ON THE COVER Enjoy an all-star tribute to Smokey Robinson, hosted by Samuel L. Jackson, with performances by the honoree and other artists, topped off with a special appearance by Berry Gordy, Founder of Motown. Artists include (subject to change) Aloe Blacc, Gallant, CeeLo Green, JoJo, Ledisi, Tegan Marie, Kip Moore, Corinne Bailey Rae, Esperanza Spalding, The Tenors, Joe Walsh, and BeBe Winans. We also honor the late Dr. Maya Angelou in a new documentary from American Masters. As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise will air February 21. Independent Lens features Accidental Courtesy, which follows African-American musician Daryl Davis with a peculiar passion. He makes it a point to meet and befriend members of the Ku Klux Klan in an attempt to change their minds and forge racial conciliation, one racist at a time. It airs February 13. Contact is published monthly for the benefit of KMOS-TV members and viewers. Every effort is made to ensure the schedule is accurate at press time, but some changes may be required to accommodate timely programs, producer changes or technical difficulties.

Member News and Updates Did you know that in 2016 KMOS, with your help, gave back to the community in a variety of ways? One such way was our program to give books to children in need in the central Missouri community on #GivingTuesday - November 29th. Through our partnership with ‘FirstBook’ and the ‘Central Missouri Community Action’ organization and because of YOUR donations, we were able to provide 600 books to children in need. That was amazing and we thank you!

Africa's Great Civilizations February 27 - March 1 at 8 p.m.

Courtesy of Nutopia LImited

Join Henry Louis Gates, Jr., as he travels the length and breadth of Africa to chronicle the continent’s history from a firmly African perspective. Gates chronicles a sweeping 200,000-year journey of discovery, showing the complexity, grandeur and diversity of many millennia of undiscussed and unknown details about Africa’s compelling and dramatic history. Africa’s contributions to the human community’s development of art and language, writing and religion, agriculture and government, the arts and sciences are commonly misunderstood, or even ignored. This landmark series presents a new and comprehensive narrative about Africa and the history of the extraordinary diverse peoples of its continent, from the Mediterranean Sea to the Cape of Good Hope, from the Red Sea and down the Nile River, and from the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic. The series sizzles with exciting interviews with leading historians, creative writers, art historians, paleoanthropologists, geneticists and museum curators, including the Nigerian Nobel Prize-winning author Wole Soyinka; Kenyan paleoanthropologist Dr. Richard Leakey; historians John Thornton and Linda Heywood of Boston University; Christopher Ehret of UCLA; Ghanaian scholar Emmanuel Akyeampong of Harvard University; and art historian Cécile Fromont of the University of 10

February 2017

Chicago, along with many others. Africa’s history and its rich culture did not develop in isolation - it is and was greatly influenced by complex interactions with the rest of the world, since the most ancient of times. Gates shows how Africa’s interactions with foreign civilizations and ideas transformed these trading partners, and how African societies and cultures themselves were shaped through these extended contacts, including the arrival of Islam in medieval North Africa and Western Sudan and the rise of a maritime civilization on the East African coast, which regularly traded with Persian and Chinese visitors. The series also examines the ancient African kingdoms’ increasingly complex relationships with the political economies of Europe and the burgeoning transAtlantic slave trade, and how these interactions began to change the internal dynamics of the continent. Finally, the series draws to a close at the end of the 19th century, when the infamous “Scramble for Africa” witnesses the industrial nations of Europe fighting for control of the vast riches of Africa’s natural resources, and Ethiopia's heroic stand against an invading colonial power. Corporate support for this series is provided by Bank of America, Johnson & Johnson and Ancestry.

City in the Sky

Wednesdays at 9 p.m. At any given moment, more than one million people are traveling by airplane, in 100,000 daily flights moving 30,000 feet above the Earth. This airborne metropolis and the armies of professionals needed to make it all work are captured in this new series. From hidden cities of luggage below ground to the steady hands guiding flights around the globe, this series goes behind the scenes with rare access to uncover the invisible global networks and complex logistics that have allowed air travel to soar to new heights. From the coldest airport in the world (in Yakutsk, Russia), to one of the busiest (in Atlanta, Georgia), to the most dangerous (in the Himalayan town of Paro), the series takes viewers to remote, little known places such as the world’s largest luggage storage facility and the storage tanks in Europe and southeast America that hold and transport millions of gallons of jet fuel through underground pipes. Through international in scope, City in the Sky highlights key American airports and aviation hot spots coast-to-coast, including: Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, America’s most advanced in passenger and airline traffic flow; Phoenix’s MedAire, Inc., at Banner University Medical Center, where a team is on-call 24/7 to help cabin crews with midair medical crises;

The Bangor, Maine International Airport, which boasts the size of a major international hub because it serves as the first U.S. point of arrival for troubled airliners crossing the Atlantic Ocean. City in the Sky provides a new appreciation for the paper stub or digital ticket that unlocks a precisely choreographed journey that starts the moment they walk into an airport terminal. Signage, lighting and flooring are designed to keep travelers on a flowing path to their gates. Vast underground machines give baggage the ride of its life from check-in to pick-up. Even non-consumer-facing parts of the industry bring fascination: the world’s largest cargo storage in China, for example, sees one-fifth of all global shipping come through its facility. Feb. 8 Departure Learn what it takes to get a million people off the ground - from building the world’s biggest passenger plane to controlling the flow of passengers through the busiest airport on the planet to the perils of takeoff in the coldest city on Earth. Feb. 15 Airborne Examine the hidden army that keeps your plane safe, and explore just what it takes to keep the “city in the sky” functioning and safe between take-off and landing. Learn why flying has become safer than ever. Feb 22 Arrival What goes up must come down - and getting passengers safely back to earth depends on complex global networks and some astonishing technology. Courtesy of BBC

Tower: Independent Lens

February 14 at 9 p.m.

On August 1, 1966, a sniper rode the elevator to the top floor of the University of Texas Tower and opened fire, holding the campus hostage for 96 minutes. When the gunshots were finally silenced, the toll included 16 dead, three dozen wounded and a shaken nation left trying to understand. Combining archival footage with rotoscopic animation in a dynamic, never-before-seen way, Tower reveals the action-packed, untold stories of the witnesses, heroes and survivors of America’s first mass school shooting, when the worst in one man brought out the best in so many others. Tower explores this untold history through the first-person stories of seven specific characters: two students who were shot, the two police officers who ended the siege, two civilians who provided aid to victims and police, and the radio reporter who broadcast live from the scene for more than an hour and a half and whose broadcast was picked up nationally, bringing the events in Austin to listeners around the nation. Seamlessly slipping from character to character, Tower unfolds as a momentby-moment re-telling of the events of the day, highlighting the fear, confusion and visceral realities of the shooting rampage. After the gunfire subsides, the story shifts to examine the immediate aftermath for these individuals and for society. Finally, TOWER steps out of the shadow of history to reveal the subjects as they are in the present day, exploring the legacy of the shooting through the eyes of the survivors. 18

February 2017

About the Survivors Claire Wilson, a pregnant 18-year-old freshman, was the first person shot from the tower. Her boyfriend Tom reached out to help her and was struck down as well. For more than an hour of the siege, Claire remained exposed to the shooter, conscious and steadily losing blood. Aleck Hernandez was a paperboy finishing up his summer route when he was shot off his bike. Houston McCoy (depicted below) was a patrolman with the Austin Police Department and the first officer to get the call to head to the campus. Ramiro Martinez was an off-duty officer who saw the report on the noontime news and rushed toward the campus to help. One of the last to arrive on the scene, he was the first police officer to reach the top of the tower. Allen Crum, university bookstore manager, left the safety of his store when he saw a paperboy get shot off his bicycle across the street. He immediately jumped into action to try to stop the bleeding, saving the boy’s life. Neal Spelce was a young news director who left the newsroom when he heard about the shooting, jumped into a station wagon equipped with an FM transmitter and sped to the university to report on the unfolding action. His radio broadcast was carried nationwide and listeners across Austin and the country hung on his every word throughout the 96-minute siege. John Fox, a 17-year-old incoming freshman who mistook the rampage for fun and games, was immediately overcome with fear and dread when he realized the enormity of the situation. After nearly 90 minutes of watching helplessly, John was overcome with a sense of duty.

Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise February 21 at 7 p.m.

Distinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” Dr. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928-May 28, 2014) led a prolific life. As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern AfricanAmerican thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before.

Journey through the prolific life of the author and activist who inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought. Features new interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Common, the Clintons and others.

With unprecedented access, filmmakers Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack trace Dr. Angelou’s incredible journey, shedding light on the untold aspects of her life through never-before-seen footage, rare archival photographs and videos and her own words. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South and her early performing career (1957’s Miss Calypso album and Calypso Heat Wave film, Jean Genet’s 1961 play The Blacks) to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana and her many writing successes, including her inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise reveals hidden facets of her life

during some of America’s most defining moments. The film also features exclusive interviews with Dr. Angelou, her friends and family, including Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Quincy Jones, Hillary Clinton, Louis Gossett, Jr., John Singleton, Diahann Carroll, Valerie Simpson, Random House editor Bob Loomis and Dr. Angelou’s son, Guy Johnson. “It is bittersweet that Dr. Angelou takes her rightful place in the American Masters series posthumously,” said executive producer Michael Kantor. “We are fortunate that Bob and Rita captured these insightful interviews with her just prior to her death so we can all learn from her wisdom firsthand.” Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise premiered to critical acclaim at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. It won the Audience Award at AFI Docs and was featured at notable film festivals worldwide, including Full Frame, Sheffield, IDFA and Seattle, winning 17 awards on three continents, and has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award. Funding for Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise is provided in part by IDP Foundation, Ford Foundation/Just Films, National Endowment for the Arts, National Black Programming Consortium, Anne Ulnick Gumowitz, Michael Metelits, and Loida and Leslie Lewis. kmos.org

American Experience

Explores Oklahoma City and Ruby Ridge Before the occupation of the refuge in Oregon, before the siege at Waco, before Oklahoma City, there was Ruby Ridge.

Ruby Ridge

February 14 at 8 p.m. Twenty-five years later, the same question remains: How could this have happened?

Oklahoma City

February 7 at 8 p.m. Explore the intertwined narratives of the worst domestic terrorist attack in the U.S. and the anti-government movement that inspired the actions of Timothy McVeigh, including two standoffs with law enforcement with tragic outcomes — Ruby Ridge and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. On April 19, 1995, McVeigh, a former soldier deeply influenced by the literature and ideas of the radical right, set off a truck bomb that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people and injuring 675 others. Drawing upon a rich news archive of the events, including more than 60 hours of audio from jailhouse interviews with McVeigh, “Oklahoma City” traces the events that led McVeigh to that day and recounts the stories of survivors, first responders, U.S. Marshals, FBI investigators and journalists who covered the attack. The film also provides an indepth and provocative exploration of the extremist anti-government movement that rose to prominence in the 1990s and still makes news today.

Shortly before dawn on August 21, 1992, six U.S. Marshals hiked up the steep ridge near the isolated mountaintop cabin of white separatist Randy Weaver in Northern Idaho. Charged with selling two illegal sawed-off shotguns to an undercover agent more than a year earlier, Weaver had failed to appear in court, instead holing up in his cabin with his wife Vicki, three children and a cache of firearms. Growing increasingly frustrated by Weaver’s defiance, the marshals had intensified their surveillance and strayed ever closer to the cabin itself. On the morning of the 21st,

a firefight broke out. Eleven days later, the standoff that mesmerized the nation would leave Weaver injured, his wife and son, and a federal agent, dead, and many convinced that the federal government was out of control. Drawing upon eyewitness accounts, including interviews with Weaver’s daughter and federal agents involved in the confrontation, “Ruby Ridge” is a riveting, minute-by-minute account of the event that helped give rise to the modern American militia movement. Directed by Barak Goodman and executive produced by Mark Samels. Oklahoma will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival followed by a limited theatrical release. kmos.org
