica Lange. Major support for American Masters provided by AARP. Born Virginia Patterson Hensley in Winchester, Virginia, Patsy Cline (September 8, 1932 – March 5, 1963) defined modern country music by using her singular talent and heart‐wrenching emotional depth to break down barriers of gender, class and genre. In her music and her life, she set a standard of authenticity towards which artists still strive. After years of hard work to overcome industry gender biases and her own personal hardships and professional missteps, she achieved success, only to have it punctured by uncanny premonitions and her untimely death at age 30. Narrated by Rosanne Cash, Patsy Cline: American Masters examines the roots of Cline’s impact in both personal and cultural terms to illuminate how she arrived at a pivotal moment in the evolution of American culture and, with Decca Records producer Owen Bradley, synthesized country, pop and rock in a new way to create the Nashville Sound. With exclusive access to the Cline estate, the film features rare performances of such Cline classics as “Walkin’ After Midnight” “Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray,” “Come On In,” and more. The documentary also features exclusive archival interviews with Cline’s contemporaries and new interviews with a wide range of artists who have been

influenced by Cline: LeAnn Rimes, Kacey Musgraves, Rhiannon Giddens, Wanda Jackson, Bill Anderson, Beverly D’Angelo, Callie Khouri, Reba McEntire, Mickey Guyton (pictured below) and others. Cline boldly bucked female conventions of the 1950s with her fashion sense, her decision to divorce, her support of fellow female artists, and her assertive ambition to get opportunities equal to those of her male Nashville peers, such as the same kind of headliner billing and radio airplay, particularly after breaking free

Ken Burns: America's Storyteller

March 14 at 9 p.m.

Join host Tom Hanks for a celebration of filmmaker Ken Burns, whose nearly four-decade career has resulted in some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made. Featuring interviews with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Doris Kearns Goodwin, George Lucas, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Meryl Streep, Sam Waterston and others, this heartfelt tribute explores the tremendous depth and breadth of Burns’s work and provides an exclusive look at The Vietnam War, a new 10-part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Burns and Lynn Novick that premieres in September. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Burns’s passion for telling America’s stories is evident in his choice of subjects, from American icons to American pastimes, from American landmarks to the country’s most momentous historical events. Since the Academy Award nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, productions by Burns have won 15 Emmy Awards and two Oscar nominations, and Burns himself has been the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Burns has been aptly described as “America’s storyteller.” Over the course of almost 40 years, he has carried on a deep and probing conversation with Americans about themselves and their country, its past and its future. Perhaps more than anyone else, he has elevated documentary filmmaking to an art form and made American history come alive. The tribute also includes an extended interview with Burns, offering a behindthe-scenes look at the making of his films and providing fascinating insights into his thought process, philosophy and creative methods. Filled with clips, photographs, outtakes and “making of ” footage, Ken Burns: America's Storyteller will remind viewers once again of the originality and craft behind the “Ken Burns effect.” Underwriters: Public Television Viewers and PBS

Korla

March 21 at 7 p.m. & 24 at 9 p.m.

Between 1949 and 1951 TV viewers were captivated by a musician from India named Korla Pandit. His music was new to many Americans, and performance included a wry smile and a hypnotic stare. He carried this mystique throughout his career, and only after his death in 1998 was it revealed that Korla was not actually a native of India. He was a talented and creative performer from Columbia, Missouri - John Roland Redd, son of a Baptist minister. Korla, a documentary about this cultural icon and groundbreaking television personality, chronicles the journey of master organ and pianist John Roland Redd, an African-American who successfully reinvented himself as a turbaned musician from India. On the live television program he hosted from 1949-1951, John fused compositions from the east and west, creating a new genre of music, now known as exotica. In 1939 Redd, an African-American born in St. Louis, Missouri, migrated to Hollywood with the dream of forging a career as a musician. Racial prejudice ran rampant during this era, but John, who was light skinned, was able to find work as a Latin performer in Los Angeles night clubs and lounges under the alias “Juan Rolando.” In 1944, John married Beryl DeBeeson, who at the time worked in the Disney effects department, and together, they would create the persona ‘Korla Pandit,’ a talented and mysterious

musician from New Delhi, India. With this transformation, a star was born and history was made as John became the first African American to host a television program, albeit without the audiences’ knowledge. Korla went on to become a recording artist, an actor as well as a lecturer on the “Universal Language of Music.” The documentary features insights and commentary from music, entertainment, and media tastemakers, including Carlos Santana, renowned Los Angeles Magazine reporter R.J. Smith, and radio personality Pete Fallico. Over the course of the film, viewers witness the engaging story of how one man mesmerized television, film and concert audiences with his tantalizing music, unforgettable persona, and neverbefore-seen keyboard theatrics – only to find that Korla’s true identity was a secret he took to his grave in 1998. Chris Quote “It has been thrilling to shed light on the fascinating life of Korla Pandit through this documentary,” said Eric Christensen, Coproducer for Korla. “Not only was Korla beloved by television audiences across the country, but he was deeply rooted in Hollywood society, regularly socializing with film legends like Bob Hope, Errol Flynn, and Sabu Dastagir.” Korla is directed by John Turner and coproduced by PBS SoCal and Korla LLC.
