Member News and Updates Calling all fans of British costume dramas like Downton Abbey! Be sure to attend a FREE screening of Victoria on Masterpiece at the Missouri Theatre in Columbia, MO on December 2 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Already a huge hit in Great Britain, Victoria is a major new period drama starring Jenna Coleman as the young 18-year-old Queen Victoria, the longest reigning monarch in British history until she was overtaken by Queen Elizabeth II in September 2016. Starting in January 2017, the series will run during the Sunday night time slot that Downton Abbey once occupied. KMOS is dedicated to providing quality and educational programming to serve our community. The KMOS pledge drive started on November 26, and we ask you to please take a moment to consider the value that KMOS adds to your life and to that of your local community. At its core, public television is about public service and this year KMOS partnered with First Book and the Central Missouri Community Action organizations to help the children in need in our community! For every donation of $90 and above, KMOS sends three books to children in need in our community. KMOS is not beholden to any stakeholders except the members of our community who support and watch this station. Your tax-deductible year-end gift will go a long way toward helping us achieve our goals in the coming year. This begins with #GivingTuesday on November 29!

PBS loves Daniel Tiger! Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood LIVE came to the Missouri Theatre in Columbia on November 15th. It was an event filled with “grrr-ific” music, dancing and so much fun. He visited us back in October in Columbia as well and it was great to see him both times. Daniel Tiger and his friends have such a huge impact on our young children’s learning and are always excited to get to interact with him.

Is your child interested in mystery solving? We return to the Missouri Theatre in Columbia on January 27, Odd Squad is going live! The Emmy Award winning series follows the adventures involving a kid spy organization that investigates all things strange, weird and especially odd. Each episode has an embedded math lesson aimed at children 4-8 years old. Get tickets for your family to attend to a night filled with fun, laughter and learning. Remember, “Odd is the problem, math is the solution”!

December 2016

We thank everyone who joined KMOS in support of "Giving Tuesday," a day created to inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities. It’s an easy and meaningful way to give back to the nonprofits and the causes you support. Your generosity helps sustain KMOS as a vital educational, cultural, and entertainment source for thecentral Missouri region. At its core, public television is about public service and this year KMOS partnered with First Book and the Central Missouri Community Action organizations to help the children in need in our community! For every donation of $90 and above, KMOS-TV sent three books to children in need in our community.

Shakespeare: 400 Years Later From The Wars of the Roses to the Royal Shakespeare Company The Hollow Crown on Great Performances Follow the epic saga through lavish film adaptations of Shakespeare’s history plays. They span rebellion in France, the rise and fall of Joan of Arc, the terror of England’s Civil War and the infamous reign of Richard III. Sundays at 8 p.m., December 11-25

The first series of The Hollow Crown covered the so-called Henriad, comprising Richard II, Henry IV, Parts I and II and Henry V. Now, The Wars of the Roses picks up the story with epic film versions of Henry VI and Richard III. Award-winning director Dominic Cooke makes his TV directorial debut with the three films. Enjoy the performances of Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III, Tom Sturridge as Henry VI, Sophie Okonedo as Queen Margaret, Hugh Bonneville as Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, Judi Dench as Cecily, Duchess of York, Sally Hawkins as Eleanor, Duchess of Gloucester, and Keeley Hawes as Queen Elizabeth.

Henry VI Part 1

December 11 The King is dead and England is in crisis. War rages with the French and divisions within the English court threaten the crown. Young Henry VI causes outrage by marrying Margaret of Anjou, forcing an unwanted truce; the scene is set for Civil War. Henry VI Part 2 December 18 Bitter rivalries erupt. The feeble King Henry is overshadowed by Queen Margaret and her faction of Lancastrian Lords, his reign further undermined by disaffected nobles. Edward IV takes the throne, but Richard has his eyes firmly on the crown. Richard III December 25 Richard, the most notorious of Shakespeare’s kings, manipulates and betrays his way through the court on a bloodthirsty and ruthless path to the throne. But after Richard’s defeat at the battle of Bosworth Field, the Houses of Lancaster and York are united. Credit: Helen Maybanks © RSC

Shakespeare Live: From the Royal Shakespeare Company - December 23 at 8 p.m. To commemorate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death on April 23, 2016, The Royal Shakespeare Company hosted a glittering jubilee party in the Bard’s hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. Join in the celebration of his international legacy in all the performing arts - from opera to musical theatre. Many iconic characters, speeches and scenes from Shakespeare’s best-known plays will be featured, telling the story of Shakespeare’s life and career. Hosted by David Tennant and Catherine Tate, among the stars planning to participate are Benedict Cumberbatch, Judi Dench, Joseph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Ian McKellen, Helen Mirren, David Suchet and many more. Also featured will be performances by the English National Opera, the Birmingham Royal Ballet and the Orchestra of the Swan. Prince Charles attends in his official capacity as RSC President, and joins in the fun (above). kmos.org

Join KMOS-TV for as we say “so long” to 2016, and begin 2017 with some of the best of public television!

New Year’s Eve 6:00 p.m. Begin with the Lawrence

1:30 p.m.As is our tradition, KMOS

presents From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration 2017. Julie Andrews hosts the traditional ringing in of the New Year with the Vienna Philharmonic, under the baton of guest conductor Gustavo Dudamel, featuring Strauss Family waltzes and more, and a picturesque range of Vienna landmarks. 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The Great British Baking Show Masterclass begins! During the series, cookbook writer Mary Berry and artisan baker Paul Hollywood judge the pastries and cakes of amateur bakers. In this Masterclass, Berry and Hollywood take over the tent to demonstrate the skills that are expected of the amateurs. Your new year can’t get any sweeter than their creations of whole orange cake, tricky tuiles with chocolate mousse, twisted apricot couronne, and more. 6:00 p.m. Sherlock on Masterpiece: The Abominable Bride In anticipation of the world premiere of Sherlock’s Season 4 later tonight, we present one of the specials from 2016 in which our heroes, played by Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch find themselves in 1890s London. (Don’t miss Season 3 episodes airing December 28-30.) 8:00 p.m. Season 4 begins with the nation’s favorite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife Mary prepare for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. Robert Viglasky/Hartswood Films

Welk Show when Bob Ralston makes New Year's Eve a family affair with his wife, daughter and grandson. The Welk Band plays the "Champagne Waltz" while Lawrence dances with Norma Zimmer. 7:00 p.m. Live from Lincoln Center presents a night of American classics, including beloved works by Rodgers & Hammerstein, featuring Kansas City’s Joyce DiDonato with the New York Philharmonic. 8:30 p.m. We then switch gears with the 1978 Martin Scorsese film The Last Waltz, featuring Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Ronnie Wood, Neil Diamond, Eric Clapton and others performing with legendary rock group The Band. This film was hailed as one of the greatest rock 'n' roll films ever made. 11:30 p.m. Then we slide from one year to the next as Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King and Kris Kristofferson are inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame. Your host Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally introduce a roster of performers which includes Willie Nelson, Rodney Crowell, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons!
